PASTOR’S CORNER The 1st Commandment

In the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) you can read an explanation of the 1st Commandment, “You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve” (Exodus 20:2-5). Paragraphs 2083-2132 contain many examples of sins against the 1st Commandment, actions that go against our duty toward God. With the prevalence of superstition, an inordinate focus on the

supernatural, the growth of occult and “new age” practices, as well as a growing demographic of agnostics and atheists in our society, I believe it’s worth taking this space to mention this in the hope that 1) you learn and agree with the teaching of the Church, or 2) will be converted and repent any sins against this Command.

Sins against faith in God include voluntary doubt, incredulity, heresy, apostasy and schism (2087-9). These are willful acts not to believe what the Church teaches to be revealed by God. Sins against hope include despair and presumption, which is either believing that God will not save or forgive, or that we can save ourselves or that God will forgive us without our asking or repenting (2090-2). Sins against charity include indifference, ingratitude, lukewarmness, acedia (spiritual laziness), and hatred of God; in these ways we neglect our duty to love God above all created things (2093-4). According to the virtue of religion, we are called to act on our belief in God through adoration, prayer, public worship, personal sacrifice, and vows that commit us to vocations in the Church (2095-2103).

What follows these are a series of other actions, and the main reason why I wrote this article so close to Halloween. Catholics are called to practice a pure religion, but some mix a variety of non-Christian, pagan, superstitious, and even

satanic practices into their lives. So let’s review: • superstition: a deviation of religious feeling, using Catholic signs and symbols as though it was “magic” or a mere external observance of Christian practice without faith (2111). • idolatry: there is only one God. To believe in or venerate any other “gods” is polytheism. The worship of pagan deities is demon worship. This also includes placing any created thing above God like money, power, pleasure, or ancestor worship (2112-4). • divination (knowing the future) and magic (power over nature or others): we are called to trust God’s providence, not have an unhealthy curiosity about our future. You must not turn to satan or demons, conjuring up the dead (séances) and necromancy to unveil the future. This includes horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, clairvoyance, using mediums or Ouija (including “Charlie-Charlie). The use of occult powers to have control over others is also a serious sin: the use of magic charms, spiritism, or traditional cures and potions (witchcraft, curanderas, Reiki, etc). These actions are so dangerous! It makes no difference that someone claims “white magic” or offers only beneficial effects. It should go without saying that paying someone to curse another or to wish harm on another, or to make a potion to control the feelings or actions of another are reprehensible (2115-7). • irreligion: tempting God (putting God to the test to prove His power or providence); sacrilege (misusing holy things, people, or places; desecrating the Sacraments, making fun of the holy); and simony (buying or selling spiritual things) (2118-22).

Let us pray for the safety of our children, and the growth of true Christian worship!

PRO-LIFE POSITIONS AND THE DEATH PENALTY

According to Pope John Paul II, “New evangeliza on calls for followers of Christ who are uncondi onally pro-life: who will proclaim, celebrate and serve the Gospel of life in every situa on. A sign of hope is the increasing recogni on that the dignity of human life must never be taken away, even in the case of someone

who has done great evil.” (Mass, St. Louis, MO., 1-27-99.) The same protec on for the sanc ty of human life talked about so o en with abor on extends to the death penalty. All souls, innocent or flawed, have intrinsic value, as we are all created in God’s likeness and are precious in the eyes of our Lord. The death penalty— which will be repealed by Prop 62— destroys the opportunity for redemp on and the ability of God’s mercy to work in the lives of those affected.

For more on forgiveness and the sanc ty of all life, visit www.cacatholic.org.

Sometimes I struggle with feeling like I am a fraud; I mean, who am I to serve God? My adoptive family spent many years telling me how everything was my fault and that they didn't want me and then I spent many years living up to their low expectations. I used to say how I'm "lucky that I didn't end up dead, in jail or in a mental ward", but today I know that God saved me. I'm a sinner. Every day, I'm a sinner and the hard truth is to not only accept this reality,

but the reality of God's great love for me. God loves us, not in spite of our sinfulness, but because of it. His mercy and love are so great that there is nothing I could ever do that could keep me from turning back to Him except for my own stubbornness. Now that doesn't mean that I go out and choose sin because God will love me no matter what- if I know something is a sin then I need to do my best to avoid it. What it means is that no matter how many times I might fall in sin, and even to the same sin, that I can turn back to God and His love and mercy. We are all God's Chosen and Blessed children; may we grow in our understanding of this great love and mercy and come to know where He is calling us to serve Him in the world.

Please contact (562) 296-9007 or [email protected] to discuss ways to connect with the parish community.

St. Vincent de Paul Conference– Lights On Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference has been able to help the poor and the forgotten because of you. One of our programs, Lights On Re-entry provides a safe haven in a RV parked outside of the Central Jail in Santa Ana. Inmates are released at 2 or 3 am with very little, we welcome them in, offer a phone call, chat and wait for the dawn with them. Adults are needed – of all ages to simply welcome. Consider teaming up with a friend (maybe on a weekend night). Love Pope Francis? This is what he is talking about - Compassion in the real world. Please contact Gene Huttner (714) 962-4900 for more information.

"What's Happening at St. Hedwig School This Week?"

Red Ribbon Week St. Hedwig celebrated Red Ribbon Week Oct. 24-28 with many wonderful activities. A special guest, Brent Poppen, presented the amazing assembly “Be a Buddy, Not a Bully!!” He joined the students at recess as a powerful role model. The students also were delighted with a helicopter visit from Long Beach Police Department in honor of Red Ribbon Week and making good choices for their bodies and their souls.

Sacred Heart Retreat Fourth Grade students attended a special retreat at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Retreat Center to learn about vocations. The students enjoyed a special Mass with Fr. Chris.

Harvest Festival: October 31 Students are looking forward to our 3rd Annual festival. Students show off their costumes in a costume parade before playing various games and watching a movie with their friendship partner. Who is going to win Freeze Dance and “Pin the Nose on the Scarecrow”? Happy Halloween!

Earning couldn’t be easier. Thank you for your support and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me, Sharon Hodge at [email protected].

Working with Those Who Have Been Affected by Abortion The Diocesan Office of Pastoral Care for Families in all Stages continues to recruit new companion ministers who serve in the Hope and Healing After Abortion Ministry. This diocesan outreach ministry strives to meet the needs of those whose lives have been affected by abortion. If you feel called to minister with this very special group of people. It is not necessary for abortion to have been your direct experience. What is required is that the volunteer can provide a caring, compassionate, and non-judgmental presence for someone who is suffering and who seeks reconciliation with God and their faith community. We are in special need of those who are bi-lingual, bi-literate and bi-cultural in languages other than English (i.e., Spanish, Vietnamese, Korean, etc.) to meet the needs of all in our faith communities. The sensitivity of this ministry does require some formal training. For questions regarding this ministry, please contact Michael

Donaldson at (714) 282-4203 or [email protected].
