A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Page 3

Dear Friends,

Renew My Church has begun for St. Theresa!

As you may recall, “Renew My Church” is an Archdiocesan wide program, initiated by our Archbishop, Cardinal Blase Cupich who tells us: “Jesus Christ calls us to constantly renew His Church. Renew My Church is the Archdiocese of Chicago’s response to His call and our invitation for renewal. Called by Jesus Christ we are making disciples, building communities and inspiring witness.”

Every parish in the archdiocese has been joined in a grouping and all parishes will participate in Renew My Church in the next few years. Here at St. Theresa we have been united with the following parishes in our grouping:

St. Thomas of Villanova, Palatine – Fr. Tom Rzepiela, Pastor St. Colette, Rolling Meadow – Fr. Michal Lewon, Pastor Mision San Juan Diego Parish, Arlington Heights – Fr. Diego Berrio, Pastor

All four parishes in our grouping have a team of representatives to journey through this process together. Our team at St. Theresa is made up of the following individuals: Fr. Tom Bishop, Matt Boler, Cindy DeLuca, Peter Gardner, Fr. Matt Jamesson, Mary Keenley, Mike Thompson, Elizabeth Vogt and me. I am very grateful for our team’s willingness to participate in this process and am excited to have them on board. They will do a great job representing St. Theresa!

Between now and June, we will meet as a grouping six or seven times to accomplish the work of Renew My Church. The name we came up for our grouping is “Palmeadow Heights,” representing the primary communities we serve in our grouping – Palatine, Rolling Meadows and Arlington Heights. We are being led by a facilitator, John Carter, who will help us to keep on task and be as productive as possible with our meeting time. In addition, we will host two Town Hall meetings at St. Theresa to keep you abreast as to where we are in our conversation for Renew My Church. The other parishes in our grouping will host their own Town Hall meetings as well. Our first Town Hall meeting will be on Tuesday, February 20th at 7:00 pm in our Church and the second Town Hall meeting will be on Monday, April 9th also at 7:00 pm in our Church. I would encourage all of you to put these dates on your calendar now and plan on participating – I expect there will be much information to share as this process unfolds.

As I’ve stated before, I am very excited about Renew My Church! We have a great team of people, and I have really enjoyed getting to know the priests in our grouping over the last several months. We are a very diverse grouping with large populations of Spanish and Polish speaking people in addition to the other people who make up our parishes. We have three Catholic schools in our grouping and a wide diversity of ministries at our parishes. The possibilities of substantive work being done to share ministries together are great and that should be exciting for all of us! Please pray that the Holy Spirit, which has led us to this moment will continue to guide our journey and enable us to know God’s will for the people of our Palmeadow Heights grouping.

In other news, our new sound system in the church has been installed and it is fabulous! Someone described it as a much “richer” sound and I agree. Another parishioner who is hard of hearing complimented our system and stated that he can hear much better now what is being said in church. I’d like to thank Laura Kutscher who spent a lot of extra hours working on this plan with our sound provider Pentegra to get things working properly, but I would especially like to thank all of you! It is through your generosity that we were able to acquire the funds needed to make this plan a reality. This new sound system should serve us well for many more years to come!

Enjoy the week and may God bless you all.

CANDLEMAS MASS and Marian Statue Dedication

Friday, February 2 7:00 p.m. in the Church

What is Candlemas?

Candlemas Day is another name for the feast of the Presentation of the Lord. Forty days after His birth, Mary

and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple for the rites of purification and dedication as prescribed by the Torah.

According to the Book of Leviticus (12:1-4), when a woman bore a male child, she was considered “unclean” for seven

days. On the eighth day, the boy was circumcised. The mother continued to stay at home for 33 days for her blood to be purified. After the 40 days, the mother and the father

came to the temple for the rite of purification, which included the offering of a sacrifice — a lamb for a holocaust (burnt offering) and a pigeon or turtledove for a sin offering,

or for a poor couple who could not afford a lamb, two pigeons or two turtledoves. Note Joseph and Mary made

the offering of the poor (Lk 2:24).

The Presentation is a proclamation of Christ — Messiah and Priest, Lord and Savior. He is the light who came into

this world to dispel sin and darkness. For this reason, traditionally at least since the seventh century, candles have been blessed at Mass this day that will be used throughout

the year, hence coining the term “Candlemas.”

Thank you for caring so much about women and babies!

Results from the Daily Herald Roe v. Wade ad campaign St. Theresa parishioners were again among the most generous (raising over $1300!) in all the Vicariate parishes that joined in this campaign. We helped raise so much money again this year that FIVE different Pregnancy Centers and Homes for Women in Crisis Pregnancies received donations from the money remaining after the ads were paid for. Your efforts for the unborn are immeasurably appreciated.

You can see a copy of the ad on the bulletin board by the east doors in the Gathering Area. Gratefully, St. Theresa/St. Thomas Respect Life Team

On Sunday, Jan. 14, more than 6000 people united in Chicago's Federal Plaza to be a voice for the voiceless. Our bus from St.

Theresa was filled with joy and love!

True Prophets

In Deuteronomy today we hear that God's very words will fill the mouth of a true prophet, but a false prophet will, in a manner of speaking, put mere mortal words into God's mouth. In Mark's Gospel, we see Jesus teaching and healing as a true prophet, one filled with the authority of God's own voice. The whole history of our church is filled with both true and false prophets. Some false prophets were extremely popular and quite well-versed in scripture, and even held positions of authority. But in today's Gospel we learn that Jesus' fame spread because he taught with authority; he wasn't an authority because he was popular or famous. Elsewhere, we also learn from him, in his desert temptation confrontations with Satan, that anyone can quote scripture, even against God's purposes. Today we hear that his authority was not like that of the scribes, who held the official positions of religious authority in his day. Our work is to do our best to discern the true prophets in our midst, and to be true prophets as well. The psalmist tells us how to do this: by not hardening our hearts when God speaks. If we truly listen to God, it will be God's very words filling our mouths.

First Friday All Night Adoration

Valentine's Day is a day which many use to indicate their love for others, and this is both appropriate and fitting. As it turns out, this year Valentine's Day falls on Ash Wednesday and it is the beginning of Lent.

Those forty days allow us to show our love for Jesus Christ as we meditate on His other worldly sacrifice for us so that we could spend eternity in heaven with Him.

Please consider preparing for Lent by spending some time before our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament as we have our monthly First Friday all night adoration on Friday, February 2nd. You'll be glad you did!

Jesus is waiting for you!

Open Hours of Eucharistic Adoration:

Every Friday from 8:30 a.m.—5:00 p.m.

Extended 24 hours on every First Friday of the month 8:30 a.m.—7:45 a.m. the following day

Unplug and spend some time quietly with the Lord.

Our Stewardship

Please Make Your Gift to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal

“Come, Follow Me”

Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.

The ACA theme for 2018 is “Come, Follow Me.”

Each pledge makes a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me.”

After our parish goal of $90,041 is reached in cash, 100% of any additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs.

If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend.

Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Ministry of Care Report

We are most grateful for the opportunity to respond to those in need.

During the past year 2017, our special collections and donations from the Giving Tree amounted to a total of $17,735.

It is through the generous giving of those in our Parish and community that permit us to assist the less fortunate who, for reasons beyond their control, are threatened with eviction, foreclosure, loss of utilities, transportation or the inability to feed their families.

On their behalf we offer profound gratitude to all who came to their aid whether in action, financially or in prayer.

May God Bless you all.

Thank you, Deacon Stephen Norys
