“all around the world, people are attracted to the human voice. to its beauty, versatility—and to the strange things it can do,” explains roger thomas, musical director of the stunning vocal ensemble Naturally 7. thomas speaks from experience, hav-ing performed worldwide with the group since founding it with brother Warren more than 10 years ago. Naturally 7 regularly opens for international sensation Michael Bublé, while keeping their own demanding tour schedule.

the music of Naturally 7 defies expectations. their performance style grew from a cappella origins, but developed into what thomas terms “Vocal Play”—a thoroughly unique sound that meshes rich vocals with intensely realistic instrumentals—all created with the human voice alone. “the human voice is like a fingerprint,” thomas explains, “and little by little we found each guy has specific instru-ments that only he can do, the raspy voice of an electric guitar, plucking like a bass or creating the depth of a cello.”

in fact, audiences who hear Naturally 7 for the first time in concert often take a couple of songs to catch what’s going on, to understand that the instruments they hear are not on the stage but are being creat-ed vocally live on the microphone. Musicians mimic the motions of the instruments they imitate in order

to provide the audience with the visual imagery of a traditional band, and to get into the spirit of the in-struments they become. “Sometimes people need to see it broken down to really understand that it’s all vocal,” he shares, “We isolate one mic and people suddenly say ‘i can hear him breathing’ and they realize they can’t compare it to anything else, there’s no other experience like it.”

Naturally 7 brings a diverse set list with songs rang-ing from gospel to r&B to hip-hop to country to rock in what The Boston Globe hails as “a jaw-dropping vocal symposium.”With performances on The Today Show, Ellen, The Tonight Show, concerts around the world and a devoted internet following, Naturally 7 has emerged as an example of amazing showmanship to audiences around the world. Band members roger thomas (musical director, arrang-er, 1st baritone, rap), Warren thomas (percussion, guitar, clarinet, 3rd tenor) rod eldridge (1st tenor, scratching, trumpet), Napoleon (Polo) Cummings (4th tenor, guitar), dwight Stewart (2nd baritone, vocals, trumpet), Garfield Buckley (2nd tenor, har-monica) and “hops” hutton (bass) have developed a process through years of collaboration for craft-ing exciting arrangements, each musician putting his own spin on the sound of his “instruments.”

don’t miss your opportunity to see the electrify-ing, uplifting live performance of Naturally 7. the Music Center’s Concert hall offers the intimacy

and perfect acoustic setting to make this performance simply unbelievable!

aficionados of classical composition will find much to consider (and reconsider) about Stravinsky’s posi-tion in the musical pantheon as they delve into the series of events comprising the Stravinsky Project. during his lifetime, igor Stravinsky, having been ex-iled from his russian homeland, publically defined his music through an aesthetic of objectivity that fundamentally denied a cultural context.

however, as Soviet-trained musicians regained ac-cess to his work in the 1990s they reconnected the threads of russian musical tradition running through his compositions. By reinterpreting Stravinsky as an essentially russian composer whose exile sub-verted his musical roots, contemporary musicians and thinkers have provided a substantive rebuttal to Stravinsky’s self-created cosmopolitan modernist/neo-classicist image.

Stravinsky himself insisted that music is “essentially powerless to express anything at all” and admon-ished performers not to “interpret” his composi-tions. through the Stravinsky Project, the first fes-tival of its kind in our area, audiences and experts come together to challenge Stravinsky’s anti-inter-pretation stance and to consider his work through the cultural lens he attempted to suppress.

Whether you’re already a Stravinsky appreciator or are ready to listen and learn, there is a concert, lec-ture or visual arts experience waiting for you as part of this robust 3-day festival. Join us april 8-10 here at Strathmore, as well as at events at Georgetown university and the National Gallery of art.

Strathmore is pleased to present this groundbreak-ing festival in conjunction with the Post-Classical Ensemble, with sponsorship support from the National Endowment for the Arts, Asbury Methodist Village, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the DC Commission for the Arts and Humanities.
