Kayak For Sabercats Resulting in B. Snaly

Maranatha students Jon Gress and Jacob Boucher joined friend Garrett Feik to kayak the 320-mile Rock River from Horicon Marsh, WI, to Quad Cities, IL, to raise money for a Sabercat mascot costume.

Originally, the men planned to complete their task in 17 days, but were able to finish in 15, setting the record for the first group to have ever kayaked the entire river in consecutive days. The story garnered press from numerous local newspapers and TV stations and helped raise over $1,500 toward the Sabercat costume.

As a result of the money earned during Kayak for Sabercats as well as other donations, Maranatha was proud to introduce “B. Snarly” on Friday, October 3, during a competitive volleyball game against Northland International University. On that night, an enthusiastic crowd celebrated the newest member of the athletics family, B. Snarly. The official mascot of the Sabercats was formally introduced with the Maranatha lineups prior to the game and took to the crowd, high-fiving the Crazies and taking “selfies” throughout the match. Thank you to all of those who donated and had a part in bringing B. Snarly into the Maranatha family.

Introducing the Maranatha SabercatsAbout the Sabercat

What we know about the Saber-toothed cat has been determined from the fossil record. Hundreds of thousands of Sabercat bones have been excavated from the La Brea Tar Pits in California and fossil beds have been discovered throughout North and South America as well as in Europe.

Since 1901, scientists have studied the bones and learned much about the Saber-toothed cat. Smilidon fatalis literally means “deadly knife tooth.” Fearsome and ferocious, Saber-toothed cats were bear-like in stature, with powerful limbs, large neck muscles, and up to nine-inch canines. A hunter of mammoths and other large beasts, the Saber-toothed cat was among the “most impressive carnivores ever to have lived.” Similar to lions, they would work together to preserve and protect the pack.

The Bible says in Genesis 1:24 that land animals like the Saber-toothed cat were created on the sixth day. According to Genesis 6:19-21, we know every cat “kind” boarded the Ark. Creation scientists at Answers in Genesis suggest the Saber-toothed cat “probably migrated to America via land bridges around the early part of the Ice Age (approx. 2,200 B.C.) and became extinct by the end of the Ice Age (approx. 1,600 B.C.).”

We consider our MBU Sabercats fierce opponents and courageous athletes. But the Sabercats also embody cooperation, teamwork, and strong family ties—all characteristics inherent in the MBU brand.

2013-14 Baseball Review Armed with a talented young nucleus, Maranatha’s 2014 season included the strongest pitching rotation in recent history, solid defensive play, and a promising offensive outlook for the coming years.  The Sabercats doubled their win total from last season, defeating Johnson University (6-4) in the annual spring baseball trip in March, and then batting around in a double-header thumping over Lincoln Christian with scores of 22-1 and 13-3. They grabbed their final win against Finlandia University (4-3) on April 19th.  Maranatha also proved their strong defensive play against Dominican University (NCAA DIII), a team that pitcher Caleb Courtney and the Sabercats held to just two runs over the final six innings in a 5-1 loss, while challenging another NCAA DIII squad, Lakeland College, in a 3-1 loss later in the season.  Maranatha’s stability at pitching played a key role in the team’s continued improvement, and for a position that has lacked depth the past few seasons, had four individuals register an ERA under eight, and five pitchers register at least three starts in the 22-game season. Freshman Micah Burdett secured the top spot in the rotation and struck out 19 batters, while tying with teammate Adam

Courtney in wins at two apiece. Courtney logged the most strikeouts on the team, with 21, and became a valuable infielder at the corner positions. Caleb Courtney led the team with a 5.00 ERA in 18 innings pitched and had a strong glove at both first and third base. Tim Rogers and Caleb Prigge patrolled the heart of the infield, and gave Garrison the defensive presence desired in the middle as the duo connected on four out of the nine team double-plays this season.  Maranatha saw an offensive spike from the 2013 season, improving from a .203 batting average the season prior to a .239 mark in 2014 and finished with five players that averaged .282 or higher at the plate, three more players than last season. Burdett (.310), Prigge (.308) and Rogers (.290) led the charge, while Prigge finished with the team’s highest on-base percentage, at .429.  The Sabercats concluded an exciting season with a trip to the U.S. Cellular Field, home of the Chicago White Sox, in a match-up against the IIT

Scarlet Hawks. The match is shaping up to be a yearly tradition. Postseason honors went to Burdett, Rogers, Prigge ,and Adam Courtney, as each was selected to the Association of Division III All-Independents 2nd Team.

Wesley WagnerThe sophomore from New Waverly, TX, is a very reliable starting pitcher that gives

the team its best shot at having the deepest rotation. Garrison will lean on Wagner’s versatility to help contribute to the team’s offense this 2014-15 season.

Page 7: Spring 2015 Media Guide

Timothy RogersThe junior shortstop from Willmar, MN, displays outstanding leadership as a captain and was the team’s most valuable player last season. Rogers is a solid shortstop who bats third in the lineup, averaged .290 at the plate in 2014, and earned AD3I All-Independents Second-Team honors. The third-year player recorded the second most hits on the team (20) and produced nine runs, good for third on the team.

Cody BorlandThe senior from Oakley, CA, is a reliable center fielder who was named the team’s most valuable defensive player on last year’s squad. Borland’s game wasn’t limited to defense though, batting .282 at fourth in the lineup and tying for the most hits on the team (22), while finishing second in RBI’s (10).

Caleb RostThe senior out of Greenville, SC, gives the team dependability in the outfield and on the pitching staff as a spot starter after starting all but one game in 2014. Rost is a solid offensive performer who produces runs, but also provides speed on the base after closing out last season with a team-high three stolen bases.

PLAY BALL! While many students were on Spring Break, the Maranatha Baptist University baseball team had the opportunity to travel to Bani, Dominican Republic on a missions trip. The trip was delayed several days due to snowy weather on the East Coast, but once the team arrived in the Dominican, they quickly made up for lost time. The week consisted of MBU team practices in the mornings and baseball clinics for 9- to 12-year-old boys in the nearby town of Escondido during the afternoons. These clinics consisted of five fundamental baseball stations run by MBU baseball players with the help of interpreters. At a sixth station, the Gospel was presented by members of Iglesia Bautista Cristiana, a local church the baseball team partnered with from Bani. Attendees rotated to each of the six stations throughout the afternoon. Approximately 55 boys attended the sessions each day. The highlight of the trip was the opportunity to see numerous young boys make a salvation decision. The baseball team held a closing program on Thursday evening and encouraged the young boys who attended the baseball workshops to invite their parents and family members. A crowd of approximately 400 attended, and many other salvation decisions were recorded.  The trip served as an opportunity to reach into a community that needs the influence of the Gospel, but it also blessed the lives of the baseball team members. It gave Iglesia Bautista Cristiana the opportunity to make contacts in a community they have been striving to reach for a long time. The trip also taught our players about ministering and serving others. They grew much closer as a team and bonded as a group of men preparing for their upcoming season.

Akins added to the Maranatha Hall of Fame Coach Rich Akins’ accomplishments at Maranatha are diverse and always sprinkled with humor. As a student in the early years

at Maranatha, Akins was a class officer and participated in Fine Arts events. He played on the football team from 1972–1975. Dur-ing his junior and senior years, the team won two championships. Coach Akins taught at Maranatha Baptist Academy for fifteen years, served as the school administrator for six years, and was head football coach for thirty years. During his time as head football coach, his teams tied or won 10 Indian Trails Conference championships. Dr. Akins impacted the lives of many collegiate athletes dur-ing his six years as Maranatha’s Athletic Director. His involvement in fine arts events and public speaking spanned the whole time he served at Maranatha. Although Coach Akins seeks to downplay the number of lives he has influenced, those individuals bear testi-mony to the impact he has had. He continues to serve the Lord as the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Jefferson.

Coach Akins was honored on August 29, 2014 with induction into the Ma-ranatha Athletics Hall of Fame. His plaque reads: “In recognition of his accom-plishments on the football field as a Maranatha Crusader (1972-1975) and off the field as a Christian educator, coach, athletic director, and pastor; and for his dedication to our Maranatha Crusader and Sabercat athletes and athletic com-petition. As an intercollegiate athlete in the formative years of athletics at Maranatha, Dr. Akins exemplified the spirit, enthusiasm, and work ethic that Maranatha Baptist University desires to instill in all its athletes.  As a coach, athletic director, and teacher in Christian education, Dr. Akins has influenced the lives of count-less young people, instilling these same qualities in others as he continues to minister in the local church for the cause of Jesus Christ. Dr. Akins’ legacy and testimony, both on and off the field of competition, shall ever remain as a testament to the Lord Jesus Christ and to Maranatha Baptist University Athletics.”

2013-14 Softball Review Head Coach Rob Thompson’s squad doubled their win from the 2013 season, notching four in the 2014 campaign and sending four individuals to the Association of Division III All-Independents Teams for their rankings in the AD3I.  Kicking off the season at the annual North Central University Tournament, Maranatha picked up their first win, a 10-6 victory over Crown College (MN), and then went on to win three more games in the latter half of the season. The team accomplished their third win, a 24-1 thumping of Mount Mary University, to close out the first game of a season-ending double-header sweep. All but three players recorded a hit in the win, and the team produced 18 hits and 18 RBI’s. Mount Mary bounced back in the second game, but failed to overcome Maranatha, who scored four runs in the sixth to come from behind and steal a 10-9 win.  Sophomore shortstop Emily Boogher played a central role in the improved season for MBU and was named the AD3I Co-Player of the Year and First Team selection to the All-Independents Teams. Boogher finished with the highest batting percentage (.566) and slugging percentage (.811), while punching in 17 RBI’s. Junior outfielder Emily Thompson joined Boogher on the AD3I All-Independents First Team, hitting .351 at the plate for a 10th overall ranking in the Association. Thompson’s speed on the bases earned her a 3rd place finish in stolen bases (10) and a 5th place mark in runs scored (20). The final two AD3I selections belonged to seniors Rosa Lewis (Yates City, IL) and Amy Dineen (Great Valley, NY). Lewis proved she was the team’s ace on the pitching staff after recording all their wins and ranking 4th in Association for most wins. Lewis struck out 27 batters (6th, AD3I) and also had an excellent year at the plate, hitting .360 (8th, AD3I) with a .480 slugging percentage. Dineen was one of the team’s best infielders and was rewarded as such, securing a spot on the AD3I All-Independents Second Team as a utility infielder after starting

all 21 games. She displayed her consistency with a .890 fielding percentage at a difficult position (third base) and finished with five RBI’s and 10 hits.  While the 2014 season marked the last for Lewis and Dineen, Maranatha has high expectations for the 2015 campaign with the return of Boogher, Thompson, and a talented core including Kelli Fox, Samantha Swiatek, and Heather White.

Justina KolinskiThe freshman from Menominee Falls, WI,

enters the year with tremendous upside on both defense and offense. Most likely

to start in left field, the versatile first-year player will bat cleanup on offense and seek to display her strengths of consistent hitting, on-base speed, and a strong arm.

Emily ThompsonThe senior co-captain from Watertown, WI, will once again be the anchor of the outfield in center for the Maranatha defense this year. Thompson, who was selected to the first-team AD3I for the 2014 season, finished third in batting average on the team (.351), and her on-base percentage (.439) has earned her the lead-off spot in the batting rotation. Her ability to steal bases on any-level pitcher has been evident throughout her career, as she enters her fourth season with 34 career stolen bases out of 41 attempts (.829).

Emily BoogherThe junior from York, PA, will remain in her role as the starting shortstop for the Sabercats this season. The reliable co-captain looks to continue her consistent offensive and defensive play. Boogher was named to the AD3I first team last season and also re-ceived Co-Player of the Year. Slotted to hit third in the batting rotation for 2015, Boogher drove in seventeen runs last year, while notching team-high totals in batting average (.566), on-base percentage (.635), and slugging percentage (.811).

Samantha SwiatekThe third co-captain for the Sabercats finished the 2014 season with a .273 batting average to go along with an on-base percentage of .355. The junior from Walled Lake, MI, will bring energy and optimism to this year’s team, as she fills the roles of catcher and occasional pitcher throughout the season.
