St Colmcilles Community School Adult Education Programme Digital Photography Digital Photography (Introduction to DSLR) Day and Time: Wednesday 7:30-9:30pm Duration: 10 weeks Price: €110 Tutor: Paul Holmes Course Description This ten-week course is designed for absolute beginners and those who have little knowledge of focus, exposure and editing. Through a series of guided exercises students will learn the basics of handling their digital camera, using basic camera functions (shutter speed, aperture controls) photo composition, working with time and lighting conditions, transferring and storing digital files, editing common mistakes and printing the final image. The emphasis of the course is on gaining a working knowledge of the techniques and technology involved in producing good quality, everyday photographs. Prior experience in using computers is recommended, though not essential. Student should bring their digital camera to the first class. Week 1: Camera settings. Week 2: Understanding Exposure, Aperture, Shutter speed and iso. Week 3: Focusing and depth of field. Week 4: Looking at different types of lenses. Week 5: Composition and framing your subject. Week 6: Uploading your images to a computer. Week 7: Processing, an introduction to photo editing. Week 8-10: Practical shooting sessions outside. Digital Photography

Digital Photography (Advanced) Day and Time: Tuesday 7:30-9:30pm Duration: 10 weeks Price: €110 Tutor: Peter Salisbury Course Description This course is designed for those who already have an understanding of the basics of digital photography, but want to refine their skills and technical know-how. The course will involve a series of practical assignments with follow up editing instruction using image editing software. The emphasis of the course is on using digital technology to improve upon or re-invent the photographic image. An introduction to a variety of contemporary digital photographers will also be provided.

A digital SLR camera is recommended, but not essential. Prior experience in using a digital camera and a computer are necessary. If you don’t already have a basic knowledge of how to use the manual functions on your camera, then you should be doing the Beginners class. Course Outline (sample, subject to change) Week 1: The Basics: Revisited Exposure, ISO & White Balance; Rule of Thirds & The Elements of Design

Week 2: Advanced Exposure Learning more about your light meter and exposure controls

Week 3: Raw Shooting Gaining more editing power through Raw format

Week 4: Image Editing Correcting Tone & Colour: Ensuring that white, black and overall contrast is correct, and repairing, improving and changing colour

Week 5: Photographing People Camera features and techniques for photographing people

Week 6: Photographing Buildings Camera features and techniques for photographing buildings

Week 7: Photographing Landscapes Camera features and techniques for photographing landscapes

Week 8: Digital Monochrome Learning the art of digital black & white photography

Week 9: Output Sharing your images with family and friends

Week 10: Putting it all Together Group exhibition and presentation
