College provides a full learning experience for our girls, building confidence and self-esteem whilst developing the whole self. As educators, we encourage a thirst for learning in every pupil and lay the foundation for each girl’s individual journey of growth.

Our youngest College girls have enjoyed a happy, productive and creative week as they took centre stage in their school production, “Siya ka Gogo”, a delightful story about friends finding a present for Gogo. This production inspired our girls to perform beyond our expectations and their individual achievement was most impressive. The girls brought much energy and excitement to the stage!

Music, Drama and Art have provided our girls with an opportunity to experience the sheer joy of song, movement, dance and imagination. The exquisite costumes, colourful backdrop and, of course, our beautiful girls - some of whom are only four years of age - added immense depth and pizzazz to this school production.

A strong sense of optimism and teamwork promoted confidence and well-being in our girls. They learnt to co-operate, take turns, explore their talents, and perform to their hearts content. The new experience of being on the stage, in front of an audience will remain with them throughout their school journey.

Our focus is developing the whole child and maintaining a balance between all subjects. What a privilege it is teaching these beautiful girls. Siya ka Gogo was a great success and learning through discovery was key. Our parents, grandparents and invited guests, were all part of this wonderful experience.

Each pupil's work was displayed at our annual art exhibition. The parents viewed their daughters’ art with great admiration whilst enjoying refreshments provided by College House. Mary Ann F. Kohl, author of Primary Art says,” As kids manipulate a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colours, they learn the basics of math. When children experiment with materials, they dabble in science. Most important perhaps, when kids feel good while they are creating, art helps boost self-confidence. And children who feel able to experiment and to make mistakes feel free to invent new ways of thinking”.

The U14 Water Polo team participated in the annual Roedean Tournament held on 18-21 October. What an exceptional weekend of fun, learning and good Water Polo it was. Congratulations to the team who gave of their best and performed admirably in the pool.

Alice Edward (Grade 12) has been selected for the South African Junior Surf Life Saving Team to compete at the upcoming World Championships, to be held in Adelaide, Australia from the 16 November. Children are one of the most wonderful blessings from the Lord. Whether one’s own, or those of extended family and friends, each one is unique, irreplaceable and precious. There is often a particular joy in the outlook and expression of small children, and here at DGC the joyfulness of our littlest girls is very evident. I am fortunate to teach them weekly and whilst they can be an exhausting whirlwind of giggles and energy, they frequently provide me with food for thought and are an example as they express simple yet profound observations of life and faith. As a popular children's hymn so sweetly puts it: “Though I may be young/You said 'Let the children come'/So I will sing/I'm not too small to know You Jesus as my Lord”.

Rene BowyerPA to Head of JP

After matriculating, I spent two years in England to give myself time to decide what to do with "adult life". After a couple of uninspiring jobs, including a production line on a dairy farm, my luck changed and I found a job at Lloyds TSB Bank, which lead to a new career direction in administration.

On my return to Durban, I enjoyed a variety of jobs, including being a co-owner of a PR and marketing company which did exceptionally well. I eventually found myself at Durban Girls’ College which must surely be one of the best schools in the world? How proud I am to be on the staff here. This has been one of the most exciting years of my working life and I look forward to many more happy days here at Durban Girls’ College. I am happily married to Shane who runs his own successful software business. We have two beautiful daughters, Samantha and Katy, who are look forward to joining their mom here at DGC next year.

We congratulate Sasha-Lee Corris-Nordengen (Class of 2015) and Bianca von Bargen (Class of 2011), who have been selected for the Senior South African Team to compete in the upcoming World Surf Life Saving Championships in Australia. Sasha is also the Senior Ladies Captain. We wish you both the best luck for the competition!
