Dear Friends in Christ,
Pentecost is a good time to renew our daily use of the following classic prayer to ask the Holy Spirit for His guidance in all facets of life.
Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. V./ Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. R./ And You shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
Please note the following variations in the Mass and confession schedule over the next few weeks:
On Thursday, May 24, at 5:30 pm, Cardinal O’Brien will visit to Confirm 28 of our young people.
On Saturday, May 26 there will be no 8:30 am Mass or 11:30 am Confessions so that Father Larry and I can attend the Diaconal Ordination of six men who will soon be ordained to the priesthood. Please consider joining us for a very beautiful Mass at the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Balti-more.
St. Maria Goretti High School graduation is Saturday, June 2, at 11:00. In order to support our graduates, this might mean we cannot offer confessions at 11:30 am.
On Sunday, June 3, we begin our Summer Schedule with Sunday Masses at 5:15 pm on Saturday evening, 7:30 am, 9:30 am, and 11:30 am Sunday morning, and 5:00 pm Sunday evening in the Extraordinary Form. (There is no change to the daily Mass or confession schedule).
Sunday, June 3, is also Corpus Christi, so the 11:30 am Mass will be followed by a Eucharistic Procession through the streets of Hagerstown. Please join us in bearing witness to our Faith and asking God’s blessings on our City!

serious need for adults and children to be there pray-
ing for a change of mind of those entering. There's
an opportunity for sidewalk counseling if you're
comfortable doing that, but first, prayer at the site is
very powerful. Volunteers are needed 2 days each
week: every Thursday from 9 to 11 AM; every
other Tuesday and every other Saturday from 9
to 11 AM. Open Tuesday, May 22 and June 5;
Thursday, May 24, May 31, and June 7; Satur-
day, June 2. We also need another " shift" to stay
until the women come out after the abortion so we

CAR WASHES TO SUPPORT OUR YOUTH
—Come support our young people going to the
Steubenville summer youth conferences! Car
washes will be held in the walnut street parking
lot on the following dates: April 28 — May 5 —

830 am Mass and go until about 4pm. Cost is by

Baptisms: Baptisms for children of registered pa-rishioners, are scheduled for 12:30 pm on the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of each month. Prior to the Bap-tism, parents are required to attend one of the monthly Baptism Preparation Classes on a specified Sunday at 12:30 pm. Call the parish office to sched-ule a class and a Baptism.

What is the difference between Extreme Unction and the Anointing of the Sick?
They are two names for the same sacrament. Extreme Unction was the name that was given to the sacrament
before the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965). After the Council, the name was changed to the Anointing
of the Sick. The name change coincided with a renewed understanding of the sacrament. Extreme Unction
as the name implies was given to people in extreme (near death) circumstances. “Unction” is simply another
word for anointing. The Anointing of the Sick renewed the Scriptural understanding that the sacrament was
not just for those near death, but was to be given to those who were seriously sick (life threating in a much
broader sense.) We read in the Letter of James, 5:14-15, “Is anyone among you sick? He should summon the
presbyters of the church, and they should pray over him and anoint [him] with oil in the name of the Lord,
and the prayer of faith will save the sick person, and the Lord will raise him up. If he has committed any sins,
he will be forgiven.” According to the Catechism of the Council of Trent (1545-1563), “this Sacrament is to
be administered to those only whose malady is such as to excite apprehensions of approaching death.” Ac-
cording to the current Catechism of the Catholic Church (1997), those who can be anointed are expand-
ed, #1514 “The Anointing of the Sick" is not a sacrament for those only who are at the point of death. Hence,
as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for
him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived." #1515 “If a sick person who received this
anointing recovers his health, he can in the case of another grave illness receive this sacrament again. If dur-
ing the same illness the person's condition becomes more serious, the sacrament may be repeated. It is fitting
to receive the Anointing of the Sick just prior to a serious operation. The same holds for the elderly whose
frailty becomes more pronounced.”

Show your Support by Sponsoring a Flag to be displayed at Your Church during Memorial Day Weekend. See Knight Members or flyer Posted at entrance of Church. $25 donation per flag with proceeds given to ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVCES, INC., the Military Chaplain Scholarship Program, to help fund the Education of Seminarians preparing to become Catholic Chaplain in the U.S. armed Services.
Please consider donating a faded or tattered American flag for a flag retirement ceremony to be held June 9th at the council hall. Donations can be dropped off at the hall.
Pangborn Council Family Picnic will be held Saturday, June 9th starting at 6pm. A Flag Retirement Cere-mony presented by the Boy Scouts and Assembly will highlight this evening.

Summer 2018 Mass Schedule Announcement
For the past year, the Pastoral Council, School Board, Facilities Committee, and Finance Committee have been praying and working hard on some exciting projects. We are currently working on dotting the i’s and crossing the t’s before making a full presentation to you, which I hope to deliver on Pentecost. In the meantime, however, I need to share with you that these projects will mean that over the summer the parking lot here on our main property will not be usable, including the temporary loss of its handicap parking spaces.
This will mean that we only have our Walnut Street Parking lot for use for Sunday Masses, and consequently, over-all space, including entrance and exit, will be significantly reduced.
Therefore, the Staff, Pastoral Council, School Board, Facilities Committee and Finance Committee have advised me that we will need to allow more time for the elderly and handicapped to get to and from their vehicles and more time for the lot to clear after one Mass before people start arriving for the next.
Drawing our inspiration from the success of the Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday schedule, yet with some modifica-tions, these same advisory committees have recommended to me that we observe the following Sunday Mass schedule for the summer: 5:15 pm Saturday 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 11:30 am, 5:00 pm (Extraordinary Form) This summer schedule will begin on June 3rd.
I would like to reiterate that this summer schedule is being recommended to me by these advisory committees, who represent all of you, for the overall good of the members of our community. I certainly understand that any change can be challenging, especially one that affects our Sunday routine. Of course, Father Larry and I are affected, too, by having an earlier start time and a later finish time to our Sunday schedule. But we hope that you can tolerate any inconvenience this may cause you for the sake of the overall good of our community.
I look forward to sharing with you the details of these summer projects in a just a few weeks. In the meantime, your comments about the summer schedule are most welcome. Please feel free to share them with me or a member of one of
