Glossop North End
The Gaffer
Good evening and welcome to The Royal British Legion Sta-
dium for tonight’s home league fixture against Glossop North
End FC. First of all may I welcome Glossop’s management team and all asso-
ciated with the club. I hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey home.
Despite what the score line suggests I was pleased with Saturday’s perfor-
mance and result. The game could have gone either way but overall I felt we
defended well and created enough chances to score at least a couple of goals.
We played a certain shape, particularly in the 1st half that required a lot of disci-
pline and I was happy with how each player carried out their duties. Tonight
however, is going to be a completely different test. Glossop are riding high both
in the league and cups. They have scored goals for fun all season and have
got the meanest defence in the league, conceding only 10 league goals all
season. If you take into account that we scored 2 of those goals back in Octo-
ber then scoring, let alone winning, is going to be a major challenge.
We’re currently on a good run ourselves, having only lost 1 in 18 games. So far
this season all squad members whether past or present have been fantastic.
They’ve given there all in everything we have done and I hope this continues.
I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home fixture

GATE RETURN TO WINNING WAYS AS MURPHY NETS TWICE
Squires Gate continued their good form in 2015 and record yet another home
win. This result means Gate have gone 17 games with only 1 loss which makes
today's 3 points just as important and sees Gate remain unbeaten in 2015. Gate
made two changes from Saturdays draw with St Helens, Chris Anderson and
Harry Dunn coming in for Brett Ferguson and Alex Colquhoun, who both dropped
to the bench.
Gate's opposition for the day, West Didsbury and Chorlton, are on a good run of
form there selves boasting a record of winning 3, drawing 2 and losing 1 of their
last six games.
The first half was largely dominated by the away side in which Gates back five
produced an impressive display. The highlight of the first half came when the ball
was scrambled of the line to deny a Didsbury goal. Both teams looked to get the
ball forward quickly but neither possessed the quality
to take the chances created. It wasn't until the 42nd
minute when the break through happened. Alex Mur-
phy bought down on the edge of the area and from
the resulting free kick he found the back of the net.
The Didsbury keeper will perhaps have been a little
frustrated with his efforts to keep the ball out as Mur-
phy's free kick seemed to go straight through him.
Gate will have been the happier side going in to half
time, it being fair to say that the goal came against
the run of play.
Half time Squires Gate 1-0 West Didsbury & Chorl-
ton
Into the second half and Gate came out a much better side every play-
er looked more motivated than in the first half. One thing that changed
in the second half was Gate's formation, Gate changing to four across
midfield allowing both Dunn and Mckendrick to move wider and
stretch the game.
The benefit of this was
clear to see when on the
64th minute Alex Murphy
found acres of space to
run into to finish well for
his and Gate's second of
the day.
Didsbury had the chance
to get a goal back late on but Ben Fletcher was more than equal to the
shot to make yet another fine save and to keep Gates clean sheet in-
tact. Gate weathered a late storm of pressure from Didsbury and saw
the game out by bringing Jack Cook on to sure up the defence and see
out the win and three points.
After the game Gate manager Dave McCann said; “I thought we were
below par in the first half. They controlled the game and physically
came out on top but we stuck in there and took our chance with the
set piece. We were better in the second half and asked more questions
of them. It was very pleasing to keep another clean sheet, it was an-
other good team performance.

FORTHCOMING FIXTURES
FAR FROM A BORE DRAW BUT GATE SETTLE FOR A POINT
Squires Gate stayed fifth in the league and claimed yet another point on the road. Gate
faced AFC Liverpool, a team they have already faced twice this season, both in the FA
Vase and the league. Liverpool were going through a rough patch of form as of late and
have picked up just 4 points in their last six games. They also boast the league's top
goal scorer, Ryan Cox, who has scored 21 goals this season.
Gate remained unchanged from Saturdays team that beat West Didsbury 2-0 the only
change coming on the bench where new signing Robbie Bromley could make his debut
after signing from Padiham.
It was the home team who were on top in the opening exchanges of the game and it was
clear to see after the first 10 minutes that this was going to be a close game. Gate had
their first chance on the 15th minute when Dunn's cross from the left found Alex Murphy
at the back post but his header didn't test the keeper and fell wide.
Gate seemed to be struggling with their usual passing game in the first half with their
quality of passing below par at times.
Gate had another chance 5 minutes later
when Alex Murphy was fouled on the
edge of the area. It was Murphy who
took the resulting free kick buy he could
only find the wall and when the ball fell to
Alex McKendrick but his shot went well
over the bar. Gate were unlucky not to
go ahead on 35 minutes Alex Murphy's
shot was pushed out by the goalkeeper
and deflected just wide by the defender.
The last chance of the first half fell to
AFC LIVERPOOL

Gate looked alot more positive in the second half of this game and
with just 5 minutes on the clock racked up 3 consecutive corners. Gate
though struggled to find the back of the net from any of the set pieces.
Gates next chance came on the counter, after Gate soaked up pressure
from the home side they struck on the break but Buchan's shot was
easily saved by the keeper. It was a tail of the two keepers in the space
of two minutes both making game winning saves to keep their teams
in the game.
The home side almost took the lead through Ryan Cox but Gate's Ben
Fletcher was more than equal to tip the shot over and keep Gate in the
game. It was then Liverpool's turn to defend Billy McKenna sent in be-
hind and his shot into the bottom corner looked destined to win Gate
the game but keeper Ryan Jones got a strong hand to the ball to de-
flect it wide. Gate had the last chance of the game and could have won
it the corner finding Westwood's head but his header fell wide of the
post.
After the game Gate manager Dave
McCann said; I thought it was a
very entertaining game despite the
score line. We kept our shape and
discipline really well especially in
the first half and worked hard to
make sure that they didn't have a
clean attempt on goal. Both keepers
pulled of a fantastic save towards
the end that probably would have
meant one of us would have gone
Glossop North End Founded in 1886, Glossop North End began by playing friendly amateur matches. They entered the
North Cheshire League in 1890 and introduced professional players in 1894. Their Chairman and
benefactor was local cotton magnate Sir Samuel Hill-Wood who later left to become Chairman of
Woolwich Arsenal. In 1898, on their third application, they were admitted to the Football League.
In their first season, by finishing runners-up to Manchester City, they won promotion to the Football
League Division 1. Unfortunately, they spent just one year in the division, the best victory being a 3-
0 result against Nottingham Forest.
Glossop played in League Division 2 until the end of the 1914/15 season, In 1908/09 reaching the
quarter finals of the FA Cup where they lost to Bristol City in a replay. They ceased playing during
the latter part of the First World War but were reformed by Oswald Partington MP, who had been
club captain in the 1890’s.
Between the wars the club played in the Lancashire Combination and the Manchester League, of
which they were champions in 1927/28. They also won the Gilgryst Cup on three occasions.
Matches again ceased during the Second World War, Glossop rejoining the Manchester League
afterwards. They won the Gilgryst Cup for a fourth time in 1949.
In 1955 they moved from their original ground at North Road to the present home at Surrey Street.
Since then they have played in the Lancashire Combination, the Manchester and the Cheshire
Leagues before becoming founder members of the North West Counties League in 1982.
Glossop have spent most of the time in the First (now Premier) division, although much of it was
spent at the lower end fighting against relegation, whilst the club itself fought for survival, victim of a
criminally corrupt owner in the 1980s. It was only the hard work of board members and supporters
kept the club afloat after the disgraced regime. There was a little success — the club was Man-
chester Premier Cup winners in 1997 and 1998, and Derbyshire Cup winners in 2000-01.
More recently though, things have improved for the Hillmen. 2008/09 saw the biggest day in the
history of the club after Steve Young & Terry Hincks’ side embarked on a terrific FA Vase run which
saw North End reach the final at Wembley. They played in every single round of the competition
leaving some fantastic memories for supporters along the way... none more dramatic than the
123rd minute equalizer in the semi-final against Chalfont St. Peter. This led to a penalty shootout
where the Hillman seized the opportunity to head down Wembley Way.
Whilst the final saw a disappointing result — losing 2-0 to Whitley Bay — the run awakened interest
in the Hillmen throughout the town. There is now a thriving Supporters Club, which has funded
makeovers to the ground and helped generate interest in the club home and away.
Manager Chris Willcock is the man appointed to the task, and he had a very exciting first season in
charge in 2013-14, taking the club to a 3rd place finish – it’s highest in the NWCFL – and a Derby-
shire Senior Cup Final. Optimism is high for 2014-15 and everyone at the club is hopeful that Glos-
sop North End can now realise plans for an exciting future as a club at the heart of the community.

Glossop North End:
The story so far...
PREVIOUS MEETINGS v GLOSSOP N.E
Saturday 6th April 2013
Squires Gate 2-2 Glossop North End
In this NWCFL encounter, it was a game of two halves. Gate started
the game brightly and mounted most of the early pressure on the
visitors. It was the hosts surprisingly who broke the deadlock from a
Max Rothwell penalty.
Glossop came out the better side in the second half, but soon found
themselves 2-0 down after 51 minutes. So the visitors now had a
mountain to climb with less then 40 minutes to do so. On the 65th
minute, Glossop pulled one back after a mix up in the Gate penalty
area which allowed McGregor to score. Squires Gate couldn’t hold
on to the lead and ended up conceding an equaliser.
Saturday 7th December 2013
Squires Gate 0-1 Glossop North End
This game was always going to be a tough ask for Dave
McCann’s young Squires Gate side. But for 70 minutes, the
game looked like it was winnable. The first half was equal
with the home side looking more solid then it had been in
previous games. Jack Sowerby was causing problems for
Glossop as he was running at their defence but unable to
find the breakthrough.
The second half saw a more determined Glossop, who
found their match winner on the 71st minute as Kieran Lugs-
den pounced on a defensive mistake to win it for Glossop.
Saturday 25th January 2014
Glossop North End 5-1 Squires Gate
A month on from the home fixture, Gate travelled down to
Glossop. Again, it was going to be a tough fixture for Gate
but it was them who took the lead after 7 minutes through
Charlie Russell. However, Glossop North End had picked up
25 points from nine games and were soon back into the
game. The second half saw North End gaining a lot more
confidence and this reflected in the final score as Kieran
Lugsden and Tom Bailey played a part in their five goals
scored in the second half.

Editor's View
Good Evening and welcome to The Royal British Legion Stadium for today’s NWCFL encounter with
Glossop North End. The original game was supposed to take place last month but the game was
postponed due to severe weather and a waterlogged pitch. But since then, Squires Gate have contin-
ued their fantastic run of form that has now been extended to 18 games with only one loss.
Funnily enough, it was after the game against Glossop at the start of October that started the record
breaking run and hopefully it won’t end today. In that game, Squires Gate started the match well and
actually took a two goal lead through Jack Sowerby. However, Glossop showed their resilience and
pulled the game back around to win 3-2. On that note, speaking of two goal leads, what happened to
Blackpool on Saturday? Being a Watford fan myself, I was shocked at the half time result and would
of taken a draw, but then was over the moon with the final result which was 7-2 for those who didn’t
know. Sorry Blackpool fans.
Today’s opponents are also on their own run, and have an identical record to Squires Gate of losing
once in 18 games in all competitions. However, the visitors have bagged near enough 3 times the
amount of goals, including 6-0 wins over Colne and West Didsbury, and a 5-0 win over Bootle. They
clearly know where the goal is. Top scorer Kieran Lugsden will also be looking to add to his tally of 21
goals today, with a good record of finding the net against Gate.
It is set to be a very entertaining game here tonight, and I’m sure both sides will be wanting to take
maximum points. I hope all supporters, players and committee of Glossop North End have a safe
journey home.
Enjooooooy the game!
NWCFL NEWSLETTER
Glossop North End are now the League's sole representatives in the FA Carlsberg
Vase, after a terrific 1-0 win in their 4th Round tie at Worksop Town.
An extra time goal from Jason Carey earned victory for the Hillmen, and they will
now face Dunston UTS of the Northern League at Surrey Street on Saturday 7th
February.
However, the League's other representatives in the competition, Chadderton,
bowed out after a 5-0 home defeat to AFC Mansfield.
Elsewhere, there were plenty of other clubs going about the business of collecting
league points, and in the Premier Division, Runcorn Linnets took advantage of
Glossop's attention being focussed on cup glory by extending their lead at the top
of the table to 15 points.
However, they were made to work hard for a 2-1 win over Nelson at the Millbank
Linnets Stadium, with Mark Houghton grabbing the winner with just seven minutes
remaining.
Ashton Athletic stay in third place after a 2-2 draw at Bootle, although the Yellows
were 2-0 up through goals from Paul Watson and Isaac Kusaloska before the
Bucks staged a revival to earn a draw through a Jamie Hay strike and an own goal.
Runcorn Town were the day's highest scorers, with Paul Shanley and Curtis Cum-
mins both scoring twice in a 6-1 win at Barnoldswick Town, a result that keeps Bar-
lick in the bottom three.
