Prayer before mass Come, Holy Spirit, quiet my heart and my head, as I gather
with my family, friends and neighbors to celebrate Mass. Quiet the thoughts and distractions that will keep me from worship. Open my mouth in prayer and song. Open my ears to hear
God’s word. Open my eyes to the mystery of the Eucharist. Open my heart to receive Jesus with love. May I go forth strengthened to take the Mass into my life this week. In a special way, we pray for our twinning parish, St. Mary’s in
Uxbridge. Amen.
Amen.

Lessons in Stained Glass and Stone The cross on the facade of the church displays the symbols of the four Gospels. Christian tradition has associated the Gospels
with the "four living creatures" found in the books of the Prophet Ezekiel and Revelation. Saint Irenaeus explained the meaning of these symbols. The divine man represents the Gospel of Matthew, because Matthew writes about the humble
humanity of Jesus who is both the Son of God and the Son of Mary. The lion represents the Gospel of Mark, who begins his Gospel with the words of the prophet Isaiah: "a voice crying out in the wilderness," like the roar of the lion. The ox
represents the Gospel of Luke, because Luke writes about the priestly character of Jesus and the ox was used for the sacrifice of the temple. We may also think about the words of the father when his prodigal son returns from his life of dissipation:
"Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let us eat and celebrate, because my son was dead and has come back to life, he was lost and now is found." The soaring eagle represents the Gospel of John, which flies to high theology about Jesus: "In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God ... " The cross has the letters "IC XC NIKA" in the center as well. Those letters represent the Greek phrase, "Jesus Christ conquers!"

"I ask everyone to look more deeply at man, whom Christ has saved in the mystery of his love, and at the human being's unceasing search for truth and meaning. Different philosophical systems have lured people into believing that they are their own absolute master, able to decide their own destiny and future in complete autonomy, trusting only in themselves and their own powers. But this can never be the grandeur of the human being, who can find fulfillment only in choosing to enter the truth, to make a home under the shade of Wisdom and dwell there. Only within this horizon of truth will people understand their freedom in its fullness and their call to know and love God as the supreme realization of their true self." - Saint John Paul II, Fides et Ratio 107.
