EXPOSITION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT FOR THE CLOSING OF THE YEAR OF FAITH

Bishop Murphy has asked that we close the Year of Faith with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament throughout the Diocese. We have decided to share this throughout our deanery. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed in the following parishes from 12 noon till 8pm: Sunday, November 24: St. Hyacinth, Glen Head; Monday November 25th:St. Dominic, Oyster Bay; Tuesday November 26th: St. Paul the Apostle, Brookville (see page 6). We have been assigned the time slot on Tuesday, November 26th from 5:30pm till 8pm at St. Paul the Apostle in Brookville. Benediction will be celebrated with all the parishes at 8pm on Tuesday November 26th. I am asking people to sign up in the back of Church this weekend so that there is always someone present before our Eucharistic Lord. I will give to each group a list of what prayers should be said throughout the time allotted to us. Each parish will follow the same guideline. As per the wish of the Bishop, each parish will also celebrate Benediction on Wednesday, November 27th at 12 noon in their own Churches. This Sunday, the Solemnity of Christ the King, marks the last Sunday in Ordinary Time. Next Sunday begins our Advent Season. These last few weeks the readings have focused on the end of time. Our readings reminded us that each of us will one day have to stand before God and give an account of our lives. This last Sunday before Advent and the waiting for the Birth of the Lord has us at the Crucifixion. Before we even start at the beginning, we are brought to the last days of our Lord. If you think about it, it is truly right and fitting. The whole reason Jesus came into the world was to purchase our lives by His own blood. He came that He may be the perfect sacrifice to the Father. The point of our lives should be to hear the words that Jesus spoke to the repentant thief..."This day you will be with me in paradise." For that to be a reality for us it takes a commitment to Jesus and an embracing of His message of hope and love. That is lived out by our acknowledging Jesus as our King. We need to see this not simply in the terms of a secular king, but it needs to go deeper. The King Jesus has to rule not just our lives, but more importantly our hearts. He should be a king we follow not because, like in a secular king, we fear the repercussion, but rather we have fallen in love with this king. In falling in love we see His law as the perfect way not only for eternal life but also for peace and happiness in this life. For Jesus to truly be our king we need to spend our days seeking His message and then putting it into action in our lives. As you know, that message is most perfectly presented in the Sacred Scriptures. Each Thursday at 7:30pm in the Parish Center we have a group that meets to study the Scriptures. It might be something to consider...you don't have to have been going to attend. Everyone is welcome at any time!. We also see the kingship of Jesus lived out in the teaching of the Church. It is important to note that in our Gospel today, even as Jesus was dying on the Cross he continued to minister to those in need. This is the nature of the King we adore. Each Sunday we come to worship our King. We come to praise our God and to worship the Name of Jesus. The Eucharist is a reminder that our King wants to be part of our lives and to reveal Himself to us. We gather in the context of Sacramental Ritual. Through words, songs, posture and signs we acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus. All our actions must point to the Kingship of Jesus. The high point moment of the Liturgy is the consecration. This act is where the priest calls down the Holy Spirit onto the gifts of bread and wine and they are changed and transformed into the real and true Body and Blood of Jesus. It is the most solemn and profound part of the entire Liturgy. In a sense is the moment that the rest of the Liturgy leads us to. I would ask that during the consecration we are conscious of keeping all movement to only that which is absolutely necessary. It is important that we focus all our attention on the actions of the altar and are aware that the power of the Holy Spirit is truly at work. One of the customs of the Mass is the ringing of bells when the priest holds up the consecrated Host and the Precious Blood. This "call" is a reminder for us to gaze and worship the presence of Jesus under the sacramental forms. I invite all to the Thanksgiving Mass at 9 am in the Church. Please note that there will NOT be an 8 am Mass Thanksgiving Morning. You are invited and encouraged to bring food from your Thanksgiving table (bread, wine, etc) to be blessed at Mass.
