“Ten lepers met him. They stood at a distance …” In the ancient
world and into the Middle Ages, there was no treatment for lep-
rosy. People thought it was wildly contagious and were suspi-
cious of any skin diseases. Lepers were isolated from civil soci-
ety. This isolation was uphold by the Mosaic Law. Should there
be a healing from leprosy, the former leper was to present him-
self to a priest to certify the healing. Like Jesus commands,
“Show yourselves to the priests.” The person would then un-
dergo a religious rite to be formally reintroduced to society. In
other words, a leper got their life back. So why didn’t they come
back?
“As they were going they were cleansed. And one of them, real-
izing he had been healed, returned, glorifying God in a loud
voice; and he fell at the feet of Jesus and thanked him.” Of the
ten lepers healed by Christ, only one returns with a grateful
heart. The others, perhaps, were thankful enough. Perhaps they
couldn’t believe their luck, and they hastened to the priests to
confirm the healing. They were more than willing to leave their
life of rejection and isolation behind. Why take any steps back-
ward, when the way ahead was so attractive? An attitude like
this is perhaps understandable, but few would admire it.
How about you? Do you come back? If you’ve ever had the
experience of getting what you hoped and prayed for, you know
that this can sometimes be easier said than done. When we’ve
wanted something badly enough, how easy it can be to focus on
the gift rather than the giver. The truth is, God is daily offering
us gifts: the gift of our existence, of the created world, of family
and friends, of modern conveniences. Even in times of distress,
there is always something to be thankful for. This Sunday, give
yourself a gratitude check. Count your blessings. Glorify God
and thank Him for the gift of your life!
A Pro-Life Rose Sale for the Mother of Life Center will
be held after all Masses, Next Weekend, October 19th
and 20th. All proceeds from the sale benefit the Catholic
pro-life center that offers counseling and other
free services to all women. Donation for roses
is $3.00. Thank you for your generous support.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2ND, 6 PM
The Annual Macaroni Dinner sponsored
by our Social Justice Committee is a major
fund raiser for the ministry. All funds from
this dinner are used to assist Smithfield residents who
are in need of food or utility assistance. Tickets on sale
after all masses. Adults: $8, Children 4-12: $4.
THE HOLIDAYS WILL BE HERE BEFORE YOU KNOW IT
At Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Parish Food Closet and the
Social Justice Committee provide food baskets for families in our
town. Each basket contains items that would allow these fami-
lies to have a special dinner on those days. A typical basket con-
tains stuffing mix, broth, boxed white or canned sweet pota-
toes, cranberry sauce, gravy, canned fruit, coffee, sugar and
cake mixes. (We already have plenty of canned vegetables). As
you shop each week, one or two items mentioned above, added
to your list and brought to mass on the weekend, would help this
ministry to fulfill their goal. Thank you.

SACRAMENTS FOR ADULTS
FAITH IS A LIFELONG JOURNEY
THE JOURNEY: For some it is a sense of wanting more, not know-
ing exactly what the “more” is… Many look to the Church as they
prepare for marriage. For others, it evolves as a family grows,
with babies being baptized and children receiving the sacraments.
The journey itself is one of intellectual, emotional and spiritual
conversion that is supported by our Adult Formation program.
Classes starting on Monday, November 25, 2019 @ 7:00PM
Any adult, 18 years of age or older, who would like to become
Catholic, receive First Communion, and/or Confirmation
should contact our Pastoral Assistant, Bill Bowden at 401-231
-5120 or [email protected]. You may also register for
