Good afternoon and welcome to The

Royal British Legion Stadium for this af-

ternoons home league fixture against

Winsford United FC. First of all may I

welcome Winsford’s management team and all associated with

the club. I hope you feel welcomed and have a safe journey

home.

Our results over the past few games have been inconsistent,

which reflect the way we have played over the course of those

games. We have been good in parts but in others parts we have

been below the standards we expect of ourselves. We need to

stay focused as much as we can during games and make sure

we prepare ourselves in the correct way both mentally and phys-

ically. We need to try and string a run of results together that will

pull us away from the bottom half of the table, which I feel is a

realistic target for us to aim for.

Today we face Winsford United who have a similar record to our-

selves and are probably looking to be more consistent as soon

as possible. All games in this league are tough and any team

has the potential to beat another. We will have to be just as

strong mentally and physically today if we are to gain the result

we want.

I hope you enjoy the game and visit us again for our next home

fixture.

Squires Gate 7-2 Alsager Town

The Royal British Legion Stadium

Attendance:

Saturday 20th September

Squires Gate entertained Alsager Town at School Road on Saturday hoping to bounce back in the league

after their FA cup exit at the hands of Bamber Bridge on Tuesday night. Gate made just one change from

that team with Andy Richards coming back in for Brett Ferguson.

Alsager made the brighter start in the game looking fired up, looking the more confident and having the

best of the possession in the opening stages. And it was also the away side who went ahead early on, a

mistake by Danny Penswick who's back pass let in Alsager attacker Josh Gordon in to finish well.

It took Gate until the 24th minute to equalise the scoreline, Sean Holmes hacked down on the edge of the

box and with the referee awarding a penalty, Alex Murphy stepped up to slot home. Gate looked threat-

ening and again got themselves on the score sheet Danny Penswick rising highest from the corner to put

the home side ahead. Gate who could have been ahead even further shortly after but Alex Murphy's

couldn't control the ball on the edge of the area, moments later Murphy had a chance to add another

goal to his tally but his header found the wrong side of the post. But on 40 minutes Gate would cement

their lead, tricky Harry Dunn using his lightening pace eased away past the defence and finish cleverly

slotted the ball past Kurasic the Alsager keeper.

Into the second half and there was a buzz around the ground after Gate had come back from one down to

be leading 3-1 many fans were expecting double figures. Gate started the sec-ond half like the finished

the first, the home side were first to every ball and clearly wanted the win more. The man of the first half

Alex Murphy could have added another goal to his collec-tion but his header was saved well by the Al-

sager goal keeper. It took Gate until the 60th mi-nute to add to their tally, Jake Forshaw meeting the ball

first to head past the on-rushing keep-er.

It would be Forshaw who would steal the headlines, the winger beating the offside trap before a com-

posed finish to make it 5 on the 75th minute. But the little winger wasn't done there, when on the 89th

minute he completed his hatrick from the penalty spot. Harry Dunn fouled on the edge of the box and

Forshaw was adamant to take the spot kick to make it six for the Gate. The visitors managed to pull an-

other back in between Forshaw's hatrick Josh Gordon getting his second of the day. But Gate weren't

done for the day yet!! and just a minute after Forshaw's penalty Ryan Riley rounded the keeper to make it

7 for the afternoon! Riley's goal means Gate scored seven goals for the first time this season and with five

different scorers. After the game manager Dave McCann said "Obviously I'm very pleased with the end

result but to be honest we took our time to get there. We were poor for the first 20 minutes of the game

and didn't apply ourselves like we know we can. The players were honest enough to re-alise that at half

time and took the game to them in the 2nd half. Everyone is playing their part at the minute and there's

good attitudes and spirit within the changing room. We know how hard we have to work to get results

and are currently playing well to gain them".

Tuesday 23rd September

Gate’s First Away Loss

Squires Gate travelled to Colne on Tuesday night hoping to continue on from there impressive 7-2 win against Alsager on Saturday. Gate made three changes, all en-forced from Saturdays side. The home side sat three points and five places above Squires Gate with 16 points from 10 games. It was the home side who started the brighter having plenty of possession early on looking confident on the ball. But it was Gate who had the first chance, an early cross in from Alex Murphy on the right almost caught out Colne keeper Thompson but he recovered well to tip the ball over the bar. Gates defence was cut in half by a pass through the middle of them which found Chris Anderson to give the home side the lead. Gate could have equalised soon after but the home sides goal keeper got down well to deny Hothersall at his feet. Gate were restricted to mostly long shots during the first half but couldn't capitalise from any of them with the home side first to very ball. The home side could have made it two late on but quick thinking from Chris Ander-son on the line after the ball rebounded of the bar saved Gate. Into the second half and it looked to be much like the first, the home side first to eve-ry ball not letting Gate time on the ball. Gate were made to pay on the 51st minute when the ball was fired across the 6 yard box to find an unmarked Tom Berwick at the back post to tap in the ball. This goal seemed to get to Gate and fired them up. It wasn't until the 60th minute that Gate really got going. Gate had many chances to get a goal back but Colnes defence stood tall and strong to deny them. Despite the efforts of subs Dickinson and Dunn get just couldn't find a way through. The night would get worse for Squires Gate as the home side added a third. The kick straight from the goal keeper came all the way though to the onrushing Danny Boyle who finished past keeper Ben Fletcher. Report by Mark Ashmore

Saturday 27th September

Squires Gate came back from 3 – 1 to score three-second half goals, to lift them up the table to 14th. They went behind after 4 minutes, and were caught out again after 12 minutes resulting Gate trailing 2-nil. The first goal followed Gate winning the first cor-ner of the game, the home clearance was picked up by Bacup’s Shaun Plummer who raced down the left, beating the Gate defence to score. Ten minutes later when the visitors had three consecutive corners, again the home sides clearance resulted in the second goal scored by B&RBFC's tricky striker Glodi Kuba-Kuba. It took a while for the visiting defence to settle and although they produced most of the pressure, it took 28 mins before Jack Sowerby began the fight back, with a characteristic race through the defence from forty yards out before slotting the ball past the keeper. Then on the half hour Borough scored a third, through Sam Crook, before, Jake Forshaw, reduced the deficit on the 32nd min. the teams went to the dressing rooms at the break wondering what the second half would produce.

It was Squires Gate that made most of the running, but on a couple of occasions Ben Fletcher, had to come to their rescue, and brought off a great right handed save turn-ing a shot past the post from the home sides striker, Glodi Kuba-Kuba, playing his sec-ond game for Bacup. As a result of a move down the left Harry Dunn pushed the ball through the defence, to Jack Sowerby, who slipped it in front of Alex Murphy, and he gave the home keeper no chance, shooting into the bottom right hand corner, to put the Gate level on three goals each. Both teams put everything into taking the three points, but leading scorer Jack Sower-by, back after missing the midweek visit to Colne, raced onto a long ball down the mid-dle, and beat defence to score his second of the day, giving the home keeper no chance as his shot went low into the corner of the net, for the winner, taking three points back to School Road.

Manager Dave McCann, said after the game, “It was a rollercoaster of a game, we did-n’t help ourselves with the way we defended in the first half but every credit to the lads in gaining 3 points. Bacup is never an easy place to go to and the character and spirit the players displayed underpins what we have at the Gate at the moment”. He added, “They’re an honest bunch of players and are big and honest enough to realize when they need to improve. They did that in the second half and deserved their 3 points “.

Match Preview

Good afternoon and welcome to the Royal British Legion Stadium, for this NWCFL fixture be-

tween Squires Gate and Winsford United. Well, back to mid September for our last home match,

where Squires Gate hosted mid table side Alsager Town. Hit by an early goal, Gate were deter-

mined to turn things around and that’s just what they did, winning by SEVEN goals to 2.

After that, we had a trip down to Colne on a wet and cold Tuesday night. Gate had 3 key players

out for this game including top scorer, Jack Sowerby, Josh Westwood and Ryan Riley. And this

showed when Colne’s forceful attacks eventually were rewarded by a goal. The second half was

also more or less one sided. Gate unable to produce anything from their chances and Colne

scored 2 more to round off the night. So a defeat on the back of great victory the weekend be-

fore.

We then travelled to relegation fighters Bacup, looking to turn results around after the 3-0 defeat

to Colne. Gate went 3-1 down within 25 minutes. Jake Forshaw sparked a comeback 3 minutes

later as Gate trailed 3-2 at halftime. Great team spirit in the second half as Gate fought well and

managed to walk away with 3 points, winning the game 4-3.

A tough game followed as Gate travelled to Yorkshire in an attempt to take 3 points from high fly-

ers Glossop North End. Starting well and taking a 2-0 lead, but Glossop pulled 1 back just before

the break. Into the second half, and Glossop were too strong as they eventually went on to win

the game 3-2.

Last weekend, Gate travelled down to Brocstedes Park, for their game with St Helens. A very

slow start, and not a lot of chances in the first half, and the second half was almost a repeat as

the game went on to end 0-0.

Winsford head into today’s game on the back of a 2-2 draw away to AFC Liverpool. Last time

these 2 sides met, Gate went away with the 3 points in a 2-1, at the start of this year. Winsford

striker Kyle Riley has bagged 7 goals already this season, one less then Jack Sowerby.

There has only been 5 games played between these two sides here at The Royal British Legion

Stadium. Squires Gate winning 3 of them, Winsford only winning 1 of them. However, Winsford

have thumped Gate In 2 meetings at the Barton Stadium, 4-1 back in the 2012/13 and 5-0 back

in the 2011/12 season.

Both teams go into today’s game with an inconsistent run of form, winning only 2 of their last 6

games. Squires Gate have a good home form, winning 3 of their last 6 games at home. Winsford

have only won 1 of their last 6 games away from home, so Squires Gate will be hoping to take

advantage today.

Squires Gate are without midfielder Billy McKenna. But Alex McKendrick should return for today’s

game.

We would like to thank everyone for their continued support, and for attending today’s game. We

hope you have a safe journey home. Be sure to come and get one of our delicious meat & potato

pies from the bar.

Enjooooooy the game!

Winsford United

Winsford United have a long and proud history, having been formed way back in 1883. In

those early days, the club was called. United became a Limited company and the

1950’s saw the glory days on Non-League football when crowds of over 3000 were the

norm. In 1959 Winsford won the Cheshire Senior Cup against Ellesmere Port Town in front

of a 12,000 crowd at Gresty Road. . In 1974 they reached the Senior Cup final again, this

time against the then-mighty Macclesfield Town. The final was an epic with three replays

and the Silkmen only clinching it after extra time in the fourth match. All the ties were

played in front of crowds of over 3,500.

The Blues won the Cheshire Senior Cup again in 1980 with a 4-1 victory over local rivals

Witton Albion. The goalkeeper in that final was Neville Southall who was then was sold to

Bury for£6,000. A sell on clause later netted United a club record figure of around £30,000

when he moved to Goodison Park.

The club was given a boost during the summer of 1996 when they received nearly

£90,000 from the sale of Wayne Collins to Sheffield Wednesday from Crewe Alexandra.

Three seasons later under the management of Dalton Steele, The club received another

tremendous boost early in 1999 when goalkeeper Andy Oakes who had signed for Hull

City for a modest fee but with a 25% sell-on clause was signed by Derby County for

£480,000 giving Winsford a record amount for a Non-League sell-on clause. The board of

directors were determined that this money was to be spent sensibly on improving the in-

frastructure of the club, the first move being to install Football League standard flood-

lights.

The Club appointed former Flixton Manager Lloyd Morrison with Kevin Bircumshaw re-

maining as his Assistant.

E.ON adopted the club for their 2013 Community Project and carried out a great refur-

bishment of the facilities including a new toilet block, a first aid suite and help in restoring

the floodlights. However, with everything in place for a serious assault on the league title

and over £20,000 spent on improving the facilities and pitch, the club was rocked when

two weeks before the start of the season Lloyd Morrison announced he was going to

Ones To Watch

Andy Jones - Goalkeeper

The number one at Winsford this season and has been in impressive

form, keeping five clean sheets and conceding 16 goals. Andy has been

at the club for three seasons now and has also played for Glossop and

Stafford Rangers.

Alex Bryne - Defender

A young defender at 21 years old originally from the Peak District. Alex

has been in impressive form recently and clearly poses a threat from de-

fence scoring 2 goals in the league so far.

Kyle Riley - Attacker

Kyle is a big strong striker with a terrific touch for a big man. His former

clubs include Burnley, Oldham Athletic, CF Frederico Mayo and Ashton

United. Kyle has been in fine form so far scoring seven goals in the league.

Mark Ashmore gives us his views on who he thinks will be the ones to watch in today’s

game.

Last Time Out

Gate 2-1 Winsford United

After holding a one minutes silence in

respect for an old Squires Gate keeper

"Jack the Cat" "JD" Jack Drinkwater

who sadly passed away just after the

xmas period.

Gate kicked off in search of their first

win since playing table topping Maine

Road at the start of November last

year.

With six wins in their last six outings

the visitors to The Royal British Legion could be forgiven for thinking a seventh win

was on the cards against a Gate side who'd not won for over two months but with

just 20 seconds of the game gone they found themselves one nil down.

Jack Sowerby pushed the ball into space down the right hand side and delivered a

pin point cross for Zach Clark to tap in at the back post.

Winsford’s first chance of note came on 20 minutes with a goal mouth scramble but

Gate man-aged to clear the danger away. 3 minutes later Gate's Jamie Gibson

found space on the edge of the area, Winsford keeper Nathan Beckett pulling of a

fine save to deny Gibson.

Beckett produced a superb save on 42 mins, this time diverting Billy McKenna's ef-

fort onto the crossbar and away for a corner. Winsford almost equalised just on half

time but for Gate keeper Dave Rogerson putting off

his opponent who skied his volley when he should

really have done better.

Into the second half and after soaking up Winsford

attack for ten minutes the away side finally broke

through. David Gremie finding himself in space 35

yards out, he looked up and let off a low pile driver

beating Rogerson to make it one all.

Rogerson pulled off two fine saves to deny the visi-

tors taking the lead and how valuable those saves

Runcorn Town's interest in the FA Cup ended at the 3rd Qualifying Round stage as they

slumped to a disappointing 5-2 home defeat to Norton United at the Pavilions.

Town got off to a perfect start when Danny Toone's free kick ended up in the back of the

net via a defenders boot, but two goals before half time from Kyle Diskin and Lee Cropper

gave the visitors the advantage at half time.

Chris Lester brought Town back in to the game with an equaliser seven minutes into the

second half, but the lead lasted only three minutes before Paul Taylor put Norton ahead

again, and a second goal from Cropper and a last minute penalty from Tom Fogg ensured a

place in Monday's draw for last season's NWCFL Premier Division Champions.

Elsewhere, the focus was on collecting league points, and in the Premier Division Runcorn

Linnets extended their lead at the top of the table with a comfortable 3-0 win at Bacup &

Rossendale Borough, Matthew Atherton scoring twice.

With Glossop inactive, both 1874 Northwich and AFC Liverpool joined them on 32 points in

joint second place.

A goal in the 68th minute by Michael Brandon gave 1874 a 1-0 win at Colne, and goals

from Ryan Cox, Francis Barry and a penalty from Ronnie Morgan saw AFC Liverpool

through to a 3-1 win over West Didsbury & Chorlton.

Ashton Athletic are in fifth place, with goals in each half from Adam Gilchrist and Nathan

Martland earning them a 2-1 win at Winsford United, and Maine Road are sixth after being

held to a 2-2 draw at home to Stockport Sports.

Josh Harper and Richard Williams scored twice in two minutes to establish a two goal lead

for Road, but Ryan Humphreys and Ellis Brownlow earned the Saxons a point.

A Steven Williams goal was enough to see Bootle through to a 1-0 win over Slisden, St

Helens Town and Squires Gate cancelled each other out in a goalless draw at Brocstedes

Park, and the other three games all ended in 2-1 wins for the home sides.

Squires Gate travelled to St Helens this weekend looking to improve on

Saturdays close 3-2 defeat to Glossop where Gate were 2-0 up. Gate

made two changes to the team with new signing Mark Buchan coming in

for Sam Dickinson and Harry Dunn coming in for Steven Eyangobwanga.

Gate made a good start early on with Jake Forshaw going close. Gate

looked the better side in the first 20 minutes and had the St Helens

Keeper not pulled of a top quality save from Harry Dunns low drive then

Gate would and should have been one up. It was the home side who

ended the first half the better a top draw save from Ben Fletcher keeping

Gate in the game, the home side ended the first half bossing the game.

Into the second half and Gate had the first chance, a good first time ball

over the top to find the run of Jack Sowerby but the last man for St

Helens managed to clear the ball away. From the resulting corner St

Helens managed to launch a counter attack down the other end and had

it not been for a quality one handed save from Ben Fletcher the home-

side would have been one up. Sub Hothersall looked to make an impact

on the 70th minute but his run and cross down the right couldn't be con-

verted by Jack Sowerby. This was probably the best chance of the game

for Gate who were described as missing there usual creativity and quali-

ty when going forward.

After the match Squires Gate manager Dave McCann said: I thought a

draw and no goals for either side tells the story. We looked solid defen-

sively which is really pleasing but we never did enough to score and win

the game. We lacked our usual creativity and quality when going for-

ward, having said that a clean sheet and a point away from home is al-

ways pleasing.

Saturday 4th October

Squires Gate travelled to Yorkshire to visit second in the league Glossop North End.

Gate looking to continue the good form that saw them come from 2-0 down against

Bacup on Saturday to turn it around and win 4-3. Gate made one change from Satur-

days win with Steven Eyangobwanga coming in to make his debut for the unavailable

Harry Dunn. It was a fairly open start to the game with both teams having early

chances. Glossop though had the better chances and forced Gate to sit in and defend

for long periods of the first half. Glossop could have been ahead with 20 minutes

gone the home side finding themselves four on three but the cut back ball was fired

over the bar and Gate were let off. Gate looked spurred on by this missed opportuni-

ty and started fighting and wanting the ball more. Gate managed to clear the ball for-

ward to the feet of Jack Sowerby who laid the ball off to Alex Murphy who cleverly

played it back over the top to the run of Sowerby. Sowerby turned past two defender

and rocketed the ball past the helpless goalkeeper to open the scoring for Squires

Gate. Gate again looked to attack the homeside with the impressive Eyangobwanga

running down the left hand side his cross found Alex Murphys head who found the

back of the net to make it two for Squires Gate. Gate would have been very happy to

go into half time two up but couldn't hold on. Suspicions of offside as the ball was

played along the face of goal for the unmarked Glossop man to tap in at the far post

to give the home side one back going into half time.

Into the second half and the home side had definitely been on the end of a roasting in

the break. The home side looked a completely different team. It was a defensive error

that cost Gate with the home side pulling the game level early into the second half,

Gate didn't get the favourable bounce of the ball after Penswick's clearance hit off

the Glossop attacker who capitalized to even up the game. Gate just couldn't get go-

ing in the second half and were described as never coming out of the dressing room

by manager Dave McCann in the second half. Gates day was made worse as the

home side took the lead the ball fired in from the edge of the box to beat keeper

Fletcher. After the game manager Dave McCann said: I thought we did well in the 1st

half, we reduced them to half chances, defended well and scored 2 good gaols. We

let ourselves down in the second half and never came out of the changing rooms. We

haven't played as poorly that all season and it cost us. The lads are disappointed con-

sidering the position we were in during the game but that's an indication how far

we've come from last season.

In Remembrance Albert Hamer

Albert Hamer aged 83, passed away recently. He was Squires Gate’s for-

mer first team coach for many years, and a long serving member of the

club.

A well known referee, he was a trainer to many local clubs, and was award-

ed a 50 year service award by the Lancashire Football Association, for his

devotion to football in the country.

“A regular at Gate’s matches until recently, his knowledge of football will be

missed/.” said Brian Addison, Squires Gate’s award winning groundsman,

who had the pleasure of working alongside Albert, lifting the club through lo-

cal football leagues, to their present position to play in the Premier Division

of the North West Counties Football League.

The funeral was held on Wednesday 24th September, at Carlton Cemetery

Blackpool at 12:30pm.

Players from both teams at the game between Squires Gate and Alsager

Town, along with spectators, stood in 2 minutes of silence before kick off, as
