REFLECTION TODAY’S READINGS:

SUNDAY, April 22

Acts 4:8-12

1 John 3:1-2

John 10:11-18

REFLECTION

Today's Gospel occurs in the middle of Jesus' ministry. At first, Jesus' words seem to be about the value of self-sacrifice in a leader. "I am the Good Shepherd ? I will lay down my life for the sheep." The Apostles likely would have accepted these words easily enough. But then comes something more strange. "I lay down my life in order to take it up again ? I have power to lay it down and power to take it up again." Only later, when Jesus opened the Scriptures to them after his resurrection, would the Apostles understand his words. Only then would they understand why such an act was necessary for the salvation of the world. Even now, we may struggle with the necessity of Holy Week. How often do we hear complaints against the silence of God, as if He is the "hired man" who "runs away" from suffering? Jesus' life, death, and resurrection is our redemption in fact. God himself bears the full weight of sin's consequences. The Paschal Mystery is also a sign that happens in full view of the human experience. We have seen Jesus lay down his life. We have seen him accompany others. "I know mine and mine know me." We have seen him reach those outside the traditional flock, "sheep not of this fold." Jesus is the Good Shepherd, not only in Scripture but in our daily lives. While we can't experience physically walking alongside him like the Apostles did, the grace of our redemption continues through the Church. We are shepherded by the sacraments, by faith formation, by good mentors. At the same time, we are not only the sheep. In imitating Jesus, we, too, are invited to lay down our lives for others. We can be the hands, feet, and shepherd's crook of Christ. –LPI

: Do you know someone who needs to have communion brought to them? What joy might be felt to have a weekly Communion visit from fellow parishioners who serve so lovingly and faithfully? Please consider giving 1-1 ½ hours every 5 weeks. You DO NOT have to be a Eucharistic Minister at Mass to volunteer in this ministry. Call Anita McCabe, 864-4712, to see how we may be able to help keep those who have been part of us, stay part of us.

For the Beauty of the Earth

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,

For the love which from our birth, over and around us lies.

Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the beauty of each hour, of the day and of the night,

Hill and vale, and tree and flower, sun and moon and stars of night.

Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise.

For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child,

Friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild.

Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise.

For each perfect gift of Thine, to our race so freely given,

Graces human and divine, flowers of earth and buds of heaven.

Lord of all, to Thee we raise, this our hymn of grateful praise.

CAN YOU HELP US???

We need teams of people to help keep our environment looking its respectful best. Do you belong to a garden club? Are you looking to volunteer your husband for something to do? Maybe you love plants and gardening but don’t have the room for themA well, please read on.

The holy seasons of Christmas and Easter were especially challenging as there were more plants/flowers to attend to

and volunteers were away or with their families. If you can offer approximately 2 hours every 3-4 weeks to join our volunteer team, many hands make light work and our plants will look very appreciative!

There will be a short organizational meeting to get everybody acclimated to “what, how, and when.”

Just call or email Anita for details.

EARTH DAY: APRIL 22, 2018

POPE FRANCIS ON TWITTER Pope Francis @Pontifex - Apr 12

“Saints are distinguished by a spirit of prayer and a need for communion with God. There is no holiness without prayer.”

CARE FOR CREATION Thought: There are at least four areas where Catholic social teaching can make a contribution to our thinking about the structure of American agriculture, or what we should look for in a just agricultural system. They are: the right to food, the protection of creation, the support of rural communities, and respect for justice.

Actions: 1. Purchase local food from a local farmer. The

Rural Virginia Market is returning to St. Edward!Every Tuesday beginning in May, your order will be delivered to St. Edward for you to pick up near the picnic pavilion between 3:30pm and 5:00pm. Order only what you want from their online farm store. Everything from the Byrd Farm is organic! Veggies, strawberries, eggs, pastured chicken and more! Fruit, honey, beef and more available from other local producers and growers! Sign up now so you are ready to order in May! Go to www.ruralvirginamarket.com (pick-up code SECCC.)

2. Participate in a parish work day at Shalom Farms. Our next work day is Saturday, June 16, 9am to noon. Sign up at Community Weekend in May. Shalom Farms believes everyone should have good food-- food that is good for our bodies, good for the environment, and good for our communities. However, thousands in Richmond lack access to healthy food. Many people also lack the tools and resources to cook it, eat it, and share it. Through sustainable agriculture and hands-on experiences, Shalom Farms works with communities to ensure access to healthy food, and the support to lead healthy lives.

3. Read For I Was Hungry and You Gave Me Food: Catholic Reflections on Food, Farmers, and Farmworkers. This document was developed by the Committee on Domestic Policy of the USCCB. It was approved by the full body of bishops at its November 2003 General Meeting and can be found at www.usccb.org.

BENEDICTINE BASKETBALL CAMP OFF TO CAMP!! There are some boys who will

never get the chance to go to camp.unless we make it happen! St. Edward parish wants to send 6 or more boys from Westover Hills Elementary School to Benedictine Basketball Camp for a week in June. The cost is $190/week for each boy. Any amount you can contribute will be so appreciated. For more information, please contact Alicia Meyer at [email protected] - or Jennifer (see above.) Please send a check to St. Edward Church (marked WHES Basketball Camp) through the collection basket or the mail. Thank you so much!

OTHER NEWS AND INFORMATION

St. Edward Date Night 2.0 Deacon Kevin and Adria Hogan

Do you want some intimacy and spiritual growth in your relationship? Be part of the team that brings back the highly successful Date Night program to St. Ed’s once a month on Saturday evenings after Mass starting in the Fall of 2018. Hospitality- share a pot luck dinner and grow community of other like-minded couples. Program- focus on any number of aspects of healthy relationships and sacramental marriages. It involves a short video and questions for each couple to privately consider based on the video.

We have had a generous response from families who want to bring back Date Night. We have a Communications Couple, a Hospitality Couple, Child Care Coordinator, and a Couple to assist with Clean Up. Therefore, St. Edward Date Night 2.0 2018 is moving forward!

We have selected the program “Beloved”Finding Happiness in Marriage, from Augustine Institute, https://www.augustineinstitute.org/formed/beloved/#. Topics will include: Christ at the Center, A Deeper Unity, Conflict and Communication, Building a Thriving Marriage, Protecting the Bond, and Couple Prayer and Spiritual Intimacy.

Here are the dates on the calendar for St. Edward Date Night 2.0; September 15, October 20, November 17, January 5, February 2, and March 2. There will be a couple workbook we will order for you when you register at a cost of approxi-mately $20 per couple.

To register now, drop an email to Deacon Kevin at the address below.

A healthy and vital church community provides an environment for couples to deepen their relationship. Pope Francis said while he was here in the U.S. for the World Meeting of Families in 2015, “Waste time with your children”. We need to waste more time with our spouses so we are better equipped to be models of Christian Love in our homes, the Domestic Church, for our children. The best gift you can give your children is to love your spouse.

Have a conversation with your spouse and pray about becoming a part of the “Date Night Team @ St. Ed’s”.

Questions, contact Deacon Kevin: khogan@richmonddiocese.
