SPIRITUAL READING & REFLECTION

NEXT SUNDAY’S GOSPEL READING ● MARK 15:1-39 PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD

As soon as morning came, the chief priests with the elders and the scribes, that is, the whole Sanhedrin held a council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate questioned him, “Are you the king of the Jews?” He said to him in reply, “You say so.” The chief priests accused him of many things. Again Pilate questioned him, “Have you no answer? See how many things they accuse you of.” Jesus gave him no further answer, so that Pilate was amazed.

Now on the occasion of the feast he used to release to them one prisoner whom they requested. A man called Barabbas was then in prison along with the rebels who had committed murder in a rebellion. The crowd came forward and began to ask him to do for them as he was accustomed. Pilate answered, “Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” For he knew that it was out of envy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead. Pilate again said to them in reply, “Then what do you want me to do with the man you call the king of the Jews?” They shouted again, “Crucify him.” Pilate said to them, “Why? What evil has he done?” They only shouted the louder, “Crucify him.” So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them and, after he had Jesus scourged, handed him over to be crucified.

The soldiers led him away inside the palace, that is, the praetorium, and assembled the whole cohort. They clothed him in purple and, weaving a crown of thorns, placed it on him. They began to salute him with, “Hail, King of the Jews!” and kept striking his head with a reed and spitting upon him. They knelt before him in homage. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak, dressed him in his own clothes, and led him out to crucify him.

They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross.

They brought him to the place of Golgotha —which is translated Place of the Skull — They gave him wine drugged with myrrh, but he did not take it. Then they

crucified him and divided his garments by casting lots for them to see what each should take.It was nine o’clock in the morning when they crucified him. The inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” With him they crucified two revolutionaries, one on his right and one on his left. Those passing by reviled him, shaking their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself by coming down from the cross.” Likewise the chief priests, with the scribes, mocked him among themselves and said, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also kept abusing him.

At noon darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon. And at three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” Some of the bystanders who heard it said, “Look, he is calling Elijah.” One of them ran, soaked a sponge with wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink saying, “Wait, let us see if Elijah comes to take him down.” Jesus gave a loud cry and breathed his last.

Here all kneel and pause for a short time.

The veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. When the centurion who stood facing him saw how he breathed his last he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

Please join us here, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, during this season of Lent in praying the Rosary before each weekend Mass for our President, Public Officials and the Unborn.  The Rosary will be followed by the following prayer.  If you wish, please keep this prayer and join us in reciting it.

A PRO-LIFE PRAYER FOR OUR PRESIDENT, PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND THE UNBORN

Lord God, Author of Life and Source of Eternal Life,

Move the hearts of all our public officials and especially our President, to fulfill their responsibilities worthily and well to all

those entrusted to their care.

Help them in their special leadership roles, to extend the mantle of protection to the most vulnerable, especially the defenseless unborn, whose lives are threatened with extermination by an

indifferent society.

Heavenly Father, in Your love for us, protect against the wickedness of the devil, those helpless little ones to whom You

have given the gift of life.

Touch with pity the hearts of those women pregnant in our world today who are not thinking of motherhood.

Help them to see that the child they carry is made in Your image - as well as theirs - made for eternal life.

Dispel their fear and selfishness and give them true womanly hearts to love their babies and give them birth and all the needed

care that a mother can give.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

One God, forever and ever. Amen

PRO-LIFE COMMITTEE

The Supreme Court has scheduled three days of oral argument on March 26th, 27th and 28th on the constitutional issues surrounding the new federal health care law – the Affordable Care Act.

If the federal mandate is ruled unconstitutional, then the troubling religious liberty issues disappear.

That our Supreme Court may consider this complex legal matter with clarity, please join us after the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass on March 26th and 27th and before Mass on the 28th in reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet.

On another issue: Please call the Senators from your state and thank him/her for supporting the Blunt Amendment and for their support of religious liberty. North Carolina: Senator Richard Burr at 202-224-3154South Carolina:  Senator Jim DeMint at 202-224-6121 Senator Lindsey Graham at 202-224-5972

2nd Quarter Schedules will be posted in the ‘safe room’ on the corkboard and in the outside glass bulletin board for all to see.

Holy Week Liturgical Ministers will be contacted this coming week and are separate from the 2nd Quarter Schedule.

If you have any changes in your mailing address, phone number or your availability to serve (vacation, work, illness etc) please contact Theresa Fitch in the church office @ [email protected]

All ministers are asked to check the posted schedules each quarter to be sure of their assignments. If any ‘assigned’ minister did not receive their schedule in the mail, please contact Theresa ASAP.

Attn Lectors: After the second reading and prayerful reflection, be sure to move the lectionary to a shelf in the ambo.

On May 8, the people of North Carolina will have the opportunity to amend the state Constitution to preserve the definition of marriage as being between one man and one woman. Both of North Carolina’s Bishops are urging Catholics to vote FOR marriage. Learn more at www.CatholicVoiceNC.org

DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY AND NINE-DAY NOVENA!

Divine Mercy Sunday Service will take place on Sunday April 15, 2011 @2:45pm and the Nine (9) day Divine Mercy Novena will begin on Good Friday April 6, 2012 following the 3:00pm Good Friday Service

and will continue each day at 3:00pm to Divine Mercy Sunday.

This is a wonderful time to celebrate the great mercy our Lord has for each one of us. This feast adds so much more meaning to the Easter Celebrations. It was Jesus, Himself who asked for it to be celebrated on the Second Sunday following Easter. There is a plenary indulgence offered at Divine Mercy Sunday as long as you do the following:

1) Begin the Divine Mercy Novena on Good Friday 2) Go to Confession up to 20 days before or after Divine Mercy Sunday. (There will be NO confessions on Divine Mercy Sunday) 3) Attend Divine Mercy Service and participate in the prayers. 4) Receive Holy Communion in a State of Grace on Divine Mercy Sunday. 5) Do Good Works of Charity.

Our Lord Jesus said to St. Faustina, “The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On that day all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be like scarlet… Mankind will not have peace until it turns to the Fount of Mercy.” (Diary 699) The plenary indulgence does not change the promises of our Lord. Rather it provides the Church’s highest mark of approval and endorsement.

DIVINE MERCY NOVENA

Jesus asked that the Feast of Divine Mercy be preceded by a Novena to the Divine Mercy which would begin on Good Friday. He gave St. Faustina an intention to pray for on each day of the Novena, saving for the last day the most difficult intention of all, the lukewarm and the indifferent of whom He said:

“These souls cause Me more suffering than all the others; it was from such souls that My Soul felt the most revulsion in the Garden of Olives. It was: ‘My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass Me by.’ The last hope of salvation for them is to flee to My Mercy.” In her dairy, St. Faustina wrote that Jesus told her; “On each day of the Novena you will bring to My Heart a different group of souls and you will immerse them in this ocean of My mercy…On each day you will beg My Father on the strength of My Passion for the graces for their souls.”

This Novena begins on Good Friday and ends on Divine Mercy Sunday.

Focus on Educational and Multicultural Ministries

Hispanic Ministry Provides Evangelization Workshop Starting late last summer, a vicariate wide workshop on apologetics/defending your faith was held for 12 weeks at St. Vincent de Paul in Charlotte. Fifty-five participants attended and were trained in order to evangelize and be able to respond to the arguments presented by other denominations that confuse and lure the Hispanic people away from the Catholic Church. " I feel very blessed of to have been able to attend and to learn so much about my faith" , said Robert Rodriguez, " mainly because this type of material is not offered at the parish level."

The 34th Diocesan Youth Conference was held on May 13-15 at the Ridgecrest Conference Center in Black Mountain. More than 200 high school students from across the diocese attended the conference which featured daily Mass, praise and worship music, workshops, skits and awards. Pictured here the students are receiving communion from Fr. Adrian Porras (left) and Fr. Benjamin Roberts.

Diocesan youth enjoy the Fall Retreat

High school youth from around the diocese gathered to reflect on being “made in the image of God.” These Youth Ministry retreats, held in the fall and spring of the year are led by teams of teens and adults and include prayer, games, activities, presentations, group sharing, Reconciliation, Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, Holy Mass, and much more.
