* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * With the Grace of God things may soon get back to normal, although “normal” will not be what it was before the coronavirus. We will probably see more widespread use of masks, people will probably continue to maintain a certain distance from one another and there will be fewer people shaking hands than before. But what a relief it will be when we can finally have public Mass again! It would be well for us all in light of all this social upheaval to stop and take stock of what is really important in our lives. This enforced staying at home should make us aware of how serious we take our Faith. Are we relieved to finally “have Sundays to

***All public Masses (including Sunday, Holy Day, and weekday Masses) are suspended immediately until further notice.*** Confessions are by appointment only. Please call the office (703.256.7822) during office hours. The main church will be open for adoration from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. (but subject to change without notice day by day). More updates to follow ASAP. Thank you for your patience – and remem-ber, God is not bound by His Sacraments – He is the first to understand and support His Church with His infinite Grace. CCD, SCHOOL, RCIA, and all other opera-tions are canceled.

ourselves,” or do we feel as if something is missing on Sunday? Have we followed Mass on television and felt, “Well, this is a lot easier…” Or have we followed Mass on television and felt a sharp sense of longing for the Eucharist which we can see on the screen but cannot physically receive? Do we feel the need for the Sacrament of Rec-onciliation, Confession? The Sacraments are not only the mark of our Faith but also of our identity. If we have felt the lack of the Sacraments in the past few weeks and have experienced an interior longing or restlessness then, in terms of our Faith, we are relatively healthy. And for that we should be grateful. These past few weeks have been par-ticularly painful for me as a priest as I cele-brate Mass and think of all our daily com-municants — those people of our parish for whom Mass is the center of their day every day, not just on Sunday. We are very blessed here at St. Michael’s to have a great number of daily communicants. It is a habit of mine when distributing Holy Commun-ion at daily Mass to keep count. At our 8:30 a.m. Mass we normally get between 60 and 70 people coming up for Communion. At our noon Mass the number usually exceeds 100 and sometimes reaches to over 120! It is my hope and my prayer that when we are able to resume public Mass, these numbers may increase. In the meanwhile, beginning the first Monday in May I will resume hearing Con-fessions from 7:30-8 a.m. Monday thru Fri-day, so long as my health permits.

Catholic Diocese of Arlington Prevention and Response

to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) The Catholic Diocese of Arlington has been in consultation with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and is actively coordinating with county public health departments to ensure that all diocesan parishes, schools, ministries, and charities are responding appropriately to the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

With active cases of coronavirus present in Mary-land, Washington D.C. and Virginia, the Diocese is taking additional precautions to protect the health and safety of those who serve in or are served by the diocese, as well as the broader public, all in an abundance of caution. On March 16, Bishop Burbidge announced via a video message that until further notice, all public celebrations of the Mass are canceled throughout the Diocese.

Bishop Burbidge has asked pastors to keep churches open to the public, so that those who choose to pray, are welcome to do so in the pres-ence of our Eucharistic Lord, while keeping a safe distance from one another and not exceeding the 10-person limit.

With public celebrations of the Sunday Mass can-celed, the faithful are encouraged to devote time to prayer, observe Mass on television or the internet, and pray the Rosary along with other devotions.

The Diocese co-sponsors a televised Sunday Mass with the Archdiocese of Washington. It takes place at the Basilica Shrine of the Immaculate Concep-tion in Washington and is available at 10:30am on Sundays on two local TV stations as well as online. Go to ArlingtonDiocese.org/TVMass for more in-formation or to view the Mass.
