Our First Reading speaks of the
righteous one bearing the iniquities of
many. I like very much how Gregory
Collins OSB speaks of Jesus’ taking
on sin for our sake: ‘Jesus … the
sinless one, became totally at one
with lost humanity: he became one
with our god-forsakenness … like an
enormous sponge he absorbed into
his own person all the evil carried out
by every human being since the
world began until, utterly wrung out,
he carried us in union with his own
humanity into the furnace of love
burning eternally in the heart of the
Holy Trinity.’ (Meeting Christ in his
Mysteries, p. 56)
