    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A Word from Fr. Drummond

    * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * A frequently asked question that I receive is, “When will we restart Perpetual Adoration?” And the response is that so long as we are required to maintain social distancing we cannot restart Adoration. The Chapel is quite simply too small. Before the Wuhan Virus turned the world upside down, we would frequently have the Chapel chock full of adorers — uncomfortably full in fact. I have had adjustments made to the air and ventilation system to accommodate those who wish to pray in a crowded chapel. Even before the Wuhan Virus and social distancing, the Chapel was a potential hot spot for the spread of contagious disease. With the current distancing requirements, we can not fit in more than 3 or 4 people at absolute maximum. And then the question arises how to monitor the number of Adorers and whether to limit the amount of time. There are certain times of the day when it seems “everybody”

    wants to pray in the chapel — and that is just not possible now. The Church itself is open for public every day until 8 p.m. Praying from the pews in front of the Tabernacle is in fact no different from praying in the Chapel before the Blessed Sacrament — it is the same Sacrament, the same Lord Jesus. And we do have exposition of the Sacrament in the Church every Wednesday. In addition to that is the Family Holy Hour with Benediction on Friday evenings. Although the Adoration Chapel itself may be may be closed, there are still plenty of opportunities for Adoration in the Church. Does this mean we should be satisfied with the status quo? No, but it does mean that for as long as the government perceives the Wuhan Virus to be a high danger, we will have to abide by government guidelines. (That is what happens when we elect governments that seek to manage and oversee every aspect of our lives.)

    St. Michael Parish and the American Red Cross -- will be hosting the Annual Fall Blood Drive on Sunday, October 18 from 9:00 am-2:30 pm in the school gymnasium. We will not be signing up donors after masses this year, instead the Red Cross asks that you signup online by going to redcrossblood.org and clicking on “Find a Blood Drive.” (Enter 22003 to search by zip code and then refine by date and choose 10/18/20.) If you have any trouble finding the drive, click the live chat icon on the lower right and the Red Cross will help you find out drive. You can also contact the drive coordinator, Joe Provenzano, at [email protected]. We need volunteers to staff the drive. If you have some time to spare on Sunday October 18 and are interested, please email Joe Provenzano at [email protected] It is an easy and enjoyable job!

    WEDNESDAY ADORATION -- adoration has resumed *only on Wednesdays*, from after the 8:30 a.m. Mass until 8 p.m. in the main church. For more information, please contact Rosemary Duffy, 703-256-4468. Friday Family Holy Hour -- Come to the church on Fridays from 7-8 p.m. Holy Hour will consist of two brief meditations followed by generous amounts of quiet time to rest in the Lord. This experience will help you relax after a challenging week and also to prepare for the Sunday liturgy! Parents are ENCOUR-AGED to bring their children but to also help us preserve the quiet as they are able -- please feel free to bring them and don't be embarrassed if they get squirmy! They need Jesus too! ALL are encouraged to bring a friend! Hope to see you this Friday! CONVERSION -- The Thursday Bible and Sunday Scripture Study Groups will be offering a short 7-Session course entitled " Conversion: Following the Call of Christ" published by Wordon-Fire and featuring Bishop Robert Barron as homilist. It presents a series of compelling conversion stories of great Biblical figures, using their examples to help us grow closer to Christ. The pastor has authorized in-person learning, so the Thursday Group will meet in room 4 on the lower level of the Junior School, as indi-cated, on Thursdays from 9:45 to 11:30 AM and has commenced. The Sunday Group meets in room 4 on the lower level from 10:00 to 11:45 AM and will commence its classes on 18 Octo-ber. Both programs are facilitated by fellow parishion-ers. Because of coronavirus and the need to follow CDC proto-cols, class size is limited to fifteen (15) including facilitators. Have you tried listening to God and looking to Him for answers? Come, explore these and other questions. Discover how the Bible and the History of the Church are relevant in your life today. We talk about peace and meaning, facing struggles and finding solutions. We use The Teen Timeline study program by Ascension Press and we alternate each week, exploring the Bible and the History of the Church.
