1 Message from our Principal, Ms Sam Penn Happy new year to all of you, and let’s hope all our hopes and plans for 2014 come to fruition. In particular, I wish the best of luck to all our students who are taking mock exams at the moment. Now we are past Christmas, time will seem to fly past until the summer exams, and I’m sure our GCSE students will be using the last of the winter weather as an excellent reason to stay in and work! This term we are revolutionising our rewards system using Vivo. Endeavour house points will be given a monetary value and can be spent on an online shop. We will be consulting students shortly about what items they would like to see available online, and I hope they will find the new system inspiring. Finally, I’d like to draw your attention to our Parent Forum. Mrs Baker meets with parents every half term to discuss matters like exams, reports and academy events. It’s an excellent chance to have your say over tea, coffee and cakes, and we would love to see you. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday 25 March 2014 at 6pm. Message from our Principal, Ms Sam Penn

Happy new year to all of you, and let’s hope all our hopes and plans for 2014 come to fruition.

Redgrave House

Engagement is one of the most important aspects of anybody’s success. If you are not interested or recognise the importance of something, you are very likely to be unsuccessful.

Your engagement can have a massive impact on your attainment. Every student in Redgrave needs to ensure that they actively participate in their education. Without this participation and excitement it can be really difficult to motivate yourself.

From actively seeking feedback, to becoming vocal and getting involved in class or group discussion, the more interested students become in their studies the higher the likelihood they will succeed.

It is very easy for students to sit in the classroom and be passive. If they do this they are likely to forget what they have learnt by the next week or even the next day. If they want to be successful they need to get involved.

The message to students is: if you know what drives you, and what you are doing has a purpose, you put energy into your work, are patient and share your enthusiasm, you will find things get a lot easier. If you want to be successful YOU have the control and the power to do it. Mr Prior - House Director

Adlington House

We had an enjoyable, cooperative day at the end of last term engaging in a range of activities designed to be creative, educational & fun. Just before this several Adlington tutor groups won a certificate for best attendance over the Autumn term within their year group. Well done to all those students whose attendance contributed to their groups winning.

We've now been back for just three weeks and Year 11 are in the middle of Maths Mock exams. They have all learnt something from the mocks completed before Christmas. Many are well on track to achieving the grades they need in the summer while others have realised they need to settle down to a few months of serious revision. Students in other years should also take the opportunity to review how they are doing and set themselves personal targets for improvement.

As staff we have also set ourselves targets. Lots of new clubs are starting up and we expect there to be even more choice than last year. Many teachers offer after school or lunchtime revision to exam classes and there are several trips recruiting students to take part now. Our aim in Adlington is that all students take advantage of at least some of the opportunities on offer. Mr Chartres - House Director

Holmes House

It’s been a fantastic two weeks for Holmes and we are nearly 800 house points ahead of the other two houses! I am so proud of all the hard work everyone is putting into their lessons and work. This term is jam packed full of extra-curricular opportunities for everyone and the new clubs list is out, with activities from a beauty club to a CAD club. In particular our year 11 students have lots of after-school and lunchtime sessions available to catch up with coursework and improve existing knowledge. There's no excuse for students to be behind with their work! I hope everyone looks at the clubs list and makes a new year’s resolution to try a club or complete that outstanding coursework. Mrs Baker - House Director

Ready for the Future V

Work Experience Update Jan 2014 We are about to start the application process for this year’s work experience. We have a bank of placements already agreed with employers which will be available for students to apply for. This year’s application process is to be completed online.

A spread sheet showing the available placements will be shared with students via Google docs along with the application form.

Once students have decided on their top 3 placements, the application form needs to be completed and shared with Mr Fleming along with a completed CV and letter of application.

When all 3 documents have been shared with Mr Fleming then their application will be accepted.

Students will have PSHEe lessons to gain access to and complete the documents

On the noticeboard near H2, there will be a set of instructions showing the students want to do and how to apply.

Deadline is 3pm on Friday 14th February 2014.

Placements are to be shared with the students by Monday 3rd March 2014.

If a placement is oversubscribed (demand outweighs supply) the criteria for placing students will be as follows:

Did they meet the deadline? Are the CV and letter of application of an acceptable standard? (spelling, quality and accuracy of

letter, etc.) Interview with a senior staff member to finally decide upon placements

For those students that don’t get into their chosen placement, we will try to source similar placements. For those students that don’t apply, individual intervention will take place to determine suitability and sub-sequent placements.

Ormiston Allotment Project

We need your help!

Year 8 students are leading the Academy in planning our first allotment project, but we need your help.

As well as tools, plant pots, seed trays and seeds we need help with

digging over the plot. Do you know anyone who wants to be

involved? if so contact Mrs Blake at Ormiston Academy.

The P.E department would like to say a huge well done to Keelan Draper (Year 9) who battled through 3 rounds of cross country competition to finally make it to 37th place over all in Suffolk for his age range which is a massive accomplishment.

Well done Keelan

As Teaching and Learning Ambassadors we are working in pairs with the faculty leaders, to explore ways to improve students’ ways of learning. Everyone has an individual view on how they learn best, therefore in our pairs we have either written a questionnaire to receive views, spoken to a mix of students from different year groups or gone into lessons to talk to students and watch the way that they engage in lessons and how they learn best. Each pair then feeds back to their faculty leader their overall view on what works best for students, so that this can be shared with teaching staff. Through carrying out these fact-finding activities we hope to make all lessons engaging for all students, so that everyone can have fun as well as learn.

Spotlight on Endeavour Ambassadors

The Community Ambassadors have been working hard to think of some ideas that would really benefit our

school and school community. Last term was a busy one but a great success . We organised a number of civvies

days, one of which had a Sporting theme and we managed to raise £400 to go towards new sports kits. The

Christmas Fair, where we also raised £400 to go towards after school clubs and we organised Christmas parcels

for members of our local community We are currently busy planning civvies days and activities for this term so

any ideas would be gratefully received. If there is anything you would like to see happen or be improved around

our school, feel free to speak to one of the Community Ambassadors or Miss Hart.

Peer Mentors We are one of the three types of Endeavour ambassadors and we specialise in helping the younger years. All ambassadors have gold ties but to tell us apart from the others we have our yellow hand badges. Peer Mentors are a mixture of year 9s 10s and 11s who are assigned to a year 7 or 8 form. We go into the form classes twice a week during registration and we are here to help. We will also be in the Peer Mentor support room every break time if you want to pop in for a chat. We are there to help you with your worries, problems or just as a friend. Don’t be afraid to approach us! We are always happy to help!

Attendance Information Thank you to all the parents who ring in when their child is absent. Overall attendance at the academy is on an upward trend but we are not quite where we would like to be, just yet. Please be aware

that your child’s absences are not automatically authorised, even if you have written a note to explain the absence, your child’s overall attendance is looked at and this is the basis for authorising or not authorising the absence. The authorising of absence is normally done in conjunction with the Academy’s Education Welfare Officer. Whilst we appreciate that you cannot help it when your child is ill, it is also important to appreciate the impact this can have on their attainment.

To date this term, on the advice of our EWO, we have issued a number of Fixed Penalty Notices where students’ attendance has fallen below 90%.

Currently 7MCS, 8NSO, 9MNE, 10JEN and 11GLD have the best attendance in their respective year groups. Adlington have the best overall house attendance.

A number of students are finding arriving on time an issue. In order to support these students I have asked that tutors monitor this. If your child is late three times in the course of a week then they will be issued a detention to help them realise the importance of arriving on time.

With the introduction of a new rewards system we are looking at a way to automatically reward the majority of students who arrive on time and who have good attendance.

A reminder that the absence number is 01473 464545 then select Option 1. If you have any queries regarding absence please contact either Mrs Jones, Attendance Officer, or me via email or phone.

Homework Home study has always been a debatable topic, with many educationalists claiming that is not worthwhile, while other views stress its importance in supporting class work and developing independence. When home study is done well it can really support rapid progress and boost attainment. This is why we are researching what home study will become in our academy. We will be asking for views from parents, carers, students, teachers and the wider community. Last year I introduced ‘Show My Homework’ as a way we could support parents and students in how to organise and make best use of home study. As we take this initiative forward we will be sending home log-in details for all students, parents and carers. This means once you have logged on you will only see the home study information for you and your child. This will ensure a much friendlier user experience and one that will help all parents and carers to support their child in making the most of their independent learning. The ‘Show My Homework’ website can be found on the students’ Endenet or the academy website at www.ormistonendeavouracademy.co.uk Thank you Mr Prior

Civic Engagement Project: Progress so far

The civic engagement project is about changing our community for the better. We have been on several trips including a trip to the Houses of Parliament, meeting last year’s Mayor and our local MP Dr Daniel Poulter. After our trip to the Houses of Parliament we were split up into two groups to make a presentation on what can be improved within our community. One group focused on replacing traffic lights with roundabouts. Our group is working on improving the facilities in Whitehouse park. We are currently looking for funding to help our ideas become a reality in our bid for new facilities at the park.

Update on French trip in Activities Week

I am trying to generate interest in a trip to France during activities week. The original plan was to take students to Lille for 2 days. Unfortunately, there were not enough students able to participate, largely due to the costs involved. We have looked into more affordable options, to allow more students to participate, and hope that the new activity will attract the 40 students needed to ensure that the trip can take place.

The new proposal is a day trip to Bologne, with a visit to the Sea Life Centre and the Bec a Suc sweet factory. We would leave the school at approximately 6am on Tuesday 22nd July (Eurotunnel availability permitting), returning at 10.30 am - 11.00pm on the same day. The cost for this would be approximately £60, and each student would need a valid passport. If your son or daughter is interested, could they please see me as soon as possible so that payments can be collected and the booking secured.

I have been advised that Eurotunnel crossings are popular in July, so the booking will need to be made by half term (14 February)

Academy Closure in Bad Weather

Advice for 2014

Please be assured that we will endeavour to open and remain open wherever possible, but we have to be mindful of health and safety requirements, both on site and on the journey to and from the academy site.

SEVERE WEATHER

In the event of severe weather setting in during the day and it being necessary to close the academy, we will contact you by text message.

IT IS ESSENTIAL THAT WE HAVE A DAYTIME EMERGENCY TELEPHONE NUMBER WHERE YOU, OR ANOTHER NOMINATED ADULT, MAY BE CONTACTED.

Should we need to make a decision to close before the end of the school day, the Local Education Authority will contact radio stations in the area, who will broadcast the information. We would advise you to listen to early morning radio broadcasts if severe weather is apparent or predicted.

• BBC Radio Suffolk will give regular bulletins at 10 minutes past and 20 minutes to the hour. http://www.bbc.co.uk/suffolk/local_radio/index.shtml frequencies 95.5, 95.9, 103.9 and 104.6 FM

• Heart FM will give bulletins at 15 minutes past and 15 minutes to the hour. www.heart.co.uk

• Information will also appear on the following website: http://schoolclosures.suffolk.gov.uk A decision to close the academy will be taken on a day-to-day basis. However, we will open the next day following closure unless a notice is posted to the contrary with BBC Radio Suffolk (see above) and on the School Closures website (see above).

As many members of academy staff do not live within the local area, it may not be possible for them to get to the academy. It is possible that we would make a decision to close the school on this basis. As you will appreciate, we must have a sufficient number of staff members to ensure the safety of the students.

OTHER CLOSURES

If there are other emergency reasons that require the academy to be closed, we will contact local radio stations, and make contact with you or the transport used to convey your child to school. We will also attempt to contact you via text message. In the event of the academy closing during the school day, we will send children home only when we know someone is available to receive them.

We recommend that you ensure that you send your children into school with warm coats, hats, scarves and gloves

as we do still encourage students to go outside during the winter at break and lunch times if the weather permits.
