ST. JOHN THE APOSTLE PARISH HALL KITCHEN -- READY FOR REFURBISHING! Dear Parishioners of St. John the Apostle, The time has come for our 50+ year old parish hall kitchen to get a badly needed facelift! Father Rosenbaum and the Finance Council have approved and will fund the majority of the cost of this project. The project is currently waiting on permits. We’re looking forward to repairing and updating this space for all of our members to use and enjoy, and we would appreciate your support for this project benefitting our church community. The Kitchen Project committee is asking for your donations to cover the cost of the new appliances. Donations in any amount are welcome. Just place your donation in an envelope marked Kitchen Project and drop it in the collection basket at Mass or send it to the parish office. Please consider donating to this parish project and thanks again for your support of St. John the Apostle and our parish community. Sincerely, Kitchen Project Committee
TO BIND AND TO LOOSE When Jesus says to Peter “whatever you bind” or “whatever you loose” in today’s Gospel, he describes a distinct power that emerges from Peter’s faith in Jesus. The capacity to bind or to loose suggests a new ability, both to restrain or block forces that harm the community of faith, and also to release or liberate energies that strengthen the community. It might be helpful to observe, within your own parish or faith community, where God might be working now. Perhaps you can see persons and groups working to restrain toxic forces of resentment or fear. You might see those who are releasing new energies, and empowering the faithful to care for their neighbors. When we are grounded in a prayerful trust relationship with Jesus, we can receive this power to participate in God’s work, to bind and to loose.

Our efforts are based on SAFETY and ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE in the context of CATHOLIC IDENTITY.
SAFETY: In keeping with our responsibility in opening our schools in the context of Coronavirus, the following will be required without compromise. As with our Churches, WE
CANNOT fulfill our charge without providing the safest environment possible for our teachers, students, administrative personnel or other employees.
Thus, it will be required:
1. To utilize masks throughout the school 2. Maintaining six-foot social distancing 3. Regular hand washing and sanitizing the school daily 4. Temperature check each morning
It is recognized that some may have different opinions about these measures. Nonetheless, they are
universally advocated by recognized experts and medical scientists. We want to protect all to the very best of our ability.
ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN THE CONTEXT OF CATHOLIC IDENTITY
As has been their practice, the schools will do all possible to retain the standards of Academic rigor, to enable the students to grow and achieve their intellectual capacity. Catholic culture and formation will continue to be the context in which the
education is imparted. I am very grateful to Dr. Michael Boyle, Superintendent of Schools, his team and the
dedicated Principals, teachers, and volunteers who are spending enormous time in achieving this possibility of re-opening our schools. They enjoy my unwavering support. With appropriate confidence, I am optimistic that our schools will obtain certification
for re-opening. This certification will be issued by Dr. Boyle and our Catholic Schools Office. No school will be able to open without certification. Going to this extent and
the considerable effort involved are representative of how greatly we value Catholic Education. Please join me in fervent prayer that the Good Lord will guide us on this journey. Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Richard E. Pates Apostolic Administrator Diocese of Joliet

DID Y0U KNOW SAINT MONICA (332-387) She had smiles for the neighbors, though her husband found her religion and the charity it inspired annoying. She made tearful prayers in private for a son, outwardly self-assured but, as his mother knew, inwardly restless, and whose girlfriend of a dozen years had borne his child out of wedlock. Though not the first or last such mother and son, Monica and Augustine are the Church’s most famous, so we keep their feast days back to back, with Monica’s, fittingly, first. To Rome she followed Augustine, then to Milan, where years of prayer—and nagging—finally bore fruit in his conversion by Saint Ambrose. For six months, mother and son enjoyed the blessing of rediscovering each other. Just in time! On the way home to North Africa, Monica took sick and died near Rome. No child who has mourned a parent can read, unmoved, Augustine’s tender account, in his Confessions, of Monica’s last days. At this time of the year, when parents watch apprehensively as children leave for school, may Monica’s perseverance and Augustine’s long-prayed-for conversion ease anxiety and kindle hope.
