Dear Parents and Caregivers
Thank you for your support during an enjoyable Term 1.
Academic Progress
All teachers have written a Term 1 comment on your son’s academic progress. These comments are available on the Parent Portal of Kamar which is accessible from our College website www.stpats.school.nz.
Please access these comments and discuss them with your son. If you have any problems accessing the Parent Portal please call our College office.
Update on our Roofing Replacements
As you will have noticed there is steady progress on our roof replacement contract. The first half of the
Redwood Block is virtually complete and the “tenting” has been moved to the Northern half of the block.
We hope this section will be completed by the end of the holidays when the tenting will be moved to cover the Kennedy Block. During this period our 4 Level One Science labs will be closed off and classes relocated.
The final part of this contract is for the Watters Block roof. We are still expecting this contract to be finished by the end of Term 2. Regular testing for asbestos continues. To date we have still not had any air quality
fest that has raised concern.
Cultural
It is really pleasing to see practices for Con Anima – our choir, Kapa Haka and for our Poly Group going very
well. On Sunday we hosted a Music Futures concert in our hall. The highlight was Year 10 student Otis Prescott-Mason, a very talented young pianist playing the Trout Quintet by Franz Schubert with 4
professional musicians, three of whom play with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.
Sport
Special congratulations to our Senior and Junior Futsal teams who both won national titles during
Tournament Week. This is the third time we have been Senior National champions in the last four years. Congratulations also to our Handball team who also won the national title.
As we approach the winter sports season it is important to remind our students, our officials and our
supporters that we should always strive to abide by the principles of fair play. We respect our opposition and accept the decisions of all match officials. We do not get ugly. We are humble in victory and gracious
in defeat.
Big Boy’s Breakfast
Thank you to our Parents’ Association who hosted a wonderful “Big Boy’s Breakfast” on St Patrick’s Day. It
was a really special occasion with a full house and great speakers.
School Fees and Donations
We need families to pay their fees and donations. The Board of Trustees has only limited reserves and our Board of Proprietors have had to borrow heavily to cover the cost of seismic strengthening and roof
replacement. We need families, wherever possible, to pay their fees and the donations so we can continue
to offer a wide range of opportunities to our students. The best way is by automatic payment. Our office staff are always available to help you with this.

Absences from College
The Ministry of Education is very clear in its expectations around a pupil’s attendance at College. The only reason that a student should be absent is for sickness or bereavement purposes. Any other reason is
considered unjustified. There are a growing number of requests for students to be absent from College for
travel purposes, including family holidays. While there are often good opportunities available in this area, it is worth remembering that students are required to be at school and that their learning can be affected by
the classes and work they miss. We do not expect teachers to set work for students who are away on holiday. Parents are required to seek the permission of the Rector if you are considering taking your son out
of school during Term time.
Uniform
From the beginning of Term 2 we expect students to wear formal winter uniform. Students are required to
be able to do up their top buttons and wear their ties done up properly. They are expected to have clean shoes. College trousers are not permitted to be tapered or narrowed. Black socks should be worn. Please
work with us to ensure that our students wear their uniform with pride. They are our greatest advertisement and how they wear their uniform does matter.
Remembering those who have died
We remember in our prayers Vaitoa Mallon’s (Year 10) mother, Dr Teresia Teaiwa and the grandfathers of Jayden Kini (Year 12), Jordan Bickers (Year 10) and Alex Bickers (Year
13), the grandmothers of Jerico Koia (Year 9), Dean Ford (Year 9), and Abraham McDonald (Year 12), Mykal Pau’u (Year 11) uncle, Quincy Martin (Year 11) great uncle,
and the great grandmother of Liam Todd (Year 11) who died recently.
We also remember retired Judge Bruce Palmer who died recently in Christchurch, who
was an Old Boy and great supporter of St Patrick’s College.
Easter Message
Easter is the most important celebration for us as Christians because it reminds us of the passion, death and resurrection of God’s son Jesus. It represents the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and it gives
us hope for the future. Please take the time to go to a Good Friday liturgy at 3pm in a parish near you and to attend Mass on Easter Sunday. May the blessings of the Risen Christ be yours this Easter and may we all
grow closer to the God who loves us so much he gave his only Son for the forgiveness of our sins.
I hope that you have an enjoyable holiday with your son and that he returns well rested and ready for the
challenges that lie ahead in Term 2.

DEVELOPMENT OFFICE SPC Foundation's Annual Benefit Dinner & Auction 17 June 2017 - Celebrating & Supporting St
Patrick’s College Educational Fund
A warm invitation is extended to you to attend with fellow parents, Old Boys and friends of St Pat’s the SPC Foundation Benefit Dinner & Auction – SAVE THE DATE – Saturday 17 June, here in our College Hall.
Last year’s one was a great success raising $50,000 for Culture and Performing Arts and this year’s one
promises to be just as fantastic! We are pleased to announce that this year’s Guest Speaker at the dinner is Michael Jones. Ex-All Black who played in 55 tests and role model, particularly for Pacific Islander youth in
New Zealand, and in 1990 he received a New Zealand Medal for service to the Pacific Island community.
The theme for this year’s dinner is Educational Diversity. The escalating numbers of refugees globally constitutes a crisis which no nation nor Catholic school committed to human rights can ignore. The College
now has 21 Refugee/Migrant students enrolled in our College. Most of these students speak very little to no
English and come from Ethiopia, Samoa or Myanmar. St Patrick’s College wants to be able to support students who have an opportunity to come to school, but are experiencing hardships that potentially limit
their opportunities or who may have been disadvantaged due to their personal circumstances.
An increasing number of students come to St Patrick’s College with some form of learning difficulty. They
may be refugees or new migrants whose English is limited or they may have a specific learning difficulty. Students with dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism and those with auditory and visual processing delays make
up almost 20% of students in the New Zealand education system. We provide a number of teacher aides to
Fr Matt Crawford SM and Eucharistic Ministers distributing the ashes on Ash Wednesday
work with teachers in the classroom to ensure we can meet the needs of these boys but there are not
enough teacher aides to help our increasing numbers. We also want to provide professional development for
staff to upskill them in these areas. The Foundation will help fund the extra requirements needed to support these students within the College. Ticket price of $80 pp includes: complementary glass of bubbles, 3
course dinner with table wine and a night of great entertainment. Dress code: Business. Tables are for groups of 10, to book get in touch with Corinne Barnard Development Manager DDI: 04 939 5416 Mobile:

GRANDPARENTS’ MORNING FOR YEAR 9’s
This week we hosted 70 grandparents, parents and 45 grandson’s to a morning of celebration and sharing
daily life of a Year 9 Patrician at St Patrick’s College. The programme included a welcome from the Deputy Rector, Head Prefect, a Tour around the College, Choir singing the College anthem and 2 Year 9 boys
speaking about their first eight weeks at St Pat’s. Thank you to those that came along on Thursday morning and we hope you enjoyed the visit and will be back to visit us at other events during the year. Above: Year 9 Benjamin Mackenzie with his grandparents, Earl and Louise Hartstronge

MINISTRY TEAM
St Patrick’s Day Mass
The College celebrated the
feast day of our Patron Saint, St Patrick, on Friday 17th
March with the celebration of Mass.
Old Boy Priests Frs. Ron Bennett, Kevin Conroy SM,
Joe Savesi SM; past teachers Frs. Mark Walls SM, Des
Darby SM; and ex-rector Fr
Brian Wysocki SM; present staff member Fr Matt
Crawford concelebrated the Mass with Fr Pat, College
Priest as principal celebrant.
Above: Year 9 Baker Christie with his grandparents, Terry and Barbara Christie.
Mr Derek Woods’ junior actors showed the College how the legacy of St Patrick is still alive and well at St
Patrick’s. This theme was taken up in Fr Pat’s homily. St Patrick when he was the age of our students was
enslaved and taken to Ireland. He escaped only to return to preach the Good News to his former captors. He is for us a model of great determination and servant leadership.
The boys read and sang and prayed, honouring St Patrick and invoking his intercession over the College. We
were joined this year by our younger brothers and sisters, Year 7 and 8, from “little” St Patrick’s School,
Kilbirnie. The day was rounded off everyone enjoying the traditional green ice block.
Parents of Patricians
A large group of Year 9 parents and caregivers turned out on evening of Tuesday 14th March for the first Parents of Patricians evening. Mr Swindells, Ms Parkinson, Mr Atkinson and Fr Brophy presented short talks
on aspects of becoming part of the special community we enjoy at St Patrick’s. Through some focus
questions arising from each talk, the participants had the opportunity get to know each other and to chat about how their sons are doing in their first few months of becoming Patricians. This sharing is a valuable
part of integrating new parents into the College community as their sons become part of the College. There
will be 3 more evening sessions this year, one each term, as we continue this journey. We welcome our new
families to the St Patrick’s community and we encourage all our parents and caregivers to avail themselves
of this opportunity.
RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION FOR ADULTS AND YOUTH
Each year we celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation in the School Community for boys who are not baptised
or have not yet received First Communion or
Confirmation. Reception into the Catholic Church is by way of Baptism for those not already christened or
baptised, or by the Rite of Reception for those already christened in another Faith tradition.
In Term Two the Ministry Team will be offering an opportunity for students to prepare to be received into
the Roman Catholic Church. If there is sufficient interest an adult programme for parents, caregivers
and teenage siblings we will run a weekday evening
meeting.
The student programme to prepare for these sacraments will normally take place during the school
day at tutor time, assembly time or in interval or lunch breaks. There will be one meeting a week. It is
planned to have an overnight retreat for all candidates
during Term Three. We hope to celebrate the baptisms this year during the Assumption Day School Mass on
Tuesday 15th August and First Eucharist and Confirmation during the Family Mass on Sunday 17th of September. If you are interested in participating in this programme or you would like your son to be
involved, please email Fr Pat at [email protected]

TEACHING AND LEARNING
Report Information for Term One now available on the Parent Portal
A reminder that all subjects have entered report comments for all students at the College. These were made available on the Parent Portal earlier this week. The Parent Portal is accessed through the home page
on the College website. If you have any trouble accessing these comments please do not hesitate to contact
the College for assistance.
Additional Tutorial Support available through the College
Maths Centre If your son is struggling with his Maths he should be making use of the Maths Centre. This is open each
lunchtime upstairs in the Library (E101) from 1.15 pm. A different member of the Maths Department runs the session each day and it is an ideal opportunity for students to get extra support for their Maths, at
whatever level. Generally students should be making use of the Maths Centre before seeking assistance
from the Old Boys Tuition Programme.
Science Tutorials If your son is struggling, or wants extra help with his Science work, especially for his Year 11 NCEA Science,
the Science Department run tutorials each week over lunchtime, generally on a Monday. Your son is encouraged to make use of these tutorials.
Old Boys’ Tuition Programme From early Term 2 the College will again be offering tuition after school for students needing extra help with
their NCEA subjects. The tuition is run by recent Old Boys of the College and the College Foundation pays
the tutors so there is no cost to the parents. The tuition is either one to one, or tuition to 2-3 students at a
time all needing similar help. In the past we have found that the programme works best when the students
involved are recommended by their parents, or are self -referring. Sometimes students referred by their teachers are less willing to attend. For this reason if you feel you son could benefit from some tuition please
feel free to get in touch with Mr Martin. Note that in the first instance for Maths and Science the expectation is that your son is already using the lunchtime tutorials made available by these Departments, before he will
be considered for the Old Boys Tuition Programme.
VINNIES – the College’s Social Justice Group
This year our new leaders of the Senior Vinnies social justice
group are Year 13 Patrick
Garner - President, Dara Jagose-Dickens - Vice-President,
and Year 12 student Joseph Sison as Secretary. To prepare
our students as social justice
leaders within the school community, Caritas organised a
Justice Leadership Day aimed at senior secondary school
students from around
Wellington. They came together in March to discuss the issues
facing people in New Zealand and abroad. The College also
had its first mufti day for Caritas raising approximately $3,000.
A first for our Vinnies Leaders was the ‘Vinnies Ignite Retreat’ to celebrate the Vincentian spirit and reflected on the calling to leadership. This first-ever exchange for Vinnies-Youth of New Zealand was held at Kokako
Lodge, Hunua, Auckland. The focus was “Open my eyes Lord”. Patrick and Joseph represented St Patrick’s College who joined a collective from Wellington, including St Mary’s and St Catherine’s College.
Finally at the end of term the College
collected over 800 Easter Eggs for the
Vinnies Foodbank,
Soup Kitchen and Refugee Families in
the local community.
The College’s contribution was
invaluable to make Easter food parcels
a little sweeter. The St Vincent de Paul
foodbank said they
had more than enough to supply the community. Vinnies was also reaching out to the Wellington Women’s Boarding House
and Night Shelter.
Some of our students have been participating in a range of activities including visiting the retirement Home
‘Village in the Park’ on a Saturday morning and chatting to the elderly, collecting for Women’s Refuge and training for assisting at the Soup Kitchen.

CAREERS CORNER
Year 9 students have just completed their first term at College so congratulations. They have also attended House camps and completed their “Identity” unit for Religious Education. They have been
welcomed at the College via a powhiri on their first day, haka and chant practices, McEvedy Shield, clean-up crews, junior dance, St Patrick’s Day, ice blocks and “Becoming a Patrician” programme. They should know
their teachers, classes, be involved in cultural or sporting activities and teams. This belonging is a huge transition from the nervous first day, for both parents and sons.
Josh Halliwell graduated from St Patrick’s College in 2016 and was accepted into the NZ Navy. This photo was taken on the first occasion
that cadets were able to meet their family. Enlisting in the Navy has always been Josh’s dream.
Defence contacts: www.defencecareers.mil.nz
Many of our students have a dream but fail to follow it through and
“give up” after a few disappointments or if initial expectations are not met. Resilience is gained via “doing” with support, developing
confidence and communication skills, questioning failure, making
adjustments and giving opportunities a go.
Work Experience – April 3-7. Thirty-two Year 12 and 13 students attended work experience ranging from
IT to Trades. The benefits to student confidence and their aspirations is immeasurable. The reference and the networking assist further work prospects. To meet our students on work experience can be quite difficult
as they blend into the workspace, as an employee. So when you finally recognise them they are no longer
the student, but the worker. Many thanks to Elaine Waring our new staff member for all the hard work organising these work placements.
Career Central - http://www.cc.school.nz
Year 10 and Year 13 students will trial the new Career Central programme and these can be monitored by
tutor teachers so subjects are linked to potential careers or pathways are kept open. All students can access this programme which has links to Job information, CVs and can log their career goals, values and skills etc.
Students can sign in using their school email address and their password. This programme is great for investigating an industry and seeking the skills and subjects that are required to
enter courses or employment. It provides a platform for discussion regarding school work and behaviour.
MSDStudylink – www.studylink.govt.nz this is the funding arm for tertiary study. The only information we
will receive from them will be “Go online” to their website. The login process is arduous so make sure you have the time and the necessary passports, birth certificates for scanning. You will need an email address
and a cellphone for ID purposes.
Overseas Universities and agents – use the College careers website and the links below to assist with
US universities application process. After attending a USA universities presentation, they stated that agents were not helpful to the application process, were expensive and many prestigious universities stated they
will not work with agents.
US University Links: -
USEFUL WEBSITES FOR US STUDY.pdf – scholarships, funding, universities and applications. www.collegeboard.org – SATs and requirements for studying for the test.
www.fairtest.org – schools not requiring SAT tests.
BYOD – use responsibly as employers are searching Facebook. Make sure email addresses are clean and photos of yourself and others put you in a positive light. Failing to do so could lose future employment
positions. Also safely maintain your passwords as identity theft (even for a joke) can have wider implications
e.g. cyberbullying.
Career Events
Ninety-three students have attended the university presentations; some students have attended multiple
times so the turnout has been poor. There are 153 Year 13 students. Not all students are going to university, however those that are, need to be informed.
Calendar Dates
23 February - Canterbury University presentation period 6 (10 students attended)

Ted Talks – Jia Jang “100 days of Rejection” – awesome, short, funny, practical Ted Talk https://www.ted.com/talks/jia_jiang_what_i_learned_from_100_days_of_rejection
The word Deadlines relates to POWs held captive during the American Civil War when there were insufficient troops to guard them. The guards
drew a line around the prisoners and anyone crossing that physical line suffered the fatal consequences. Today we have deadlines every day for
trains, buses and work. These deadlines are set for organisation,
demonstrate responsibility and show courtesy, as late work means someone else is also late. So plan your time and get the work in on time.
Missing deadlines has consequences. At university, if work is stamped late, it will not be marked or in business late payment incurs financial penalties! Be organised, be courteous, and be on time.

ATHLETICS
The College was extremely proud of the Old Boys’ Cup win against Silverstream. The margin was clear-cut,
389 to 276, and came on the back of a total team effort. We also performed well in the McEvedy Shield, but the depth and talent Wellington College possesses meant we had to settle for second place, 238-143.
Ten students won McEvedy titles, 15 students posted personal bests on the day and Year 11 student Will Georgeson set a McEvedy record in the U15 high jump with a grand leap of 1.82m. Our McEvedy title
winners were Miharo Smith (U14 javelin), Khya Wilson (U15 100m and 200m), William Georgeson (U15 high jump, triple jump), Fereti Anae Brown (u16 long jump, triple jump), Johnson Aumua-Peseta (U16 discus),
Joshua Mallon (Open, 100m), Yasheek Rosario Open 200m, Max Karamanolis (Open, 3km) Ricki Manu
Laiatea (Open 110m hurdles), Joshua Nairne (Open, 800m).
This year our Athletics programme was boosted by the coaching expertise of Mike Ritchie (track and field)
and Shaka Sola (throws). Both are regarded as near the top of their field in terms of technical coaching
ability and they not only coached our students but upskilled our teachers. We would like to thank the SPC Foundation for funding the coaching support initiative.
Following McEvedy several students shone at the Wellington Regional Champs. Maihi Lucas won the junior
long jump (5.70m) and triple jump (11.38m), Miharo Smith took out the junior javelin (37.92), Liam Chesney
triumphed in the intermediate 3km in 9mins 22.74s, Misilifi Faimalo won the senior 110m hurdles (15.7s) and Samson Vandermade won the senior shot put (13.72m).
BASKETBALL
Basketball will get into full swing next term with fifteen teams registered to play. Five teams will play in the regional league and ten teams will play in the local league.
Tip Off Pre-season Basketball Tournament Rotorua
Junior Team
The junior team played Te Awamutu, Napier Boys’ High School and Gisborne Boys’ High in section play.
They beat Te Awamutu and Gisborne Boys’ and lost to a very strong Napier Boys’ team. The team then crossed over to play St Johns’ Hamilton in the semi-final. Again the team came up against a very strong
team and lost. Their last game was against Westlake Boys’ which we lost so the team finished fourth. This
was a very good result for a young team which has seven Year 9’s.
Senior Team
The senior team played Hamilton Boys’, Napier Boys’ and Te Awamutu in section play. They won all three games. Their next game was the semi-final against Hastings Boys’ which we won 62 – 46. The team went
on to play Hamilton Boys’ again in the final which we lost.
Thanks to all the parents and coaches that travelled up to Rotorua to support the teams.
Up Coming Tournaments
Over Easter our Junior A team and Senior A team will be playing St Pat’s Silverstream in the annual
tournament.
At the end of the holidays we will host the St Pat’s Classic which will see six colleges competing in the junior and senior competition. Competing colleges will be New Plymouth Boys’ High, Palmerston North Boys’ High,
Hastings Boys’ High, Rongotai and Wellington College.
Congratulations to Matt Brien, Jonny Joyce, Francis Mulvihill, Ben Robertson, and Ellery Te Ariki on their
selection for the Wellington Under 19 Basketball team.

CRICKET
ST PAT’S CRICKET QUIZ / AUCTION ON SATURDAY 20 MAY Arrive 7pm for a 7.30pm start in the St Pat’s College Hall:
We are asking our St Pat’s College community to support this fundraising event to send the 2017 1st XI and Development cricket teams to Australia in
September / October for a pre-season tour.
This popular quiz evening includes some Fabulous Auction items, a Cash bar
and some great quick fire raffles for what promises to be a night not to miss. Get together a table of 7-9 people for a fun night out.
Tickets are $25 per head (which includes a light supper & nibbles), tickets are available from the (24)
touring cricketers or you can contact Tracey Thomson on 021-919737 or by email [email protected] to
secure your table. Note limited tables available.
The first half of the season came to an end last Saturday. There have been
many individual and team highlights.
The most memorable was a fantastic 314 run partnership between First XI
captain Hamish Thomson and Aaron de Rose in the St Bede’s three-day
traditional match on Kilbirnie Park in
late February. Hamish went on to record the first double century for St
Pat’s in any traditional fixture. Some feat considering the cricket history at
the College. Aaron made 122.
Year 10 student Tristen Kulathilake
also scored a double century against the St Bede’s Colts one day later on
the same ground!
Our 1st XI have had mixed results in
Our 1st XI have had mixed results in the Premier Youth Grade with four wins and four losses. It has been a rebuilding year after losing so many Year 13’s from 2016 however the team has regained their top six PYG
status and are looking forward to finishing the season strongly in Term 4. Their game against a very strong Wellington College team in a T-20 game on the Basin Reserve in late March proved they are up to any
opposition on their day pushing Wellington College all the way to the wire in a narrow loss. Hamish Thomson
has clearly been the leading run scorer and quick opening bowler Josh Mallon, the leading wicket taker.
Aaron de Rose and Hamish Thomson following their outstanding partnership of 314 vs St Bede’s.
Above: St Patrick’s College and Wellington College 1st XI teams after their T20 match at the Basin Reserve.
The 2nd XI failed to win a game in their Saturday competition although they were competitive in every match
and were an integral part of retaining the McMenamin Cup. Their victory against the Silverstream 2nds along
with the Year 10 win against their Silverstream equivalents resulted in an SPC win by 2 games to 1. This is the fifth year in succession Town have won the cup. Jared Caldeiro is the leading run scorer for the team
and Matthew Scoble and Boston Christie the leading wicket takers.
A very young 3RD XI team under Coach Paul Madigan were undefeated in Term 1. This included a six wicket
win in the Premier 4 final against Wellington College. The win secures them promotion back into Premier 3 in Term 4. The top run scorer for the team was Jacob Madigan with 146 runs at an average of 73.0. The
leading wicket taker was Fillan Don Silva with 14 wickets at 6.64.
Mr Swindells Intermediate team and both Year 9 sides have also enjoyed plenty of success. Yashraj Kalsi is
the leading run scorer for the Year 9 A team with 190 runs at an average of 63.33 and Henry McIntyre the leading wicket taker with 11 wickets. Special mention to Harry Kidd who scored an excellent 101 not out
against Hutt Valley High School in late March. Harry Collier is the current MVP for the Year 9 B team and has
excelled with both bat and ball.
Special thanks to our dedicated coaches and managers for all of their efforts to help develop and nurture the cricket talents of our young men. Also to the many supportive parents that have followed our teams from
the side lines.

FLOORBALL
Our premier team finished fourth at Summer Tournament week but with an ounce of luck could have finished higher. We beat Scots in pool play but an injury to our national representative Reuben McSweeney
robbed us of some firepower. We eventually lost the 3rd and 4th playoff 3-1 to Wellington High School.
Above: the award winning 3rd
XI cricket team with their medals.
It was a similar story in the league season. We had the best record in pool play but lost in the first round of
the playoffs. Our Senior Div 1 team did very well to position themselves in the final, but fell by one goal. Our
juniors, who struggled for consistency with two defaults, played well when they were all there.
FUTSAL
A Dooley double was celebrated last week at the National Secondary School Futsal championships with
St Patrick’s College winning the Junior and Senior titles. Futsal is one the fastest growing sports and attracted 35 secondary schools to the three day competition in Wellington. The home ground advantage and
the fantastic support helped but the record shows St Patrick’s topped the for and against figures in both
grades. Liberato Cacace won Golden Boot with 20 goals for the seniors and both teams won the Golden Glove. Huge thanks to our Futsal coach Khalid Razouk and College families’ support.
HANDBALL
Our senior handball team went
through the national tournament at the ASB Centre
unbeaten, beating
Christchurch's Cashmere High School 22-14 in the final. This
qualifies them for the World High School Championships in
Qatar in January. Congratulations to the entire
squad but special mention for
Ricki Manu Laiatea, Francis Mulvihill, and Patrick Garner,
who were selected in the tournament team.
ROWING
The just completed rowing season has
been a rebuilding one for the College
and that was reflected in the
results at Maadi
Cup. The results were not
disappointing, quite the contrary. The
results accurately
reflected the opinion the coaches, Lua
Tuiomanufili and Ceri Amrit, had of
our crews.
Three of our crews now have national rankings in the top 15. The U17 Coxed Four (Jose Vaquero Lopez
Negrete, Liam McAree, Connor Wanden, Dominic Bell & cox Hayden Livesey) finished fourth in the B final, so are ranked 12th. The Novice Four (Patrick Topp, Arie Magasiva, Ronan Brennan, Sam Aldridge and cox Burn
Crang) also finished fourth in their B final, so are also ranked 12th. The U15 eight (Lucas Carroll, Xavier Bell, Patrick Topp, Arie Magasiva, Ronan Brennan, Jacob Franklin, Joel Lemalu, Ethan Wildash-Chan, and cox Burn Lachlan Crang) were sixth in their B final - making them 14th ranked and is a promising sign for the
future. A big thank you to all the parents, who drive rowing at the College.
SOFTBALL
The St Patrick’s
College Softball Team has had
another successful
season. Firstly, the team won the
Wellington Open Championship held
on 9 March at Fraser Park, Lower
Hutt and
successfully maintained their
status as Wellington
Champions from
2016. The team was unbeaten in
this competition and managed a
very close win against Rongotai College 1-0 in the final thanks to a game saving hit by Ellery Te Ariki in the final innings of the game.
The team carried this success into the National Softball Division 2 Tournament held from 28-31 March where they remained unbeaten for the first three days of the tournament. They beat Wanganui Boys’ High - 16-2,
Napier Boys’ High 8-1, Tologa Bay 14-1, Wellington College 10-0, Naenae College 5-4 and Gisborne Boys’ High 6-5 with strong performances in all areas of the game. On the final day of the tournament the team
conceded a loss to Tawa 5-6 before losing the final to rivals Rongotai College to end as the runners up in the
tournament. The senior players demonstrated consistent leadership in their performance, with Andre Hart
named most valuable player of the team during the tournament. Similarly it was rewarding to see the
development of the younger members of the team.
Many thanks to captains Ricki Manu Laiatea and Kody Clueard, Coach Phil Pene and assistant coach Regan
Taouma. Team Members: Andre Hart, Kody Clueard, Ricki Manu Laiatea, Ellery Te Ariki, Jacob Moffatt, Miharo Smith, Manaia Houia-Ashwell, Jackson Taurarii, Jazz Hart, Tamahoukura Gunson, Jordon Gray, Leo
Ryan, Jacob Natoli, Jayden Gardner.

VOLLEYBALL
Our Senior A team played some great volleyball, winning 6 of their 9 games at Nationals in Palmerston
North, the biggest indoor sporting event in New Zealand. Their week culminated in a 3-1 victory over Hillcrest High to finish 7th in the Premier division. Well done to the players for their spirit and skill. We are
especially grateful to our coaches Jordan August and Lauren Turrell, as well as Joanne Sio, for their support, and the incredible effort made by parents and players making 2017 our best year yet for fundraising.
Mr Doug Walker Teacher in Charge of Volleyball
WATERPOLO
The North Island Senior Secondary Schools’ Water Polo Championships were held in Auckland from 29 March
to 2 April. St Patrick’s sent a senior team to compete in this competition. Our pool was the “pool of death” given that two of the four teams are finalists in the Auckland competition: Sacred Heart A and St
Kentigern’s. Our boys faced these two first up, losing each by 18 goals. It was extremely hard for the boys
to get up for our easier pool game against Mt Maunganui and we lost 6 – 8. The team did not play well. We then faced Sacred Heart B in the next round, losing 9 – 14, a game we should have won also. Our next
game that day was against Palmerston North Boys’ High, a team the boys have beaten in the local competition. With confidence from those local wins, we came out the victors 8 – 6. The following day we
overcame Sacred Heart B by 7 - 4. By now the lads were exhausted and we narrowly lost in a very early
game against PNBHS, 1 -2. The team finished 14th, one place higher in the rankings than last year. A highlight was that many of the players improved over the course of the tournament. Thanks to our coach,
Rachel Duignan; our staff members, Fr Pat Brophy and Mr Daniel Silvester; our parents, committee members and all those who made it possible to participate in the tournament.
