Vision Series 26: Gallup Survey Results #3

We are just about ready to start digging into the raw Gallup data with a consultant from Gallup, someone who has been here before and spoken at our Growing in Faith series a couple of times – some of you may remember her: Stephanie Moore. Her work with Gallup makes her eminently qualified to help us understand the answers you gave in the survey the first week of Lent.

As I’ve written, the good news is that we score very well in spiritual commitment, higher than the average Catholic parish. The challenge for us is that we score lower than average in congregational engagement. This “describes the degree of belonging an individual has in his or her congregation” (A. Winseman, Growing an Engaged Church, p. 67). Overall the statements that measure a person’s sense of belonging were lower, and in some cases significantly lower, than the average Catholic.

No matter how well-formed and informed our faith is about doctrines and moral teaching, what one believe is not nearly as motivating for engagement as feeling that one belongs. This might be counterintuitive: it’s not that believing leads to belonging—it’s that belonging (engagement) that leads to believing (spiritual commitment). Churches and Church professionals have mostly worked under the presumption that if we can get more people to

accept the teachings of the Church in matters of faith and morals, more people will want to be a part of a congregation. Apparently this is not so: it is necessary to increase people’s sense of belonging to the parish (being engaged) that will lead to a growth in people’s spiritual commitment.

Now the challenge for us is, our spiritual commitment numbers are really good! So what’s the disconnect? What will increase peoples’ sense of belonging? Here’s where I as Pastor realize how little I know! This is why bringing Stephanie to the parish to tease out the information and start thinking of the best strategies for increasing engagement is so necessary. I wish I had the answer, but as of this writing we have not yet had the opportunity to break open our survey results. Remember, being “engaged” is not simply a matter of “doing stuff”—what we DO is the result of how we feel about our parish. Many parishes make the mistake of DOING lots of stuff, having lots of activities and meetings and events and seeing what works. According to the best practices of growing parishes and other Christian churches, we must be careful not to panic and do that thing where parishes decide “let’s throw a lot of stuff at the wall and see what sticks.” That’s no way to be intentional, no way to tailor our growth to the specific needs and history of our parish!

We do need to increase engagement, and I hope very soon to start explaining and rolling out new and specific ideas to help our parish grow as engaged, spiritually healthy disciples of the Lord!

St. Hedwig pray for us!
