~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Continued Support for St. John’s Church
The parish is grateful for the generosity of its parishioners through weekly collections. Please consider signing up with Faith Direct, our electronic giving program. It is a
safe and secure program already used by many of our families. At this critical time, it is important to continue to support our parish. Please go to www.sjtb.org for a
direct link to our parish on Faith Direct. There are options for weekly contributions, offertory catch up, and one time
donations. Donations can still be mailed to the Church, dropped in the mail slot in the side door of the office or
dropped in the collection box if you attend Sunday Mass. Thank you and God bless you for your support of St. John’s!
On Wednesday, July 22, the Church celebrates the feast of St Mary Magdalene. Archbishop Roche, secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship, wrote in 2016 of the Magdalene: “She has the honour to be the first witness of the Lord’s resurrection, the first who saw the empty tomb and the first to hear the truth about his resurrection. Christ showed special consideration and mercy to this woman who showed her love for Christ by seeking him in her anguish and suffering in the garden, or as Saint Anselm says in the prayer mentioned above with “the tears of humility.” In this way it is possible to highlight the contrast between the woman present in the garden of paradise and the woman present in the garden of the resurrection. The first spread death where there was life; the second announced life from a sepulchre, the place of death. As Gregory the Great underlines: “Indeed because a woman offered death to a man in Paradise, a woman announces life to the men from the tomb.” Yet, there is more, as we see precisely in the garden of the resurrection where the
Lord says to Mary, “Do not cling to me.” This is an invitation to enter into an experience of faith that goes beyond materi-alistic assumptions and the human grasping after the divine Mystery which is not simply addressed to Mary but to the en-tire Church. This is an ecclesial moment! This is an important lesson for every disciple of Jesus Christ to neither seek hu-man securities nor the vainglory of this world, but in faith to seek the living and risen Christ!” CCD 2020-2021. We are planning to resume an online/in-class hybrid model for catechetical instruction in the fall. At pre-sent, the plan is to offer in-class instruction only for the sacramental preparation classes, namely, second grade and eighth grade; other grades will be offered homeschooling options supplemented by in-house online content developed by the par-ish. As Virginia continues through Phase Three and the local school systems adjust their educational planning, we will ad-just accordingly. Finalized plans will be rolled out in upcoming weeks. DIVINE MERCY SAID: "When you reflect upon what I tell you in the depths of your heart, you profit more than if you had read many books. Oh, if souls would only want to listen to My voice when I am speaking in the depths of their hearts, they would reach the peak of holiness in a short time." (St. Faustina Diary, 584) "Used with permission of the Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception of the B.V.M."
From the Office of the Bishop regarding the 2020 Census Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Every ten years, our country conducts a census to count the number of men, women, and children residing in the United States. The goal of the census is to determine how to allocate billions of dollars in funding towards programs designed to reduce poverty and support families, and the Catholic church relies on the census to provide an accurate count in order to serve those in need effectively. I encourage you to participate in the census count. Many avoid counting themselves or family members in the cen-sus, and this results in incorrect data that drastically effects the allocation of resources for schools, legislative and vot-ing districts, and the planning of organizations and busi-nesses in the community. There are mandated protections that prohibit the US Census Bureau from sharing the infor-mation collected with law enforcement and other govern-ment organizations, so your individual information is confi-dential. Once again, I urge you to be among the counted, and know that the Diocese of Arlington is here to support you and guide you if you have any questions or concerns. Please be assured of my prayers for you and your families. May Our Lord Jesus bless you and keep you in His care. Sincerely in Christ, Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge
PRAYER LIST
For all the shut-ins of our parish.
7/19/20 Message from Our Pastor
We have heard from many parishioners who have expressed concern that the majority of our parishioners
do not wear masks while in church. To reaffirm the diocesan policy, ALL parishioners are "expected" to
wear masks in church. No where is the word "required" used, so it appears it is not strictly mandatory. I realize one can find scientific and medical authorities on both
sides of the issue, so confusion is to be expected. However, there's an old saying "better safe, than sorry"! I don't believe that the parish should be more restrictive
or demanding than the diocese. I pray all of you stay well!
