Dear Friends of St. John the Baptist,

As we embark on our Lenten journey the Church has asked us to

take part in prayer, fasting, and almsgiving; so that we may be trans-

formed to be more like Christ.

Let’s begin with prayer. How might we pray this Lent? We can

ponder the daily readings for Lent. Or we may pray while sitting at a

traffic light or standing in line. We can pray while watching a sunset

or while doing our daily chores. Following are a few prayers that you

might like to incorporate into your daily prayer routine.

No matter what we do for Lent, let’s remember that we believe the

Risen Jesus walks with us every step of the way!

Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. David

Ash Wednesday Blessing

Merciful God,

you called us for Christ in the wa-

ters of Baptism. Look upon us as

we enter these Forty Days bearing

the mark of ashes, and bless our

journey through the desert of Lent

to the font of rebirth. May our

fasting be hunger for justice; our

alms, a making of peace; our

prayer, the chant of humble and

grateful hearts. All that we do and

pray is in the name of Jesus, for in

his Cross you proclaim your love

forever and ever. Amen.

Lenten Meal Blessing

We bless you, Lord, and we

praise you, for you have

given us this meal to share,

provided by the earth and

prepared by human hands. Help us re-

member those who cannot eat because of

poverty or sickness. Let the brief hunger

we feel this Lent make us hunger even

more for justice. May this meal

strengthen us to do your will. Blessed be

God for ever. All: Blessed be God for ever.

Act of Contrition

O my God, I am heartily sorry for hav-

ing offended you, and I detest all my

sins because of your just punishments,

but most of all because they offend

you, my God, who are all good and

deserving of all my love. I firmly re-

solve with the help of your grace to sin

no more and to avoid

the near occasion of

sin. Amen.

Blessed Are Those

Blessed are those who remain faithful while

enduring evils inflicted on them by others,

and forgive them from their heart.

Blessed are those who look into the eyes of

the abandoned and marginalized, and show

them their closeness.

Blessed are those who see God in every

person, and strive to make others also dis-

cover him.

Blessed are those who protect and care for

our common home.

Blessed are those who renounce their own

comfort in order to help others.

Blessed are those who pray and work for full

communion between Christians.

All these messengers of God’s mercy and

tenderness, and surely they will receive

from him their merited reward. -Pope Francis
