Giving Tuesday

Pinellas Hope The Tuesday after Thanksgiving

has been designated as a day of giving.

We are constantly exposed to advertising on tv,

in the newspaper and on radio telling us to buy,

buy, buy for the “holidays.” Thanksgiving and

Christmas should be about giving, but not just

giving things. It should be about giving thanks,

giving love, giving necessities to those in need

and giving financially to those who help the

needy, the underprivileged, the homeless.

We at St. John Vianney parish recently started a

new outreach program to help feed the residents

of Pinellas Hope. The people living there were

homeless. They now have shelter; be it a tent or

one of the small individual living quarters. They

have agreed to work on rebuilding their lives,

finding employment and abiding by the rules.

Pinellas Hope is dependent on the community,

the churches, the service organizations and other

outreach groups to provide food for their

residents. We have agreed to provide one dinner

per month. You can help by making a donation

on Giving Tuesday. The flier was in last week’s

bulletin and will again be in the bulletin next

week. Thank you for your generous spirit. Please

keep this project in your prayers as well. Oh, if

you want to be part of the team that cooks and

serves the food, contact Frank at the parish office.

Annual Pastoral Appeal Don’t you just love this time of year? This week

we will celebrate Thanksgiving. We will pause to

count our blessings while reflecting

on the many people that will be

alone or will be without the basic

necessities of life. On Thanksgiving

Day, many of us will gather at the

9 a.m. Mass and take the time, as a church family,

to give thanks. The collection Thanksgiving Day is

donated to our local St. Vincent de Paul Society so

they may continue to minister to the hundreds of

people who pass through their office each month.

For many of us it is hard to believe there are so

many people in our community in need of assis-

tance. I, for one, am very thankful to be a part of

the team providing for these needs; to have the

ability to contribute, in my small way. If you join

us for Mass Thursday, remember the collection

will go to St. Vincent de Paul. Oh, and if you are

able, bring a few non-perishable items to help fill

the pantry. As for APA, thank you to all who have so gener-

ously given of their treasure. APA also helps

provide for the many people in need of help.

If you have not yet given, there is still time.

We have until the end of December to raise our

fair share. Please continue to pray for the success

of our campaign as it is the source of comfort

and care to so many people. God bless.

Why Did Jesus Fold the Napkin

Christ Renews His Parish Thanksgiving is Thursday and

this is an interesting thought about

the Gospel of John 20:7 where it says the napkin

which was over Jesus’ face was neatly folded and

placed at the head of the stony coffin. After Mary

Magdalene told Simon Peter and the other disci-

ple someone took the body, they ran to the tomb

and the other disciple stopped and looked in and

saw the linen cloth lying there, but he didn’t go in.

Simon Peter also noticed the linen wrappings

lying there while the cloth that covered Jesus’

head was folded and lying to the side. The importance of that is very significant, but you

must understand a little about Hebrew tradition

of that day. The folded napkin had to do with the

Master and Servant tradition. After the servant set

the table he waited, out of sight, until the master

finished eating. The master would rise, wipe his

fingers, mouth and beard and wad up the napkin

and toss it on the table. The wadded napkin

meant, “I’m finished…” But if the master got up,

folded the napkin and laid it beside his plate, the

servant would not dare touch the table because

the folded napkin meant, “I’m coming back!” The team of Christ Renews His Parish wishes you

a blessed Thanksgiving!

True Reformers: Saints of the Catholic

Reformation (Book) Who are the true benefactors of the

human race? Explorers? Scientists?
