MASS INTENTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:

Sunday, November 27th, 2016, First Sunday of Advent: The Son of Man will come at an hour you do not expect. Good stewards know that they are accountable to God for all they have and are, and they strive to live in readiness for His coming.

First Sunday of Advent November 27, 2016 "You . . . must be prepared, for at an hour you do not expect, the Son of Man will come." -- Matthew 24:44

BE PREPARED Be prepared. It's that simple. As this Advent season opens before us, the Lord Jesus summons us to stand ready for his coming. At this time of year much of our attention is focused on being prepared for the details that accompany the holiday season. We purchase gifts; we decorate our homes, inside and out; we prepare foods that we eat only during the holidays; we write and send Christmas cards; we attend holiday concerts; we prepare either to welcome family and friends into our homes or arrange for visits to their homes. We really can't escape the details that make up the season. Perhaps this Advent is a time to attend to all those details with a different spin. As we prepare to celebrate the feast of Christmas, why not be deliberate about acknowledging the presence of the Lord as we go about these tasks? The Lord often comes to us in wonderfully surprising ways. Let us be prepared. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Reflections on Today’s Readings: FOCUS: The Jesus who is born in time and history is also the Christ who will come in glory to judge all. The season of Advent begins today with a call to perseverance and vigilance, as we prepare, not just to celebrate the historical event of the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, but also to celebrate our central belief that Christ will come again in glory to judge all humanity. Our readings are chosen to help us reflect on this great truth and to be prepared for the coming of Christ. LITURGY OF THE WORD: Our readings speak to us about eternal life and the fulfillment of the kingdom. Isaiah, the Old Testament prophet of consolation, describes a pilgrimage to the mountain of the Lord where the faithful will be instructed in His ways. Paul calls us to wake up and to throw off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light. Our Gospel echoes this, describing the need to be prepared for the unexpected coming of Christ in glory.

Kids Living Faith: Sunday, November 27th, 2016

First Sunday of Advent Let’s walk in the light of the Lord.

- Isaiah 2:5 I was once in a cave where it was so dark, I couldn’t even see my own hand in front of my face. I was afraid to move! But as soon as I turned my flashlight back on, I could see the way I needed to walk. The Church teaches us to follow Jesus and walk in His light. Whenever we are scared or confused, we need to turn to Jesus and let Him be the flashlight that lights our path.

Jesus, show me your light.

Thank you in advance for your support!

First Sunday of Advent: Reflecting on God’s Word. “O come, O come, Emmanuel, and ransom captive Israel!” So begins the familiar chant that will be heard in churches through-out the world this Advent. It is based on the O Antiphons, which are the verses for the Gospel acclamation at Mass on the last seven days of Advent. Each of those antiphons prays for the coming of Christ, and each one seems to capture the spirit of a different Sunday of Advent. The verse that harmonizes with this Sunday’s scriptures expresses our longing for the “Radiant Dawn” of the Lord’s coming at the end of time when the “sun of justice” will “shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death.” In the readings we hear Isaiah describe the peaceful “days to come,” when all will “walk in the light of the Lord!” (Isaiah 2:2, 5). Paul tells us it is time “to awake from sleep” and “put on the armor of light” for “the day is at hand” (Romans 13:11, 13, 12). Jesus, too, cautions us to “stay awake” to be ready for the “day your Lord will come” (Matthew 24:42). All around us we seem to be getting a similar message: “No time to waste! Only thirty shopping days left till Christmas! Don’t be caught unprepared!” What’s the difference between the two messages? One tells us to anticipate a day of giving and getting and eating and drinking. We might prepare for that day by rushing and buying and wrapping and baking. The other tells us to anticipate a day, not of avarice and jealousy, but of justice for the oppressed and peace on earth. We will prepare for that day when we “throw off the works of darkness” and “put on the Lord Jesus Christ.” —Virginia Stillwell Copyright © 3, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

Ministry equips us to deepen our love for God and share our faith…

Make sure holiday shopping is done safely. No matter

how you handle Christmas gifts, you’re likely to have to go to the mall with your kids during the holiday season. In the midst of the crowds, children can easily become separated from their parents. Be alert in crowds and maintain awareness of what others around you are doing. Institute the buddy system – have your kids hold your hand or one another’s. Talk with your children about what to do, and who to go to for help, should you become separated. Also, it is important to give your child your cell phone number so mall security can contact you quickly if needed. For more information, please visit http://safety.more4kids.info/186/shopping-with-kids/.

PLEASE NOTE: MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY,

THE CHURCH IS OPEN FROM 6 AM - 6 PM. SATURDAYS, THE CHURCH WILL BE CLOSED AFTER THE 7:30-8 PM EVENING CONFESSION. SUNDAY, THE CHURCH WILL BE CLOSED

AFTER THE 7:30 PM

The All Souls Novena continues throughout the month of November. Envelopes are in the Vestibule and by the Church side doors. Return the envelope with the names of your loved ones To the Rectory or drop them in the collection basket.

FACT OF LIFE Advent and Our Lady of Guadalupe

December 12 marks the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the unborn and the Americas. It is fitting that her feast falls squarely during the observance of Advent. Mary appears as Our Lady of Guadalupe with a message of prayer, love and compassion. She embodies hope for the Americas just as in Advent we recognize that the pregnant Madonna carrying the Christ Child is hope for mankind. Advent is about waiting and preparing for the birth of Christ. Any expectant mother knows the excitement and anxious feeling of waiting and preparing for her beloved child, but the waiting of the Madonna was different in that her Son was a gift not just to her family or her small community. Mary’s baby, Jesus, was a gift to all of mankind, those previously born and those not yet born, because without Him salvation of the human race would not have been. And so, as we commemorate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe during this Advent season, we see easily the con-nection between these two important liturgical observances. Author Theresa Thomas is a Catholic mother of nine children. She lives in Indiana. Excerpt from website: The Integrated Catholic Life: The Pro-Life Message of Our Lady of Guadalupe and Advent 12.10.12.
