ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE PARISH HALL KITCHEN -- READY FOR REFURBISHING! Dear Parishioners of St. John the Apostle, The time has come for our 50+ year old parish hall kitchen to get a badly needed facelift! Father Rosenbaum and the Finance Council have approved and will fund the majority of the cost of this project. The project timeline is 6 weeks beginning in June, 2020. We’re looking forward to repairing and updating this space for all of our members to use and enjoy, and we would appreciate your support for this project benefitting our church community. The Kitchen Project committee is asking for your donations to cover the cost of the new appliances. Donations in any amount are welcome. Just place your donation in an envelope marked Kitchen Project and drop it in the collection basket at Mass or send it to the parish office. Please consider donating to this parish project and thanks again for your support of St. John the Apostle and our parish community. Sincerely, Kitchen Project Committee

Stewardship Prayer

Lord God, You alone are the source of every good gift, of the vast array of our universe, and the mystery of each human life. We praise you and thank you for your great power and your tender, faithful love. Everything we are and everything we have is your gift, and after having created us you have given us into the keeping of Your Son, Jesus Christ.

Fundamental Right and Elections As the election draws near, we are hearing more and more about health care, education, the war on terrorism, and other important topics. All of these are, to be sure, very important. However, the most important topic is the one that few people (particularly politicians) want to talk about: abortion. One might ask, "But how is abortion more important than quality education?" Easy. A child cannot receive a quality education once he/she is aborted. It is certainly a noble goal to ensure that every child receives a qual-ity education, but when one-third of children die before they reach kindergarten, we have failed in providing them with a quality education. The same is true for other issues. Certainly children should have access to proper health care, but why is health care important? Health care is important because we value human life and seek to protect it from harm. Abortion, conversely, says that the purpose of health care is to destroy life, not to nurture it. In short, every humanitarian goal (and there are many of them) rests on the premise of the value and protection of human life.

“The greatest destroyer of peace in the world today is abortion, because it is a direct war, a direct killing.” Mother Teresa of Calcutta

“La fuerza más destructive de la paz del mundo de hoy es el aborto, porque es una Guerra directa, un asesinato directo.”

“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION There is a delightful character in the original Dr. Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the message that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in

Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faithful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory.

Feast of the Ascension, the day commemorating Christ’s return to heaven forty days after his Resurrection. It is observed on the Thursday before the Seventh Sunday of Easter, and is a holy day of obligation in the universal Church. The Ascension is the final event of Jesus’ visible earthly ministry. The Feast of the Ascension may be regarded as the day on which Jesus, in his glorified body, took his seat at the right hand of God. This feast may also be interpreted metaphorically as an expression of the enduring relationship between the transcendent Jesus and the community he left behind. It was through the Ascension that Jesus’ supremacy over creation was revealed; it was the Ascension, too, which made possible the sending of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. Just as the Resurrection expressed the reality of Jesus’ triumph over death, revealing Jesus as the Risen Christ, so the Ascension assures believers that Jesus is eternally present with God. After the Ascension, Jesus was no longer present among his followers in a physical sense; paradoxically, the ascended Jesus is forever present in the world.
