The Pastor’s Page by Fr . Shawn Wil l iam Cutler

Included are several quotes from St. Jerome which reflect his great insight that was so often packaged in short, digestible phrases and which still carries much food for thought:

“Be at peace with your own soul, then heaven and earth will be at peace with you.”

“A friend is long sought, hardly found, and with difficulty kept.”

“Thank God I am deemed worthy to be hated by the world.”

“True friendship ought never to conceal what it thinks.”

“It is worse still to be ignorant of your ignorance.”

“We must love Christ and always seek Christ’s embraces. Then everything difficult will seem easy.”

“Seek and learn on earth those truths which will remain ever valid in heaven.”

“The Church of Christ has been founded by shedding [her] own blood, not that of others;

by enduring outrage, not by inflicting it. Persecutions have made [her] grow;

martyrdoms have crowned [her].”

“Martyrdom does not consist only in dying for one’s faith. Martyrdom also consists in serving God with

love and purity of heart every day of one’s life.”

“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

“If Christ did not want to dismiss the Jews without food in the desert for fear that they would collapse

on the way, it was to teach us that it is dangerous to try to get to heaven without the Bread of Heaven.”

“Make knowledge of the Scriptures your love… Live with them, meditate on them, make them the

sole object of your knowledge and inquiries.”

“A false interpretation of Scripture causes the Gospel of the Lord to become the gospel of man,

or, which is worse, of the devil.”

“Even while living in the world, the heart of Mary was so filled

with motherly tenderness and compassion for men that no one ever suffered so much for their own

pains as Mary suffered for the pains of her children.”

“So valuable to heaven is the dignity of the human soul

that every member of the human race has a guardian angel

from the moment that person begins to be.”

“Let us live upon earth those things which can call us to heaven.”

“The face is the mirror of the mind, and eyes without speaking confess the secrets of the heart.”

“Beauty when unadorned is adorned the most.”

“Love is not to be purchased, and affection has no price.”

T his week, the Church celebrates the feasts of a variety of great saints and angels! One of her most important saints whose work still influences the Church today is St. Jerome

(347-419). He was born to pagan parents, converted to Catholicism only lukewarmly at first, experienced a genuine assent to Christ later, and worked for the rest of life in service to Jesus and His Church. St. Jerome’s translation of the Bible into Latin (the Vulgate) remained the standard translation alone for centuries, and his translation holds a place of respect among Scripture scholars even today. Like his contemporary, St. Augustine, Jerome was a man well versed in a wide range of arts and sciences, and he wrote extensively on many topics relating to faith and human nature. Jerome rightly has received the title of Doctor of the Church as well as Church Father for his contributions to the growth and development of understanding the faith among so many of her faithful down through the ages.
