Epiphany House Blessing According to a very ancient tradition of the Church, there is a blessing of homes that is specific for the

Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. Now house blessings can be done anytime of the year and are usually done by a deacon or priest, but this blessing is part of the collection of home prayers that families can celebrate together, like other blessings we have published in this bulletin over the past few weeks – the blessing of a Nativity Scene or a Christmas tree for example.

The Epiphany blessing comes from the event of the adoration of the Magi (the Three Wise Men: St. Caspar, St. Melchior, and St. Balthasar) who brought gifts to the Baby Jesus. As they acknowledged God present in the world, we, in this prayer of blessing, ask for the intercession of the Magi that we too may find Christ in our homes and BE Christ to others in our homes and from there to the world around us.

The blessing is conducted in this way:

Leader: From the east came the Magi to Bethlehem to adore the Lord; and opening their treasures they offered precious gifts: gold for the great King, incense for the true God, and myrrh in symbol of His burial.

All Pray: Our Father…

Leader: Let us pray. Bless, O Lord God almighty, this home, that in it there may be health, purity, the strength of victory, humility, goodness and mercy, the fulfillment of Your law, the thanksgiving to God the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. And may this blessing remain upon this home and upon all who dwell herein. Through Christ our Lord. All: Amen.

After the prayers of the blessing are recited, the initials of the Magi are inscribed above the front door of the home with chalk. (The initials, C, M, B, are the initials of the Three Wise Men, and the numbers represent the year of blessing.)
