Survey Says!

If you ever watched the gameshow “Family Feud” you know the host always called out “survey says…!” to show the right answers compared to what the contestants said. So, SURVEY SAYS…

Guidance in Giving has given me the results of the feasibility study that was conducted in May and June. 17% of the registered parishioners participated in this survey. Now they say this is a good representative sample for a parish of this size, but I am disappointed that so few parishioners answered the paper survey of filled it out online. 62% approve of the concept of building a new pastoral center; 13% were opposed to it; and 24% were unsure. 24% of “unsure” responses, coupled with a general unwillingness to comment on how much any household might be willing to contribute to this project is a concern. Overall the approval of this project is “soft,” meaning as of now I don’t know if we are ready or interested in moving forward with a capital campaign. I would need to move much of the 24% unsure parishioners into the positive column in order to improve our likelihood or reaching our goal. Guidance in Giving offered an estimate of how much we could collect from a campaign, but it is not enough to build the pastoral center. The difference between the cost of phase 1 & 2 of the project and St. Hedwig’s fundraising capacity is about two million dollars! We need parishioners who are capable of major gifts of

$250,000 + to bridge this gap to have a successful project. Since this parish has not had a campaign of this size for 30 years (since the remodeling of the church), there is no information who in our parish might actually be able to lead a campaign with big donations. Please contact me if you are able to make such a gift, or if you know someone who is capable I will reach out to them! We could reduce the scope of the project or completely alter it and offer a different design, but then this survey would be meaningless—those who responded did so based on the plans that were shown. The architect said that cutting out 20% of the square footage does not equate a 20% drop in the price of the project. So I need to decide if we can make this plan a reality. For now it’s not “back to the drawing board”: I need more information beyond what the survey results show to know if our parish has the capacity to grow in this way. I’m planning to speak at all the Masses one weekend soon to present more information and to ask for your help. I’m reminded of Jesus’ parable on stewardship: Which of you, wishing to construct a tower, does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise after laying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work, the onlookers should laugh at him and say, “this one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.” (Luke 14:28-30) I believe we need more space to grow our parish and ministries. Do we have the resources? That depends on whether you also believe we need to build and are willing to count the cost.

Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible

Save the dates: On Fridays-- July 7th, July 14th and July 21st from 7:00-9:00 PM in Quinn Hall, we will have a DVD presentation of this new series from Ascension Press. The presenter for this program is Jeff Cavins, a noted Catholic Biblical scholar. This is a perfect opportunity for both those with no biblical knowledge and for

those who might be more familiar with the pages of Scripture to see the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, laid out in an enlightening and understandable format. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple. It helps us uncover the story woven throughout Scripture so we can get the 'big picture'. There is no cost in attending these presentations. Everyone is welcome! For questions or more information please call Carol Meckler at (562) 430-3266 or email: [email protected] or call Peggy McEachen at (562) 431-6317 or email: [email protected].

What’s Happening at Saint Hedwig School?

WELCOME TO FR. U. BALASHOWRY “1000 Catholic journalists for Christian presence in media, employment and social change in India”

Amruthavani (“sweet immortal voice”) is a regional organization under the aegis of Telugu Catholic Bishop’s Conference comprising of 13 dioceses with over 2 million Catholic population. Amruthavani primarily focuses on training people in the field of communication for evangelization, employment and social change.

India, the second largest country in the world with the population of 1.2 billion people is still rooted in social evils such as gender inequality and unemployment.

According to UNICEF, 50 million female babies were aborted in India in the last ten years by way of selective gender elimination. Today there are only 914 females for every 1000 males in India. Since the vast majority of Indians are Hindus they believe that only a boy will save them from Hell. There is also the common notion that the boy is the bread winner. In addition to this, if a girl has to be married they have to give a huge dowry. Every hour there is a dowry death in India. Sad to say, as per recent stats, that 9000 young brides are burnt alive every

year by husbands and mothers-in-law. There is also an evil practice of female infanticide - that is killing girl babies after birth.

1600 people die daily due to diarrhea. This is simply because 100 million in India do not have safe drinking water. 750 millions do not have toilets which is a big health hazard.

In order to address these issues Amruthavani Communication Center is training Catholic graduates as journalists for mainstream media. These journalists, formed with moral conscience, in turn bring about education and awareness. We plan on training 160 in batches of 40 this year. The training cost per student is $200. This makes them employable and earn about $300 a month. We have trained 460 Catholic youth as journalists and most of them are already employed and bringing about social change.

The second way you can help us to change the situation for female babies is to sponsor a half-hour television program. We want to produce programs for public awareness and education on these social evils and unhealthy cultural practices. Each half hour TV episode costs $200.

Fr. U. Balashowry will speak at all the masses on the weekend of July 8-9.

2017 PASTORAL SERVICES APPEAL Fr. Dave’s Bio

I was born in Lakewood, California, on July 24, 1959. My family is originally from Iowa but moved to California a couple years before I was born. We belonged to St. Columban’s Parish in Garden Grove where I attended grade school through 2nd grade.

Later we moved to St. Irenaeus Parish in Cypress where I completed elementary school through 8th grade. I attended Mater Dei High School and graduated in 1977. From there I entered St. John’s Seminary College for four years, majored in Philosophy, graduated with a BA in 1981, and then entered the Major Seminary and graduated with a Masters of Divinity. I was ordained in 1985.

I actually credit my vocation to the fine Presentation Sisters and parish priests serving throughout my years at St. Irenaeus. I had a particularly patient 5th grade religion teacher named Sr. Kathleen, who answered all my persistent questions with great wisdom, much to the annoyance of my classmates. She helped me see the reasonableness of religious faith in a way that no one ever had before which started me down the road of questioning that eventually led me to a religious vocation. I have always seen theology as “Faith seeking understanding” and with the help of the Holy Spirit, I have found myself in a life trying to help others In the same pursuit.

After ordination, I was assigned to St. Norbert’s Parish in Orange for four years as a Parochial Vicar, then moved to Santiago de Compostela in Lake Forest for two years. After some struggles with my health I was assigned to St. Timothy’s in Laguna Niguel for six years as a Parochial Vicar. Then I was sent to St. Martin de Porres in Yorba Linda where I served as a Vicar for four years. I left there in 2001 to become the Pastor of Santiago de Compostela in Lake Forest for twelve years, finishing my term of office in June of 2013. Next, I found myself at St. Edward the Confessor in Dana Point in the role of Senior Priest/Parochial Vicar. That assignment concludes July 1st, joining the Parish Community of St. Hedwig’s in Los Alamitos.

As you can see, I have had many changes of assignment and lots of transitions like this; but one never gets used to pulling up stakes and moving on after making a home in the lives of parishioners and communities you grow to love. Nevertheless, the call to serve God by serving His people is a restless one that keeps one moving, changing and learning for a lifetime. If God continues to travel with me, the journey will never be too long or too difficult, but it will never be boring either. I look forward to all that God has yet to teach me on my journey. Yours in Christ, Fr. David Gruver Senior Priest
