What a year for SHS! We never sit still in our quest to improve the quality of life for our students and staff. This year, we have seen lots of physical changes to school, beginning with the opening of the sixth form block back in September and the new windows and heating system. This term we have started to remove the old, temporary classrooms and start work on our new maths’ and English block and soon work will commence on our new Science labs. We are excited to welcome our new Year 7s in September and will certainly fill our new classrooms as this year group is full with numbers set to rise again next year. We have taken part in all kinds of activities this year from Duke of Edinburgh expeditions to Bake Offs to athletics’ meets, Science events and trips abroad. We have welcomed local businesses and universities into school and invited ex-students to come in and share what they are up to with our younger members of the SHS family. We are all looking forward to sharing the success of our Year 11 and year 13 students on results days and seeing them reap the rewards for hard work. Of course a successful school is about partnership and we would like to thank you for all of your support this year: for ensuring our students come to school on time and equipped to learn, for turning up to our events and for letting us know about achievements outside of school. This communication is really important to us. So, it only remains for me to wish you all a wonderful, sunny summer on behalf of everyone at SHS. We look forward to welcoming everyone back in September for the next phase of our journey together.

New school day from September 2018
Monday, Wednesday and Thursday school will finish at 3.30pm and on Tuesday and Friday we finish at 3pm.
Exciting times ahead at SHS as the school day is having some changes added. Students will be
participating in more lessons throughout the week, for them to access more option choices and to
expand their academic portfolios. During Academic Tutoring, students will be completing a
mindfulness programme to increase positivity. Great care has been taken to organise this feat, and
we have recently completed a trial of the new break and lunch times; a massive success. Details of
the new school day and alterations to breaks and lunches are as follows. There are also a wide
range of brunch and lunch choices that students can choose from.
SHS Life Summer 2018 - 4
One of the most exciting afternoons in our school calendar happened this previous Tuesday. Several our students from Year 7 up to Year 11 joined forces with students from our primary school connections to celebrate another year of academic and attendance success. The Pyramid Oscars took place this year at Worcester Cathedral, the perfect way to celebrate students’ achievements. Comments from those attending included Joshua Millard, Nathanael Saleh and Billy Doughty (7ES). They said ‘all three of us were pleased and proud to be chosen for the event. Josh achieved his medal for his persistent attendance whilst Billy and Nathanael achieved our special awards for Endeavour and Best Creative Writing, respectively. We were happy to represent the school for this occasion.’ Further celebrations were for Despina Marcou (10EG) for successfully attending school every day for the past 11 years, showing outstanding commitment! A massive well done also to Ben Ward (9Dc), having attended every day for the past 10 years, and Aaron Lampitt (10RJ) and Rosie Kirby (7VR) for 8 years of attendance! A big thank you to all staff and students who were involved in organising and attending the ceremony. A special thank you to the musical performances from Hartlebury CE Primary School Choir and our very own talented musicians. We look forward to seeing many more of you next year!

Celebrat ion Evening 2018
Celebration Evening
A fantastic way to end the school year is our celebration evening for Years 7-9. This year we had more student
nominations than ever and welcomed the family and friends of winning students to enjoy a British Tea Party
themed event. Winners were nominated and chosen by staff members, and students were picked based on the
outstanding work they have been doing this year, be that academically, socially or community wide. It was
truly amazing to see some fabulous students, all celebrating their success with their school and loved ones. A
massive SHS congratulations to all the winners! A huge thank you also to our talented musicians who played a
selection of mesmerising songs that really cemented the wondrous atmosphere of the evening.
The categories ranged from faculty awards, to participation in the school community, with a special award
being the Queen Elizabeth I Foundation Award for Outstanding Student and each winner was truly deserving!
We hope you all have a wonderful summer holiday and we will see you back being your amazing selves in
September.

Year 11 and 13 Leavers assembl ies 2018
Farewell to Year 13...
On 25 May, our Year 13 students said their final farewells to the school and the VIth Form after their two years
of study. After celebrating together at the Spring Ball in May, students spent a Friday afternoon reminiscing
about their time together here at Stourport in a special leavers’ assembly, accompanied with plenty of well-
deserved pizza and a variety of desserts. Many of our students now look ahead to their next step, where they
move onto jobs, apprenticeships and universities, where we are sure they will enjoy much success. From
everyone at SHS, we would like to wish all our leaving students good luck for the future.
Year 13 are not the only students we are bidding farewell to, as our international students’ time at SHS has also
come to an end. During the year, we have been joined by Peter Dravecky, Lars Kreulen, Anne Heinemann,
Klara Thein and Gabrielle Cipriani, all of whom embarked upon a period of education with us at Stourport VIth
Form. It has been a pleasure to have such wonderful students study with us from around the world and it is
safe to say they have also loved the experience. Peter summed up his time here as ‘an unforgettable and life
changing experience. After a year in a different country, it makes you
think differently about the world and view the world in a different way.’
Peter has left behind many fantastic new friends, including both SHS
students and other international students, which shows why this
experience offers youngsters so much and is so special. Klara joined us
from Germany and had lots of praise for Stourport and everybody here.
She said ‘the students and the teachers have been my favourite part of the
whole experience. We hope to see them again in the future!
Year 11 Prom
Friday 6th July saw us say a final goodbye to out Year 11 students before they embark on their post 16 pathways. The prom, held at The Mecure Hotel in Bewdley, was a huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by staff and students alike. From the quirky and stylish arrivals to the selfies and awards; all students presented themselves perfectly and as a result had the most amazing time. The theme for the evening, as chosen by the students, was 'The Oscars' which saw many students win awards such as 'Most Likely to Win an Olympic Medal' and 'Most Likely to Win the Lottery but lose the Ticket'. Huge thanks must go out to the prom committee for helping organising what was in the opinion of many the best prom we have ever held at Stourport High School.

Kickboxing Champions Three SHS students took part in the ICO World Championships Kick Boxing
Contest in Solihull on 20 October 2017. We are very proud to say that Shannon
Smith 11ND came second in her category with Jack Gwillam 9CG and Mia Clarke
10JH also doing well in their categories.
All three students train at the Stourport Kickboxing UK Club and have been training hard after school for this
event. Shannon told us that she competed in a mat light continuous category and was also put in for two
weight categories: one was -65kg where she won her first fight and lost her second. She then went on to fight
for the bronze medal which she also lost. At -60kg Shannon won her first fight, lost her second which resulted
Under 14 UK National Youth Circuit Cycling Champion.
Alex Barker 9GB has recently become Under 14 UK National Youth Circuit Champion. He received his award as this year’s HSBC UK National Youth Circuit Championships were part of the Scarborough Festival of Cycling at the Oliver’s Mount Circuit, high above the town.
Each race started with four or five laps of the fast, 2.1km top circuit before diverting on to the 3.9km full circuit – with its brutal climb back up to the summit truly testing the riders on a sweltering day in Yorkshire.
A fantastic achievement for Alex, we look forward to supporting him and watching his talent for the sport progress!
Rounders Champions
A huge congratulations to our Year 7 girls rounders team. They
have been smashing the season so far and have been crowned
the champions of the league! The girls’ dedication, team work
and motivation has ensured their win of every game they have
played. A massive well done to Laura Stewart (7ES), Annie
Clayton (7Cb), Chloe Wilcox (7Cb), Holly Taylor (7PD), Alice
Smith (7PS), Gabby Evans, (7VR), Ayla Barratt (7PS), Lauren
Cooper (7PS), Lauren Arnold (7JB), Frankie Taft (7PD), Amelia
Freeman (7PS) and Jasmine Brooks (7PS). Unfortunately,
Codey Pulling (7Cb) couldn’t attend the photo, but was still a
vital member of the team!
County Athletic Trials
Saturday 9th June saw a select few of our best athletes attend the County
Trials at Nunnery Wood. It was a tough day for all, but all our participants
did exceptionally well in their chosen field! Congratulations to Ella Dew
(9EP), coming 1st in hurdles, Alannah Moore (11MW), coming 1st in javelin,
Ben Ward (9Dc) for coming 3rd in 100m and Hayley Smith (10JH) and
Hannah Telling (8Hr) for coming 2nd and 3rd in hammer. All five of these
sportspeople will proceed to the Inter County Trials this coming Saturday. A
huge SHS congratulations to all and we look forward to hearing more of
your success!

Football Tour to Duisburg
On Saturday 21 October 54 students embarked on a five
day football tour to Duisburg in Germany. The tour was
organised to reward these students for regularly represent-
ing the school to a high standard and to give them the op-
portunity to play football against foreign opposition in a
foreign country.
The trip included a bowling and pizza evening; two fixtures
against local teams; two 90 minute training sessions; a tour of Signal Iduna Park Stadium, the home of Borussia
Dortmund, and entry to the Borusseum, the Club’s museum; as well as trips to Phantasialand Theme Park and
the AQUApark in Oberhausen. All teams were successful with the ‘A’ team winning convincingly in both of their
fixtures.
The group were also lucky enough to watch a Bundesliga match between FC Köln and Werder Bremen before
returning to Stourport safe and sound on Wednesday evening.
A special mention to Hayley Smith (10JH) who at the event improved
significantly on her personal best distance. Last year her best throw of the
season came at The Mason Trophy where she recorded 22m 15cm. Hayley
has since put a lot of time and dedication into her sport, measuring a new
personal best of 26.97m and all three of her throws at the county event
were longer than this, showing off her impressive skills. Hayley finished the
competition not only finishing 2nd, but with a new personal best of 30.27m!
We wish Hayley and her team mates the best of luck moving forward with
the competition!
Ella’s Athletics!
Some more fantastic sporting news from one of our Year 9 students. Ella
Dew (9EP) took part in the English Schools’ Regional County combined
athletics at Abingdon. Ella did fantastically in representing Hereford &
Worcester, coming 11th overall—a brilliant achievement for a regional
event! Ella competed in five events over the course of the day, including
75m hurdles, shot putt, high jump, long jump and 800m. Well done Ella!

Year 7 Experiences
‘This year I have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in
cricket for the school. I have loved every moment
of it. Throughout my time at SHS, I have also
loved being involved in the athletic team and we
even made it to the School Games. I have
competed against a lot of great schools such as
King Charles I, Bewdley School and more. In Year
8, I hope to continue my sporting career at SHS!’ -
Josh Roberts 7ES
‘The schools football team is a great place to
make friends and to get plenty of praise.
This year, the Year 7 team won the school
league! In Year 8, I would love to continue
in the school football team, but I am also
looking forward to participating in other
sports, such as cricket.’ - Leo Vlad 7ES

Duke of Ed inburgh
The Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award is something that SHS have been running
successfully for several years. This year, 68 Year 10 pupils participated in the qualification,
which ended with a tough expedition over the Malvern Hills. All groups passed their final
expedition where they were assessed on their navigation, team work, camp craft and their
cooking. The pupils also have to learn a new skill be physically active and volunteer to
support others. Preparations for this expedition have been taking place over the past
academic year, with students practising their cooking skills over campfires at school,
several training walks to get them used to carrying their equipment.
Students have also spent time learning the importance of the Highway and
Countryside Code and being aware of First Aid and Emergency
Procedures. This is a fantastic qualification that shows off students’
commitment and practical skills; we look forward to welcoming next year’s
cohort! A massive thank you to Mrs Hammond, Mr Parry, Mrs Cooper and
all the other staff members that supported at various points.

Drama Enrichment
Our drama enrichment students are a variety of ages across the whole school with varying experience and
abilities. Nonetheless, they have been working really hard since September towards a performance of their
monologues where they will stand and perform a piece on their own which is quite an achievement, as any
teacher will tell you if they are asked to take an assembly! To have spent time and effort to make the piece
interesting to an audience; to have created a character; to have developed their voices, body language and
gestures appropriately for the character; all these things are an indication of how much progress every student
who has been following the Monologues / Duologues Enrichment course has achieved. Mrs Cooke, leading the
drama enrichment sessions said “I am so very proud of them and their performances but more by their support of
each other in this journey so far. This supportive encouraging atmosphere in which they work has made them all
feel comfortable to perform so well.” Many students have achieved a Gold standard in their performance which is
outstanding and all students are to be proud of their achievement. The support of the VIth Form students who
have each taken a turn to lead the warm up sessions every week has been invaluable. They have worked
individually with the younger students, imparting their knowledge. Mrs Cooke added “Seeing the fruits of their
encouragement has been wonderful to witness. What an amazing group, and how lucky we all are to have the
opportunity to undertake this course and experience together! “
Enrichment on a Wednesday afternoon was a new concept this year and has gone down really well over the past three terms. Students have been given the opportunity to participate in several clubs on a Wednesday afternoon, all lead by specialist subject leaders. Choices have included a variety of sporting activities, drama, craft and art club and British Sign Language to name a few, all designed to enrich the opportunities of our students. Students and staff have shared their experiences on what has been a favourite addition to this academic year.

Codojo Enrichment
In Coderdojo during enrichment, students have had
the opportunity to create several games using a
programme called ‘Scratch’. Students spent time
learning and experimenting with new coding, using the
programme Google CS for tutorials and helping each
other. ‘I really enjoyed it because it’s fun and I learnt new
things and was very educational.’ (Jacob Harrod 7PS) ‘Its
extremely fun, one of the best enrichments I’ve done. It
was great because you were free to experiment with
whatever interested you.’ (Ali Jones 7Cb)
Edible Explorers
Our food based enrichment was an absolute
hit with students who are passionate about
making and experimenting with different
foods. They had the opportunity to make a
wide variety of food, ranging from starters,
to main courses, to desserts. ‘I really
enjoyed edible explorers because it was a
nice, relazing environment to be in and cook
ing. We cooked a range of different foods
such as cheese twists, summer pudding,
flapjacks, parmesan nuggets and more.
What made it even better was that the
teacher put songs on whilst we were
cooking to make it an even better
enrichment session.’ (Jenna Martin (7VR)
Crochet Club for Charity
During Enrichment with Mrs Round and Mrs
Henderson, students have been making baby
blankets for the Neonatal Unit at Worcestershire
Royal Hospital; a fantastic faculty that has also
prompted generous donations from the general
public. Our crochet club have been working
their socks off to create as many blankets as
they can over the past term, with fantastic
results. Pictured are Kayleigh Kilgour (8Hr) and
Louise Loveridge (7Wb) handing over the
finished blankets to Rebecca Hogan, an ex-
student, now Midwife from Worcestershire
Royal. We are very proud of the students for
their hard work and determination and we hope
that this gesture will support the amazing work
that the staff in the Neonatal Unit do every day.
A fitting event for our wonderful students, who
have had the opportunity to learn more about
the fantastic job the NHS staff do, as we
celebrated their 70th birthday in recent weeks.
SHS Life Summer 2018 - 14
On Tuesday 20 March English teacher Miss Derrick and ALF Manager Mrs Stewart took 13 avid readers to
the Award Ceremony for the ‘Worcestershire Teen Book Awards 2018’ at County Hall in Worcester. The
whole process started back in November 2017 when the students had the opportunity to ‘speed-read’ 30
books that had been published in the previous 12 months, and vote for their six favourites. This was
repeated in schools and public libraries across the County until the final six were chosen.
The students had until early March 2018 to read all six books and decide which was their favourite and
when the votes across the County were combined we had a winner. The winning title this year was ‘I have
no secrets’ by Penny Joelson. The story tells of a girl called Jemma knows who committed the murder. She
knows because the murderer told her but she cannot tell anyone. Fourteen-year-old Jemma has severe
cerebral palsy and is unable to communicate or move. She relies on her family and carer for everything yet
she has a sharp brain and inquisitive nature, which means she knows all sorts of things about everyone.
However, when she is confronted with this terrible secret, she is utterly powerless to do anything.
Although that might be about to change… We will leave the rest of the story to you to pick up a copy at
Alf and find out what happens.
As part of the Awards Ceremony our students took part in a quiz to test their knowledge of the six books
and the authors. The SHS team came 3rd and acquitted themselves brilliantly. They heard a very
entertaining talk by the author Chris Bradford about his books and the fact that as part of his research for
his latest series he trained as a bodyguard. The students also heard a poem from the Worcestershire
Young Poet Laureate. Students then had the opportunity to buy Chris Bradford’s book and get them signed
before enjoying some cake.
The students had a wonderful day celebrating their love of reading and behaved in an exemplary manner:
Olivia Calder 7ES, Isabel Clewitt 7ES, Jack Collins 7JB, Poppy Davies 7PD, Noah Davison 7PS, Charlie Facey
7PD, Esme Hammerton 7Bd, Ema Ivancova 7VR, Drewe Norwood 7JB, Frankie Taft 7PD, Holly Taylor 7PD,

Our Science Ambassadors have been working extremely hard alongside Mrs
Gallagher this year. In recent weeks, they have put their skills to the test in
delivering some amazing activities based around space and astronaut
physics to Year 5 students from some of our feeder primary schools.
The ambassadors strategically demonstrated the activities, provided much
needed encouragement, showcased their ability to work excellently as a
team and ended the sessions asking scientific questions to test what they
had learnt over the afternoon! The girls were enthusiastic, dedicated and
really put the Year 5 students at ease about coming up to SHS in the next
few years. A massive thank you to Maddy and Lily Speller-Parkin (8Hr &
8LP), Ella Tunley (8St), Grace Leon (8RU), Mollie Kilgour (8LM), Katy
Jennings (8RU)and Anaya Khan (8St) for their fabulous love of
science, Miss Russell for organising the afternoon and Mrs Gallagher
for offering her science skills!
After completing the day with The Physics Institute January 25th,
they ambassadors delivered activities for Science week in March.
The ambassadors also delivered Physics activities with The Physics
Institute for the Year 5 festival in conjunction with Stourport primary,
Hartlebury and Sytchampton first school among others. They also
supported the Year 6 induction day Monday 9th July by helping to
support students with their investigations. Mrs Gallagher said they
have really been amazing this year - well done Science Ambassadors.

Iceland Trip
Once again, our geography
faculty students have
returned from their once-in-a
-lifetime trip to Iceland full
of stories of their adventures. After landing in Iceland,
students dropped their bags off at the hotel before a short
tour around the bay and to a local church. Later that
same evening the group visited Laugardalur Swimming
Pool in Reykjavik to enjoy a heated outdoor swim, hot
tubs, whirlpools and large waterslide.
Over the next 3 days, the students tour of the country
included 3 waterfalls including Seljalandsfoss and
Skógafoss Gullfoss - a beautiful waterfall known as the
golden waterfall with thousands of tons of icy glacial water
thundering down into a deep canyon; a glacier; a volcanic
crater with a lake; a geothermal power plant; the Krýsuvik
sulphuric mud pools; and the Northern Lights or Aurora
Borealis. On the way home to the airport, the group
visited the Blue Lagoon - a natural pool heated by the
volcanic rocks underneath the ground.
The trip once again proved to be a fantastic experience for
all and a lifetime of memories to treasure.
French Exchange Trip
On Wednesday 11 October a group of our Modern Foreign
Language students embarked on a week-long visit to
Villeneuve-le-Roi, near Paris, staying with host families at
our partner school, Collège Jean Macé.
This was an exciting opportunity for students to spend
time with a French family to improve speaking and
listening skills whilst also having huge personal, cultural
and academic benefits. We have established strong links
with Collège Jean Macé and the town of Villeneuve-le-Roi
through the Stourport Twinning Association, reviving the
French Exchange Programme which we feel is an
important development with huge benefits for our students
now and in the future.
In addition to spending lots of time in classes at Collège
Jean Macé, a fantastic itinerary was planned for students
to visit famous attractions including Chateau de Versailles,
the Basilica of the Sacré-Coeur and climbing to the top of
l’arc de Triomphe.
In return for their kindness and hospitality, SHS families
played host to the students and their teachers during May
2018. We provided them with a true experience of British
culture; taking them

Paris Trip
In the early hours of Friday 16 February, 4 staff and 37 excited students set off for Paris, France as part of their
Modern Foreign Languages studies. For many this was the first trip overseas without their families and one of our
aims is to improve students’ resilience and independence.
The group stayed at Le Château de la Grande Romaine which has a wonderful range of facilities including football
pitches, swimming pool, a games room and shop.
During the trip the students climbed the 704 steps to level 2 of the Eiffel Tower, enjoyed a boat trip along the
River Seine and visited the tourist shops in Montmatre and a wonderful market where students took the
opportunity to buy gifts and souvenirs for their families.
The final day was spent at Disneyland followed by a French themed evening tasting traditional dishes such as
snails. All students enjoyed a well-earned rest on the coach and ferry journey home after a fabulous trip with
many unforgettable experiences.
German Christmas Market
On Wednesday 29th November, four staff and over forty students
visited the Frankfurt German Christmas Market in Birmingham.
The market is the biggest outside of Germany and Austria,
welcoming over 6 million visitors each year.
During the course of the day, students enjoyed a range of
German specialities to eat such as Pretzeln, Bratwurst, heisse
Schokolade and the famous Stollen – German Christmas cake.
There were many opportunities to buy Christmas gifts for family
and friends. Particularly popular were Puppen – dolls, wooden
toys and candles. Harleen Channa (9Dc) said ‘the German
market was magical; almost like being in a Winter Wonderland!’
The students were impressed by the atmosphere of the market
and were amazed by the amount of stalls and the diversity of
products sold. A fantastic time was had by all and we cannot
wait to return next year! Frohe Weihnachten!!!

WWI Battlefields trip
Year 9 students Sophie Gallagher and Luke Davison returned from their trip to Ypres,
Belgium in February. They both shared rooms with and made new friends with
students from very diverse schools during the visit. They were both friendly and polite
throughout the trip and set a fantastic example of how excellent SHS students can be.
Sophie took a solitary, respectful moment to lay a poppy at Theipval Memorial and Luke
spent time tracing WWI soldiers from Stourport. They are seen here next to the grave
of William Bridgford who lends his name to one of our Colleges. Sophie and Luke
Think Tank Trip
On Wednesday 10 January Year 7 students joined other students
from our local primary schools, organised by SAET, in a visit to
the Think Tank in Birmingham for an exciting Genetics Day.
In addition to exploring the science museum and experiencing the
fantastic planetarium, students also put
on their white laboratory coats to extract
their own DNA from their cheek cells and
then were able to take it home. Pictured

Year 9 Opening Doors to Business
Over 80 of our year 9 students visited a variety of local employers in
June to learn about the companies and what they do. A huge
thanks to Hereford and Worcestershire Fire and Rescue
Service, OGL Computers, Rotary Creative Print, Stone Manor
Hotel, Beakbane, Community Housing Group, MFG Solicitors,
Whitley Jones Furniture, Avensys Medical Equipment, West
Mercia Police and Elements Hair and Beauty salon. Our
students thoroughly enjoyed all the visits. Caleb Round (9)
visited OGL Computers said ‘…’
Continuing with the business and enterprise theme, on
Tuesday 26 June, 36 of our Year 10 students visited
Kidderminster Academy to take part in a taster day,
where they had classes in a variety of different
subjects including hair and beauty, games design,
fashion and animal care. The day offered our students
the opportunity to experience some potential future
courses and experience within subjects that they are
possibly interested in studying after high school. A
fantastic opportunity for our students to support them
in their future studies.

Women’s FA Cup Final
Mr James, Miss Radio and Mr
Wakefield accompanied 33
SHS students and 2 from
Baxter College to watch arch
rivals Arsenal play Chelsea in
this year’s Women’s FA Cup
Final. For many of the
students this was their first
time visiting Wembley
Stadium and they contributed
towards a new competition
record crowd of 45,423
spectators. Chelsea beat
Arsenal 3 - 1 to take home
their 2nd FA Cup trophy and their
victory has kept alive their hopes
of a domestic double, with only
four more games remaining of
the Women's Super League One
season and only goal difference
separating them and current
league leaders Manchester City.
“Fair is foul and foul is fair…”
Students in Years 9 and 10 in May enjoyed a
fantastic performance of Macbeth at the Royal
Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon
to support their revision. The atmosphere was
brilliant and the play certainly impressed. The
students represented the school really well
and were captivated by the production. The
aim of the trips was for students to appreciate
the true art of Shakespeare by witnessing a
production on stage. Students were
mesmerised by the acting and some were
even quoting along with the characters! Year
10 sat their exam earlier this year and we
look forward to celebrating their excellent
results in August!

Over 1000 students were inspired by the visit of a veteran astronaut as Severn
Academies Educational Trust arranged for Dr Michael Foale, CBE, to visit The
Stourport High School & VIth Form College on Wednesday 31 January.
Born in rural Lincolnshire, Michael graduated from Christ College, Cambridge with a PhD in Astrophysics
and became the first British-born NASA astronaut at the age of 30. Astronaut Michael Foale accumulated a
total of 375 days in orbit in an amazing career that spanned 26 years working in NASA’s Astronaut Corps
and saw him fly on 6 space missions on the Space Shuttle and a Russian rocket. His experience includes
being Commander of the International Space Station (ISS); bringing the Hubble Space Telescope back to
life; and having a major role in saving the Russian ‘Mir’ Space Station as it tumbled out of control around
the earth, following the only collision in outer space. Michael has had a range of senior roles in NASA that
include having been the Deputy Administrator at NASA Headquarters, Chief of the Astronaut Office
Expedition Corps and Assistant Director of the Johnson Space Centre.
Michael’s visit, coordinated through the International Space School
Educational Trust (ISSET), inspired and motivated students, their
families and local businesses during four presentations, bringing the
exploration of space and the unknown to a wider school and
community audience. To many young people NASA and astronauts
represent the pinnacle of human achievement and Michael certainly
instilled the NASA ‘you can do it’ spirit.
This was most certainly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to provide a
significant number of our students and members of our community with a fantastic insight into the
dedication, commitment and endeavour of being an astrophysicist and NASA
astronaut. Many students and teachers commented that Michael was truly
inspirational and his visit has enabled a significant number of our school
community to aspire to great things in their life.
We are extremely grateful to Michael and also Chris Barber, Founder and
Director of the International Space School Educational Trust, in making this
event a reality and to SAET for organising the event in our school. The
evening was sponsored by Worcestershire Aim Higher, Go Serve, Coniston Coaches
and Aspens Services.
We look forward to more of this type of event
in the future for SHS students and our partner
primary school pupils.

Our day out
The grand finale of our week was the 2 night performance of our annual school production “Our Day Out”
by Willy Russell. Originally a TV play back in the 1970’s, the SHS Acting Company created wonderful
characters and entertained the audience with some outstanding portrayals of the teachers and a group of
unruly students on a school trip to the seaside and a zoo.
We would like to applaud everyone who took part, both on stage and behind the scenes, helping with
make-up, costumes, sound and lighting, stage management and front of house. The production was
directed and produced by Mrs Rose, Miss Page and Mr Finlay from the Faculty of Performing Arts and Mr
Holland lending his expertise in English film and media. The team
have worked tirelessly to make this a fantastic experience for the
Gloucestershire University Outreach Session
On Tuesday 10 July, A-Level Film and Media students, as well as those looking to study the
subjects next year, were invited to a session run by Zoe Everson from the University of
Gloucestershire outreach team. They considered what
makes a good film as well as how news stories are
selected and reported.
Students were invited to discuss and share their ideas
about films and the news as well as creating their own
ideas for films drawing on star power, genre and the
seven basic plots. Students enjoyed the two workshops
which developed their knowledge and understanding of
their courses in a broad and interesting way.
Canoeing For Charity
We would like to congratulate Messrs Evans, Gleeson and Brazier for taking
part in a 50 mile down river canoe trip from Bridgnorth to Tewkesbury to
raise money in the name of Cancer Research.
The team set themselves a target of £2,000 and they managed to smash this raising an amazing total of
£6,500. The canoeists would like to thank everyone for their generosity and kindness in supporting their
challenge and chosen charity. This is such a fantastic example to set to our students.

Groundforce Day at St Bart’s
Nine SHS Students donned their wellington boots, grabbed a garden spade or
fork and battled against the weeds and long grass in the school garden at St
Bartholomew’s Primary School during October. Guided by Mrs Kelly, the group
along with students from Baxter College, volunteered to help clear an overgrown
garden with six large raised beds. VIth Form students Louisa Garland and
Rebecca Smith tackled a very dusty and disorganised potting shed.
St Bartholomew’s plans to grow their own fruit and vegetables in the spring and
the ground work undertaken by our older students has helped greatly in making
this a lot more achievable.
Well done to our students pictured above with their garden tools for doing such
a fantastic job: Winnie O’Connor 8SW, Monica Watson 10IG, Kayleigh Kilgour

Darkins 8SW, Tom Lench 8LP, Kieran Wager 8LP, Louisa Garland 12TC and

Raising Money for Bayley
Back in February, with your help, we raised money for one of our Year 9
students, Bayley Owen, who is suffering from Leukaemia. In total students and
staff raised a brilliant £1,087. Bayley's family have been building a 'man cave'
for his lengthy recovery and this project is progressing well. Bayley and his
family have asked that the money raised at school is donated to the purpose-
built facility known as Ronald McDonald House in Birmingham where Bayley's family stayed during his
treatment. The charity does amazing work and provides a fantastic place to stay as well as experienced staff to
support families through difficult times. Dean Owen, Bayley's father, visited Stourport High School to thank all
students and staff for the money raised through a fun run, a cake sale run by Mrs Gallagher and her Year 9 tutor
group and a cookie sale run by Mrs Bhatoe and her Year 9 business class. In addition, Dean would like to give an
extra special thank you to Harleen Channa 9RW who collected over £150 in her family's shop, Esme Probert 9BH for
donating £100 and Ryan Edwards 7WB, who is also a family friend, for running an epic 33 laps during the fun
run. Dean would like to recognise Will Owen and Josh Wright both from 9RW for being great friends to Bayley and
coming up with fundraising ideas. Mrs Cooke has organised a box of gifts which a number of students and staff have
contributed to and we look forward to presenting this to Bayley soon.
Bayley is battling on with his treatment and everyone at Stourport High School wishes him all the best. It will be a
long road to recovery and we look forward to welcoming him back to school when he is feeling better. Mr and Mrs
Owen, their daughter Skye in 7Bd and the rest of the family are so grateful for all the support and would like to
extend their thanks to everyone in school community for their kind wishes and donations. We are honoured to be
able to donate the money raised in school to such a worthy cause on behalf of Bayley and his family.

Nags Barbarians Group
A message from Mr Evans, who has worked tirelessly to raise money with the Nags
Barbarians Group for Cancer Research has spoken about his next project – raising
£100,000 for charity!
‘The Nags Barbarians group is currently on £77000 total raised for Cancer Research UK.
Next year, several SHS staff members have expressed an interest to join The Nags on our next venture to climb Snowdon, but for some it won't be just once! I have calculated that you need to climb Snowdon 8 times to be equivalent to Everest. Therefore we will be creating teams of 8, 4 and 2 who will collectively climb Snowdon the required eight times. Some of the group are considering the option of going it alone and climbing the mountain 8 times on their own over three days!!! This is planned for 2019, although actual dates are still to be confirmed. In 2020 I am hoping to bring the rugby team out to my place in Spain to play a local team there, although two years away there has been so much interest (200+) that we are looking into hiring our own airliner to take us there privately. With both these events we are hoping to pass £100k in the next two years for our chosen charity. Can I please take this opportunity to offer a huge thank you to all SHS staff and students who have taken part, sponsored us and put money in our buckets to date.’
