Communion at the 9:00 AM Mass. Concluding prayers and the

Benediction Rite for this holy hour begins about 10:15 AM.

Baptism: Instruction classes are held on the last Saturday of

each month in the rectory at 11 AM. Parents should call the

rectory to make arrangements before they attend the class and

bring with them a copy of the child’s birth certificate. Baptism

is administered on the 2nd Sunday of every month at 1:30 PM.

Confession / Reconciliation: Saturday: 4:00 PM to 4:45

PM or by appointment with one of the priests.

rangements for their wedding at least six months in advance

of their proposed wedding date. Please call the rectory to

make an appointment. Marriage preparation (Pre-Cana) is avail-

able directly through OLBS as well as through the diocese.

Please contact Laura (718 352-9247) or the rectory for informa-

tion on the OLBS program. For information on the diocesan

program, please log on to www.pre-cana.org

Anointing of the Sick: One of the priests should be called

as soon as there is a sign of serious illness.

Communion of the Sick: Anyone who cannot attend Mass

because of illness may receive the Eucharist at home on a regu-

lar basis. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion assist

the priests in this ministry. Please call Agnes, Communion of

the Sick Coordinator, at 718 631-4793, or the rectory.

Cenacles of Life: Mondays 7:30pm - Rosary and Eucharistic

Adoration; and Saturdays at 8:15am Rosary in the church.

What Conditions are Necessary for Proper

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament The sponsors of this devotion should make sure that a

suitable number of worshippers are present during the

entire time of exposition. The church also asks us to

light four to six candles around the sacrament, and per-

mits us to use incense. The Blessed Sacrament may

never be left exposed without at least one worshipper

present.

Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained

Discover the big picture of the Catholic faith, and how to live it! Catholicism is an entire way of life. We might be familiar with different aspects of the Catholic faith. But how does it all fit together? And what differ-ence does it make for our lives? Symbolon: The Catho-lic Faith Explained opens up the “big picture” of the Catholic faith in a way that helps us know it, live it and articulate it to others. Join us as our own Fr. Mark Mathias leads our five (5) sessions this Fall. Each ses-sion includes a beautiful DVD and some time for dis-cussion. Symbolon is for everyone, and all are wel-come: those practicing their faith, those disconnected from the Church in any way, and those who are think-ing of becoming Catholic. Symbolon will meet on Wednesdays at 7:30pm in the Parish Center, as fol-lows: 10/14-Divine Revelation-God Seeking Us & the Compass for our Lives

Respect Life Committee: On September

22, 2015 the U.S. Senate failed to pass a law that

would have prevented most abortions after babies

are old enough to feel pain. (This is after the House of Representatives passed it on September 18, 2015.) Science tells us that these children can fell the intense pain of the abortion tools. Additionally, the abortion lobby has launched an appalling marketing campaign, designed to cover up the trauma and grief of post-operative women wounded by abortion and encour-aged them to flaunt their abortions on social media with a hashtag.

From the Pastor’s Desk….

Dear Parishioners, Several times during the Holy Fa-ther’s recent visit I heard or read commentaries that this pope was revolutionary, or more mildly, counter-cultural. I was pleased when some inevitably pointed out, “Yeah, like Jesus!” In today’s gospel Jesus warns against the false sense of security often derived from wealth and the abundance of material possessions. We note how the rich young man and the disciples as well are shocked by his words. Pope Francis’ words were clear that business and the creation of wealth has an important and necessary function in a society. We enjoy the gifts of creation. But material-ism is another thing altogether. Jesus warns against thinking that because we have plenty we also have God’s favor and are assured an eternal reward. Heaven is out of reach for us; it is only possible for us because of God’s goodness and mercy. Jesus clearly challenges the rich young man in his love for him. What might the Lord say to us if we dared to ask “what more need I do?”

Mark 10:17-30

When the rich man in today’s Gospel first ap-proached Jesus, he was excited, optimistic, and confident. We know this because he “ran up” to the Lord and “knelt down before him.” He may have been quite proud of himself when he was able to say about the commandments, “all of these I have observed from my youth.” The fellow probably thought his work was done. But Jesus knew this man better than he knew himself. When Jesus challenged him to become detached from his wealth—to sell his things and give to the poor—it was too much. The man left Jesus. His excitement and confidence were gone, and he was sad. What are we clinging to that prevents us from accepting Jesus’ in-vitation? For some of us it may be wealth or posses-sions, for others the quest for success or the desire for popularity. Or it may be entirely different. God knows, and deep down we do too. Today, Jesus is calling us to love him with our whole heart, not just a comfortable percentage. It may seem too much to give, but this faithful surrender is the path to happi-ness, both now and in the life to come.
