Some days back, an acquaintance of mine casually asked: Whats your favourite theme? Upon hearing it, I was honestly stumped. As I searched through my mind for an obvious answer, I realised I had none despite being in the interior scene for almost six years. That, for me, was a moment of epiphany.

With local homeowners becoming more accepting of unconventional and outrageous themes, there are honestly, many interesting styles emerging in the homes on our sunny shores. Many people are finding their own identities through their homes and that could be the reason why I cant just pinpoint a really specific theme to love.

If you are, like me, unsure of what theme, out of so many glorious styles, is your favourite, might we offer you some clarity in this months issue. April is all about themes, if youve guessed by now, and weve collated a wonderful spread of styles (Bare Basics, page 19) for you to steal. We have also segregated it by country (Look, page 36) so you can draw inspiration from either picturesque Greece or romantic Paris.

It is also our Colour special so get some foolproof tips (Month by Month, page 14) on how to really dress up your space with colour. Or if you believe in Fengshui, Fengshui master Kenny Hoo has dished out his top tips for auspicious colours for 2014 (Expert Advice, page 50).

So, get going and well see you again next month!

As Duluxs Colour of the Year 2014, a lot can be said about teal. This deep blue-green tinge is reinvigorating, therapeutic, inviting and is said to help open up communication and clarity of thought. Being such an all-encompassing colour, it is little wonder it can embrace different types of themes too. Take for instance, it can effortlessly accommodate the resort look, nostalgic and mid century modern styles in this living-dining space.

Give your dinnerware plates, bowls and cups, a makeover by simply stacking them and coordinating them by their hues. Place the strongest hues on the top and middle shelves and alternate them with your neutrals and whites.

Throws and cushions are probably the easiest and fastest way to give your couch character. Dress up those cotton hugs in fashionable plaid patterns, colour blocks or in experimental neon animal prints.Featuring Lima Throw, S$299.95; Kipton Pillow, S$80.95, all from Crate & Barrel

Black might seem like the antithesis to this entire article about adding colours to your home but it is also the most versatile colour to clarify the existing colours in your home. For example, you can use black cushions as an accent against your white/ neutral coloured seatings or use a black photo frame to highlight your images.

DALED lights have an edge over traditional fluorescents and bulbs for their energy saving and low maintenance benefits. They also have more colour versatility as well. Try incorporating one into your headboard or on top of it as a light-changing and mood-altering cove light.

The bed is usually where most of us end up making disastrous choices of crazy patterns and awkward colour hues. Some experts swear by the 80-20 rule while others abide by the 60-30-10 rule. The trick really, for us colour noobs, is to reduce the number of colours used e.g. sheets in light colours, pillows in bright accent colours.Featuring Dottie bedding, from S$79.95, from Crate & Barrel

ground controlTheres a new kid on the block in the flooring industry and its getting as popular as laminate and vinyl. Meet HERF

HERF, short for High End Resilient Flooring, is fast gaining popularity among local homeowners. It is said to be an affordable flooring option that promises comfort, durability, and easy maintenance, even in high-traffic areas. Some homeowners are even using it in wet zones like the kitchen and bathroom. We find out more about this flooring type and how it compares to the rest.

What is High End Resilient Flooring

    (HERF)?

High End Resilient Flooring is a type of synthetic flooring in the Resilient Flooring family, which includes linoleum and vinyl. Resilient flooring is constructed with material that has some elasticity, giving the flooring a degree of flexibility called resilience.

    AS

    Des

    ign

MaintenanceThe level of maintenance that HERF supposedly requires is quite low. Regular sweeping or vacuuming is sufficient to keep the floor clean and looking good.

As HERF is waterproof, theres no need to worry about the rain coming in and wetting your floors when you forget to close the windows. Nevertheless, HERF is still considered indoor flooring and should not be installed outdoors. Prolonged exposure to the sun may cause it to experience colour tonality changes.

In addition, it has a ceramic-beaded wear layer which gives its surface a high resistance to scratches; especially from pets or when you move furniture pieces around the room.

Comfort & safetyLike other resilient flooring types, HERF is comfortable to walk on and provides good impact resistance. In the events of falls, the impact is cushioned by the resilience of the flooring and the injury could likely be reduced.

HERF is also certified to have a high level of slip resistance, making it a suitable flooring option for young children and the elderly. It is said to be not slippery even when its wet, a feature that is drawing many homeowners to use this in the kitchen since its also waterproof!

Due to its material composition, HERF is odourless and passes health standards tests by being low in VOC (volatile organic compounds) emission.

Design & appearanceAs of now, HERF can emulate the look of wood, marble, granite and pebbles. The wood design of HERF imitates the grains and colour of actual wood very closely, with beveled edges and an embossed surface to create the wood-like feel and appearance.

However this is a relatively new product in Singapore, the range of designs that homeowners can choose from is rather limited. It pales in contrast especially when compared to laminate flooring designs which can vary from thousands of patterns and colours.

LifespanHERF is believed to be reusable. Due to the installation method, homeowners can actually dismantle the flooring and then bring it along with them when they move to a new home. This would mean that you wouldnt need to spend money on new flooring again when you upgrade to another place. Reusing your flooring also allows you to do your bit for the environment.

For residential usage of HERF, homeowners are given a lifetime warranty of 20 to 30 years depending on the individual product.

InstallationUsing a direct overlay system, HERF is installed with an interlocking mechanism without any glue or underlay.

  • 33APR

For the HERF that Evorich carries, it has to have at least a R9 Standard of slip resistance, uses a click locking system instead of adhesives or glue for installation, passes tests for low levels of formaldehyde emission and other certifications.

The three important ones that consumers can use easily to recognise a HERF product is firstly, the thickness of the flooring board. It needs to be at least 5mm thick. Secondly, the product should be odourless. To be sure, check for certification of low VOC emission. Thirdly, look out for its slip-resistance properties.

Wood LookMany local households love the look of wood at home but rather than install actual wooden flooring or parquet, they prefer to have a flooring type that is easier to upkeep. As such, laminate and vinyl

At a glance, high end resilient flooring products seem very similar to vinyl tiles. We ask Jacky Tan, Head of Marketing at Evorich Flooring Group, how we can differentiate between the two.

efficient than an AC one.Retailing at Gain City

System typeThere are generally two types of air conditioning system: window air conditioner and the split system.

Window air conditioner Technically called a unitary air conditioning system, it consists of a self-contained air conditioning unit that is placed in a window or through a hole in an exterior wall. This is an affordable option for homes that need air conditioning only in one room.

Split systemThe split system breaks the air conditioning system into two packages the indoor unit and the outdoor compressor, with refrigerant tubing passing through the wall to connect the both. Some models come with multiple indoor units that will use one single compressor; this is known as the multi-split air conditioning system.

The split system is favoured by many homeowners as the installation of the air conditioner is not restricted to the exterior walls. It also allows them to place the outdoor compressor at a more convenient area.

Inverter air conditioners are usually considered more energy-efficient than their non-inverter counterparts. This is because they are able to operate at partial load, which is a common scenario in a typical household where not all the indoor units are switched on at the same time. In such cases, inverter AC units can help you to save on your electrical bills. However, it will not make much difference at full load, when all the units are switched on for the whole day.

Clean the surface of the object to remove dust and dirt. This will provide an even surface for the paint to stick to. Also, be sure the surface is dry before beginning to paint.

It is recommended to paint or decorate the Centre sector of your home and office to boost academic progress and business prosperity. This can help to improve creative thinking abilities too.

Do not place aquariums and avoid renovating this area. Also, avoid red, yellow and brown to trigger negative energies. Instead, paint it blue or white to ward off ill effects.

SouthWith the Wealth Star residing here, painting a feature wall in light yellow or brown can harness the positive energy and bring greater fortune.

EastPainting your wall with a combination of green and blue hues in the Eastern region will help to improve family health and fortune. This decreases the negative energy of the number two Black Star, which will bring about sicknesses.

SoutheastIs the family always bickering? Painting a wall in purple or other reddish hues can help prevent arguments and legal issues.

North Paint a feature wall here in green and mix it with purple or red. Applicable for both your home and office. Since green can help boost the positive qi of the number 9 Purple Star found in the north area, it can promote good health, wealth, harmony and prosperity.

There are many perks of being a bachelorette, and one of the biggest ones when renovating is being able to fashion your home in any style you fancy. So when it came to renovating this four-room HDB flat in Bishan, the only person that the designers had to cater for was the homeowner and her two precious dogs. In order to reconfigure the space so that it would flow better and suit the

homeowners needs explicitly, most of the walls were torn down. In fact very little of the original floor plan was left untouched.

The kitchen and dining room were reconfigured to create one large open concept space. In order to emphasise the full expanse of space here, one entire wall is covered in wallpaper. A bold move was taken by the designers to add the track lighting on the walls instead of the ceiling, in order to further emphasise the space expanse and ceiling height. Not wanting to stop the design process there, the inventive designers chose to create a stunning design on the floor that really anchors the entire space together. Homogeneous tiles in a variety of three monochromatic shades were cut to size and carefully laid on the floors to create an eye-catching display that gives this space its distinctive design lines. But it is the open concept black tinted glass encased bathroom that really takes the cake here.

The ample use of black tinted glass gives the bathroom a sophisticated touch but doesnt close up the room or make it feel any smaller than it should. Just outside the black glass encased bathroom are laminate finish wardrobes, with a large single sliding panel put into place so the wardrobe area can be enclosed if required. The result is a seamless fusion of space within the master bedroom with a keen attention to detail that allows this bachelorette homeowner to really take ownership of her space.

    smart and savvy

Taking design ingenuity to the next stage is the savvy storage units in this modern

    Scandinavian resale apartment unit

LIVING AREAFor the simple Scandinavian look, a matching wooden coffee table and fabric sofa from AIR Division were chosen to complete the living space.

    UPCLOSE

Stylish sliding panels keep the entertainment storage unit looking clean and neat.

With its clean lines, woody finishes and open-concept layout, this family home extends a warm welcome at first sight. It is Scandinavian yet modern. Its this look that the homeowners wanted and their commissioned designers from interior design studio, Story of Us, nailed it.

The brief was clear: An understated Scandinavian style. Besides specifying this to the Story of Us design team, the married couple also requested for more storage and an open concept layout. This is evident in their brand new spectacular semi open-plan bathroom which overlooks the master bedroom.

In the public zones, more storage space is created in the dining, living and dry kitchen. In fact, the lofty storage units are design features themselves which ground the overall modern Scandinavian look. Taking precedence in the dining area is the bookshelf-display unit. As the couple and their two young daughters have amassed many books and knick-knacks, this eye-catching storage and design fixture is just the solution to showcase their collections. Elevating its functionality is a sliding panel in wood grain laminate affixed in the middle of the storage fixture, which can be pushed to either side for access to the closed storage compartment.

DINING AREA (opposite page)With the custom-built storage-display unit as the main feature, mismatched dining chairs were added to play up the colour scheme of black and brown.

Another smart storage and design fixture is the boxy-looking entertainment unit in the living space. Hidden and closed shelving compartments offer ample storage space for entertainment peripherals while louvered sliding panels at the bottom house the home entertainment devices. In the middle of it all, a recessed area helms the flat screen TV.

To make up for the lack of a storeroom, the designers from Story of Us also had to turn to ingenious ways to store bulkier items, like say the homeowners bicycles. The original idea was to install a metal bike storage pole, but the designers felt that it would not be in line with the

overall design theme. Instead, they proposed wall-mounted bike shelves which are a contemporary alternative to the industrial-looking pole. Finished in the same laminate as the other carpentry works, these bike shelves form part of the dcor in the living room and provides a space to hold the helmets too.

Originally part of the wet kitchen, the dry kitchen with the bar counter was created by taking down the walls that enclosed it. Besides being an ideal space for entertaining, the dry kitchen provides a space for the missus to do baking with her two little girls. To facilitate this, the design team installed the oven out here

Dont be afraid of painting one wall in a dark colour. It provides contrast among all the other light-coloured walls and can turn into a design statement.

Using the same laminate pattern for different carpentry works throughout the whole apartment helps to ensure design consistency.

The entrance to the wet kitchen is moved a short distance back, and a swing door with a vertical light slot is added. This keeps cooking fumes contained within the cooking quarters while allowing light to flow through.

The warm and relaxed atmosphere is continued on in the bedrooms. With an open-concept bathroom that the couple requested for, the master bedroom becomes a spacious and airy cocoon. The bathroom walls were hacked away and replaced with clear glass panels. The

designers installed roller blinds which can be used whenever needed. Since the width of the bathroom allows room for a lengthy vanity counter, the couple was also given the luxury of double vanity sinks with plenty of countertop space. A wall-mounted mirror spans the entire wall above the sinks, visually enlarging the space. The combination of these and the simple wooden furnishings make the master bedroom truly a hotel-worthy retreat for its lucky occupants.

COSY CORNER (right)Privy to the green foliage outside, this little nook is the perfect place for contemplation.

Apart from spanning more than 2,000 square feet of space, which is a great deal of room in new homes of today, this resale condominium unit also has other things working in its favour. The ground level unit boasts a lovely patio shrouded by lush greenery, and is situated in one of the prime locations in the East. In short, it provides a perfect space for a budding family, and this is exactly why its homeowners, a young married couple, decided to call it home.

The homeowners wanted the industrial and rustic feel, says Innovation Division Manager Christopher Lum from Distinct Identity, their commissioned designer.

We also took time to discuss with them to understand their needs. Through the understanding of their requirements, we then looked into restructuring the spaces to make it flow better.

keyideasGot a structural fixture that cannot be demolished? You dont have to blend it into the space. Instead, turn it into a focal point like these folks with their chalkboard structural beam.

If you are planning to create a customised storage unit, play with covered and open shelving for a visually engaging look. The width of each column can vary from the other, but do consider your storage needs carefully before its construction.

To bring more definition to kitchen cabinets, add a base strip in a contrasting colour underneath the kitchen countertops.

If you are concerned about the maintenance of wood flooring, homogenous tiles that look like wood panels are a great alternative. Go for rough-hewn finishes for the raw, industrial look.

LIVING AREA (below)In a light shade of grey, the laminate shelving emulates the look of cement screed, adding to the ongoing industrial flavour.

KITCHEN (opposite page)Previously an unsightly column, the structural pillar is now a piece of chalkboard wall with a gorgeous, grainy effect.

The pillar was challenging because it was important to get the mix of cement and water right to achieve a certain effect. We also roped in the homeowners during the process so that they could tell us exactly how they wanted the wall to look like, Christopher recalls. It was a collaborative process that proved to be satisfying for the homeowners and designer.

With various textures introduced, built-in carpentry units were all clad with the same laminate to unify the look. There are also interesting additions that would appeal to those who love details. For example, the kitchen countertops were mounted onto base

One of the things the team did was to open up the kitchen area. The walls confining the kitchen were duly removed. With that, the visual flow becomes uninterrupted, from the patio, through the living and dining areas, to the kitchen.

A pillar that cannot be demolished, however, has been left intact. While most people would try to blend it into the interior design, the couple wanted it turned into a focal point. As it turned out, however, it took a lengthy process of trial and error to get this right. First painted entirely in black, it was later finished with cement screeding on three sides.

A new wall, reconstructed with cement blocks, backs the bed. The roughness of the white cement on the wall adds a rich texture thats complemented by the two low-hanging industrial lights. fusion between natural wood elements and sharp design lines to create a sophisticated but timeless home

LIVING AREA (opposite page)A dark stained stone veneer feature wall accentuates the presence of the space and creates that raw, organic appeal.

WALKWAY (right)This home boasts a daring linear ceiling feature that links the private and public spaces together.

Make no mistake about it; this home has an undeniable charm. Whether it is the incredible fusion of raw and polished surfaces, the clever attention to detail in colour usage and form, or the gallery like atmosphere it invokes, we just cant get enough of the sophisticated yet versatile design lines.

The couple who calls this place home often entertains large groups of people, so the immediate need to have a spacious, conducive area to host friends was of utmost importance. In order to cater to this vital lifestyle need and maximise space in the home, Interior Architect Stephen Goh suggested breaking down the boundary walls between the guest room and the living/ dining area. This would open up the area perfectly but the need for a guestroom was also part of the plan. As such, he created an ingenious sliding door screen that could easily be moved into place when the room was required by guests. The sliding door can also be slid out of the way in order to enlarge the dining/ living room, whenever more space is required. Double happiness all around!

Since the couple are big fans of natural materials, Stephen crafted out a dining area with an L-shaped feature wall in oak wood strips to create a naturally warm environment. The oak wood feature wall with a sneaky mirrored element was specifically stained to match the custom designed laminate dining bench that boasts hidden storage and a removable seat as well. This is matched with a glass top dining table and another matching bench seat to keep the design lines clean and sharp.

The TV is placed against this gorgeously textured wall with a simple yet poised upholstered settee complementing the space and adding a soft touch.

while leading the eye towards the full length display niche that hosts the couples precious sculptures. A cleverly designed L-shaped lighting system adds ample light to the space while pulling the entire design language together in one uniformed yet commanding approach.

The original floor plan featured direct entrance into the master bedroom. In order to create more privacy for the couple, the master bedroom entrance was instead relocated to the side. This ingenious move not only creates a better flow of space for the home but it now allows the master bedroom to take on two distinct zones.

keyideasEliminate clutter by creating hidden storage wherever you can. This home has hidden storage at the entrance foyer in the form of shoes cabinets and a dining bench seat.

In order to maximise space in the public spaces, the guest bedroom walls were knocked down and a sliding door screen was put into place instead.

A central storage and shelving system was created at the entrance area in order to segregate the two zones. One side of the bedroom now hosts a spacious study while the opposite side accomodates the main bedroom area. The ingenious central storage unit allows for a dual-storage system. The bedroom now features a wall-mounted TV and storage cabinets, while the study area benefits from extra storage and display space.

The design language stays consistent with a clever attention to detail, a good balance between dark and light surfaces and space maximising techniques at play. Bay windows are used for more woody sculptures and plenty of storage cabinets keep the entire home famously organised so the actual interior design can speak for itself.
