Fifth Sunday of Ordinary Time (A) 5th February 2017

We sometimes describe a good

person as being “salt of the

earth”, using a phrase from

Jesus’ words in the Sermon on

the Mount.

We are most used to be told

that, for the sake of our health,

we need to reduce the amount

of salt that we consume. Too

much salt in our diet is bad for

us.

But for the ancient world, salt was vital. As well as

adding a pleasant taste to food, they used it to preserve

food from spoiling.

So when Jesus tells his disciples that they are “salt of the

earth”, he is telling them not only that they have an

essential role to play in improving the quality of people’s

life (the “flavour” of life in the world) but also that they

have a responsibility to purify the world and protect it

from the corruption and decay of sin.

Every Christian shares in this call to be salt to earth.

Confirmation Preparation for Adults

The sacrament of Confirmation

strengthens and perfects the

graces given to us at our

Baptism.

During Lent, we will offer a

programme of preparation for baptised

Catholic adults who wish to receive the

sacrament of Confirmation.

If you have not been confirmed, please

complete one of the application forms

available at the back of the church and

return it to the parish office.

Cold Weather

We are doing our best to keep the church

warm during the cold weather. This is

difficult, especially on very cold days,

because the church building is such a large

space.

Please help us to conserve

heat by ensuring that you

keep the doors of the church

(including the side door and

the double doors inside the

building) closed. When these are left open,

heat escapes very quickly and a draft is

created which leaves people feeling even

colder!

The main doors of the church will be

propped open just before the end of each

Sunday Mass to allow people to leave

easily. At all other times, please close

doors behind you.

Parish Open House

If you need to see a priest to make an

initial enquiry about a baptism or

wedding, to seek a supplementary

reference for a school application or for

any other brief enquiry, please drop in

without an appointment during the Parish

Open House. The next Open House takes

place in the presbytery on Friday 10th

February from 6pm to 7.30pm.

Bible Study Group: Letters of St Paul

Our Bible study group meets on

Thursdays at 1.30pm in the presbytery

meeting room. All are welcome to attend.

A Day with Jesus The parish sets aside the second Saturday

of each month for a day of recollection. The

next one will be on Saturday 11th

February. The day begins at 9.15am with

Morning Prayer, Eucharistic Adoration,

devotions and a spiritual talk. Confessions

are available during this time. Mass is

celebrated at 11am followed by an

opportunity for those who are sick to

receive the sacrament of anointing and for

individuals to come forward to be prayed

over by a priest. All are welcome to take

part in the day.

Bereavement Support Meeting

We are organising an informal and

friendly gathering open to all who have

recently experienced bereavement and

loss. The first gathering is on Saturday

11th February at 3pm in the presbytery.

Contact the Parish Office for more details.

Retreat for Children & Young People

The Parish is organising a day of retreat for

our children and young people (aged from

5-16 years) on Saturday 18th February

from 10am to 4pm. The retreat will be

conducted by SEHION UK and will have a

range of activities for the different age

groups. We encourage parents to keep this

date free so that their children can

participate. A flyer with further details is

available in the church porch or on the

parish website.

Live Irish Gig

There will be a Live Irish Gig featuring

Eugene Doonan in the main hall on Friday

10th February from 8.30pm–11.30pm.

Doors open at 7.00pm.

We are holding a parish quiz in aid of the

church building fund on Friday 17th

February. £5 to take part in the quiz or £10

with a curry supper. To order food, please

call Tommy on 07949 332 183
