SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Decimo Séptimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
JULY 28th 2019
ASKING FOR HELP The Beatitudes praise the poor in spirit. One characteristic of those who are poor in spirit is their ability to ask for help; they know when others can provide what they lack. Today’s readings encourage us to practice poverty in spirit by asking God for what we need. What could be more natural than to ask God for good things? God is, after all, the inven-tor of goodness and the giver of all good things. Asking God for help puts us in conversation with God. These conversations take many forms. The reading from Genesis shows Abraham bantering with God like a skilled negotiator, while Saint Paul’s letter to the Colossians praises God for answering us even when we don’t deserve it. In Saint Luke’s Gos-pel, Jesus not only gives us words to use in our con-versations with God (the Our Father), but also prom-ises that God always listens to our prayers. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SEMINARIAN’S MESSAGE —Treville Belcher MENSAJE DEL SEMINARISTA– Treville Belcher
Jeremiah 29:13 Psalm 119:10 Keep Asking In today’s culture, with our quick and effortless access to the internet and social media, with so much that is easily and readily available to us, “patience” can be considered something of the past. We instinctively wonder “Why should I wait? Why not now?” We may also wonder “Why do I need to ask someone else? Why can’t I get it myself? If I must ask, how do I know I will get exactly what I want?” Our response can be to slip into consumer-based lifestyles. “I get what I want by myself,” becomes our motto for our day-to-day activities and even our relationships. It is then easy to see how this mindset affects our relationship with God. We no longer see God as a Father who wants to pro-vide but as a lazy bystander who is indifferent towards even our basic needs. The readings this weekend focus on God the Father’s invita-tion to a relationship. In the first reading, Abraham repeat-edly requests for God to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if he can find a certain number of righteous people, lowering the number with every request. Initially it seems as if God keeps changing His mind. But looking closely we see that God never objects to Abraham asking. On the contrary God consents to Abraham’s repetitive asking. It’s almost as if he gives Abraham a blank check and tests him to learn the depths of God’s providence. He WANTS Abraham to ask. We may question, “If God knows everything, why does Abraham have to ask?” On a more personal level, we may also question, “If God knows everything, why do I have to ask?” The act of asking makes us more aware of our need to ask. It creates a sense of identity. It establishes a relationship. I need. I ask. Another provides. I receive. Asking also requires an amount of effort or giving of one-self. This builds on a relationship because true relationships require mutual effort. This distinguishes us from plants, animals, or robots, who are designed with basic functions, senses, or programing, and are incapable of having true, self-giving relationships. We are not robots that are made for fixing. We are children made for relationship, specifical-ly with Our Father. Our Blessed Lord makes this clear in the Gospel. In the Our Father, He specifically instructs us to ask the Father to “give us this day our daily bread.” He makes our asking a crucial part of prayer. He orients our prayer as a relation-ship with the Father. He teaches that our prayer is not a “once and never again” event but continuous acts of asking and receiving. In doing so, He reveals to us the true nature of God. God the Father ALWAYS desires to give us what we need. He ALWAYS desires to be in relationship with us. In continuously providing for us, God reveals that what He truly gives us is Himself. Our Blessed Lord confirms this. The Father readily gives us the Holy Spirit, the very Love of the Father and the Son. He wants to bring us in total com-munion with Himself. All we must do is ask. Let us not fall into sadness, thinking ourselves unimportant to God. Nor let us fall into laziness, thinking no effort in our relationship with the Father is required. In Christ, we have received the Spirit of adoption. We are beloved sons and daughters of the Father through Baptism. Let us humble ourselves and ask Him to reveal Himself more, especially in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Trust in the promise of Christ. Let us ask…and we shall receive.
Quiere traernos en total comunión consi-go mismo. Pidamos... y recibiremos

Stroke Scan Plus will be at St. HENRY - LAKE CHARLES - LA on August 9, 2019 to provide life-saving, wellness ultrasound screenings. It is important to perform preventive maintenance for ourselves yearly. Do you have high blood pressure or high cholester-ol, diabetes, or a family history of heart dis-ease, stroke, abdominal aneurysm or internal can-cers? If so, do not miss this opportunity for early detec-tion of a possibly serious disease. These screenings are typically NOT performed at your annual check-up, and insurance companies may not pay for them unless you are symptomatic. Diagnostic versions of these screenings cost thousands of dollars in a hospital. Stroke Scan Plus will be offering them to you for $139 for all 7 com-bined ultrasound screenings (Stroke, AAA, AFIB & or-gans). Insurance is NOT necessary and appointments are limited. Stroke Scan will be available at the the church for you to register on July 27 & 28, or please call 832-437-7355 or toll free 1-866-935-7226 to schedule an ap-pointment today for you or a loved one. The screenings will take place in/at the community room. Prevention is your key to quality health! www.strokescan.com.
