park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of the big city.

With a population of just more than 4,000, Parkville allows stu-dents the small-town lifestyle and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east of Park University’s Parkville Campus gives Park University students two great entertainment op-portunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Met-ropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Con-tained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay Coun-ty including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metropolitan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kansas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kan-sas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just shy of 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kan-sas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL, Major League Soc-cer’s Kansas City Wizards, and the Kansas Speedway, which is host to several NASCAR events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones minor league baseball franchise, the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Football League, and the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis. Kansas City is also home to the Sprint Center and Kansas City Power & Light District, which opened last fall and has quickly turned into one of the region’s top entertainment districts. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experience,

which includes the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Blocks from the Power & Light District and the Sprint Center sits Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007, blocks from both the Sprint Center and Municipal Auditorium In the 2006-07 season, Park advanced to the tournament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kansas City-area team. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, includ-ing Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Country Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiving Holiday and midway through January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas keep shoppers occupied in the Sunflower State.

The Park University women’s golf team enters the 2009 spring season with a lot to be optimistic about, including a high-pro-file freshman who is already making waves for the Pirates this

season. Plern Promboobpa, who came highly touted out of Blue Springs South High School, had three top 10 finish-es in the fall for the Pirates, including closing the fall season with a 74 at Aberdeen Golf Course in St. Louis, moving up four spots to No. 4 at the Maryville-St. Louis Invitational. Promboobpa, who came to the Kansas City area from Thailand, finished fourth at the Mis-souri State Championship in her only season for Blue Springs South and was signed in the spring of 2008 to play for the Pirates. She joins a team of five that includes three juniors – Nicole Ainsworth, Nicole Wie-he and Roxanne (Jensen) Chadwell – as well as a sophomore, Allison Vaughn. Gone from last year’s NAIA tourna-ment roster is Ashley Nicks, who be-came an assistant coach for the Pirates after completing her eligibility last May in San Diego. “This is definitely a group to be excited about, with the experience we have coming back and the kind of play-er we have as a freshman in Plern,” said head coach Kelly DeFeo. “Wiehe, Ains-worth and Roxie give us two years worth of experience already, and I really felt like Allison Vaughn really came on at the end of last year and on into the fall.” Wiehe was Park’s No. 2 player much of last season and continued to fill that role through the fall, and last summer, she took the 32nd-Annual Wyandotte County Open at Sunflower Hills Golf Course. Ainsworth, Chadwell and Vaughn also gained valuable off-season experience over the summer to prep for the fall, which saw the

Pirates take their season-opening tournament at William Jewell by 20 strokes. “Our work over the summer paid off and I think the girls saw it all

come together in that first tournament,” DeFeo said. “We played against some great competition in the fall and I thought faired

pretty well.” Park finished second behind NCAA Division II Rockhurst

at Northwest Missouri State, and in St. Louis, the Pirates were fourth behind Lindenwood, Truman State and Washing-ton-St. Louis.

The spring schedule in 2009 will begin March 23 and 24 in Win-field, Kan., as the Pirates take part in the Southwestern Invitational at Quail Ridge Golf Course, a tournament the Pirates won last season. A new tourney appears on the schedule March 30 and 31 in DeS-oto, Texas, as the Pirates travel to the Bluebonnet Classic at Thorntree Country Club, and Park begins April in the St. Louis area, taking part in the McKendree Invitational at Cardinal Creek Golf Club. The Pirates return home April 13 and 14 to host the Park Universi-ty Invitational at The National Golf Club of Kansas City’s Deuce, which marks the last regular season tournament of the spring. Teams from the Red River Athletic Conference and Midlands Col-legiate Athletic Conference will get together April 19-21 for an auto-matic bid to the NAIA tournament, which will take place this season at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Rapid City, S.D. “This will be a very challenging schedule, and we are looking for-

ward to it,” DeFeo said. “The golf courses we play are all very tough and will prepare us for the postseason, and once we get there, we

just have to be mentally strong and stay within ourselves.”

Roxanne (Jensen) Chadwell is one of three juniors returning to the 2008-09 Park University women’s golf roster. She was also

one of five Pirates to participate last season in the 2008 NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship in San Di-

ego, Calif.

first-ever Region IV title in school history as well as the program’s first-ever national tournament appear-ance in just its fifth year as a varsity program. The Pirates were also the MCAC Tournament Champion for the fourth-straight year before advancing to the 2008 NAIA National Championship at Lake San Marcos Country Club in San Diego. In the program’s first season, DeFeo guided then-freshman Katie Johnson to an MCAC Individual Championship en route to being named the conference’s Player of the Year. In 2004-05, she did the same for then-freshman Ashley Nicks, who also was named MCAC Player of the Year. As a team in 2004-05, the Pirates took second place at the MCAC Championships. In 2005-06, Nicks and Johnson battled each other for the indi-vidual conference title, with Johnson prevailing after a playoff, marking the third straight year a Pirate was crowned Conference Player of the Year. In 2006-07, DeFeo’s Pirates were again MCAC Tournament champions and runners up in Region IV behind all-confer-ence performances from Johnson and Nicks, earning DeFeo MCAC Coach of the Year honors. DeFeo also represents Park as the MCAC and Region IV chair for women’s golf, while also serving as a region and national rater for the NAIA. In addition to her duties at Park, DeFeo, a Class A PGA member with the Midwest Section since 1995, currently is a seasonal instructor at The National Golf Club of Kansas City. Park came away with two titles, winning the team title with a four-person score of 352, and senior Ash-ley Nicks recorded her first of five wins on the year, firing a 78 in the first-ever running of the Bearcat Invitational, which also marked the be-ginning of the Northwest women’s golf program. Senior Amy Hol-lander also placed in the Bearcat top 10, finishing eighth. A week later, Park trav-eled across the metro area to Claycrest Golf Club and the William Jewell Fall Invitational, where Nicks re-corded her first second-place finish of the season, fol-lowed by Nicole Wie-he and Allison Vaughn, who each finished tied for 10th in the final fall event of 2007-08. Spring began with a trip to the South Central Kansas Invitational at Quail Ridge Golf Club in Winfield, Kan., and the Pi-rates leapt a large hurdle by beating Region IV ri-val Southwestern in the tournament, coming away with a first-place finish and a two-day total of 737. Nicks shot 88 in the tournament’s first round and 80 on day two to win

it, while Roxanne Jensen (now Chadwell) also earned at top 10 nod with a ninth-place fin-ish. The month of April began with another victory for Nicks on April 1, winning the Wil-liam Woods Invitational, and she captured the Ottawa Invitational a week later, becoming one of three Pirates to place in OU’s top 10, helping Park to a tournament-best one-day total of 353. Wiehe finished fifth in the tour-ney, while Vaughn registered a seventh-place

finish. Park University hosted its own invitational at The National Golf Club

of Kansas City’s No. 2 course, The Deuce, which was captured by Rockhurst, con-

cluding the regular season before

moving on to the 2008

M C A C C h a m p i -onship in Lawrence,

Kan., at Al-vamar Golf Club.

Park won the conference title with

a two-day 730, taking one-through-three in the

tournament individually as well as fifth and sixth, and

eighth and ninth. Nicks was the MCAC Player of the Year with a two-day champion-ship of 162, followed by Wiehe and Jensen in second and third, Vaughn and Ainsworth in fifth and sixth.

Hollander and Nichole Wessel also registered top 10 honors, finishing ninth

and 10th in the tournament. Park won its first-ever region title

a week later at Sunflower Hills Golf Course in Bonner Springs, Kan., as Nicks

matched her two-day total of 162, but finished runner-up in the region. How-ever, Wiehe, Jensen, Vaughn and Ains-worth all finished in the region’s top 10, helping the Pirates secure a trip to San Diego with a two-day team championship, beating defending Region IV champion Southwestern by 20 strokes.

Park closed out the season May 20-23 at Lake San Marcos Country Club

in San Diego, Calif., finishing 21st in the NAIA National Championship Tournament,

marking the school’s first-ever trip to the national championship event in its five-year women’s golf history.

Allison Vaughn had her two best collegiate rounds of golf as a freshman in the 2008 NAIA Women’s Golf

22 • PARK UNIVERSITy SOFTBALL

The Park University softball team returns a plethora of play-ers from its 2008 squad, which earned its first MCAC regular season crown in Park’s history.

Head coach Amy Reif returns to Park in her fourth sea-son and finished 10-2 in conference play and went 23-23 overall last season, it’s safe to say she has high expectations for 2009. “I think everyone would agree that our goal is to go in and win our Conference Tournament this season and reach the National Tournament,” Reif said. “We have such a solid group of re-turners and some great newcomers that anything is possible.” Park began the 2008 season on a slow start going 2-8 in its first 10 games. Things didn’t get much better in Park’s next 12 games sporting a 3-9 record through that stretch. But once conference play began on April 6, 2008 against York College, the Pirates turned into a different ball club.

Park went 8-2 in its first 10 MCAC games and never looked back, bringing home its first MCAC regular

season championship in school history. Park ended its season in the Region IV final to Friends University

in a nail bitter, 1-0, just one game shy of the NAIA Na-tional Tournament.

The Pirates will have to move on without the services of three major contributors from last

year including Jill Prather, Rachel Hartford and Megan Goings. All three were vital to the team but coach Reif knows she has players that can step up where they left off. “We are fortunate that we only lost three players from last years team that saw the field a lot,” Reif said. “Jill Prather was a re-ally good player, she had lots of speed and we will miss that. Rachel Hartford

will also be missed at first base, she was the epitome of a team player. “Megan Goings will probably be

our biggest loss, she was a big force be-hind the plate. But she began splitting time with Emily Calder half way through the season and Emily will really benefit

from that experience from last year.” Returning from that 2008 squad is two of Park’s top pitcher’s from a year ago in Jamie Garman and Brittany Johnson. Garman, a senior out of Smithville, Mo. finished the season 10-10 and re-corded nine complete games and led the Pirates with three shutouts last season. Garman also threw 118 in-nings and posted a 6.79 ERA. 2008 marked Johnson’s first year playing for Park and the righty from Kearney, Mo. led the Pirates on the mound all season long with a team leading 4.29 ERA and a team best re-cord of 12-8.

The 5-9 sophomore also led Park in innings pitched with 155.1, complete games, with 15, strikeouts, with 73, appearances, with 31 and opposing batting average, at .279. “Pitching will be huge for us this year,” Reif said. “With Jamie (Gar-man) coming back we are expecting her to step up and take charge as a senior. We are also very fortunate to have Brittany (Johnson) back, she came to us in the Spring semester last year and came in and did a tremendous job for us. “I am looking forward to freshman Justine Riner to get some in-nings for us too. She has a lot of potential and had some great experi-ence in High School and on her summer team last year.” Park also returns one of its biggest bats from last year in Kristen Hansen. Hansen led the Pirates with a .387 batting average last year and belted a team high 60 hits. The MidAmerica Nazarene transfer had 17 RBI a year ago and will take the reins as the starting center fielder this season. “Hansen’s bat will be huge in the lineup and she catches just about everything that comes at her in center field,” Reif said. Park’s infield will return almost the entire lineup for coach Reif this season. Starting third baseman Alicia Wedel brings back a batting average of .345 from a year ago and a fielding percentage of .957. The Pirates will also return the services of starting shortstop Ash-ley Scates and starting second baseman Lisa Luettinger. Scates led the team in RBI with 34 in 2008 and hit .342 on the year. Luettinger hit .294 last season and started all 46 games. “Our infield is bringing back a lot of experience, practically every-one is back and we will add a freshman to the mix in Jennifer Cordell,” Reid said. “She can play just about any position on the infield.” Cordell is a 5-7 freshman out of Holton, Kan., and will look to see time at first base this season for the Pirates. A number of new faces will also hope to see the field for Park this season including Kristen Kluge, Abby Welker and Brittany Dortch. Kluge is a transfer out of Johnson County Community College and can play almost any position in the outfield, while Welker comes to Park after a successful stint at Piper High School. “I am looking forward to seeing what Nicole Wilson can bring to the table this year,” Reif said. “She started a few games for us last year and I would like to see her make more of an impact. Freshman Brittany Dortch will be key for us in the outfield as well.” Park will get the 2009 season started at the MidAmerica Nazarene Tournament on February 27-28. The Pirates will face Bethany College,

McPherson College and University of Saint Mary all on the first day. Park will play at home for the first time on March 8 at 1:00 p.m. against Benedictine and conference play will kick off on April 3 with Park taking on York College at home at 2:00 p.m. for a double header. The Midlands Collegiate Athletic Confer-ence Tournament will be played from April 30-May 1 and the winner of that tourney will go on to play in the NAIA National Tournament in Decatur, Alabama May 12-15.

THE SCHEDULE Park University has been picked to finish second in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Con-ference in 2009 according to the MCAC Preseason Coaches Poll released Thursday. Under head coach Amy Reif, Park went 23-23 overall last season and recorded a 10-2 MCAC mark en route to Park’s first ever regular season conference championship. Bellevue University has been selected to win the 2009 MCAC Softball Championship after posting a 29-14 overall record and 9-3 MCAC mark a year ago. The Bruins went on to win the 2008 MCAC Tournament and qualified for the Region IV tour-nament. Peru State College is picked third by the league coaches after going 25-22 (9-3 MCAC) a year ago. Rounding out the poll are York Col-lege (4th), College of Saint Mary (t-5th), Haskell Indian Nations University (t-5th).

Jamie Garman drove in 33 runs last year for the Pirates and posted a 6.79 ERA on the mound during the 2008 season.

Amy Reif enters her fourth season as the head softball coach at Park University. The 2008 MCAC Coach of the Year led the Pirates to one of their

most successful seasons in Park history, guiding the Pirates to a 10-2 conference record and a 23-23 overall mark in ‘08. Park earned its first MCAC regular season championship in its history and came within one game of qualifying for the NAIA National Tournament. In the 2007 season, Reif led the Pirate softball team to an overall record of 18-28 and finished 7-7 in the MCAC. Park con-cluded its 2007 season appearing in post-season action in the MCAC Tournament. This was the second time in school history that the softball team participated in the tournament. Despite suffering early elimination in the tournament, Reif produced eight players who received conference recognition. One player earned All-MCAC first-team honors, four players earned second-team honors and three players were honorable mention. Two players were named NAIA All-American Scholar-Athletes for their work in the classroom. In her first season at the helm of the Pirate program, Reif led her squad to an 18-19 overall record and a 7-9 mark in the MCAC. She had nine players earn All-MCAC honors in 2006. In addition, four players were awarded NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete acco-lades at the conclusion of the season. Reif came to Park with more than seven years of experience as a player and assistant coach at NCAA Division I Auburn University. She served as a full-time assistant coach at Auburn for three and a half seasons, including the 2002 campaign when she was a mem-ber of the NCAA South Region Coaching Staff of the Year. In 2002, Auburn qualified for the school’s first NCAA Regional with a 37-28 overall record and a 15-15 mark in the Southeastern Conference. During Reif’s tenure at AU as a full-time assistant

(2000-04) and one season as a graduate assistant (1999-2000), the Tigers reached the 30-win plateau

on three occasions. As a player, Reif spent three seasons as an infielder at Auburn for head coach Tina Deese (1996-99) and still ranks among the school’s career leaders in sacrifice hits (2nd, 28) and games started (10th, 173). As a junior, she was named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll

for her efforts in the classroom. A native of Kansas City, Kan., she started her playing career at Johnson County (Kan.) Community College in 1994, where she played one season, earning first-team all-conference honors.

Reif, who worked at ESPN as a production assistant before coming to Park, received her bachelor’s degree in communications from Auburn in 1998, before obtaining her master’s degree in communications from AU in 2000. Amy and her husband, Derek, who played baseball at Auburn from 1997-2000, have two sons, Storm and Cash.

2008 PARK SOFTBALL SEASON REVIEW

The Park University softball team took its program to new heights in 2008, going 10-2 in Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference play and capturing its first MCAC regular season

crown in school history. If you were to follow the squad from the beginning of the season to the end, you wouldn’t have believed that the team that began the season would end up bringing home a conference championship. Park began the 2008 season on a slow start going 2-8 in its first 10 games, and things didn’t get much better in Park’s next 12 games sporting a 3-9 record through that stretch. But once conference play began on April 5, 2008 against Peru State, the Pirates turned into a different ball club. Park went 8-2 in its first 10 MCAC games and never looked back, bringing home its first MCAC Regular Season championship in school history. Park swept Peru State on the road, and one day later traveled to York College and swept the Panthers, 4-3 and 12-4. The Pirates then split a two game series on the road with confer-ence foe Bellevue on April 14 and Haskell on April 15. The Pirates then swept Central Christian on the road and swept the College of Saint Mary at home, 6-1 and 4-2. Park also picked up a few non-conference wins along the way in the month of April, sweeping Townsend Cup rival William Jew-ell, 7-3 and 3-0, on April 2. The Pirates also took down Missouri Valley in a sweep on April 24, 11-0 and 6-5, all at the Park Soft-ball Complex. Much of the success in MCAC play was due to head coach Amy Reif and her effort to find the perfect lineup for her team. Park struggled all season long to fit the right players into its infield. Many combinations were used throughout the early part of the year. But Reif used the lineup of Ashley Scates at shortstop, Alicia

Wedel at third base, Megan Goings at catcher, Lisa Luettinger at sec-ond and Rachel Hartford at first base, to solve the issue. With that lineup came instant results and the Pirates made their way to the postseason. The Pirates qualified for the Region IV tournament for a spot into the NAIA National Tournament in Decatur, Ala. Park began the tournament red hot, taking down Kansas Wesley-an, 9-1, in game one and MCAC rival Bellevue, 7-4, in game two. Park then took on Friends University in game three of the tourney losing, 2-0. In the Region IV semifinals, the Pirates again faced off against Bel-

levue. Park made quick work of the Bruins, defeating them, 8-3. Next up for Park featured the

Region IV championship which billed Park up against Friends University, winner of the contest

would qualify for the NAIA National Softball Tournament. Friends and Park battled back and forth through-

out the game, with Friends prevailing late in the game, 1-0.

Many Pirates were awarded for their ef-forts in 2008 including Jamie Garman, Kristen

Hansen and Alicia Wedel, who were all award-ed with NAIA Region IV All-Region honors. Several players were awarded All-MCAC awards and six earned first team honors in-cluding, Garman, Hansen, Wedel, Goings,

Scates and Emily Calder. Wedel was also named the MCAC Newcomer of the year, along with

coach Reif being named the MCAC Coach of the Year.

Brittany Johnson was named to the All-MCAC Sec-ond team and graduating senior Jill Prather made the

All-MCAC honorable mention squad.

2008 Senior Class (Left to Right): Megan Goings (Catcher), Rachel Hartford (First Base), Jill Prather (Outfield).

Brittany Johnson made 26 appearances with 16 starts in her freshman year, collecting

131.1 innings pitched with 61 strike outs.

The 300-seat Park University Softball Complex is home to the 2008 MCAC Champion Pirate Softball program, which plays all of its home contests at the complex in addition to all outdoor practices. Park’s softball complex was the host of the 2008 MCAC postseason tournament, marking the first-ever post-season event held at the field. Located adjacent to Julian Field, which sits south of the softball field, the complex is also equipped with a regulation tarp, bleacher seating behind home plate, an LED scoreboard, filming deck and batting cages beyond the left field wall. Park’s all-dirt infield and lush grass outfield, under the su-pervision of Greg Degener, is one of the finest collegiate play-ing surfaces in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area. The field measures 215 feet down both the right- and

left-field lines and 225 to dead center field. The field also sits below the bank of Missouri 9 Highway, just off of East Street on the Northwest side of the University’s Parkville campus.

PIRATE PITCHING After losing three-fourths of a starting rotation that went 24-10 collectively in 2008, excitement isn’t usually the first feeling most baseball coaches would describe when talking about an upcoming season. However, Park head baseball coach Cary Lundy is just that when talking about his pitchers. Lundy must replace three pitchers from last year’s rotation that went 29-18 and played for both the MCAC and NAIA Region IV championships, but the Pirates will do so with their top arm back from last season, Josh Hake. “It’s hard to say that a guy goes 9-0 with the kind of num-bers he (Hake) had would be improved coming into the next season, but from what we’ve seen so far, it could be a fun year watching that young man on the mound,” Lundy said. “If he goes out and competes like he did in 2008, he will be successful with his pitches. He’s got great stuff, and he needs to be a leader on the staff.” Hake made 11 appearances and nine starts, toss-ing four complete games and figuring on three of the Pirates’ seven shutouts during the season. Hake carried a 2.64 ERA through the season, tossing a team-best 61.1 innings and striking out a team-leading 84 batters while surren-dering 26 walks. He held opponents to a .171 batting average and gave up 37, of which 22 were earned. At the conclusion of the 2008 season, Hake was named MCAC Pitcher of the Year and All-Region IV, and in June, he was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 50th round of Major League Baseball’s First-Year Player Draft. Another returner to the pitching staff is Kiki Fuentes, who saw 2008 come to an early

end due to injury. “Kiki is a lot healthier now and really looks great,” Lundy said. “For him to get back into form from 2007 will be an added bonus for us.” Fuentes made only three appearances last season, but in 2007, he went 3-3 in 50.1 innings, appearing in 15 games with five starts and a 3.40 ERA. He also struck out 26 and tossed one complete game.

“Because of the schedule, we’ll have to go with a six-man ro-tation, and that was by design to get all of our pitchers and es-pecially the new guys ready for conference play,” Lundy said. Two of those new faces to the rotation come to the Pirates from Maple Woods Community College, one of which enters the mix with a familiar last name to the Park program.

Michael Barbosa, the younger brother of former Pirate pitcher and Rockford River Hawk Joe Barbosa, comes to

the program after seven appearances for Maple Woods last season where he tossed 19.2 innings and struck out 18. Park’s second insertion into the rotation from Ma-ple Woods is Matt Lackner, who originally signed on to play the 2009 season with NCAA Division II Alabama-

Huntsville. Lackner made eight starts for Maple Woods

last year with 53 innings pitched and a 4.08 ERA. He gave up 24 runs in posting a 4-4 record on the mound, producing a better-than 4-to-1 strike

outs-to-walks ratio by fanning 42 batters and allowing 10 walks.

“Matt (Lackner) was Maple Woods’ top arm last year, so he is a great addition to our program,” Lundy said. “And in Michael (Barbosa), we get a familiar face who we know can contribute right

away to our pitching staff after competing for a very talented team last year.”

Josh Hake returns for his senior season after going 9-0 with a 2.64 ERA and 84 strike outs in 2008. Last June, he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Allen County left-handed transfer Ethan Barnett also expects to figure into the rotation for the Pirates after making 10 appearances for the Red Devils last season. Barnett recorded 21 strike outs and went 3-4 in 30 innings pitched. Park is also looking for an impact from Derek McGowan, a right-handed freshman who pitched for Raytown South last season. McGowan was named All-Suburban Middle Six at shortstop in the Kansas City area by the Independence Examiner last season. He was also an all-conference and all-area performer on the infield and on the mound throughout his career at Raytown South. “McGowan has made great strides in his first season of collegiate baseball and could be a very special player by the time he is a veteran in our program,” Lundy said. “I am very pleased with what we’ve got, at least this far into our spring workouts, and I think it could be a great year on the mound for us.” In the bullpen, the Pirates return 6-foot-5 righty Jeff Hall, as well as Jake Russell who has seen valuable innings for the Pirates over the past two seasons. Two-way returnee Dustin Laird should also help the bullpen in addition to his duties on the infield, and newcomer Eric Goodline, who transferred from Santa Rosa Community College, could also help, according to Lundy. “Goodline’s a very versatile guy who can hit, play first base and pitch, and Dustin Laird has been in pressure situations for us before,” Lundy said. “Our bullpen is much deeper this year than we have been, and we have some left-handed guys who can give us innings.”

THE INFIELD The anchor of the Pirate defense will be its middle infield, manned this season by last year’s starting double-play combination of short-stop Nick Kouratou and second baseman Pete Peters, who was the only Pirate player to make 46 starts last season. Kouratou played in 42 games, making 42 starts at short in Park’s 47-game 2008 schedule. As a pair, the two were also the third- and fourth-leading hitters on the team, with Kouratou batting .404 with 42 RBIs, marking the best returning RBI total to the 2009 lineup. Peters hit .373, collecting 13 doubles on the year while scoring the second-best run total by crossing the plate 39 times. The duo helped the Pirate defense turn 31 double plays last season, and Peters finished the year with Park’s best infield fielding percentage, .965.

“Our infield really starts with Kouratou and Peters, and in my opinion, there’s not a finer middle-infield combo in the country,” Lundy said. “They’re a great double-play tandem

and both are very good at the plate. Kouratou has a great shot at being drafted and is already getting profes-

sional looks. If he can duplicate last year’s per-formance, he will gain a lot of interest as this

year goes on.” At first base, the platoon of Ryan

Fawks and Chris Evans from last sea-son must be replaced after both players graduated following 2008.

Lundy and his staff will have a few options in filling first, includ-

ing last year’s starting third baseman Brett Gordon, who made 41 starts at the

hot corner a year ago. Should Gordon move across the field, Laird, the

team’s starting shortstop in 2007, would move back into the infield rotation at third.

“That change would make us extremely

athletic defen-

sively, as well as the addition of another solid bat to our lineup,” Lundy said. “Laird was bumped from the starting lineup last year by Koura-tou, but he was our leading RBI guy two seasons ago, so he’d be a valu-able addition to our lineup that could also help us on the mound.” When Gordon is at third base in 2009, Santa Rosa Community College transfer Eric Goodline could figure into the infield at first base, as well as catchers Bryan Coggins and Adam Shupe who could come from behind the plate to fill in at first.

OUTFIELD & CATCHERS The Park University outfield returns a pair of starters from last season, as well as two players who were on last year’s team that could provide depth in the outfield throughout the year. The outfield will also see competition from newcomers to the roster, from both high school and the junior college ranks for 2009. Park’s outfield anchors from last year are Ryan Weedin and Jes-se Kearns, both playing in more than 40 games on the year. Weedin made 33 starts in 45 games last season, playing both center and left, while Kearns played all three spots and made 40 starts in 43 games. “Any time you return two starters in the outfield, you expect big things,” Lundy said. “Both of those guys are good defensive outfield-ers, and they bring a lot of experience to our lineup, as well, with Wee-din being a four-year starter and the way Kearns came on at the end of last year.” Weedin hit .278 with a team-leading 48 runs scored last season, and he also recorded six doubles, three triples and two home runs. Kearns hit .314, driving in 36 runs while stealing a team-best eight bases in eight tries, and he scored 28 runs to go with 10 doubles, a triple and five home runs. Another player who will fight for time on the outfield corners is Michael Onwumere, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound Toronto-native and trans-fer from Cochise Community College. Park will also look for outfield contributions from Darian Sandford, who stole 58 bases in 64 at-tempts last year for Florissant Valley Community College in St. Louis. “Michael is a big, strong outfielder who brings a big bat and a good amount of speed to the lineup,” Lundy said. “He can run and has good range in the outfield. Sandford also has a lot of speed, so we hope he can become a real threat on the bases.” Justin Gambill and Ryan Deude saw at bats off the bench for the Pirate outfield last season, and Deude appeared in 20 games scoring 10 runs on the year, sharing the catchers’ courtesy running duties. “We will have great outfield depth this season, with Gambill and Ryan Deude providing a lot of speed off the bench, and we’re also looking for a boost from Phil DeGrace, who comes to us from Fort Osage (High School),” Lundy said. DeGrace was named First-Team All-Middle Six in the outfield last season by the Independence Examiner, and he was named to the Kan-sas City Metro Baseball Coaches Association All-Star team. Behind the plate, a two-man race for the starting job has ensued, with Bryan Coggins and Adam Shupe competing for playing time as transfers to the program in 2009. Coggins, a 6-foot-2 transfer from Mountain Home, Ark., played last season for Henderson State and hit .216 in 23 games with 13 runs scored, one double and one home run. He also drove in 10 and stole two bases for the Reddies. Shupe is a familiar transfer to Park, having played against the Pirates last season in a Bellevue uniform. A 6-foot-4 220-pound catcher and infielder, Shupe hit .290 in 53 games last year for the Bruins, who advanced to the Avista-NAIA World Series. A starter in 15 games last year, Shupe posted 20 base hits in 69 at bats, including five doubles and four home runs and 23 RBIs. “Our catching is as deep as it’s been since I’ve been associated with the program,” said Lundy, who has served on the coaching staff since the program was resurrected in 2000. “Adam Shupe provides a lot of leadership and middle-of-the-order power, but Bryan Coggins should share some of the time behind the plate, as well.”

Senior infielder Brett Gordon could move across the diamond in 2009, playing first base after spending the 2008 season at third base for the Pirates.

Cary Lundy enters his seventh season as the head baseball coach at Park University as the school’s winningest head baseball coach and the only skipper to total 100 or more wins

in his career, Lundy is 166-130-1 in six seasons at the helm of the Pirate

baseball program, including leading his 2003 and 2006 squads to 30-win seasons.

He managed the team to 28 wins during the 2008 season, and the team was one win away from advancing to an NAIA Super Regional, falling to Bellevue University in the NAIA Region IV title game.

Park also played for a shot at the MCAC tour-nament title in Omaha, Neb., and at the con-clusion of the 2008 season, Park had its first player drafted during the Lundy Era when Josh Hake was taken in the 50th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

In 2006, he guided the Pirates to the Region IV Tournament championship game, while in 2007, his Pirates qualified for the tournament, amassing 28 wins and finishing the season seven games above .500.

Before taking over the program in 2003, he served for three sea-sons as an assistant coach at Park, starting when the program was reinstated in 2000.

During the summer months, Lundy coaches UMB Bank in Kansas City’s prestigious Ban Johnson League, leading his squads to seven league championships. In addition, he has also served as a recom-

mending scout for the Cincinnati Reds organization. A 1982 graduate of Park and native of Kansas City, Mo., Lundy played baseball, basketball and ran cross country as a Pirate. He has two children, J.D. and Kiely.

2008 PARK BASEBALL SEASON REVIEW

The Park University baseball team turned in one of its most suc-cessful seasons in school history in 2008 despite playing only 47 games with an overall record of 29-18, just one win shy of

tying a school-record 30 victories. The Pirates played in both the MCAC and NAIA Region IV cham-pionship contests, falling in both to Avista-NAIA World Series Qualifier Bellevue University, who spent most of the 2008 season in the NAIA Top 10. Park picked its season up after a 4-5 start with an 11-game win-ning streak in March, going from March 14 to March 29 with 11-straight wins, beginning in game two of a four-game series against York Col-lege that saw the Pirates take 3-of-4. The streak came to an end in conference play, as well, as the Pi-rates dropped the fourth game of a four-game set at Peru State Col-lege, taking 3-of-4 from the Bobcats. From the beginning of the series with York to the end of the Peru State series, Park went 10-2 in con-ference games and finished the year 15-9 in the MCAC. Late in the year, Park went on another winning streak, be-ginning with a four-game sweep of Oklahoma Wesleyan April 18-19 and lasting until the MCAC tournament when the Pirates knocked off Bellevue 12-10 at Omaha’s Westgate Field. Park started the conference tourney with a win over College of the Ozarks and Bellevue be-fore losing two to the Bruins for the conference tournament championship. A week later, in Hutchinson, Kan., Park barreled through three-straight KCAC opponents on the way to the region championship game, beating Friends, Kansas Wesleyan and Bethany all by five runs each. The Pirates then took on Bellevue for the NAIA Region IV title and fell twice to the Bruins, ending the season 11 games over .500. At home during the 2008 season, Park was 16-8, in-cluding an 8-4 mark in confer-ence play at Comfort Field, and 10 runs seemed to be the magic num-ber for the Pirates, who were 13-2 on the season when scoring at least 10 runs in a game. The same could be said for leading after the sixth inning, where the Pi-rates were

20-2 on the year, and Park made its mark in the third and fourth in-nings during the season, scoring 61 third-inning runs and a team-best 65 during the fourth inning of the 2008 season. Ryan Fawks finished as the team’s top bat for average, hitting .416 with a team-high 44 RBIs, and the senior first-baseman stepped up in conference play to hit .443 with 26 runs driven in. Chris Luera hit .405 with five home runs last year, which tied for the team lead, and he drove in 39 RBIs with a .475 batting average dur-ing the MCAC schedule. On the mound, Luera was 7-3 with a 4.02 ERA and 62 strike outs in 56 innings pitched. Nick Kouratou hit .404 on the year with 42 RBIs, while Jesse Kearns and Chris Evans each hit five home runs to tie for the team lead and Ryan Weedin scored a team-best 48 runs. Second baseman Pete Peters was next in line for runs scored with 39, and he batted .373 on the season.

Josh Hake was the team’s top pitcher in 2008, tossing 61.1 innings with a team-leading 84 strike outs, which

ranked in the NAIA’s top five nationally. Hake was 9-0 on the year with a 2.64 ERA and in June, he was

taken by the Philadelphia

Phillies in the Ma-

jor League Baseball First-

Year Player Draft. Bo Prather was Park’s

third staple in the pitching rotation, going 55.1 innings

last season with 41 strike outs and a 5.69 ERA, and Vince Ortega

split time between the bullpen and the starting rotation, collecting four

saves early in the year before earning six starts late. Ortega had a 5.70 ERA in 14 appearances, striking out

38 batters on the year. Jake Russell, Jeff Hall, John Angell and Brad Lewandowski also recorded saves last season for the Pirates.

2008 Senior Class (Left to Right): Chris Evans, Ryan Fawks, Chris Luera, Jake Moore, Bo Prather, Brandon Skelton.

Nick Kouratou started in 42 games at shortstop for park, hitting .404 with 39 RBIs, six doubles, a triple and two home runs.

Park University’s Comfort Field is the home of the Pirate baseball program, which has compiled 237 wins in nine seasons as a varsity program and has produced eight winning seasons in that nine-year span. Comfort Field measures 330 down the lines and 375 to each power ally, with 400 feet to dead-center field. A berm behind home plate adds to the Field’s seating capacity, which reaches 300 with wooden bleachers between the two dugouts. Comfort Field’s backdrop is nearly all wooded, with trees lining the entire out-field landscape and home plate back-drop. The field is adjacent to Hem-ingway Field, which serves as the practice facility for Park Univer-sity soccer, and both are under the supervision of Greg Degener, athletic fields supervisor. A regulation tarp protects the field in the event of rain, which was named after Park Board of Trustees Member Mark Comfort, and beyond the right-field wall is a regulation batting cage for pregame use. Bullpens sit along the line adjacent to the team’s dugout.
