Geography - Suburbs

*This activity will require some help from someone at home.

What is a Suburb?

Suburbs are places where people live.

They are parts of a city.

Suburbs have their own facilities like shopping centres, schools, parks, playgrounds, sporting fields and stations.

Most cities have many suburbs. Most suburbs are planned.

A large area of vacant land is used. Roads and streets are built. Electricity and water are connected.

Houses are built a short time later.

Think about these 3 questions and discuss with someone at home: Do you live in a city, town, or suburb? What facilities does your city, town or suburb have? Why do you like where you live?

Create your own suburb, using the steps in the sheets provided (this activity will need to be completed with someone at home).

If your toy is hidden in the fridge you could write the following clues.

Clue 1 – I am somewhere that keeps things cold.

Clue 2 – Food is kept here.

Clue 3 – I am found usually in the kitchen and have magnets on me. Where am I?

Test your clues out on a family member and see if they can find your toy!

Reading - Ulysses Butterfly

This is a reading activity all about the Ulysses Butterfly and its life cycle.

1. Look at the heading and pictures, think about all the things you already know about butterflies, and how that might help you to know what the text will be about.

2. As you are reading, think about how you would tell this information to someone else.

3. When someone at home has time to listen, discuss with them the whole life cycle of the Ulysses Butterfly from beginning to end. Think of other insects, amphibians, or animals that may have a similar life cycle.
