A Message from Our Pastor, Fr. Tim Fairman

Page 3

Dear Friends, This weekend I am sharing a follow-up to a recent article I wrote about our two men in formation for the Permanent Diaconate, Andrew James and Andrew Kim. The information below comes from the Institute For Diaconal Studies and includes an invitation for all of you: On September 29, Andrew James and Andrew Kim will be called by the Most Rev. Mark A. Bartosic to the Rite of Admission to Candidacy for Holy Orders (Order of Deacon) at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, University of Saint Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, 1:30 p.m. They are two of 17 men to be formally enrolled as deacon candidates for the archdiocese’s Institute for Diaconal Studies. In the rite, Andrew and Andrew rise and publicly and freely answer two questions from the bishop: “In response to the Lord’s call are you resolved to complete your preparation so that in due time you will be ready to be ordained for the ministry of the Church?” and “Are you resolved to prepare yourself in mind and spirit to give faithful service to Christ the Lord and His body, the Church?” Candidacy is the first official recognition by the Church of the positive signs of their vocations to the diaconate, which must be confirmed in the next three years of formation—a period that includes spiritual formation and direction, theological reflection, pastoral ministry experiences, academic courses, human/personal development, field education, internships, and much more. To get to this point in their formation, Andrew James and Andrew Kim have journeyed through a one-year period of discernment called the Aspirancy Path that included prayer and spiritual formation sessions, a comprehensive course on the Catechism of the Catholic Church, days of reflection on the deacon’s share in the bishop’s ministries of Word, Liturgy and Charity, a field education experience in Service to Charity, monthly spiritual direction, and retreats during which they prayed and reflected, with their families, over their possible calls to the ordained ministry of deacon. Marlo James and Jennifer Kim, also participated in this year of Aspirancy. Their goals were to learn more about the diaconate, and to discern whether they can continue to support their husbands through the coming years of formation, and possibly as an ordained deacon. In fact, wives are required to write a letter to Cardinal Cupich that notes their free, informed consent to their husbands’ moving to the Candidate Path. Overall, the diaconate is thriving in the Archdiocese of Chicago. There are about 550 active deacons, with 64 men currently in the four-year English-speaking formation program. Deacons are found in many parishes of the archdiocese. Yet a frequently asked question is, “What is a deacon?” With bishops and priests, deacons receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders. They are full-time ordained ministers living in the midst of the world, most often with full-time careers outside the Church. Deacons may baptize, proclaim the Gospel and preach, assist at the Eucharist, witness marriages, officiate at wakes and funeral services, preside at Benediction, minister at other liturgical/prayer gatherings, offer blessings, and more. These are functions most visible in the parish. But a more important question is, “Who is the deacon?” The deacon is an emissary of the bishop, “the bishop’s ear, mouth, heart and soul,” as a Christian writer in the Patristic era described them. Once ordained, the deacon is assigned by the bishop to serve the people of God in whatever capacity is most needed by the Church, typically in the parish that helped him to discern his diaconal vocation. Therefore, diaconal ministry is a call to be configured to Christ the Servant—to stand in the midst of God’s people and be a sacramental sign for all to emulate. A deacon’s service includes a three-fold ministry: Service to the Word, Liturgy and Charity, and requires his active ministry in all three areas. This includes the aforementioned assisting at Mass and celebrating sacraments; evangelizing the Word by mouth and witness to the world; and caring for the poor, alienated, underrepresented, and neglected. Even in the workplace deacons are visible signs of Christ in the community. Please keep Andrew James and Andrew Kim, their wives, Marlo James and Jennifer Kim and all those in formation, and their families in your prayers that they might continue to answer God’s call in their lives. Also, please note that all are invited to attend the liturgy at the main chapel in Mundelein and celebrate with the new candidates, their wives, children, parents and families, during a reception at USML’s Conference Center following the Mass. Enjoy the week and may God bless you always.

Coming soon to St. Theresa Parish Stay tuned for details...

St. Theresa Parish has been donating meals to the Palatine P.A.D.S. Program at The Presbyterian Church of Palatine for over twelve years. Thank you to the twenty plus volunteers that have been cooking meals monthly for our PADS Shelter. Congratulations St. Theresa for caring for the needy so that this wonderful service will continue.

St. Theresa Parishioners cook the meal (from your home) for the PADS Shelter every third Wednesday of the month from October to April. The meals consist of PADS provided Menus that include entrees, sides, salads, breads, and ice cream. An email address is needed as we will be using an on-line Sign Up program for you to sign up each month for an item (or several items) to cook or to bring. (To bring means something you would just pick up at the store.) Food is brought to The Presbyterian Church of Palatine, located at 800 E. Palatine Rd (northeast corner of Palatine and Rohlwing Roads), between 10:00-4:00 the third Wednesday of the month (or Little Sisters of the Poor between 8:30 – 2:30). If you would like to cook and/or bring items this year, please contact Cindy DeLuca at [email protected] by October 1, 2019. If you participated last year, you will automatically be included in the Sign up on-line program unless you inform Cindy otherwise. The Presbyterian Church is also looking for teens to help every Wednesday to carry the food from their kitchenette drop off to the PADS area in their church. Please contact Cindy if there is an interest. Please note: In order for you to use our on-line sign-up, you will have to submit your email address to Cindy.

The Prayer Challenge Are you taking the challenge?

Say this prayer daily to St. Michael the Archangel, guardian of the Church. St. Michael is the spiritual warrior who defeated Satan in his dragon form, cas ng Satan and his cohorts out of heaven. He is o en considered to be a champion of jus ce and healer of the sick. It is said that St. Michael will achieve victory again, during the final ba le against Satan.

Pope Leo XIII started this prayer. Following a Mass in 1886, he had a terrifying vision of St. Michael, locked in ba le with Satan and his demons. Although he saw St. Michael being victorious and successfully driving Satan and his minions back into hell, Pope Leo remained troubled by the destruc on he saw in his vision, and sought to strengthen the faith of Catholics across the world, in order to help the faithful defend against the struggles that he could foresee.

This prayer is o en recited a er Mass. People o en say this prayer any me that their lives may be at risk of being taken due to an act of evil, when St. Michael’s prayer can offer protec on. St. Michael may also be asked to aid in your own personal security, or for a guiding hand that can lead you out of a dark place, and to resist evil influences.

Challenge #9: Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

Saint Michael the Archangel,

defend us in ba le. Be our protec on against the

wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him,

we humbly pray; and do thou,

O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God,

cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl about the world

seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

The “Visiting Monstrance” depicted here is a visible tool of evangelization used by the Pope John Paul II Eucharistic Adoration Association to enhance devotion to the Eucharist throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago. This beautiful monstrance was taken to Rome and blessed by Holy Father John Paul II on March 2, 2005, from his room at Gemelli Hospital. He consecrated the vessel specifically to promote Eucharistic Adoration, prayer for priests, and vocations. It was among the final items to receive a papal blessing by John Paul II, who was called by our Lord to his final rest one month later on April 2, 2005.

St. Theresa Parish will host the Visiting Monstrance on Friday, September 27th from 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. during Eucharistic Adoration.
