Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Thank you so much for all of you who prayed for and participated in our parish visioning day. I am excited to report to you that we have prayerfully discerned our vision statement. “To be a Holy Spirit-filled beacon of God’s love, guid-ing all into a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ”

Every time I read this, I get excited! It is a very bold and powerful vision! It defines who we are called to be both individually and collectively as a parish. Before we can do anything, we have to be something. We are called to be a beacon of God’s love filled with the Holy Spirit! It is the Holy Spirit in us that will lead us and empower us to be beacons of God’s love. It is the Holy Spirit in us that will provide us with everything we need to guide all into a life-

changing encounter with Jesus Christ! I firmly believe this is a prophetic vision for the times within which we are living. Like the disciples in the Gospel, we are experiencing powerful waves crashing down on us from many directions. Like the disciples, many of us have succumbed to fear, anxiety, doubt, and confusion. Like the disciples, Jesus wants to come to us in the midst of the storms of life and call out “Do not be afraid”. Some of us will step out in faith, like Peter, and walk on water towards Jesus in the midst of the storm. Some of us will begin to sink into the water, like Peter, as soon as we take our eyes off of Jesus, and become overwhelmed by the crashing waves around us. My hope is that all of us will eventually get into the boat with Jesus and let Him bring peace and calm into our lives and lead us into a deeper encounter with Him. This brings me back to the vision statement. When I think of a “beacon”, I think of a light house. What is one of the purposes of a light house? When ships are caught in a violent storm and it becomes so dark that they no longer know in which direction they are headed, the powerful bea-con of light from the light house guides them to safety. The same can be said for each of us at St. Scholastica parish, When the storms of life are crashing in on us, and we are uncertain of which way to go for safety, we must turn to God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to em-power us to become a much needed Holy Spirit-filled bea-con of God’s love to one another and to the world. It is only when we are overflowing with the Holy Spirit and the love of God the Father that we can effectively guide others into a life-changing encounter with Jesus Christ! Come Holy Spirit. Fill the hearts of your faithful. Enkin-dle in them the fire of your love!

Today’s Scripture readings speak about faith. In the First Book of Kings, the prophet Elijah recognizes God, not in the strong wind and earthquake, but in a gentle breeze. In his Letter to the Roman community, St. Paul is frustrated with the Jews in Rome for lacking faith in the truth of his preaching: Christ Jesus as the Messiah. In St. Matthew’s Gospel, the evangelist tells of St. Peter’s effort to join Je-sus, in a violent wind, on the water outside of the boat. When Peter’s lack of faith causes him to begin sinking, Je-sus reaches out and saves him. We, as Christian stewards, seek to deepen our faith in Christ — to make Him the cen-ter of our lives. We accomplish this when we commit to dai-ly prayer, read Scripture, attend Sunday Mass regularly, partake in Holy Communion, and participate in the Sacra-ment of Penance. As Elijah observed, sometimes the Spirit of God is quiet and we must be still and listen for His com-forting words of peace.

Liturgy of the Day

Do we have the courage to place our trust in the Lord? Peter thought he had enough courage when he stepped out of the boat as it was tossed in the waves during a violent storm. But he became frightened and started to sink. Though he began to doubt, he cried out to Jesus and the Lord saved him. When we doubt, may we look to our Savior for strength. Elijah and Peter each encounter the Lord in an unu-sual way in today’s readings. Elijah expected the Lord to come in the wind, in an earthquake, or with fire, but instead it was in a tiny whispering sound. The Lord ap-peared like a ghost to the disciples during a storm and Peter dared to walk across the raging sea. How do we encounter the Lord? Here in this space we encounter the Lord in his Church, gathered together in his name, and in the Eucharist.
