Principal Message

Dear Families,

During the month of November, we celebrate the virtue of peace. Within this month we take a moment to be mindful and remember those we have lost to wars and conflicts. The brave soldiers and peacemakers, past and present, who have protected our rights and our communities are to be honoured. May their actions and sacrifices help us to understand the need to bring peace to our community, school and home. We teach through our Catholic faith lessons, to promote peace and justice for all. Through their words and actions, the students at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys will continue to foster peace within their environment. The Me to We initiatives that we will be participating in this school year will benefit our local and global communities, the grade 7/8 students will be leading these initiatives, more information will be provided later this month.

Yours truly,

WE SCARE HUNGER:

After attending an inspirational Me to We event last month the intermediate

students wanted to extend our Fall food drive and use the slogan: We Scare

Hunger. They prepared and lead the Hallowe’en activities for the kindergarten to

grade 6 students. October 31st was filled with great excitement, creative

costumes and engaging activities for everyone. Let’s keep the spirit of

celebrating and extend our generosity to those in need. Thank you to everyone

who has already supported our local food drive. We will continue receiving

canned goods until November 8th.

REMEMBRANCE DAY:

Our school will be celebrating Remembrance Day on Friday November 10th. All

students will receive a poppy sticker to wear for this service. We ask that families

take a moment of silence on Saturday November 11th at 11:00 a.m. to reflect on

the meaning of this day. If you wish to support programs for veterans please have

your child bring in a money donation to deposit in the Royal Canadian Legion box at

the office. Thank you for your support.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL PARENT COMMITTEE:

Our next CSPC meeting will be on Friday November 10th at 6:30 p.m. in the

school library. The CSPC meetings will be held on the second Friday of every

month. All parents are welcome to come to the meetings to discuss initiatives,

provide support for upcoming events and to learn about what goes on at St.

Marguerite Bourgeoys. On November 10th we will be discussing Our School

Learning Improvement Plan, EQAO results and the Parent Pro-grant that has

been approved for this school year. Your voice is important to this school

community, together we will continue to foster the best learning environment

and spiritual development for your children.

REPORT CARDS:

Student progress report cards will be sent home with the students on

Tuesday November 14th, 2017. Please review the progress report to gain an

understanding of your child’s strengths and needs. The interviews will be

held on the evenings of Wednesday November 15th and Thursday November

16th. An interview request form will be coming home with more details.

Thank you to all the families that submitted the survey regarding the parent-

teacher interviews for this school year. Your feedback was crucial in making

this decision.

It’s not the darkness itself that we must understand. It’s the force behind the darkness and within the darkness ... the force moving through life that we must know. This is the great passage: to see deep into our own nature by meeting its reflection in everything around us. To swim with something very big. To allow the Universe to love us and to love deeply in return … to allow this story to trace itself through the chapters of our life. To live within the miracle. Slowing Down to Remember

November is a time to remember and call to mind those who have served and are still serving in the Canadian Military. Many have paid the ultimate debt to their country, not only with their service, but also with their lives. This is a solemn time. A time for reflection and for honor. Making the time and space to offer remembrance is important.

In our busy, fast paced lives, sometimes it can be difficult to slow down and create that time and space.

At times when we mourn the loss of someone important, our lives can be thrown into darkness. In her captivating new work, Paula D’Arcy begins with her own personal experience of loss and brings the reader with her, explaining how the enveloping darkness eventually began to lift, how night slowly became day again, and how she came to recognize the experience as a natural part of life. Anyone who has experienced great loss, or who has felt lost in the darkness, will gain new hope from The Stars at Night.

Consider using this excerpt from her book The Stars at Night as a “minute contemplation” …..

Sometimes the quest for

happiness can be difficult to

navigate. Just when you think

you have a clue, something

can set you off course. Here

are some tips to help you find

some joy.

1.Reach out to others. You

may have good people in your

life but have been out of

touch. Picking up the phone

and giving old friends a call

can brighten both of your days

and perhaps your lives as well.

2.Remember that happiness

is an inside job. That means

that no one but you can really

make you happy, even though

it may not feel that way.

When I see a smile on the face

of someone I care about, it

makes me happy, especially if

I helped put it there. Maybe it

is an inside job after all.

3.Don’t put all our eggs in

one basket. If you are relying

on one set of circumstances or

person to make you happy, it

probably won’t happen. You

need to broaden your scope of

friends and activities. Also,

know that engaging in new

adventures creates brain

chemicals that add to your

happiness.

4.Trust your gut. When we go

against our instincts, and it

backfires, we usually feel sad.

Follow your intuition and let it

guide you toward people and

things that will make your life

just a tiny bit better.

5. Look at the big picture.

Most of the things that prevent

us from feeling happy are day-

to-day life issues.

Inclusion of mental health to school SLIPs

Once in a while, you go

through something that

makes the little things seem

inconsequential, and this is

when you need to remember

that life is still going on, and

whatever the issue is, it will

end. Look at your life as a

whole—not just the bad

parts.

Happiness can be hard to feel

at times, so don’t think there

is something wrong with you

if you don’t feel it. We all go

through phases, and some

people are just naturally

happier than others, so try to

avoid comparing yourself

with others. The truth is that

happiness is here for you, and

using the techniques above

will allow you to feel more of

it.

Minute Mindfulness: Try these quick “Minute Mindfulness” practices to help you SLOW down…

STOP. Stand up and breathe. Feel your connection to the earth. Tune in to your body. Lower your gaze. Scan your body and notice physical sensations or emotions. Discharge any unpleasant sensations, emotions or feelings on the out breath. Notice any pleasant ones and let them fill you up on the in breath. Observe. Lift your eyes and take in your surroundings. Observe something in your environment that is pleasant and be grateful for it and its beauty. Possibility. Ask yourself what is possible or what is new or what is a forward step.

If you find yourself being reactive, try the following steps: Pause and take one to three big breaths.

Say “step back.” ( You don’t have to physically step back, you can just do it in your mind.) Say “clear head.” Say “calm body.” Breathe again. Say “relax,” “melt” or “ease.”

An aspiration. Decide on an aspiration ( or perhaps you can focus on our Catholic Virtue of the Month). Just ask yourself this question: What is my heart’s aspiration? Pause for about 20 seconds. Do this a second or third time and write down what comes. Perhaps it is to come from love, or to be kind to yourself or others or to be patient.

Once you decide which aspiration you like best, say that at the beginning of the day. This will set you up for your day and your interactions with others (and even with yourself).

Fostering The Family:

The TCDSB Pastoral Plan 2015-18 “ Together With one

Voice: Harmonizing Our Faith Through Family, Parish, and School” 2017 focuses on the

SCHOOL

Family, Parish and School – Unity in Diversity…

Though it is our goal to highlight in depth each community of faith from the educational “village” of family, parish and school every year, it is imperative for us to remember that each of these communities is not simply a discordant or isolated entity; instead, each with the richness of its diversity adds greatness to the harmony of God’s music of love. In other words, the unity of the whole (family, parish and school) does not and should not undermine the uniqueness of the individual. This relationship of unity in diversity reflects St. Paul’s notion of many parts, one body (1 Cor. 12:12-26). This present pastoral plan challenges us as a Board to continue to encourage this ‘symphony’ and build a harmony with ‘ONE VOICE’ in order to develop, celebrate and nurture the wholeness of the human person in our beautiful but sometimes discordant world.
