A St Augustine’s Church Scaynes Hill Sunday 19th April 2020 Whilst we are very sadly in a period of tme where we are unable to worship together we hope that this newsleter helps you feel encouraged and supported by our Church. Welcome Although we were very disappointed not to be able to join together as a fellowship for our Easter Sunday service, we hope that you enjoyed our celebration and that you were able to get outside in the garden or for a walk at some point over the weekend and feel the warmth of the Easter sun. We will resume our normal (well as normal as it can be these circumstances!) pattern of online services and you can find the liturgy included in this newsletter. Do join us at 10.00 am on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCmi2pmpHEJWfStDhCecyo8g (or by doing a YouTube search for St Augustne’s Scaynes Hill). A very big thank you to Jean, the Bewick Family, Tim and Helen who have all worked so hard to contribute to this week’s service and to Gaynor as well as the sermon has also prepared some wonderful refectons which you will fnd on pages on 5 and 16. Many thanks as well to Emily who is working very hard at staying in touch with all our young people. They have been absolutely de- lighted to receive “proper” post from her each week and really appreciate her staying in contact. We have a new competton running this week which requires use of the “grey mater” - more in- formaton on pages 2 and 4. We would love to receive as many entries as possible to keep us all smiling! The laptop scheme for those who have not previously been able to access online services is now up and running and we were very pleased that Doris and Jenny B were able to join us last week- end. If you know of anyone who isn’t online but would like to view our services (it is very simple - just one push of an on/of buton and Keith does the rest) do let me know and Keith will look into it for you. Just to re-iterate, we feel the best way forward is for all ideas for contributons to services to be sent to Lucy at least ten days in advance of the service. Please could you upload contributons (landscape style) by the Wednesday prior to the service so that Thomas has plenty of tme to pull it all together. I would be very grateful if any informaton that you would like to send out to the congregaton could be sent to me by Sunday evening for the mid-week bulletn and Wednesday evening for the weekend newsleter please. If we can help in any other way - anything big or small - please don’t hesitate to contact one of us. All telephone numbers and contact details can be found on the back page. With love and blessings

Covid-19 – Advice from

Diocese of Chichester

The Diocese of Chichester with Together in Sussex are launching Hearing You, a new pastoral phone line to enable the people of Sussex to feel connected and supported. It is a phone line that will provide pastoral sup-port and a listening ear to the recently bereaved and people directly affected by the COVID-19 outbreak. It will be staffed by volunteers who are trained in pastoral care and listening skills: clergy and licensed lay ministers:

All volunteer/listeners will: have an active DBS and have completed safeguarding train-ing with the Diocese of Chich-ester;

be able to point callers to their parish clergy;

direct callers to other organi-sations offering specialist sup-port if appropriate;

offer to pray for the caller or for their concerns.,

NB: This is not a substitute for

the emergency services (111 or 999) or a counsel-ling service. It is a human, Christian response to any-one who turns to the Church in this time of need.

Hospital chaplains within the diocese will also be able to di-rect people to the service. The phone lines will be open to any-one living in Sussex whether they currently attend a church or not. The service will initially run from today to the end of May, Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 7.00pm. The Hearing You number is: 01273 425047 For details about volunteering, please contact: Luci Fievet on 0 1 2 7 3 4 2 1 0 2 1 o r email [email protected]

Caption Competition

Our competition this week is to add a caption to a photo.

You will find two photos from a well-known programme that you may recognise on Page 4! We thought it would be fun if you could think of a caption to add to one or both of these photos.

You can either add your caption to the photo and send it back to me or just email me your caption saying whether it goes with pic-ture 1 (top) or Picture 2 (bottom) and I will add the cap-tion/s for you. If you would like a bigger or electronic version, you will find them in the midweek bulletin or I can send them to you. The closing date for this competition will be Thursday 23rd April at midday. Results will be announced in the newsletter for that weekend. As last week, there will be a small prize for the winning entry. So get your “thinking caps” on and those “ creative juices” flowing!!

Further Covid-19 Advice

Diocese of Chichester

We are launching a simple state-ment for people to take into hospital with them. Some peo-ple will need it printed by a friend, neighbour or parish priest. We advise that every household should have one of these statements ready for use. This statement will explicitly declare a person’s Christian faith, and request access to a Church of England a chaplain while in hospital. A template for this statement is available on the Diocesan website:

Please let me know if you dion’t have access to a printer and I will print one off for you.

I have found something which I thought would be fun to share with you. As part of the Roots at Home Bible study is a hug tem-plate! I thought what a great idea as so many of us would love to be able to hug someone we love at the moment and we can’t. So here’s my idea - print off the hug template and decorate the page and then send it to someone who you would like to be able to hug.

https://www.rootsontheweb.com/media/20219/peace_arms.pdf

I am very happy to print some and send them out to you if you haven’t got a printer.

The Bible study is on Jesus ap-pearing to his disciples. It might be too young or to old for your families but you could pick and choose which bits you use.:

Thought for the Day

It’s hard to see, but the verse on the plaque is from the King James version of Psalm 66…

All the earth worships you; they sing praises to you; sing praises to your name.’

Although we can’t get out to view such splendour at the moment, it struck me that we should not forget about it…the natural world around us continues…

probably for the better without mankind polluting, buying and selling, manufac-turing.

The Grand Canyon is an amazing place to visit, and you really do get a feeling of the time and processes that it has taken to carve it out of the earth. Ask Lucy

sometime about her river rafting/canoeing experience down it!

It is easy there to feel the power of God’s creative spirit…but it is also curiously humbling. You become very aware of how small you are – how insignificant in the

face of such scale of grandeur.

But, the Bible also reminds us that we are not insignificant in God’s eyes. We are as important to Him as the entire earth; as great as the Grand Canyon or

the oceans.

For the mountains may depart and the hills be removed, but my steadfast love shall not depart from you,

and my covenant of peace shall not be removed, says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

Common Worship Morning Prayer

Easter 2 19th April 2020 - 10.00am

Welcome

Reverend Jean Sedgley

Hymn 1: Now thank we all our God - 405

Now thank we all our God, with heart and hands and voices, Who wondrous things has done, in Whom this world rejoices; Who from our mothers’ arms has blessed us on our way

With countless gifts of love, and still is ours today.

O may this bounteous God through all our life be near us, With ever joyful hearts and blessèd peace to cheer us; And keep us in His grace, and guide us when perplexed; And free us from all ills, in this world and the next!

All praise and thanks to God the Father now be given; The Son and Him Who reigns with Them in highest Heaven; The one eternal God, Whom earth and Heaven adore; For thus it was, is now, and shall be evermore.

Alleluia, Christ is risen! All He is risen indeed, Alleluia!

Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. All He has given us new life and hope by raising Jesus from the dead.

Page 7: St Augustine’s ChurchWe will resume our normal (well as normal as it can be these circumstances!) pattern of online ... creative juices” flowing!! Helpful Links from Lucy James,

We sit or kneel for the following prayer:

All Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts

by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Forgiveness & reconciliation

The grace of God has dawned upon the world with healing for all. Let us come to him, in sorrow for our sins, seeking healing and salvation.

All Lord our God, In our sin we have avoided your call. Our love for you is like a morning cloud

Like the dew that goes away early. Have mercy on us; Deliver us from judgement; Bind up our wounds and revive us; In Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

The president declares God’s forgiveness

Almighty God, who in Jesus Christ has given us

a Kingdom that cannot be destroyed, forgive us our sins, open our eyes to God’s truth, strengthen us to do God’s will, and give us the joy of His kingdom, through Jesus Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Sing: Celebrating God’s forgiveness

All Glory be to God in heaven, Peace to those who love him well; On the earth let all his people

Speak his grace, his wonders tell. Lord, we praise you for your glory, Mighty Father, Heaven’s King; Hear our joyful adoration

And accept the thanks we bring.

Only Son of God the Father, Lamb who takes our sin away, Now with him in triumph seated - For your mercy, Lord we pray. Jesus Christ, most high and holy, Saviour, you are God alone

In the glory of the Father

With the Spirit: Three in One!

Hearing God’s word:

Psalm 16

Keep me safe, my God, for in you I take refuge. I say to the Lord, ‘You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.’ I say of the holy people who are in the land, ‘They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.’ Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more. I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods

or take up their names on my lips. Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. I will praise the Lord, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me.

I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I shall not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, Because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, nor will you let your faithful[b] one see decay. You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Acts 2:14a, 22-32

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: ‘Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.

‘Fellow Israelites, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man was handed over to you by God’s deliberate plan and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. David said about him:

‘“I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest in hope, because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead, you will not let your holy one see decay. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.”

‘Fellow Israelites, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. But he was a prophet and

knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. Seeing what was to come, he spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, that he was not abandoned to the realm of the dead, nor did his body see decay. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of it.

This is the word of the Lord

John 20: 19 - end

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were to-gether, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.

Again Jesus said, ‘Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.’ And with that he breathed on them and said, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.’

Jesus appears to Thomas.

Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord!’

But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not be-lieve.’

A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you!’ Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.’

Thomas said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’

Then Jesus told him, ‘Because you have seen me, you have believed;

Page 11: St Augustine’s ChurchWe will resume our normal (well as normal as it can be these circumstances!) pattern of online ... creative juices” flowing!! Helpful Links from Lucy James,

blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.’ Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

Hymn 2: Love Divine - 377

Love divine, all loves excelling, Joy of heaven to earth come down; Fix in us thy humble dwelling; All thy faithful mercies crown!

Jesus, Thou art all compassion, Pure unbounded love Thou art; Visit us with Thy salvation; Enter every trembling heart.

Breathe, O breathe Thy loving Spirit, Into every troubled breast! Let us all in Thee inherit; Let us find that promised rest. Take away the love of sinning; Alpha and Omega be; End of faith, as its Beginning, Set our hearts at liberty.

Come, Almighty to deliver, Let us all Thy life receive; Suddenly return and never, Never more Thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, Serve Thee as Thy hosts above, Pray and praise Thee without ceasing, Glory in Thy perfect love.

Page 12: St Augustine’s ChurchWe will resume our normal (well as normal as it can be these circumstances!) pattern of online ... creative juices” flowing!! Helpful Links from Lucy James,

Finish, then, Thy new creation; Pure and spotless let us be. Let us see Thy great salvation

Perfectly restored in Thee; Changed from glory into glory, Till in heaven we take our place, Till we cast our crowns before Thee, Lost in wonder, love, and praise.

The Sermon

Affirming our Faith

Do you believe and trust in God the Father?

All I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ

All I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe and trust in the Holy Spirit?

All I believe in the Holy Spirit, The holy, catholic church, The communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body

And the life everlasting. Amen

Hymn 3: Lead us Heavenly Father Lead Us - 321

Lead us, heavenly Father, lead us

O'er the world's tempestuous sea; Guard us, guide us, keep us, feed us, For we have no help but thee; Yet possessing every blessing, If our God our Father be.

Saviour, breathe forgiveness o'er us: All our weakness thou dost know; Thou didst tread this earth before us, Thou didst feel its keenest woe; Lone and dreary, faint and weary, Through the desert thou didst go.

Spirit of our God, descending, Fill our hearts with heavenly joy, Love with every passion blending, Pleasure that can never cloy: Thus provided, pardoned, guided, Nothing can our peace destroy.

The Prayers

Merciful Father

All Accept these prayers for the sake of your Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Hymn 4: Hallelujah! Sing to Jesus! - 153

Hallelujah! Sing to Jesus!

His the scepter, His the throne. Hallelujah! His the triumph, His the victory alone. Hark! the songs of peaceful Zion

Thunder like a mighty flood. “Jesus out of every nation

has redeemed us by His blood.”

Hallelujah! Bread of angels, Thou on earth our food, our stay; Hallelujah! Here the sinful Flee to Thee from day to day. Intercessor, Friend of sinners, Earth’s Redeemer, plead for me, Where the songs of all the sinless

Sweep across the crystal sea.

Thought for the Day

Romans 15.13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.

There are so many verses in the Bible that speak about hope. It must have been an issue that God felt we needed to be reassured about. In our current circumstances, it feels like we can’t have too many reminders of God’s promises to us: the promis-es that give us a hope in the future – however it might look!

Many of us are familiar with the promise of Jeremiah 29.11:

For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Isaiah 40.31 is another popular verse:

those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary,

they will walk and not be faint.

In Brazil, I learned two words for ‘waiting’. One of them means to wait for something physical like a bus. The

other means to wait hopefully…joyfully…in expectation of success or some positive outcome in a situation.

If you were to read Isaiah 40.31 in Brazilian Portu-guese, you would find the word ‘hope’ is translated as

the ‘waiting in joyful expectation’ option.

I like that. It reminds me that my hope in God is fuelled by a joyful expectation that He will keep His promises.

When I place my trust and hope in Him, I will not grow weary of waiting for the future He has promised.

Prayer for the Week

Lord God, we entrust to you all families and communities affected by Coronavirus, wherever they may be.

We pray especially for health care workers, that you may guide and protect them. We pray that your Spirit might inspire

those researching new medicines and treatments. And in the midst of this, keep us strong in faith, hope and love.

Grant us the courage and perseverance to be good neighbours. May the words of your Son Jesus Christ in the Our Father,

be our prayer as we entrust ourselves and all of us who are affected to your infinite power and love. AMEN.

Two years ago, our manager and our counsellor said that they wanted to retire. As trustees we did wonder if we would have to close. We prayed and felt we should advertise for a manager and Caroline Kemp, from The Point Church in Bur-gess Hill came for interview and was clearly felt to be the right person to take on The Haven. Since then, we have a strong schools team going into Warden Park, Oathall and Burgess Hill School for girls, giving interactive lessons on rela-tionships, and we have had very positive feedback from students and staff. We have two trained advisors who are managing the day to day calls and have 3 people attending a new training course in Chichester. We have a new trustee and possi-bly 2 as I shall be stepping down in a few months.

Our Mission in This Month is ….. The Haven

We have received some donations and grants and had two successful fundraising evenings, although funds are always welcome to keep up with the cost of rental for our office. We meet to pray each Monday morning to commit the week to God and pray for the clients. We have seen crisis pregnancy including including prenatal abnormality, miscar-riage, and post abortions., and again we have had some very positive feedback from clients at a diffi-cult time in their lives.

We have recently refreshed our website and re-launched with new and up to date literature. If you would like to know more please come and talk to me.

Online Easter Quiz Result

The Easter quiz was fought out online on Easter Monday evening between six teams from St Augustine’s. All teams put in a great effort, matched occasionally by some knowledge and skill. The eventual results were within three points of each other for five of the teams but there was a very clear winner, seven points ahead of the field. So:

Many congratulations to our winners:

Team Deal: Kevin and Gaynor Deal with Marilyn and Clive Slater

Here are some of the Judge’s comments:

Despite showing a lamentable ignorance of the Old Testament, Team Deal made up for this with excellent New Testament knowledge and an almost uncanny ability to sense where any chocolate might be hidden – all in all, worthy winners in the Anglican tradition.

Can anyone beat these Deals?

If any other person, family or team would like to take the quiz and see if they can beat the score of Team Deal, all you need is an email address to receive the questions and an hour of your time to complete the quiz and return your answers to the Judge. Please contact Pe-ter at [email protected] or telephone 01444 459990 to have a go. Here is a ‘test’ question to warm you up for the main quiz:

According to www.christianity.com, who were most likely to have been the two disciples who feature in the ‘Road to Emmaus’ story?

Cleopas and Nicodemus

Cleopas and his wife, Mary

Cleopas and his wife, Cleopatra

Bob Hope and Bing Crosby

(Answer D is reserved for the over-70’s and key non-workers
