The ROSARY…and the serious side of the Memorial Day weekend…

The following is an excerpt from an account of the courage and devotion to duty of a U.S. Marine Corps Corporal who gave his life for our country. The citation reads: “Discovering seven Iraq (enemy) vehicles in a column attempting to depart, Corporal James L. Dunham and his team stopped the vehicles to search for weapons. As they approached the vehicle, an insurgent leaped out and attacked the Corporal,

wrestling him to the ground as the insurgent released a grenade. Corporal Dunham immediately alerted his fellow Marines to the threat of imminent danger and without hesitation, covered the grenade with his helmet and his body…bearing the brunt of the explosion and shielding his Marines from the blast. In an ultimate and selfless act of bravery in which he was mortally wounded, he saved the lives of at least two fellow Marines.” This is just one of the countless accounts of brave American men and women who have served in our military and given the ultimate sacrifice of their life. May they never be forgotten. Remember our fallen heroes and all of our military in your daily prayers. (Corporal Jason L. Dunham was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President George W. Bush). Remember, you and your family are always invited to take part in our weekly Rosary for Peace, every Saturday at 4:35 p.m., just before Mass.

Bethesda Healing Ministry “For I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will hear you. You will seek me and find me; when

you seek me with all your heart,” says the Lord. (Jeremiah 29:11-13) Bethesda invites and welcomes all who have been burdened with the pain of abortion. Confidential lines are 614-309-0157/614-309-2651. Be sure to “Like” us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/BethesdaHealing.

Pope Francis says, “We must restore hope to young people, help the old, be open to the future, spread love. Be poor among the poor. We need to include the excluded and preach peace.” Thank you to all parishioners who donated to the

Student Council’s service project. Because of your generosity, we collected over $1,100.00! This money was used to purchase over 350 pairs of flip flops. We also were able to give Carson Elementary $350.00 to support their summer programs which include lunches, treats, and a reading program. Finally, we were able to create a “startup” account for next year’s Student Council and we are hopeful to provide another service at the beginning of next school year. Again, we appreciate your kindness and your willingness to help our students help our neighbors.

Pope Francis’ Prayer Intentions for June: Universal: Human Solidarity – That the aged, marginalized, and those who have no one may find – even within the huge cities of the world – opportunities for encounter and solidarity. Evangelization: Seminarians and Novices – That seminarians and men and women entering religious life may have mentors who live the joy of the Gospel and prepare them wisely for their mission.

Ministry Reflections on the Great Commission & the Great Commandment

We continue sharing the responses of ministry groups to the posed questions. A running list of published reflections can be found on our website under LATEST NEWS.LITURGYSacristans

The sacristans work each week to prepare the church for worship. They help prepare a place for God’s people to celebrate the Mass and the sacraments. In their duties they minister to the priests, parish members and community members who visit our church by making it a clean and comfortable place to gather. The sacristans volunteer to be on a team that is scheduled on a rotating basis. New members are always needed and welcomed. Over the last several years some of our older members have “retired,” leaving less teams to fill the rotation.

Lectors

1. How does this committee or group respond to the Great Commission, the Great Commandment and the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in our activities and outreach.Lectors are privileged to proclaim God’s word, and in

so doing, we have a hand in “making disciples of all nations.” As God’s words are read, the congregation hears the wisdom, beauty and truth of God, which draws them closer in union with God and with each other. The very truths that give us the Works of Mercy are presented from the Old and New Testaments. Almost all of the Spiritual Works can result from this ministry directly, and encouragement to carry out the Corporal Works as well.

2. How is prayer an important component of our meeting time together?Lectors are instructed to prepare for the ministry by

studying the readings the night before. By meditating on the readings, a lector can come to a fuller realization of the scripture they will proclaim. Lectors also lead the Angelus and the Prayers of the Faithful for each Mass.

3. How do our activities/programs address the needs of our parish?Along with the priest, the lectors deliver the majority of

the Liturgy of the Word at our Eucharistic celebrations. We put a human face on the truth that God speaks to us through His word. It is very important to proclaim His words with the respect and honor they deserve. In so doing, our parish is drawn closer to God.

4. How do our activities/programs address the needs of those outside our parish?Insofar as we have guests, lectors reach out to

welcome and instruct and invite these visitors.5. Do we have enough people in our committee/group to

accomplish our goal? The ranks of the lectors have been thinning, although

we have recently added six new lectors in the last six months. We could use more lectors.

6. Are there activities or programs we sponsor which no longer seem to be effective or address current needs?

Aside from Lector training, we will occasionally hold evenings of reflections for Lectors. Other than these, there are no other activities or programs to review.

52 Acts of Mercy for the Jubilee Year of Mercy1) Resist sarcasm; it is the antithesis of mercy: “Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth; keep watch, O Lord, at the door of my lips!” (Psalm 141:3).2) Pare down possessions: share your things with the needy.3) Call someone who you know is lonely, even if you understand why they’re lonely. Especially if you do.4) Write a letter of forgiveness to someone. If you cannot send it, sprinkle it with holy water, ask Christ Jesus to have mercy on you both and then burn or bury it.5) Learn to say this prayer: “Dear Lord, bless (annoying person’s name) and have mercy on me!”6) Plan a mini-pilgrimage to a local shrine; make an effort along the way to live the corporal work of mercy of “welcoming the stranger” as Christ.7) Do something kind and helpful for someone who you don’t get along with, or who has wronged you.8) Be mindful of your behavior online. Is that post designed to improve your image … and leave others feeling bad? Are you hammering people in order to serve your anger and humiliate others?9) Have Masses said for the living: friends and family members, even strangers you read/hear about, who are having a hard time.10) Be generous enough to allow someone to help you; people need to feel needed.11) If you didn’t mean to be a pain in the neck to someone, admit you were and ask the person to forgive you.12) Take a tip from Cardinal Timothy Dolan and carry around $5 Starbucks and McDonald’s gift cards for the homeless.13) Take time in prayer to contemplate the good qualities of someone who is difficult for you. Do the same for each member of your family.14) Send a card, flowers, gift or note to someone on the six-month anniversary of his or her loved one’s death. By then, most people have stopped recognizing their grief.15) Offer to babysit for a busy mom to go out and have a couple of hours to herself.16) Make a meal (or buy a gift certificate) for a mom who’s just given birth or adopted a child, or for someone who’s just gone through a loss.17) Hold. Your. Tongue.18) Offer to run an errand (groceries, dry cleaning pick-up, dog-walking) for a busy parent or homebound person.19) If you can’t sit down beside a homeless person to talk for a while today, at least send a donation to a ministry that does do this (such as Christ in the City).20) If you’re sharing a treat, take the smaller portion.21) Memorize the 14 corporal and spiritual works of mercy and show your children what they mean.22) Instead of losing patience with someone online (or in person), try to hear that person’s fear. Ask God for what Solomon asked for: “an understanding heart.”23) Offer to drive an elderly person to Mass.24) Recall a time you were not given the benefit of the doubt, and extend one to someone else.25) Put down the phone and really listen to someone else. With eye contact.26) Have alternative drinks, other than water, for times when those who have been struggling with alcohol come to visit.27) Take advantage of sales to buy small toothpastes, soaps, shampoos, socks and feminine products/toiletries; donate them to parish outreaches or make gift bags and have them ready to hand out where needed.28) Create a short end-of-day ritual to ask for (and extend) forgiveness with those you live with. “Do not let the sun set on your anger” (Eph. 4:26).29) Make a list of your “enemies.” Then, every day, say a prayer for them.30) Make a point to smile, greet or make conversation with someone who is not in your everyday circle.31) Give away something of yours (that you really like) to someone you know would enjoy it.32) Pray a Divine Mercy Chaplet as you are traveling to or from work.33) Make a gratitude journal for your spouse and jot down little things he or she does that you’re grateful for. Bite your tongue and go write in it (or at least read it) the next time you want to criticize in a moment of frustration.34) Learn to make an Examination of Conscience every night. Remembering God’s mercy each night helps us be merciful.35) Respond to provocation with the respect you wish a person would show you.36) Take a few minutes during the week to stop at a church and sit before the Tabernacle simply to be with Christ, the Merciful. If you cannot do that, meditate upon the crucifix.37) Pray a novena for the good of someone you dislike.38) Dig out your most attractive stationery and handwrite an actual letter to someone as a means of demonstrating his or her importance to you.39) Offer to read to someone who is feeling ill or is just feeling blue.40) Ask the Holy Spirit to groan for you when you cannot bring yourself to pray for someone who has done you an injury.41) Lead with a kind comment with friends as well as strangers.42) When conversations devolve into “the dark joy” of gossip, help change the subject.43) Can you play the piano, or any instrument? Can you recite poetry? Give free “concerts” to the forgotten people in nursing homes and assisted-living centers.44) Visit the graves of your ancestors, or visit a local cemetery and walk around, praying a Rosary for all the souls buried there.

If you cannot do that, at least try to make a day, or evening, of recollection.46) Admit your jealousy to yourself and your confessor.47) Offer to pray with someone, even someone you encounter on the street or public transport who looks like they could use it. 48) Keep holy cards, short prayers or blessed medals handy and give them out to people you meet as you are inspired as a blessing to others.49) Offer hospitality in your home to someone or a group of people you would normally never invite over.50) If someone you know seems to lack faith, share some of yours — tell him or her how Christ has changed your life.51) Pay the parking or toll fee for the person behind you.52) Pray every day for the souls in purgatory. Pray for your dead.
