NOTES FROM THE PASTOR’S DESKSaint John the Beloved was the son of Zebedee and Salome [Matthew 4:21, 27:56; Mark 15:40, 16:1] and the brother of James. They lived on the shores of Galilee and were fishermen. John was younger and is often depicted as an adolescent in art, without a beard. With his brother, James, John followed John the Baptist when he preached.

There can be little doubt that the two unnamed disciples, who looked on Jesus when the Baptist said "Behold the Lamb of God," were Andrew and John. (John 1:35). Following the Lord, they asked the Lord where He dwelt. Jesus bade them come and see, and they stayed with Him all day. This marked the starting-point of the entire devotion of heart and soul which lasted through the life of the Beloved Apostle.

John apparently followed his new Master to Galilee, and was with Him at the marriage feast of Cana, journeyed with Him to Capernaum. He, James, and Peter, came within the innermost circle of their Lord's friends. The mother of James and John, knowing our Lord's love for the brethren, made special request for them, that they might sit, one on His right hand, the other on His left, in His kingdom [Matthew 20:21]. Their zealous response, of the two brothers, to punish the Samaritans who rejected Jesus gave them the nickname “Sons of Thunder.”

John played an important role at the Last Supper and was the only Apostle to stand at the cross when Jesus was crucified and it was there that he was committed by our Lord to the highest of privileges, the care of His mother [John 19:27]. John the "disciple whom Jesus loved" and Peter were the first to receive the news from Mary Magdalene of the Resurrection [John 20:2], and they hastened at once to the sepulchre, and there when Peter was restrained by awe, John impetuously "reached the tomb first."

When Christ appeared on the shore in the dusk of morning, John was the first to recognize Him. The last words of the Gospel reveal the attachment which existed between the two apostles, Peter and John. They were fellow-workers together in the first step of Church expansion. And John, whose wrath had been kindled at the unbelief of the Samaritans, was the first to receive these Samaritans as brethren [Luke 9:54, Acts 8:14].

He probably remained at Jerusalem until the death of the Virgin Mary, though tradition asserts that he took her to Ephesus. When he went to Ephesus is uncertain (c. 97 AD) but it was probably there that he wrote his Gospel and the Book of Revelation.

Tradition, more or less trustworthy, completes the history saying that John was taken to Rome during Christian persecutions and escaped martyrdom. In his old age, when unable to do more, he was carried into the assembly of the Church at Ephesus, and his sole exhortation was, "Little children, love one another."

The date of his death cannot be fixed with anything precision, but it is certain that he lived to a very advanced age and was the only Apostle not martyred. He is buried in Ephesus. Saint John is called “The Apostle,” “The Divine,” “The Evangelist” and “The Beloved.” He is represented holding scripture with an eagle, symbolic of his gospel which, unlike the three other gospels, has an elevated focus on Christ from the very beginning.

As we have with our new depiction of him in our church, Saint John is also found holding a chalice with reference to the cup of wine shared at the Last Supper (Matthew 26:27). Additionally, this symbol is found in the words of Christ to John and James: "My chalice indeed you shall drink" (Matthew 20:23). A chalice, from which issues a snake, is another depiction of when John was supposed to have been given poison to drink by his persecutors, but through the grace of God was rendered innocuous.

-Fr. Joe

His feast day is December 27.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS

August 21: Through Mary, Jesus came into the world. She nurtured him, witnessed his passion, and stood by the apostles at Pentecost. Mary’s life mirrors God’s relationship with us during times of bliss and agony. Despite being the mother of God, she focused on those in need, the hungry, the poor, the lowly. Let go of your importance today and join Mary.

PARENTING POINTERS

August 21: Imposing a punishment is no fun for the parent or the child. First parents must show self-discipline in deciding the best action, then execute it with loving firmness. What’s your discipline of choice - an extra chore, removal of a privilege, time-out...?

VOCATIONS

Today’s psalm response exhorts us to “go out to all the world and tell the Good News.” While that is the vocation of every baptized person, God calls some to do it through the priesthood or religious life. For two thousand years, countless women and men have dedicated their lives as sisters, brothers, deacons and priests. Is God calling you to join them? Call or write Father Norm Carroll, Diocesan Director of Priestly and Religious Vocations (302-573- 3113, [email protected]).

Be sure to visit our website: www.cdow.org/vocations!

WORTHY TEACHERS

All who undertake to teach must be endowed with deep love, the greatest patience, and, most of all, profound humility. The Lord will find them worthy to become fellow workers with him in the cause of truth.

Ministry Minute “ROOTED IN FAITH; GROWING DISCIPLES.”

This week, Luke talks about Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. Along the way, someone asked Jesus “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” Jesus replies “Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I tell you, will attempt to enter but will not be strong enough.” Bring It Home by asking; are you strong enough to enter the Kingdom of God? Practice a Work of Mercy this week. Forgive someone who has hurt you, talk to someone who is doubting, help at a food pantry, donate clothes to those less fortunate. Take time to talk to each other, really listening, and not just talking.

DISCIPLINE

It is no accident that the words "disciple" and "discipline" are nearly identical. Their relationship in Christian faith and life, however, has fallen somewhat out of favor in the past generation, as certain prescribed Church rules and regulations have been reduced and relaxed. These rules were often referred to as "disciplines." We are mistaken, however, to think that it no longer takes discipline to follow Christ. The Letter to the Hebrews assures us of that today. Our discipline is more like that of an athlete pursuing a victory or a personal best, or a musician striving for a concert career or to master a new piece of music. This discipline comes from desire, not from regulations. It was the desire to do the will of God that led Jesus on the path to his cross. It is that same desire he encourages in us today: to strive to enter through the narrow gate, to find ourselves in the kingdom with a surprising assortment of people who are there not because of mere observation of rules, but out of a genuine desire to recline at the table of the heavenly banquet.

St. John’s Adult Choir Needs You!

Do you enjoy singing? Do you enjoy being with fun loving good hearted people? Are you looking for a fun, meaningful way to serve the church? Please consider joining our choir. We sing each week at the 11:30 Mass (except during the summer) and rehearse each Thursday in the Church at 7.

We are in need of some new singers of all ages (18+) to keep our music mission going. You don’t have to read music, just be able to carry a tune. We are a supportive group and will help you learn the music. We understand that people have busy lives and are flexible if you can’t make it every week. If you are interested or have any questions, please contact our director, Joe Ambrosino. You can call him at 302-650-0227 or email him at [email protected]

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults

“in their own words…”

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), the process by which a person is brought into full communion in the Catholic faith will begin at St. John the Beloved on Monday September 12th at 7:00 PM.

Here, “in their own words”, are the ways our recent candidates have expressed how their RCIA experience has impacted their lives.

“Both my wife and I want to be better Christians for our three young children… The RCIA process has been a positive and encouraging experience for both of us… It has helped us look beyond the distractions of daily life and to focus on what really matters...”

“I have attended St. John’s for 16 years with my wife… I felt I was not part of the community during Mass as I could not receive communion… RCIA has really been an enjoyable experience… Good order and the firmness of my faith in Christ is growing day by day…”

“I look forward to Monday nights at RCIA… I am learning so much… I have met some great people and parishioners have been so welcoming…”

Come and see for yourself on Monday September 12th. You will be glad you did! For more information please take one of the brochures found in the rack in the back of the church and contact Deacon Tom Bailey, 302-559-6458, or [email protected] for answers to questions or to register.
