* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * As you read this I will be in Lourdes. Every year the Order of Malta holds its International Pilgrimage to Lourdes, centering on the first Sunday in May. As a Magistral Chaplain of the Order I try to participate and have done so for the last ten years. The Order of Malta or the Hospitaler Order of St. John of Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta is a sovereign entity, chartered by the Pope in the year 1113. The purpose of the Order was to assist pilgrims to the Holy Land with both defense and medical help, as well as to assist the impoverished. The Order is, in effect, the first and oldest International Organization. The annual pilgrimage to Lourdes is a time when Associations of the Order from throughout the world come together bringing sick people or “malades” from all over the world to experience the healing effects of Lourdes. The Association to which I belong, the Federal Association of the Order of Malta charters a flight which leaves from Baltimore flying directly to Tarbes, about 30 minutes outside of Lourdes. Our group will include members of the Order (Knights and Dames) as well as volunteers and of course the malades and their companions. There are two other associations from the United States, the American and the Western Associations. The three associations from the US ensure that the largest single national presence is American. But even so, on the Sunday International Mass when all the national associations of the Order are there with their malades, we may have as many as 25,000 people at the Mass! The malades are the reason for and the center of attention of the Pilgrimage. All their needs are attended to, they are transported to all the events in rickshaw like carts and have 3-5 members of the Order looking out for them at any one time. The Order of Malta is primarily hospitaler in nature and this is never more evident than during its annual Lourdes Pilgrimage. Although this is very much a working week for me, it is nevertheless one of the most fulfilling weeks of my year.

To this end, the group both professes an orthodox position on the immorality of homosexual acts and respects the human dig-nity of persons who have homosexual feelings. Suggestions for enriching your faith and in-home religious education:

· Register for FORMED.ORG (through our parish website “stmichaelannandale.org” if you are not yet registered). Once registered sign in, click on COMMUNITY and then on OUR COMMUNITY. Banners will be posted there that will get you to suggested material. For example, for a reflection on the Sunday Mass readings click on the artwork in the banner for “Celebrate Easter.” Once that series opens, scroll right or left to get to the current Sunday (May 4 is the third Sunday of Easter).

· Links to other material on FORMED will be placed on the parish website in the future.

· Make sure you are signed up for FLOCKNOTE. To sign up, fill out one of the forms that are at each exit of the church and put it in the basket. Alternatively, take the form home and sign up by text or follow the link at the bottom of the sign-up form. Currently, we have an outstanding six-part series (mini-course) on the Resurrection in progress. It is from WORD ON FIRE ENGAGE (hosted by Bishop Robert Bar-ron). Once you are signed up, you will get an email or text that links you to the talks.

· Please be patient as we learn how to access a lot of great material without overloading anyone’s inbox. We will also try to keep the materials current and relevant.
