Our Associate Artists execute anotherelectrifying programme of modern stringquartet music.

This is a concert conceived as sonic mass; inshape and form, transforming from beginningto end. Featuring the works of two innovatorsin mathematical construction, Nancarrow’searly String Quartet is a labyrinth of blues inspired counterpoint, whilst the visceralpossibilities of texture are explored in IannisXenakis’s brutally virtuosic Tetras.

Three composers who radically transform folktraditions into new musical languages alsofeature. Bartók’s tightly woven Third StringQuartet grows from a haunting opening intodance- like melodies, and Ligeti’s dazzlingFirst Quartet hints at the extreme abstractionand occasional absurdity that would laterbecome hallmarks of his style. ChristianMason’s quartet also explores folk traditions,by applying the overtone properties of Tuvanthroat singing to string instruments.

The concert also features a world premiere,Department of music composer GeorgeNicholson’s tribute to the late PeterCropper.
