GATE FEATURE ON RADIO LANCASHIRE
On Wednesday night, Gate travelled to Padiham, and before the game Radio
Lancashire interviewed manager Danny Penswick. On being asked whether it
felt strange being called gaffer, Danny said “It’s very strange. I’m not used to
being called it but I don’t think it’s something that will catch on as I’ll still be
Danny in the changing rooms. If they say it then it shows they’ve got a little
bit of respect for me and hopefully they will listen to me.” Penswick has gone
from club captain to manager within a week and was asked if he had much
time to draw breath. “Not really, no. There’s not much breath to be drawn.
They’re still the same lads that were here last week and we’re still the same
team.”
Penswick was asked if he will benefit from being a young manager having
more energy and more free time, and having more contacts with players of his
own age. “Definitely. At the end of the day, if players are coming into the
club then they know me as a player an hopefully can respect me as a manag-
er. If I came in as a manager with none of the lads knowing me, then I think it
would be more of a difficult task to get them to respect me and believe in
what I’m trying to do. I think they understand the way I want to play football
and the way I am as a player and hopefully they can take traces of that on
and go on the pitch and perform to the best of their abilities.
Danny was asked how many senior pros he had in the changing room, and if
there is going to be a few that he will have to tear a strip off now and again.
“Hopefully not. I don’t want to tear a strip off any of them if they are playing
well, but there may come a time where that needs to be done. In the last
week, I’ve had nothing but good feedback and attitude from the lads. In
terms of senior players, we haven’t got that many, we’ve got Rico who is
about 102 but apart from that we are a young side. I don’t think it’s a case of
me taking over and everyone else is 34 or 35 who are winding their career
down. They are all hungry young lads who want to do well for the club and
for themselves.”
IN THIS PROGRAMME
In this issue, we have an ACTION REPLAY from the games against Winsford
United, Padiham and Bootle. Gate midfielder Josh Kay gives his predictions for
this evenings European Qualifiers in PREDICITION CORNER. You can see the
match reports from the two under 13 games, and how they have extended
their unbeaten run. In our regular feature THE YEAR THEY WERE BORN, we
take a trip back to 1983,
Ben Fletcher (Sponsored by S.E.I. [Maintenance] LTD)
Superb young shot stopper that had a tremendous season last year. He kept numerous clean sheets and
played every single minute of every single game. 2015/16 will be his 3rd season with the club where he’ll
be looking to continue his fine form.
Nathan Trout (Available for sponsorship)
Nathan moved to the Fylde coast from Liverpool. A ball winning centre half that has a big presence on the
pitch, he’ll be hoping to force his way into the team and make his position his own.
Alex Colquhoun (Available for sponsorship)
After a short spell at the club last season, Alex has returned to the club hungry and determined to play on
a regular basis. He showed signs of quality last season and will be looking to cement his place in the
2015/16 season.
Brett Ferguson (Sponsored by Service Solutions Direct Ltd)
One of the main characters within the changing room, “Channy” as he is called, always has stories to tell,
consistently produced good displays during last season and got on the score sheet on numerous occasions.
A very adaptable player that has made a huge impression on all within the club. Winner of Clubman of the
Year 2014/15.
Andy Richards (Available for sponsorship)
A club stalwart! ‘Rico’ as he is known, has been with the club for many seasons and has become a linchpin
of the side. His performances and changing room experience has played a vital role in recent success. A
player with many superstitions that is well liked at the club.
Josh Westwood (Sponsored by Mark Ashmore)
Josh was a rock at the heart of defence during last season. He produced some fine individual displays and
chipped in with a few headed goals. A quiet individual but very popular player that lets his feet, or head do
the talking. Josh is also adaptable to play up front.
Mike Hall (Available for sponsorship)
Mike was only with Gate briefly last season but his knowledge and experience of the game was beneficial
to all that played alongside him. He was influential in his performances and will be looking to have the
same impact throughout the 2015/16 season.
Conah Bishop (Available for sponsorship)
Conah is one of the youngest players in the squad and plays on the right side of midfield. He has the pace
to run at the opposition and can also score goals. He is a great addition to the team.
Joe Noblet (Available for sponsorship)
Joe had a spell with Gate a few seasons ago, and returned under the new management of Danny
Penswick. He is an attacking midfielder with an eye for goal and will be sure to add goals to the squad.
Josh Kay (Available for sponsorship)
One of the youngest players in the squad that broke into the first team ranks at the end
of last season. Very talented player with a strong personality which makes him ideal for
non league football. Very bright future ahead of him if he stays focused and learns from
others around him.
Alex McKendrick (Available for sponsorship)
Alex has been at the club for a number of seasons, first arriving under the stewardship
of ex manager Russ McKenna. His work rate and willingness to do the unfashionable
jobs in a game have been hugely important to the team. Injury put a halt to his 2014/15
season but he’ll be looking to come back a stronger player this season.
Billy McKenna (Available for sponsorship)
The flying winger missed a large part of last season due to injury but is looking to make
the right midfield position his own. A popular player within the changing room that can
have a big influence on games when in the mood.
Antony Stayte (Available for sponsorship)
Stayte is a great addition to the squad, who brings experience from his time at AFC
Fylde and from teams in a higher tier. He knows how to organise and motivate his team
mates and is very good at holding the ball up.
Ashley Rowley (Available for sponsorship)
Ash joined Gate towards the end of last season, and impressed in the time he played. He
scored a crucial equaliser at home to Congleton Town and will be looking to have an
impact this season.
Danny Penswick (Sponsored by Bill White)
Danny is the manager and captain of the club. He first joined midway through the
2013/14 season and soon established himself as a leader and highly influential player.
His game understanding and levels of performance have seen him become a focal point
of the team.
Mark Buchan (Available for sponsorship)
Mark models himself on Ally McCoist. A fiery Scot that knows where the goal is. His
workmanlike performances often go unnoticed, but he scored some valuable goals dur-
ing last season. An influential player both on and off the pitch and will be a key player
during this season.
Aaron Clarke (Available for sponsorship)
Aaron was part of the Kirkham and Wesham squad which was victorious at Wembley in
2008. Unfortunately for Aaron, he picked up an injury the week before the final so didn’t
take part in the game. A quick striker who possesses skill and eye for a pass and can
also play in behind the striker in attacking midfield. Aaron will be looking to cement a
spot up top and to fire Gate up the table.

WEMBLEY DREAM ENDED FOR GATE Saturday 3rd October 2015
Report by Mark Ashmore. Picture by Albert Cooper
Squires Gate kicked off a new era at The Royal British Legion Stadium as Danny Penswick took charge of
his first game. Penswick took the reigns after the club parted company with Dave McCann. Penswick
chose to recall Stephen Higgins after he served his ban and Mckendrick after his injury.
Gate started the half on fire and could have scored after 3 minutes. Penswick fired the freekick into the
box but couldn’t find a Gate man. From the goal kick Winsford went down the other end and had a
chance of their own. But Ben Fletcher came to Gates rescue to deny Winsford after the attacker found
space. Alex Colquhoun had the chance to open the scoring from the corner but his shot floated over the
bar.
The game was controlled by Gate throughout the first half with the home side seeing more of the ball
and having the best of the chances. Winsford opened the scoring against the run of play after 16
minutes. The striker reading the flick on which beat Colquhoun found the run of his teammate to score.
Gate had a shout for a penalty turned down on 25 minutes a good burst into the box from Mckendrick
the defender seemed to handball the ball but the ref waved away Gate’s claims. Gate were unlucky to
go into half time one goal down but couldn’t convert there chances.
The second half featured many chances again for Gate but the Blackpool side struggled to capitalise on
their dominance. Ash Rowley had the chance to grab a goal back for Gate on 50 minutes from just inside
the box. A good run from McKenna found Rowley who spun his man but his shot was saved. Rowley was
involved again 5 minutes later when he found Alex Mckendrick on the edge of the box but he chose to
cut the ball back to the edge of the box instead of across the face of goal and the ball was cleared. Billy
McKenna was next to attack the Winsford back line and showed good skill to get past his man but his
cross into the box couldn’t find any of the 3 Gate attackers waiting. Ryan Riley had a chance to put Gate
level after coming off the bench but his header went over the bar. The damning blow for Gate came on
84 minutes when Winsford broke on the counter attack. Gate lost the ball up top and Winsford broke to
find Danny Hudson he jinked past his marker and fired past Fletcher to put Winsford 2-0 up and through
to the next round. Gate had a chance to grab a goal back from the free kick but Josh Westwood’s
header went over the bar with one of the last kicks of the game.
After the game, Penswick said: “I was
pleased with the intensity and desire from
the boys today. Whilst we didn't get the
result we wanted, we looked to get the ball
down and play which was a positive and
gave us a better attacking threat."

THE GATE IS LOCKED Wednesday 7th October 2015
Report by Mark Ashmore. Picture by Albert Cooper.
Squires Gate faced recently relegated Padiham last Wednesday nightsearching for their first
league win of the season. Gat were in good spirits coming into the game with Danny Penswick
feeling confident they could win the game. Penswick chose to recall Anthony Stayte to the side
in place of Mckendrick who dropped to the bench. Joining him on the bench was new signing
Joe Noblet who signed for the club from Kendal having previously played for Gate two seasons
ago.
Gate started the game n the front foot and showed early attacking intent. Nobody could get
on the end of Richards early free kick into the box in the opening minutes of the game. Mark
Buchan was next with a chance after he jinked past his defender but his shot went wide of the
post. The home sides first chance of the game came when their centre back was forward from
the back but his header went over the bar from the free kick. Josh Westwood had the next
chance but Padiham’s keeper took the ball off Westwood’s head before he could connect with
it. Josh Kay had Gates best chance after beating four men his shot was blocked by Bamba for
Padiham. The home side had the last chance of the first half but Ex Gate player Alex Ralph’s
shot was blocked by Westwood.
Gate’s first chance came on the break nut Buchan took a touch too many and the home
keeper managed to scramble the ball away. Billy McKenna was in the rest place at the right
time but he put the rebound wide of the post. Josh Kay had a great chance to open the scoring
again but after he cut inside his shot cannoned off the inside of the post. Padiham caught Gate
on the break but EX Gate player Alex Murphy was beat to the ball. 10 minutes on the home
side almost scored by Richards was in the right place at the right time to clear the ball off the
line from a Fildes shot. Billy McKenna found space in behind the backline but he was closed
down by the keeper who spilled the ball. The
ball fell to Mark Buchan in the middle who
jinked past his man and fired the ball into the
back of the net with seven minutes of the game
left. Gate’s last chance of the game saw them
catch Padiham on the break with Penswick down
the right hand side but his ball into the box was
gathered by the goalkeeper. Gate held on until
the final whistle to record their first league
victory of the season.

DANNY
PENSWICK Tonight represents a great opportunity for the entire squad. It's my first home league
game in charge after two challenging away games within a week. I'm pleased we man-
aged to get our first league win of the season on Wednesday and it's given all the lads
a massive boost. Saturday was tough from both a playing and managerial perspective.
We were beaten by a team who worked harder than us which is unacceptable at any
level of football. The lads have taken that on board and I'm looking forward to a much
more positive and aggressive performance tonight.
From a personal perspective it's been a whirlwind couple of weeks and id like to thank
Magsy (John Maguire), Stu (Stuart Hopwood) and everyone around the club for their
positive feedback and confidence in my abilities. Let's look forward to what should be a
great game and hopefully some more points.
We go into tonight's game looking to bounce back after a poor result and performance
on Saturday. Hopefully we’ll get a positive reaction from the lads as we try to improve
our recent run of results.
We’ve seen completely two different sides to Gate in the last two fixtures, and as a
group, consistency will be key over the next couple of games.
Silsden were unlucky to lose to a last minute goal against Runcorn on Saturday and will
be full of confidence going into tonight’s game. It promises to be a cracker.

THE GATE IS UNLOCKED
Squires Gate travelled to Bootle on Saturday afternoon looking to build on their first league
win of the season on Wednesday night at Padiham. Manager Danny Penswick chose to recall
Ryan Riley, Nathan Trout and Mike Hall to a strong five-man bench.
The home side lined up with a young energetic looking side and didn’t take long to get into
the game. It took them just 5 minutes to find a way though Gates backline and open the
scoring. Josh Hamilton finding his way into the box unmarked to finish well past Fletcher.
Bootle looked lively and were first to most lose balls and kept looking to launch a quick
attack each time they got the ball. Gates first real chance came down the right hand side
with Mckenna his run was found by Penswick but Mckenna’s cross was cleared at the near
post. Josh Kay had a chance shortly after when he was found in the middle of the six-yard
box but his volley was straight at the keepers chest who did well to quickly clear the ball.
Josh Westwood was the next to take aim but like Kay previously his volley was blocked this
time by the face of his own player Mark Buchan. Bootle made it two when a long ball over
the top caught Gates defence out and Peterson made it two. The homeside looked ever con-
fident with a two-goal lead and made it three after 42 minutes. The ball bobbled up onto the
hand of Alex Colquhoun who was judged to have deliberately handled the ball Hamilton
converting from the spot to make it three before half time.
Gates first chance of the second half came from manager Danny Penswick. He lined up the
free kick perfectly but the home keeper did magnificently to save the shot. Gate pulled a
goal back after Ash Rowley spotted the home keeper of his line. He lined up the shot from
out side the box and with the goalkeeper on the floor from Buchan’s challenge, the ball
bounced over the line and in.
Gate tried to attack the home side but couldn’t find the
fluidity they had on Wednesday night and struggled to add to
the one goal they had. Bootle were ruthless in Gates box and
made it 4 on 73 minutes. Right back Ste Rothwell somehow
found himself inside the box to fire to Fletcher’s left and
score. Unfortunalty that would be the defender’s last act as a
couple of minutes later he would dislocate his knee.
Substitue Dom Marie rounded off the scoring for the game a
couple of minutes later when his fresh legs burst past Gates
tiring defence to make it 5-1 and game over.

SQUIRES GATE 3-2 SILSDEN
Sat 14 September, 2013
Gate were the first team to attack, taking the game to the home side, and got two successive corners, but alas
came to nothing.
But unfortunately it was down hill from then on as the visitors failed to work on the home keeper Edward Hall.
While at the other end Ben Fletcher was called upon to make several fine saves, the first he had to dive low to his
left to turn a shot past the post, and then fly across the goal to push over a free kick from just outside the penalty
area, which beat a five man wall. Gate's attacking moves never got near enough to cause problems for the home
side. Too often, Gate were relying on turning the ball out for a corner, as a last resort, and on 33 mins it was from a
corner kick, that Danny Gleave scored the first of his two goals, with his second coming 12 mins into the second half
on 57 mins.
The second half produced a Blood Red Sky, as the winter sun set behind the home goal, and it was the visitors who
saw red, as they gave away two penalties with Chris Wademan scored both, sending Ben Fletcher the wrong way
on 65 and 75 mins. While in between the penalties, Gate's Jamie McQuillan pulled one back, after a solo run and
shot beat keeper Edward Hall. But the referee, had to be called over by the assistant as the ball broke through the
back of the net, with the spectators thinking it had missed, it clearly had gone through a gaping hole in the back of
the net, and finished outside the back of the goal. It was only after the referee Neil Munday had checked the hole in
the net, that he awarded a goal to Gate.
But there was no way back for the visitors, and a poor clearance from skipper Daniel Penswick, straight at an
attacker, gave Dale Feather on as a sub, the chance to score, he beat Ben Fletcher giving him chance, and with only
two mins remaining Silsden pushed forward to try and improve their goal difference.
With just 60 seconds on the clock, Squires Gate resumed where they left off the previous Saturday at Maltby Main,
when Jack Sowerby's mazy run ended with a shot from 25 yards just flying inches over the bar, and the confidence
gained last week was evident as they tore into the visitors. The home fans didn't have to wait long before it pro-
duced results, and on 10 mins it was again Jack Sowerby on the spot to side foot a pass from Ben Fishwick, giving
keeper Edward Hall no chance, and put the home side into a deserved lead. Then three mins later he doubled his
and Gate's goal tally when he ran through the defence firing a shot past the keeper on 13 mins. The running and
passing of a Gate side with a handful of team changes from when they played their last home game, going down to
Wigan Robin Park, was a revelation as to the pace and skill of this young side, restricting the visitors to very few
opportunities.
While their keeper was kept busy, and made a great save from Ben Fishwick back after injury, when Ben hit a 'pile
driver' from a corner kick, and Edward Hall brought off a great save turning the ball round the post. But as usual,
while Gate were going forward the visitors got the chance to pull a goal back when Michael Hall's pass found Na-
than Egan, who gave Ben Fletcher no chance as he drove the shot past him into the bottom corner, on the stroke of
half time, sending them into the dressing room feeling they were in with a chance. When the game resumed it was
Silsden who were on the acendecy, and a fine save by Ben Fletcher, and the visitors efforts were rewarded when
from the resulting corner, Stephan Throup, ran through to score smashing the ball into the net on the 62 min.
This lifted the game with the pace taking it's toll on some of the players, and both teams brought on fresh legs to
try to snatch the all important winner, and it was Gate who retook the lead, on 67 mins. With what turned out to
be the match winner. It was a goalmouth scramble with several shots being blocked on the line, but the home side
was unable to clear, and a shot from Ben Jakes, was adjudged to have crossed the line by the Referee's assistant,
who was in the best position to judge.

SQUIRES GATE 2-0 SILSDEN
Sat 06 December, 2014
Squires Gate travelled to 8th placed Silsden full of confidence after an impressive victory against Maine
Road the previous weekend. It was Gate who had the first shot of the game but Murphy's volley fell
straight into the arms of the Silsden keeper. A strong drive down the left from the home side led to Gate
conceding a corner but the home side couldn't capitalise from the corner. It was Silsden who again had
the next chance, a free kick in was parried low from Ben Fletcher but the follow up shot was blocked on
the line.
The next passage of play was all the home side, good build up play in midfield led to a long diagonal pass
to the left but the final ball delivered in to the box couldn't find a home sides head. It was Gate again on
the attack with clever play from Jack Sowerby on the edge of the area but he couldn't find room to let off
a shot. It was Dunn and Sowerby who again linked up but Dunn’s cross into the box just evaded Sower-
by’s head and was cleared away. Sowerby was again in the box after good work in the midfield from
Cook and Murphy to win the ball back, but Sowerby’s cross was millimetres away from Dickinson’s head.
It was the home side who seemed to start the brighter in the second half, a strong drive through the
middle of the Gate midfield but Ben Fletcher made a superb save. Good work again from the Silsden
winger but his cross which found the attackers head found the bar, not the net. Silsden who put on the
pressure throughout the second half, shot wide after a chip over the edge of the box. It’s fair to say that
Gate keeper Ben Fletcher was man of the match for the away side in the second half, he continued to
pull of save after save to deny the home side. Gate weren't without their chances though and as the
home side started to slow Gate continued the pressure. Winger Harry Dunn cut through the home sides
defence like a hot knife through butter on 80 minutes and only a last minute clearance denied what
would have been a fine goal. With the game drawing to a close both keepers saw lots of the ball but
neither side could find the winning goal.
By this point, Gate were 3 points off what they had reached throughout the previous campaign. Squires
Gate made a bright start to the game and just a couple of minutes into the half should have been ahead,
good work by Mark Buchan, who's knock down found Alex Murphy's run into the box but his shot was
gathered well by the Silsden keeper. Gate looked the hungrier of the two sides in the opening half and
made it very tough for Silsden to keep the ball and play their normal game, Gate made sure Silsden didn't
have time on the ball but when the away side did get through, the Gate defence stood firm. More great
play from Harry Dunn and Alex Murphy allowed the latter to find space in the corner of the 6 yard box
but his shot hit the side netting, Gate were getting closer. The break though would come shortly after for
Gate who would take the lead. The corner fired into the near post and with the flick on won Mark Buch-
an was in the right place at the right time to flick home in what was a real poachers goal. Silsden looked
to be getting back into the game in the final 10 minutes but Gate stood firm to deny them and could have
doubled their lead on the break, with great work from impressive Harry Dunn to get in behind at the back
post but the end product let the player down.
Into the second half Gate started as they'd started the first with alot of high pressure not allowing Silsden
time on the ball, it took Gate 7 minutes to double their lead a good ball into the danger area for Gate
Alex Murphy taking the chance and stretching to get a toe onto the ball and put Gate two up. Gate had to
be on their toes soon after with Josh Westwood in the right place to clear the ball off the line and deny
the visitors. As the half went on Silsden had their chances to pull a goal back first a double save from Ben
Fletcher to deny them. Then Silsden had the ball in the net but the goal was ruled out for a foul.

Please note that the reserves’ home games will now be played at Myerscough College. Last
weekend’s cup fixture against Workington Town was postponed, and the reserves will now travel
to AFC Fylde on Friday where they will be looking to pick up their second consecutive win after a
bad start. However, it will be a tough game as AFC Fylde currently sit 5th in the league and have
scored 14 goals in 4 games.

First Qualifying Round 2004/05
Silsden AFC was formed in September 1904 and has seen many teams come and go playing Saturdays and Sundays.
The present Saturday senior team has been playing for only eight years starting life in the Craven & District football
league Division Two, after the said team had progressed through the junior section within the club. They spent 3
years in the Craven league moving up to the premier division and in the last year set a new record of going through
the season unbeaten in all competitions. From there they joined the West Riding County Amateur League in Division
Two and quickly gained promotion up into the Premier division where they enjoyed 3 seasons. In season 2002/2003
Silsden set another record in going through the season unbeaten in all competitions. To add to this they also won
the West Riding County Challenge Cup for the following 3 years.
In season 2004/2005 Silsden gained promotion to Division 1 in The North West Counties Football League in their
inaugural season. Silsden AFC have also a progressive junior set up with age groups running from U7’s right through
to U17’s, some age groups run two teams making this one of the largest football clubs in the area. All teams play at
Keighley Rd, Silsden, where we have 2 senior fields as well as a large set up for the junior section
In 2005/2006 Silsden under 19’s entered for the first time the West Riding Academy League (Northern Section)
Division West. In 2006/2007 Silsden under 19’s won the Northern Alliance West Division League. In May 2009 the
building of a new clubhouse & changing facilities was completed & in August 2010 saw the completion of the
ground improvements which meant a return of Silsden AFC to its rightful place back in Silsden at The Angel Telecom
Stadium.

THE TASMANIAN LINK
In March of 2014, Chris Wademan made his last appearance for Silsden before linking
up with Tasmanian side Riverside Olympic of the Northern Premier League. Chris
followed in the footsteps of a number of other Cobbydalers who have tried their luck
down under. It was no doubt that Silsden would miss the goals that Wademan bought
to the side throughout the season. Former Silsden players Andy Geary and Colin Guest
also had a spell down there, and ended up staying in Australia.
Chris returned to Silsden, and has made ten league appearances so far this season, and
has been voted man of the match in a third of those. During their 3-2 defeat at home to
Maine Road at the start of the campaign, despite not scoring, he made himself known to
the opposition. Within the first 4 minutes, he played a part in setting up the first goal, as
he sped past Callum Jones and drove the ball into the box for Daniel Harper to eventual-
ly score. Wademan was causing a lot of problems for the opponents as they could not
keep up. His mazy dribble beat two defenders before getting upended in the penalty
box. This performance earnt him his first man of the match award.
The “Tazmanian Devil” as he is called by some Silsden fans, was there once again in
their game against Alsager Town. With 90 minutes gone, and the Cobbydalers down to
10 men and losing 1-0, they were surely resigned to defeat? Wademan picks the ball up
on the right from 25 yards, drifts past four Alsager defenders as if they weren’t there
and slides it past Burzynski to level the scoring in stoppage time. With seconds left,
substitute Zack Dale out paced the bullets’ defence and volleyed it past Burzynski to
give Silsden a 2-1 lead.
Chris Wademan has been one of Silsden’s biggest attack threat this season. The right
midfielder can just pick the ball up from anywhere and is not scared to take on any
defender. Another team that failed to deal with his pace was Padiham, although he did-
n’t add to his goal tally, he was just running through the defence and setting up goal
scoring opportunities for the duration of the game.
As well as creating chances, Chris also know where the goal is. He is currently Silsdens
top scorer with four league goals, but he has scored ten goals in all competitions.

THE YEAR IN FOOTBALL
Bob Paisley’s last season as Liverpool manager ended on a
high as they won the First Division with a comfortable 11
point lead over Watford. It was Watford’s first season in
the First Division after being promoted and to finish as
runners up with a 1 point lead over Manchester United was a great achievement. Luther
Blissett was top scorer with 27 goals. Manchester City were relegated despite spending £5m,
along with Brighton and Swansea.
Manchester United won their first trophy under Ron Atkinsons management as they picked up
the FA Cup beating Brighton 4-0 in the replay. Liverpool completed the double as they picked
up the league cup. In the European Cup, defending champions Aston Villa were beaten by
Juventus who went on to finish as runners up. The final took place at the Athens’ Olympic
stadium in Greece, where German side Hamburg went on to win 1-0.

SQUIRES GATE 12-3 EUXTON VILLA
Gate got off to a slow start in the cup as Euxton came out on the front foot. However a break away goal after 7 minutes from
Grundy was a sign of things to come. More end to end football resulted in chances for both teams, resolute defending from Gates
defenders provided a platform to build on for the forwards. An impressive half for Gate then continued as Grundy scored 3 more
within the half. The downside to the first half was a well taken finish by Euxton. Further goals were added by Luca Stefani, Connah
Trevelyan and Ethan Goulding.
Gate came out in similar fashion to last week in the second half, conceding two in quick succession. The first was from a cross was
tapped into the open goal and the second a finely struck free kick from Gates vote of Euxtons MoM. A reaction was needed to
prevent the pressure. That's what was got when Grundy scored his 5th and 6th of the game, this allowed Gate to control the game
more with Dimitri Jackson and Goulding shifting the play. Substitute Nathan Nicholas then scored two in a quick fire double.
Mackenzie Webster then scored a fine header from a Jack Robinson cross.
Although Grundy scored 6, Man Of The Match went to Luca Greenwood who impressed defensively throughout.
LYTHAM JUNIORS 2-5 SQUIRES GATE
A controlling performance in terms of possession but a battle for the first half was something gate haven't been used to. Plenty of
intent came from the left and right hand side through Josh Dolby-Armstrong and Luca Stefani.
Brogan Grundy did well leading the line on his own. But there was very little to show from the constant forward play except a
super strike from Dimitri Jackson that crashed off the crossbar and numerous corners because of good defending and good goal-
keeping. Second half was a contrast to the first half. There was an instant impact from Jack Robinson, scoring a fine individual
effort. A second was quick in coming with Ethan Goulding breaking into space and firing into the bottom right hand corner.
A similar fashion as recent weeks resumed when sloppy play at the back gave Lytham a chance that Harry Ahern was close to
keeping out. That sparked Gate back into action with Robinson scoring an identical goal to his first.
A free kick for Lytham was spilt by Ahern and Lytham tapped the ball into an open goal.
Then tempers flared when a late challenge ended up with Oscar Dugdale struggling with a head injury and argument occurred
between Robinson and the Lytham player in question.
BUT CAN YOU DO IT ON A COLD TUESDAY NIGHT IN STOKE?
There’s nothing worse than losing away from home on a cold Tuesday night. I’ve had many
awful experiences at Tuesday night games in my time watching Watford. The trip to Blackburn
in 2013 comes to mind, and it never was a glamorous tie. This was one was one to forget
though. A dull 90 minutes of football, looked like we were heading for a 0-0 and rightly so. But
up stepped Jordan Rhodes, who was there to head the ball into the top corner with 93 minutes
on the clock. That game just about sums up Tuesday night games for me. However, one of the
best performances I’ve seen was on a cold Tuesday night in...Hull.
Looking through Squires Gate’s results over the past three seasons and it’s clear to see that we
don’t have much luck on Tuesday night’s at all. Last season we played 9 league games on a
Tuesday night, and we only picked up 12 points out of a possible 27 and only won 3 of those.
The Good - Barnoldswick Town 1-3 Squires Gate
A strong Gate side featured Harry Dunn, Jack Sowerby and Alex Murphy as an attacking force.
After a goalless first half, and the best chance falling to Brett Ferguson, who fired over the bar,
Gate were going to have to step up their game. It was Barnoldswick who took the lead after
Gate lost possession from a throw in. Harry Dunn levelled for Gate after the keeper spilled Jack
Sowerby’s free kick. Defender Josh Westwood volleyed home from a corner and Gate took all 3
points.
The Bad - Squires Gate 2-3 Bamber Bridge (AET)
Squires Gate had earnt a replay after drawing away at Bamber Bridge in the FA Cup. Ferguson
headed the home side in front after just 15 minutes. Brigg equalised after half time from what
was a dubious penalty. Jack Sowerby was there again to put Squires Gate into a shock 2-1 lead
with half an hour on the clock. However, it was not meant to be for the ties minnows when
Bridge equalised for the second time 3 minutes later despite trying to park the bus. Fletcher
was there with 2 minutes to go, to deny Bridge a winner in normal time. Into the second half of
extra time, and Bridge eventually got their winning goal after a lucky deflection took the ball
past Ben Fletcher. A valiant effort from Squires Gate though as it took the Evo Stick Division
One side 210 minutes of football to go through to the next round.
The Downright Awful - Colne 3-0 Squires Gate
In my opinion, this is one of the worst performances in my time at Squires Gate. We went to
Colne on the back of a 7-2 win over Alsager Town, and looked to carry on a great run. The home
side were 5 places above Gate after taking 16 points from 10 games, and they had the better
start, having plenty of possession and looked confident on the ball. The ball was played straight
through the Gate defence to find Chris Anderson who opened the scoring. After the break, Tom
Berwick doubled the lead as he tapped the ball in from 6 yards. Squires Gate just weren’t doing
enough to even threaten the Colne goal, and it got worse for them as Danny Boyle latched on to
a goal kick to put the ball beyond Ben Fletcher.
Gate have been involved in some cracking Tuesday night games this season, but sadly only 1 has
gone our way. We have lost 4-3 to Atherton Collieries, 4-1 to Colne and 4-2 to Hull based side
Barton Town Old Boys in the FA Cup.
With only three Tuesday night games left for us this season, lets hope we can turn things
around and get 3 points on the board tonight!
WIGAN ROBIN PARK 2-3 SQUIRES GATE
Sat 12th April, 2014
Squires Gate travelled to Wigan Robin Park in what was
another important game in their quest for Premier League
survival. Having battled well against league leaders Norton
United the week before, Squires Gate arrived in Wigan full of
determination, and it was bottom side Wigan who started
the brighter side, a free kick just outside the area was saved
confidently by the returning Ben Fletcher, and again it was
Gate who had the best chance of the opening 15 minutes
when a clever ball played over the top to Jack Sowerby who
saw his shot tipped round the post.
At nearly 17 Minutes on the clock and a clearance from the Squires Gate defence was
returned to the pitch quickly, this left two Gate defenders out of position allowing
Stephen Milne to finish well for the home side on 17 minutes, It was again the home
side who had the next talking point, a ball played through the middle of the Gate de-
fence resulted in keeper Fletcher bringing down the Wigan attacker, Fletcher was
given a straight red card and the resulting penalty was converted past stand in goal-
keeper Andy Richards by Philip Howard on the 27th minute.
Into the second half and both teams looked equal with most of the play being battled
for in both midfields. It wasn't until the 66th minute that the breakthrough came, a
foul outside the box by a Wigan defender allowed the freekick to be delivered, the
freekick met the head of one of the Wigan defenders resulting in an own goal.
At 2-1 the goal seemed to raise the morale of the away side who went back on the
attack. The introduction of Billy Mckenna from the bench offered another attacking
threat, the striker looking full of confidence was bought down right in the corner of the
pitch, but the resulting free-kick couldn't find a man in blue. It was Mckenna again
whose clever run sent him through, but seemingly the keeper had it under control,
until a poor touch and re-bound from the keeper allowed Mckenna one on one to
finish well and slotted the equalising ball home on the 74th minute.
Gate full now of confidence, having come from 2-0
down with just 10 men carried on attacking looking
for the three points, and that man Billy Mckenna
again on the right who whipped in a perfect cross,
which was met by the head of sub James Washburn
