Saint Augustine’s University has removed the interim tag and offi cially named Tim Chavous as head football coach on Friday, Feb. 19, 2016. Chavous coached the Falcons for eight games on an interim basis in the 2015 season. He guided the Falcons to their only victory of the season, a 31-24 win over

crosstown rival Shaw University on Nov. 7, 2015. “After his performance as an interim coach during the season, and his relationship with the student-athletes, the committee thought it would be in the best interest of the institution to extend his contract,” Falcons’ Athletic Director George Williams said. Chavous has been with the football program for four seasons, including three full seasons as running backs coach. Under his guidance, standout tailback Roderick Davenport II became the University’s career rushing leader in the modern era this past season, gaining 2,809 yards. Chavous has been the team’s academic coordinator since he arrived at Saint Augustine’s University in 2012. The Falcons have thrived in the classroom under Chavous, winning three consecutive awards for having the highest grade point average among all CIAA football teams.

“I would like to thank Coach Williams and President [Everett B.] Ward,” Chavous said. “My goal is to put a competitive team on the fi eld which also excels academically.”

Before coming to Saint Augustine’s University, Chavous was an assistant offensive coordinator and running backs coach at Saint Paul’s College from 2005 to 2011.

While at Saint Paul’s, Chavous was head baseball coach, admissions recruiter and director of student activities. During his tenure at Saint Paul’s, Chavous coached one All-CIAA rookie player and one 1,000-yard rusher.

Chavous was running backs coach at Virginia State from 2003 to 2004. He was a coach and camp coordinator at Virginia during the summers of 2002 to 2004.

Chavous was a standout college running back at Bethune-Cookman where he was a member of the 2001 MEAC championship team. He played two years at Pasadena (Calif.) City College for two years before transferring to Bethune-Cookman.

Chavous graduated from Bethune-Cookman with a Bachelor of Science degree in physical education and recreation in 2002. He earned a master’s degree in education and physical education in 2012 at his alma mater.

In high school, Chavous was a four-year starter at running back and linebacker at Lakewood (Fla.) High School. He was all-county at linebacker.

A native of St. Petersburg, Fla., Chavous is a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) and the Baseball Coaches Association.

Frizzelle last coached for the Falcons in 2013, when they tied for sixth in Division II nationally and led the CIAA in blocked kicks with eight. In 2012, Frizzelle guided Tyron Laughinghouse to the top spot in the NCAA Division II rankings in yards per kick return (40.14) which propelled Laughinghouse to All-America honors.

A former North Carolina Central University standout, Frizzelle was a defensive back in the NFL for nine years. He played for the Detroit Lions (1984-85), Philadelphia Eagles (1986-1990, 1992-93) and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1991).

82016 Saint Augustine’s University Football

2016 Season OutlookSaint Augustine’s University enters the 2016 football season with much optimism.

Head Coach Tim Chavous expects over 90 student-athletes including 28 returnees at practice during the preseason. He says the Falcons have the talent to turn around a program which won four games in two seasons.

Top returners on offense are wide receiver/returner Michael Allen, fullback Justin Shaw, quarterback D.J. Johnson, quarterback Julius Murphy, linemen Donald Brinkley and Jaron Rice, and placekicker/punter Sean Smith.

Allen is the team’s returning receptions leader while Shaw, Brinkley and Rice are part of a veteran group of blockers who opened lanes for former standout Roderick Davenport II, who became the University’s career leading rusher in the modern era last season. Johnson and Murphy both started in 2015. Smith showed promise as a kicker during his freshman season.

Key defensive stalwarts are defensive back Darius Cole, defensive ends Darius Goodman and Chris Roberts, defensive lineman Chasz Cosby and linebackers Trey King and Terry Warren.

Cole led the Falcons and ranked among the CIAA leaders in interceptions (5) as a freshman. He is one of three student-athletes in the modern era to intercept fi ve passes in a season. Goodman has led the Falcons in tackles for loss and sacks in his two years on the squad. Chavous is anticipating a breakout season from Roberts, who is moving back to defensive end in the 4-3 defense after

playing linebacker in the 3-4 last season. Roberts has 24.5 tackles for loss and 12.5 sacks combined in his previous two seasons.

Cosby followed up an All-CIAA rookie season with a solid sophomore campaign. He tied for second on the team in tackles.

Linebackers King and Warren excelled in their fi rst season playing heavy minutes. King led the team and ranked among the CIAA leaders in sacks, and Warren was the Falcons’ leading tacker. Coach Chavous also expects strong safety Miguel Marshall to make an immediate impact on defense after sitting out last year.

The Falcons open the regular season with a challenging non-conference schedule including road games against FCS Division I foes North Carolina A&T State (Sept. 3) and North Carolina Central (Sept. 17). Sandwiched between those games is a home encounter against perennial Division II power Carson-Newman (Sept. 10).

The contests should prepare the Falcons for the conference opponents. The Falcons host Lincoln (Pa.) on Sept. 24, Fayetteville State for Homecoming on Oct. 22 and crosstown rival Shaw in the regular-season fi nale on Nov. 5.

The Falcons are on the road for a three-game stretch against Virginia Union (Oct. 1), Livingstone (Oct. 8) and Winston-Salem State (Oct. 15). They also visit Johnson C. Smith on Oct. 29. In all, the Falcons have four home games and six road contests.
