ABOUT THE STRATHMORE CHILDREN’S CHORUS

The Strathmore Children’s Chorus (SCC) provides a pre-professional choral experience in Montgomery County for students ages 7–18. Under the direction of Founding Conductor and Artistic Director Christopher G. Guerra and Training Chorus Associate Director Mary Hochkeppel, four ensembles (Training Chorus, Treble Chorus, Concert Chorus, and Young Men’s Chorus) promote self-expression in singers, celebrate the diverse musical traditions of our community, and engage talented youth in joy-filled and uplifting music-making. SCC also performs with professional orchestras, other choral groups, and featured artists in ensemble performances, allowing Strathmore to provide a living, breathing, singing presence in our community.

ABOUT CHRISTOPHER G. GUERRAChristopher G. Guerra is the founding conductor and artistic director of the Strathmore Children’s Chorus. He is also the founding choral director of the A. Mario Loiderman Middle School for the Creative and Performing Arts in Silver Spring, where he directed all choral activities and taught courses in digital music for nine years. He currently teaches chorus at Ridgeview Middle School. Guerra is the recipient of the 2012 Maryland Music Educators Association (MMEA) Outstanding Teacher Award. His choirs have performed at two national conferences and for the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) 2012 National Middle School Choral Conference. His ensembles have received numerous county, state, and interstate

superior ratings and “best chorus” awards. He has directed and managed honors choruses for Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS), and his choral programs have consistently placed numerous students in honors chorus. He was the featured vocalist with the 566th Air Force Band and has conducted choral and production workshops in the US and abroad. Guerra attended the Chicago Musical College and earned his bachelor’s in music education from Ball State University, with graduate studies at the University of Maryland, Towson University, and George Mason University. He has studied with Doreen Rao and is an active member of the National Association for Music Educators, MMEA, and ACDA.

ABOUT MARY J. HOCHKEPPEL Mary J. Hochkeppel has been teaching music and directing choirs, dance teams, and Orff Percussion Ensembles at the elementary and secondary level for 34 years. She is currently in her 10th year with MCPS and teaches music at Sligo Creek Elementary School in Silver Spring. ABOUT THE SENECA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL CHOIR

The Seneca Valley High School (SVHS) Choir is a select group of students who have excelled in voice, music theory, and performance. The choir prides itself on consistently performing at the highest caliber. Under the direction of Michelle A. Searle, the choir has received superior ratings at county and state festivals and has won awards at national competitions. One of the choir’s most notable performances was singing for the President and Mrs. Obama in 2013.

MICHELLE A. SEARLE, CONDUCTORMichelle Ann Searle is the choir director at SVHS in Germantown. After teaching instrumental music for several years, Searle found her passion in teaching vocal

music. She has directed the SVHS Choir program since 2001, building it to include three auditioned choirs and two non-auditioned classes. Her choirs have consistently received superior ratings at county and state festivals and competitions. Searle earned her undergraduate degree in music education from Clarion University of Pennsylvania. She also holds a master’s in education and adolescent human development from the University of Maryland, College Park. She is a member of the National Association of Music Educators, and has served on numerous committees promoting music education. Searle was the recipient of the Maryland Music Educators Association Outstanding Music Teacher of the Year award in 2014.

PROGRAM NOTES

SING NOEL A two to five-part round for voices in any combination, a cappella or with keyboard accompaniment. This program foregoes the piano and begins with a celebratory holiday hand bell. Listen as each part enters and try to follow one to the end.

NATUFURAHI SIKU YA LEOTranslating to “Let Us Rejoice This Day,” this is a Kenyan sacred selection arranged for SATB (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) and percussion, and performed a cappella. With the sopranos starting, the remaining three voices respond, as the call-and-response is a common compositional technique for the entirety of the piece. “Hoyahe,” the starting and repeated text, is a word used to express extreme happiness. Arranger Mganga was director of the University of Nairobi Choir and is the founder and director of the internationally recognized Muungano National Choir.

DORM, DORMITranslating to “Sweetly Slumber,” this is a beautiful, quiet, flowing Italian carol. It is arranged in a rhythmic style of alternating meters of 6/8 and 2/4.

AGNUS DEIMusic at a cathedral mass promotes openness by using various styles and traditions. In an attempt to weave this philosophy into a global setting, arranger Rupert Lang set each movement of his Mass for Many Nations to reflect a separate aspect of the international community. “Agnus Dei” represents the European/Celtic tradition using a traditional Irish melody. To further represent the Irish culture, this piece will highlight a soloist accompanied by a Celtic harp playing simple chords with an added piano accompaniment on the tutti sections.

AL SHLOSHA D’VARIMA lyrical setting of the popular maxim from Pirkei Avot (Jewish morality laws). The translated text is “The world is sustained by three things: by truth, by justice, and by peace.” Though written in the form of a partner song, the text dictates one continuous statement. This compositional approach is supported by the lyrical phrasing of the two countermelodies.

BABA YETUA Swahili adaptation of “The Lord’s Prayer” by Chris Kiagiri, this is a unique title track from the video game Civilization IV and offers a world fusion sound which includes chanting and strong rhythmic choral sections.

PAT A PAN A French Christmas carol in Burgundian dialect. It was first published in Noël bourguignons in 1720. Its original title is “Guillô, Pran Ton Tamborin,” meaning “Willie, Bring Your Little Drum” or “Willie, Take Your Little Drum.” This Nativity carol is told from the perspective of shepherds playing flutes and drums. “Patapan” is meant to mimic the sound of the drum, and an accompanying lyric, “tu-re-lu-re-lu,” the flute. This is similar to the carol “Little Drummer Boy,” with its chorus of “pa-rum-pa-pum-pum.”

NOEL NOUVELETA traditional French Christmas carol. This was long ago translated into English as “Sing We Now of Christmas,” though the lyrics differ from their original French meaning.

A DOO WOP CHRISTMASWith lyrics that string together famous doo-wop song titles set to a 1950s rock and roll beat, this piece is an incredibly clever tribute to the American doo-wop era.

FROSTY WINTER SNOWA Russian folk song performed with energy and briskness celebrating the snowfall of winter. Arranger Audrey Snyder uses three text-set phrases in this edition as SCC combines the Russian and the English.

LULAJZE JEZUNIUOne of the most well-known Polish lullaby carols possibly written as early as the 15th century. The words express a deep love between mother and child. A small group of singers performs a descant in the latter half of the arrangement. Flute accompaniment adds to the tender character of the arrangement.

MELE KALIKIMAKA“Mele Kalikimaka,” the Hawaiian phrase for “Merry Christmas,” was written in 1949 by Robert Alex Anderson. One of the earliest and best known recordings was performed by Bing Crosby and the Andrews Sisters in 1950. This selection is dedicated to SCC’s choral photographer, videographer, digital archivist, and long-time SCC parents John Anderson and Roxanne Yamashita, who celebrate Hawaiian heritage and culture through their work with the Halau Ho’omau I ka Wai Ola O Hawai’i.

A LA NANITA NANAThis melody is a popular selection arranged for young men’s voices. This program places all voices on the tenor solo line, displaying the finesse and skill of SCC’s basses and baritones as they delicately negotiate the lines with light upper chest voice, if not falsetto.

WE THREE KINGS “We Three Kings” has been performed in a variety of settings and arrangements using Russell Robinson’s TTB (tenor I, tenor II, bass) arrangement. With notable tempo and key changes, it is a wonderful and incredibly mature piece for the Young Men’s Chorus.

HANUKKAH IS HERE With its hushed introduction, brisk common time tempo change, and movement back and forth from 6/8 to 4/4, this selection is sure to keep both audience and singer engaged and alert. The text announces the fun and enjoyment of Hanukkah with the playing of the dreidel and naming the four sides: nun, gimel, he, and shin.

Å, JUL MED DIN GLEDEA traditional Norwegian holiday song translating to “O, Christmas You Season of Childlike Delight.” Written for SA (soprano, alto) voices and violin, this song can be heard performed by a variety of ensembles or as a solo selection throughout the holiday season.

CHAUNTECLEERThis work is by acclaimed composer Dr. David L. Brunner of the University of Central Florida in Orlando. The text and poem is by William Austin (1587-1634) announcing urgency to the morning sunrise: “Wake, and joy, this Sunne to See.” Chauntecleer was published by Boosey and Hawkes in Choral Music Experience: Holiday Lights by Doreen Rao.

HALLELUJAH CHORUS The signature piece of the larger oratorio Messiah by George Frideric Handel. Written in 24 days, it was first performed in Dublin, Ireland on April 13, 1742, with Handel conducting. The libretto was prepared by Charles Jennens in three parts. The Hallelujah Chorus concludes the second section and the text is “Hallelujah, for the Lord God Omnipotent reigneth.” Handel begins with the motive introduction and proceeds into “Hallelujah” sung five times and then repeats the text one step higher. Unison singing and four-part is performed throughout, with new texts and sections often heralded by one voice section, followed by staggered entrances of the remaining sections. This movement celebrates the victory of God over all enemies, including death. For many in SCC, this is their first time learning and publicly performing this piece.
