Prayer for Today: Lord Jesus, You alone know our hearts, what we feel, what we want, what we need. You know our prayer before we speak it. Hear us, O Lord, and have pity on us. We love You, we adore You, we glorify You. Let Your face shine upon us and fill us with Your

light so that we can be a beacon to others. Transform us, Lord, to become more like You. Praise You, Jesus!

As many of you know, our Real Presence Radio signal has been gone for the past six months. The radio transmitter was one thing that was lost in the tragic fire that Blaine and Sandy Mack experienced last February.

The RPR Network is ready to move ahead with the transmitter replacement in Harvey to bring the radio signal back to our area. The new 250 watt transmitter (twice the size of the previous transmitter) will have an estimated broadcast radius of 30 miles. It will cost the network $10,000 for this installation. They are reaching out to us to help offset this cost.

To help determine the extent to which people in the area listened to RPR we circulated a brief survey after mass on July 26th. Thank you to those who responded to the survey. Approximately 1/3 of the households in our parishes responded. Of those who responded 40% said they did listen to RPR on an occasional or regular basis.

Next weekend you will be given information on how you can help bring Real Presence Radio back to our community. The RPR Network is a 100% listener supported Catholic radio apostolate.

On a side note, 70% of those who responded to the survey indicated that they watch EWTN television. Real Presence Radio is an affiliate of the EWTN television network. Catholic radio and television are two tremendous tools in sharing the truth of our Catholic faith to others.

20th Sunday of the Year

Last week we heard the familiar story of Jesus walking on the water. In the darkness of night, when the boat was being tossed about by the wind, the disciples thought they were seeing a ghost. Peter called out, “Lord, if it is you command me to come to you on the water”

(Matthew 14:28) With faith he stepped out of the boat to walk towards Jesus but when his faith faltered he began to sink and cried out “Lord, save me”(14:30).

This is an interesting contrast to today’s story of the encounter with the Canaanite woman. Her first words to Jesus, “ Have pity on me, Lord, Son of David” (Mt 15:22) were very much like Peter’s last words, “Lord, save me.” In these words both were acknowledging a faith in Jesus as the Lord and Savior. But their faith appears to be quite different. Peter, in his wavering faith, began to sink into the water and cried out for help. This woman, on the other hand, had a persistent unwavering faith. She was not going to accept the answer “no!”.

Another contrast is found in the persons themselves. Peter, as a Jewish man, was in the circle of the elite. He was a man from the “chosen race.” She was a woman and in ancient Palestine women were never allowed to speak to men in public. She was a Gentile and considered an outsider to the faithful Jews of that day. Furthermore, as a Canaanite, she would have been seen as an enemy, for the animosity between the Jews and Canaanites went back hundreds of years.

This gives us opportunity then to look at our Church’s teaching on salvation. First of all, as the scriptures teach us, we recognize that the Savior of the world was to come from the Jews, the first be called God’s chosen people. The scriptures teach us also that he was to be born of the house of David, hence the title Son of David. But while the Jews were expecting a Messiah that would save only them, our Catholic faith has always maintained the belief that Christ came to save all people.

During his earthly ministry Christ saw his first responsibility was to help bring healing to the people of Israel. He is quite clear in his teachings to his disciples that he came “for the lost sheep of the house of Israel”(Mt 15:24). Offering healing graces to a Gentile was something Jesus rarely did in his public ministry. For this reason, he did not respond immediately to the request of the Canaanite woman, for she was not of the house of Israel. In testing her faith in him, she persisted in her unwavering conviction that he could heal her daughter. And so, because of her faith, he granted her request.

At the end of his earthly ministry Jesus then clearly extends his grace and salva-tion to the entire world. Before his Ascension, when the eleven were gathered on the mountaintop, Jesus commanded them to go out to ALL the nations, bap-tizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (cf Mt 28:19). Since the beginning the Church’s first priority has been to include all people. In fact that is how we took the name Catholic, which derives from the Greek word meaning “universal.”

It is important to repeat that Christ came to save all people; not just Jews, not just Catholics, not just Lutherans, Methodists and Presbyterians. Christ came to save all people. This means we need to be aware of the attitude with which we treat others who are different than us.

Stewardship Moment August 16, 2020 - 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time

“For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable.” - Romans 11:29

God has a special mission in mind for each of us. He has given us the gifts we need to accomplish that mission. We are called to be good stewards by using those gifts to do the work that He has planned for each of us. If we deny our gifts or fail to use them as God calls us to use them, then some part of His work will be left undone.

Do we accept Christians of other denominations as brothers and sisters in Christ, or do we tend to feel we are better than them? Do we feel that we are right and they are wrong?

What about the Jews? Do we see them as the faithless people who rejected and killed Jesus? Do we hold on to those age-old prejudices that brought about the horror of the holocaust? Or do we see them as the Church truly teaches -- our ancestors in faith and the first to be called the people of God?

What are our attitudes towards the people of Islam? Do we see all Muslims as radical fundamentalist terrorists out to destroy our way of life? Or do we recognize most of them as a people who also are striving for holiness and oneness with God?

What about the poor, the unemployed, the homeless? Do we see them as lazy or worthless? Do we seem them as a burden to our society and way of life? And what about the wealthy? Do we view them as greedy and self-centered?

What about people of different races? Do we harbor attitudes of prejudice against Native Americans or African-Americans? Do we treat people with different skin color differently, showing favoritism to people of our own race?

And then what about people of our own parish? Do we tend to avoid certain people because they think differently than us or act differently than us? In our families do we harbor grudges when people say or do things that we don't agree with?

Because of the reality of sin there will always be divisions in our world, and in and amongst our churches. Even so, we need to work to end the divisions by shaping our own attitudes towards others. As Christians we need to respect the differences of our various different congregations. At the same time, as Catholics, we need to celebrate the richness and fullness of faith which we have been given. While working to end the divisions, we must never compromise the truth that has been passed down to us through the centuries.

There is no greater celebration of faith, and source of grace in this world, than that which we celebrate and receive in the Eucharist. At the Last Supper, when Jesus instituted the Holy Eucharist he had a special prayer that we find in the 17th Chapter of John’s Gospel. In the middle of this prayer the Lord prays “that they may be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you” (John 17:21).

This week pray for unity within our Church; for the reunification of Christian denominations; for unity and peace in our country and in our world. Let the prayer of Jesus be our prayer today, and all days, until the end of time.
