The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce has a mission to actively promote, educate and support

the business community, to maximize a healthy economy and provide community leadership.

It has truly been a pleasure to work with the Chamber staff and wonderful volunteers at

the Visitor Information Center (VIC). I would like to publicly thank Jeri Smith for her 16 years as of ce administrator and wish her and Ron all the best in their much-deserved retirement.

For such a small community, it is amazing how many wonderful folks give their time and energy to the Chamber. There is not much going on in the community that either the Chamber or a Chamber Board member is not involved in to some level or another.

I was very fortunate to have Christy Rookard as my Past President, who always offered words of wise counsel and was willing to cheerfully do any task asked of her. This is the role I shall emulate for our new President, Diane Fatzinger. Diane works in merchandizing at Co-Op

Farm and Garden, so if you have not had chance to meet her, I am sure you will at upcoming Chamber events. The volunteer Board is comprised of a wide variety of folks, from business owners, managers, self-employed people and regular employees.

Serving on the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors for the past ve years has been an invaluable experience. This experience has given me a strong appreciation of the time and effort that Board Members commit to not only at the Chamber, but in all volunteer Board member positions in our community. One thing in particular stands out most to me: the old adage, You get out of something, what you put into it. My advice to the upcoming Board and Chamber members is to involve yourself. There are so many choices. Join a committee, attend a luncheon or After Hours event to network; take advantage of the marketing opportunities through the Chamber website, publications and visitors center; volunteer your time and expertise, and most of all-have fun! You will reap the rewards accordingly. Thank you to all who have supported me and the Chamber during my tenure on the Board. I believe the Chamber does good things for our community and I look forward to staying involved as a member.

As a Chamber, we are all inclusive and anyone is welcome to participate in meetings and events.

The Chamber also has an informal group of members who are Courtesy Board members. They are welcome to attend all board and committee meetings, with the exception of the Executive Committee meeting. Their opinions can be voiced; they have all the same rights of the Board members, except they cant vote. This role is a great way to learn more about the Chamber and can easily ll a vacant position if one becomes available; it is invaluable to have a person who is familiar with the Chamber Board ready to ll a role. Whether you are not a member, or just pay your dues and dont attend lunches or other networking events, or if you are highly involved, please consider joining the Board as a Courtesy Board member.

A look back and a look forward to 2015The Sequim Chamber just closed the books yet again on another very successful

and eventful year. It goes without saying that serving as Executive Director of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber is a very robust role; however, a rewarding position

to ful ll in our community! It is with much appreciation I thank the Chamber Board, our awesome members, devoted staff and bighearted volunteers for their dedication of time, energy and support to the Chamber in 2014. As we enter the new year, we welcome three new Board members: Jim Weatherly, Jamestown SKlallam Tribe; Heather Wells, Sound Community Bank, and Debra Pitts, of Ballymore Consulting. We also say goodbye to our Board Member of the Year in 2013, Christy Rookard First Federal; and Michele Sorrentino of Sound Community Bank as they completed their terms in 2014. We are fortunate to live

in a community with endearing, devoted and compassionate members. Thank you; the Chamber and Visitor Information Center couldnt exist without such devoted individuals.

It is this Chambers mission to advance and promote business by providing a forum to address issues and to unite and support our membership and community through programs, events and services. This year weve done just that by working together, cultivating a very cohesive and strong bond through our committees and projects. In addition, we added 54 new Chamber members to the roster.

The Sequim Merchants group committee banded together and worked hard to beautify our downtown for the holidays, once again creating a tree-lighting ceremony and events related to Santas arrival, as well as supporting our retail sector in a Shop Local focus! The 8th annual Business Showcase Expo with the theme Passport to Success was a resounding achievement thanks to the support of our event sponsors, vendors, attendees and the Chamber Board volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly on refocusing this event. This expo provides a unique forum for Chamber members to showcase their products and services to the community and to network with valuable

local resources. The Shiso City Sister city visit in 2014 proved to be a wonderful experience for

the host families and students. In September, 10 students traveled to Sequim from Shiso, Japan, staying with host families and attending classes at Sequim High School while their three chaperones were escorted to local sites and provided tours of Sequim schools, medical facilities and a retirement community. In October, seven Sequim students embarked on a nine-day tour of Japan culminating in a visit to Shiso where they were guests of the very students they had hosted in Sequim. Student recruitment already is under way to recruit eighth- and ninth-graders for 2015s exchange program.

And to round out the year, the Sequim Community Chorus blessed the community again with its 30th annual performance during the Christmas holidays.

The Chamber continued its marketing efforts through social media, providing one-stop information on the Chamber website and Facebook pages. The updated Chamber website and event calendar have proved to be an excellent tool in providing faster search abilities, adding a new mobile site last year, and the ability to offer online payments via our website as well.

I also would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the 119th Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty Court: Queen Katey Tapia, Princess Judi Villella, Princess Kaylee Ditlefsen and Princess Kristina Holtrop, for their dedication and service to the festival, the Chamber and the entire community throughout the year. This court served with poise and professionalism as wonderful ambassadors for Sequim while attending parades and events throughout Western Washington.

In addition to expanding the successful activities and events of 2014, the Chamber committees have some exciting new ideas and opportunities to launch. Please remember, anyone is welcome to participate in one of our committees. Please see page 8 for a list of opportunities to get involved! Again, working together makes a huge difference and creates community of which everyone bene ts.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all businesses, organizations and individuals who sponsored a Sequim ower basket! Each year, Chamber board member Emily Westcott works in collaboration with the Sequim School District agriculture class and the City of Sequim to create more than 100 ower baskets to decorate downtown Sequim.

The agriculture class selects the ower theme, buys the seeds and starter plants, and prepares the baskets. The city crews install the baskets and then water and fertilize the baskets until nature dictates their removal. From May through September, visitors from around the world and local residents enjoy these proli c blooming baskets. The program has been under way for more than 20 years and is a shining example of teamwork!

The proceeds from the sponsors also fund the annual holiday lights that magically appear each year at the Bank of America Park and Centennial Place at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street. This magical corner plays host to Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Irrigation Festival Royalty elves each year along with the musical talent of the Sequim City Band and a host of other entertainment.

In addition to the baskets and holiday lights, sponsorship of the baskets contributes to a variety of events designed to encourage visitors to shop in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area. The Chamber extends its sincere appreciation to all ower basket sponsors and their support for the program which signi cantly contributes to maintaining the hometown atmosphere we enjoy!

School, created the winning festival button design during a contest open to all elementary students. The Royal Court of Queen Katey Tapia and Princesses Judi Villella, Kaylee Ditlefsen and Kristina Holtrop represented the Irrigation Festival and the city of Sequim in parades, civic events and festivals throughout the year with professionalism, dedication and high spirits. They made appearances around town to represent the Irrigation Festival, traveled with the oat around Western Washington to other community parades and also performed community service in the area.

Preparations are now being made for the 120th Sequim Irrigation Festival. The theme 120 Fun a Plenty

will be used throughout the festival. The 2015 logo was again created by logo designer Laura Friedkin. This years festival button contest is open to the elementary school students and the winner will be announced in early 2015.

The festival buttons will then be sold by the fth-graders from the Sequim School District in late March.

The Irrigation Festival started as a celebration of the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the valley. It was as much a commemoration of the ditches as it was of the community that made it happen. Ever since that rst picnic in 1896, the Sequim Irrigation Festival has been a celebration of, for and about this wonderful community in which we live.

The Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuously running festival in Washington, spans two weekends in early May and most of the events are free to the community and visitors. The festival has grown over the past few years and it is all due to the generosity of the businesses and individuals of the Sequim/Port Angeles area. While the Irrigation Festival is a community festival that is overseen by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, it receives no funding from the Chamber. The festival is fully self-supporting and relies on sponsorships, donations (both monetary and in-kind), fundraising and the many volunteers who help the festival to make it successful.

are Joe and Tawana Borden. The Sequim Pioneer Association selected Art Rogers and Helen Bucher as the Grand Pioneers and Jeff Shold and Margie Russell-Lester as the Honorary Pioneers.

The building of the new oat to represent the theme began after the last parade in October and will be ready for the rst parade in mid-April. Additionally, the search for the 2015 royal court began in November and culminates in mid-February with the royalty pageant. This scholarship event selects the high school students that will represent Sequim around Western Washington at the parades they attend. At the end of March, the Kick Off Dinner and Auction will be held as a fundraiser for the festival, where donated items and the festival pins are auctioned.

The 120th Sequim Irrigation Festival will take place during May 1-10, with many events; most which are free.

Crazy Callen Weekend in Downtown Sequim (May 1-3) including the First Friday Art Walk, Crazy Daze Breakfast, Kids Parade and Street Fair

Grand Finale Weekend in Downtown Sequim (May 7-10) including the Grand Parade, Car Parade and Show n Shine, Logging Show, Strongman Competition, Carnival and Dungeness River Center Run

Additionally the Sequim High School Operetta and the Sequim Arts Juried Arts Show run the entire length of the festival

Community Events and Festivals ...

The Sequim area is blessed with an abundance of events and festivals throughout the year. Each event contributes its own unique value to our community as a great place to live. These events and festivals not only bring in visitors to support our local economy, they also provide our residents with enjoyable activities and entertainment, enriching our lives as we take the opportunity to meet our neighbors and make new friends.

May 2014 hosted the 119th Annual Irrigation Festival to Sequim Mountains to Sea A Pristine Place to Be. As the longest continuous festival in Washington, the Irrigation Festival honors both our pioneers who had the foresight to call Sequim home but also the initiative to bring irrigation to the land to support our growing community.

May 2015 will host the 120th Irrigation Festival with the theme of 120 Fun A Plenty. As a Chamber-sponsored community event, everyone is encouraged to participate and enjoy the festivities!

Lavender Weekend, produced by the Sequim Lavender Growers Association and the Sequim Lavender Farmers Association, continues to be the largest tourist-destination festival in the Sequim area and has earned Sequim the of cial designation as The Lavender Capital of North America. Each and every July, more than 20,000 people visit the lavender

farms on tour as well as participate in the multitude of events taking place during that third weekend of July. From street fairs to car, driftwood and quilt shows, art tours and free musical entertainment on every corner, there were festival activities for every member of the family to enjoy.

Nowhere else in this part of the world offers these events and rural attractions during the third weekend in July. Several Chamber members participate in the farm tours and activities and the Visitor Information Center is especially busy during July. The Chamber staff and volunteers contribute substantial time

and energy to assisting visitors, selling festival farm entry buttons and commemorative posters, answering questions, giving directions and doing their best to make each and every visitor feel very welcomed in our unique community.

The Sequim Community Choir celebrated its 30th anniversary in December 2014 and performed its annual Christmas concerts to full houses of local residents and community visitors.

Business Showcase ExpoMeeting Date: As neededThe Eighth Annual Business Showcase Expo was a

tremendous success! See page 12 for more complete information.

Merchants GroupCo-chairs Vickie Oen and Liz Harper The Sequim Merchants Group committee meets the third

Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m., locations alternate each month between different host merchants. The Merchants Group once again has continued to grow in attendance. Chamber membership is not required, and if your business is interested in becoming involved, call the Chamber to be added the e-mail list. Among the many successful projects the group accomplished are the following:

The mystery game called Whodunnit? which was patterned after the game Clue, took place for the second year in a row during Januarys First Friday. The game helped to create a fun night of late shopping which encouraged shoppers to visit a variety of stores. The theme was Amelia Airheart with Emily Westcott as the principal character.

The prize included a two-night stay at the Purple Haze Lavender Farm House, a mystery book from Paci c Mist Books, an oil painting set from The Colors of Sequim, a 5-inch dessert cake from That Takes the Cake, two silver coins from the citys centennial and gift certi cates at Wind Rose Cellars, Solar City, Dominos Pizza, Sunshine Cafe and Nourish Cafe.It proved once again to be very successful and has now become an annual January event.

In March, once again several of the merchants put together gift bags that were presented to the Irrigation Festival Royalty at their annual Kick-Off dinner. This also has become a yearly tradition.

In April the merchants put on another fun game designed to encourage shoppers to visit a variety of stores with Birdfest Birdquest. In partnership with the Dungeness River Audubon Society and the art class at Sequim High School, 10 stores hosted a bird sculpture created by the students. There was a game card that required participants to match the bird with the correct store. This was a very successful event and great exposure for the art students as well. The winner won a birds-eye view ight with Emily Westcott. The Merchants group looks forward to continuation of this as an annual event.

May brought the Irrigation Festival in which the merchants displayed student art entries for the festivals button contest. Many families visited downtown stores in order to see their childs artwork on display. Merchants and families alike enjoyed the moving of the Kiddies Parade back to Washington Street.

In July, during Sequim Lavender Weekend, the merchants decorated the bus stops in downtown Sequim and spruced up the down town with the addition of 150 lavender ags. Many visitors and Sequim residents commented on how festive the downtown looked.

In October, the merchants opened their doors to all the wonderful trick o treaters and gave away bucketfuls of candy!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving the merchants welcomed Santa and Mrs. Claus to town at Centennial Place, by very large reindeer complete with a great tractor and sleigh. With the help of the City of Sequim (and a lot of help

2014 Committees from Emily Westcott and her elves) a large tree was beautifully decorated with hundreds of lights. The downtown merchants held a tree-lighting ceremony and light-counting contest complete with gift certi cate from many of the stores. On that same Saturday many of the merchants hosted open houses complete with holiday refreshments and special prizes or sales.

The merchants also kicked off a new scavenger hunt on Dec. 6 for children ages 5-12 called Elk on the Shelf which was a play on Elf on the Shelf with prizes for the three age groups being donated by local merchants, The Co-Op Farm and Garden, Colors of Sequim, Dungeness Kids, Dungeness River Audubon Society, Remote Control Hobbies and printing services by UPS. The game was well received and with 20 merchants participating was deemed a great success!

Thursday) at 3 p.m.This has been an amazing year in Chamber Membership.

While the committee took its action plan seriously to streamline the active and non-active members, while touting the features and bene ts of being a Chamber member, we now have a better picture of the Chambers true business membership. The committee was very successful at reaching out to all new and renewing members during its plaque deliveries and made the time to speak one-on-one with most of those businesses. In addition, the staff and Board members had a great time meeting new members and being a visible part of the community we all love so much.

This years 8th Annual Business Showcase, formally the B2B, was a grand success.

The theme was the Passport to Success and with the change in format, the educational Chamber Bene t exhibits and the interaction with all the vendor businesses, the Chamber couldnt have asked for a better response. It was an amazing opportunity to further educate the businesses more about the features and bene ts of being a Chamber of Commerce member.

The Chamber is fortunate to have an active and supportive team of Board members and along with the staff, know the importance of the Chamber of Commerces Vision and Mission Statement which is to actively promote, educate and support the business community. The Chambers hope is to see the membership continue to grow in the community.

Tourism CommitteeCommittee Members: Linda Barnfather, Shelli Robb-Kahler

and Barbara Hanna (City of Sequim).With the wonderful weather of springtime and the

comfortable temperatures of summer, Sequim has been the envy of the nation. As a result, we experienced another signi cant increase in LTAC revenue and had an outstanding tourism season. Our Tourism Committee is hard at work making sure we can hit these numbers again.

Over the past year, the Tourism Committee has been working on the idea of an Outdoor/Adventure show and expo. We attended a larger Adventure Expo in Seattle in order to assess if we were heading in the right direction for our area.

After careful consideration, the Chamber has decided not to pursue an Adventure show at this time. The Chamber would need more volunteers and community participation than we think we can deliver and felt that we would hold off for now; however, we always will be vigilant about identifying the best opportunities for tourism and travel to Sequim. The committee continues its focus on Sequim as a wedding destination.

This year Sequim has been the subject of great press in many national publications. Sequim also is beginning to enjoy a bit of fame with popularity of the book, Boys in the Boat. Were anticipating another surge in visitors from this very positive press and promotion.

We always are welcoming new committee members and new ideas. Were looking forward to another record season.

Finance and Fundraising Committee The Finance Committee is responsible for the budget for

the Chamber and Visitor Information Center. Each year the Executive Committee completes a review of the revenues and expenditures, including a determination of cost allocation for those expenses incurred as part of the operation of the VIC.

The Fundraising Committee developed new events and programs to bene t the Chamber and provided support for its ongoing operations in 2014, including themed dances, raf es and events. Interested Chamber members or individuals are welcome to join the committee and help us plan for 2015 and beyond.

Public WorksThe Sequim-Shiso Sister City Association fosters a

friendship and cultural/educational exchange relationship with the city of Shiso, Japan. New members are welcomed. Sequim-Shiso is one of the last few sister city organizations that remains active in Washington.

This year the association participated in the Sequim Irrigation Festival Parade and had booths in the Irrigation Festival and Sequim Lavender Weekend. In September, 10 students traveled to Sequim from Shiso, Japan, staying with host families and attending classes at Sequim High School while their three chaperones were escorted to local sites and provided tours of Sequim Schools, medical facilities and a retirement community. In October, seven Sequim students embarked on a nine-day tour of Japan culminating in a visit to Shiso where they were guests of the very students they had hosted in Sequim. Chaperones were Eric Lewis, Mayor Candace Pratt and former mayor Laura Dubois.

The Friendship Garden at Carrie Blake Park, which is maintained by Sister City association members, recently was improved when the pavilion was refurbished, benches were replaced, the bridge repaired, the stream cleared and the island cleaned with assistance from local citizens and the Rotary Club.

Diane Fatzinger, PresidentThe Co-op Farm and GardenDiane is a farmers daughter and was born and raised on a wheat farm/

cattle ranch in Eastern Montana. Her mom, her two sisters and herself were her dads hired help. In high school, she played basketball, sang in choir and other select vocal ensembles. Diane went on to the University of North Dakota-Williston Center and graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in education; she played varsity volleyball and basketball. Diane continued her education and athletic career at Minot State College and graduated with a

Bachelor of Science degree with a major in K-12 physical education and a minor in psychology. Diane soon discovered teaching was not to her liking. The farm kid in her led her to the do-it-yourself/home improvement industry. She worked for Menards, a Midwest-based DIY chain, Homebase, a West Coast home improvement chain and Justus Lumber, a 100-year-old family owned lumberyard.

Diane also has worked as a carpenter, assisting in the construction of three houses. Diane works for The Co-op Farm and Garden True Value store, and has been with it for the past 12 years. Diane moved to Sequim in 2000. She had hiked and camped in this area and was drawn here for the beauty and small-town feel of Sequim, and is very glad she did! Diane enjoys hiking, biking, woodworking, photography, gardening, reading and walking with her dog. Diane enjoys being a part of the Chambers Merchants Group and hopes she can continue to encourage and inspire local businesses to nd new ways to bring shoppers to their stores and this town.

Phil Castell, Past PresidentCastell InsuranceIn the mid-1990s whileliving in the Seattle area, Phil began a search

for a place less crowded where he could continue to grow his businessin an enjoyable environment with friendly people.Needless to say Sequim won the search hands down. He found the only thing more amazing than the people he met was the wonderful effect of the rain shadow. Driving home from Sequim in brilliant sunshine to the typical Seattle weather was the clinching factor.Phil attributes the friendliness of the people to the fact that

the vast majority of people in Sequim were newcomers themselves at some point and they go out of their way to make new residents feel welcome. Vanessa Fuller, Secretary/TreasurerDungeness River Audubon CenterVanessa was born and raised in Port Angeles. She graduated from

Bellingham Technical College in the Travel and Tourism Program in 2001 and worked in the tourism industry on the Olympic Peninsula since. She works at the Dungeness River Audubon Center but over the years she has gained experience working at the following businesses: Olympic National Park & Forest, Red Lion Hotel Port Angeles, North Olympic Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau and the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of

Meet your Chamber Board of Directors for 2015A Taste of the Peninsula, Olympic Cycling Classic, Strait Thunder Hydro Races, Concerts on the Pier and Chamber activities. If she was not working for an event in Port Angeles, she probably was volunteering for it! Knowing the important role the Chamber plays in the community, she would like to serve as a board member to become more involved in Sequim.

Caroline Stuckey, Co-Chair Finance/FundraisingOlympic Mailing Services

After moving to Sequim in 1994, Caroline Stuckey recognized the need for a local mailing service. In 1997, after furthering her education in accounting, managerial nance and business management, she started Olympic Mailing Services in her home. The rst order of business was to join the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. Creating a home-based business allowed her to be home while raising her daughter, Erin. When Erin graduated high school and left home for college in 2001,

Caroline relocated her business to downtown Sequim. Over the past 18 years, she has cultivated her business by forming strong bonds and friendships with her clients. Caroline brings an expertise to this board that she has acquired over the years from serving on various boards throughout the community: Sequim Chamber, Sequim Irrigation Festival, the New Dungeness Light Station Association, Jazz in the Olympics Society, Sequim Elks, the Museum & Arts Center, International Footprint Association (a nonpro t supporting all local law enforcement and protective services that also raises scholarship funds for youths entering those professions), SHS Band Boosters further, forming this organization in 1999 and obtaining its 501(c)(3) status, and the Washington State Geocaching Association.

She is the creative brains and active hands behind the wildly successful Sequim Centennial Geocaching event. This event showcased the history and culture of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, which is near and dear to her heart. Caroline serves on this board because of her knowledge of the area, her relationships and liaisons among the many sectors of this community and her desire to see Sequim thrive. When she is not spending her time serving her community, she can be found hiking, searching for geocaches, attending monthly book club meetings or enjoying quiet evenings at home.

Heather Wells, Membership ChairSound Community BankHeather Wells was born and raised in Sequim.She currently is a senior

residential loan of cer for Sound Community Bank in Sequim.She has been in the banking for over 16 years.Over the years she has earned numerous awards for high loan production and excellent customer service.Heather previously served on the Membership committee for the Sequim Chamber before becoming a Chamber Board member. She also maintains membership in the Sequim, Port Angeles, and Jefferson County Association of Realtors

as well as the North Peninsula Building Association.

a true native Sequimite. The combination of great childhood memories and the special bene ts that a small community offers are why my husband and I chose to stay and raise our two girls, in the beautiful Sequim valley. Being a small business owner of Race Street Auto Parts with my husband and working as the general manager for Purple Haze Lavender Farm for the past 10 years have given me a rsthand look at the challenges that face

a small farm and a retail business in the Sequim community.I hope to bring to the Chamber Board an enthusiasm for all of Sequim and the great community

that it is, but my particular hope is to work with my fellow small business owners to continue to create a vibrant downtown Sequim retail area that is not only a great place to visit, but a great place to stay and shop!

Linda Barnfather, DirectorOlympic Peninsula AdventuresLinda is a writer, photographer and world traveler. She is a lifelong

resident of Washington and is still very captivated by its inherent natural beauty. When she is not photographing and writing about her life on the Olympic Peninsula, she can be found fully involved in the political world. She currently works as a senior executive legislative assistant to State Rep./House Majority Whip Kevin Van De Wege. During her employment with Van De Wege, she simultaneously served former House Majority Leader

Lynn Kessler for the last year of her term. Linda is past President of the Board of Directors for the Olympic Peninsula Visitors Bureau. She is also a Clallam Conservation District Supervisor, and a member of the League of Women Voters. She enjoys serving and promoting the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Linda is a graduate of Washington State University in liberal arts. In addition, she attended London University on an exchange program in Liberal Arts and Cultures. Linda also holds a certi cate in non- ction writing from the University of Washington. When Linda has down-time, she works avidly as a semi-professional photographer and has contributed to National Geographic. She focuses on capturing images of people, nature and lifestyles from around the world. Both, Linda and her husband, James, enjoy working on their farm and taking advantage of the recreational activities on the Olympic Peninsula.

Mark CouhigNeighbors PublishingMark is an old hand in the newspaper business, with more than 30

years experience as a reporter, editor and publisher.After nishing college in 1976, Couhig was hired as editor of the St. Francisville Democrat; the weekly newspaper covering St. Francisville, La.

His great-grandfather was the editor of the same newspaper (then called The Republican) before the Civil War. In 1984, Couhig and his wife, Linda, started Environmental Compliance Reporter, Inc. When they sold

the business in 1995, it was a national newsletter rm with of ces in four states and Washington, D.C.After selling the company, the Couhigs moved with their daughter Amelia to Angel Fire, N.M.In 2008 and 2009 Couhig was the editor of the local weekly, the Sangre de Cristo Chronicle. The Chronicle was named New Mexicos Best Small Weekly both years he served as editor. The couple moved to Sequim in April 2010 to be closer to family.

Tyler SweetSunland Golf and Country ClubTyler Sweet grew up in Langley, British Columbia, where he studied

business marketing at Douglas College. While attending Douglas, Tyler met his wife, Stephanie, a Sequim native. They decided that Sequim was the perfect place to raise a family and moved to the area in 2004. Tyler was hired at Sunland Golf and Country Club as the assistant golf professional, but it didnt take long to work his way up the ladder to his current position as general manager.

Tyler enjoys volunteering for his local Professional Golfers of America (PGA) chapter and serves on the Marketing and Education Committees. He was past chairman for the WWCPGA Patriot Golf Day supporting Folds of Honor. He also serves on the board for the Country Club Managers Association of America as team captain of the International Matches and member of the Tournament Committee. Tyler has a passion for helping youth learn about the game of golf. He raises money for members of the Boys & Girls Club to attend golf camp every summer and also facilitated the sponsorship and purchase of golf clubs for the B&G Club. Additionally, Tyler has served as a mentor for the Evens Scholarship program helping local Sequim High School students receive nancial assistance for continued education.

In his free time Tyler enjoys all of the best things Olympic Peninsula has to offer: crabbing, biking on the Olympic Discovery Trail, gol ng, and spending time with his wife Stephanie and son Benjamin.

Jamestown SKlallam Tribe Jim Weatherly works within the Jamestown SKlallam Tribes community

and social services department as the scholarship advisement/job training coordinator. He also serves on the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals Board of Directors, representing Region 10: Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington; Canada and APO. Additionally, Jim is the owner of a research and consulting business specializing in grant writing and ARTrepreneurship endeavors. Past partnership projects include

the Clallam Economic Development Council, Olympic Peninsula Tourism Bureau and Catholic Community Services of Western Washington.

As the peninsulas only Certi ed Workforce Development Professional (CWDP), a U.S. Department of Labor-endorsed national accreditation, Jim remains committed to helping unemployed and under-employed populations achieve their goals. A proven leader in community development, his previous positions include AmeriCorps director, Olympic Peninsula; FEMA Disaster Recovery Jobs Program Grant coordinator, Cities of Joplin and Spring eld, Mo.; CDC HIV/AIDS Education and Outreach coordinator, State of Kansas; and Assistant statewide director of WorkForce Partnerships in Missouri. Jim also is an AmeriCorps alumnus, having served both in St. Louis Public Schools as an education mentor and along the Gulf Coast as part of the rst Emergency Response Team deployed during Hurricane Katrina. Other volunteerism includes: Spring eld Missouri Chamber of Commerce Board Mentorship Program, Community Partnership of the Ozarks Homeless Youth Task Force, Spring eld-Greene County Library Advocacy Group, Missouri State University Legacy Leaders, Habitat for Humanity and American Red Cross.

Weatherly grew up in the Ozarks, but has called the Olympic Peninsula home since 2012. Jim and his husband live in Dungeness, along with their three rescue pets: Dylan, Figaro and Bruce Springsteen. Currently, he spends his summers in Connecticut as a volunteer counselor at Paul Newmans The Hole in the Wall Gang Camp for children and families living with terminal illnesses; gives input as part of the Peninsula Young Professionals Network Leadership Team and is a proud United Way of Clallam County donor. He is an avid hiker, reader, road tripper, writer, concertgoer, photographer and lover of all things cheese.

Debra PittsBallymore Consulting Marketing, sales and business consulting are Debras passion. She has

sold software, sponsorships and memberships. She has been vice president of marketing for a community bank, vice president of membership for a multi-state trade association and been a director of Strategic Alliances for a large software company. She has been a customer relationship management consultant for KPMG/Bearing Point, is a certi ed project manager and now has her own consulting business, Ballymore Consulting. Ballymore

Consulting is a rm that advises businesses on the many aspects of growth. The rm takes organizations from vision to execution to transition. Debra is active in the

community as chair of the Irrigation Festival Street Fair and is a member of the Sequim Sunrise Rotary. Debra is enthusiastic about Sequim and looks forward to working with the Chamber.

Nell Clausen Realtor/RE/MAX Fifth Avenue Nell and her husband, Scott, made the decision to move to Sequim in

2003. They feel so very fortunate to live in this community and continue to enjoy all that it has to offer. Nell grew up in Issaquah and has been in sales and marketing her entire life. She currently works as a real estate broker with RE/MAX Fifth Avenue in Sequim. Her community service includes being a Rotarian since 2003, working with Welfare for Animals Guild and volunteering at the annual Sequim Lavender Weekend. Nell has

worked with the Sequim Chamber of Commerce since moving here in 2003 as a representative

of various sales and marketing positions with different companies. Nell understands the value and the commitment the Chamber has to represent the area for both the local businesses and for tourists who visit Sequim.

Deon Kapetan, Irrigation Festival Appointee to the BoardCherry Creek MortgageDeon Kapetan has been involved in the planning of the Irrigation

Festival since 2000, but began participating in the festival long before that by performing in skits at Crazy Daze. She has demonstrated her organizational skills and spirit by co-chairing and then chairing the Crazy Daze Breakfast from 2000-2006. In 2007, she became the chair of the Float Display committee, which manages the parades that the royalty and oat travel to around Western Washington.

Deon and her husband, Kevin, moved to Sequim in 1990 and have been very active in the community and with the festival. Their two children have been involved in the festival from an early age as well. Deon is the sales manager at Cherry Creek Mortgage in Sequim.

Being a volunteer with the festival is very rewarding and fun experience, she said. She is excited about her continued role as festival director and sees lots of new ideas, committee members and opportunities happening over the course of the next year.

We are always adapting to the needs of a growing festival by developing teams to better facilitate the festival. The festival is all about the volunteers and the community. There are 22 committee directors and lots of volunteers who help with each of these festival committees. This includes some changes to this years festival with the development of Crazy Callen Weekend that were looking forward to rolling out. We are able to pull off such an enormous event because of the countless volunteers along with the nancial support of the many local businesses and individuals. The Sequim Irrigation Festival is truly a community event. The festival also gives back to the community in many ways. There are the fun events to celebrate our heritage, as well as our involvement in other community services, such as the care packages for the troops. The Royalty often led the charge for community involvement. They and the Festival Committee have participated in the Relay for Life, collections for the Food Bank and Toys for Tots.

Deon invites anyone who enjoys the festival events, likes working with a close knit team and doing something good for the community to consider joining the Irrigation Festival Committee.

Genaveve Starr - Shiso-Sequim Sister City Appointee to the Board

A second generation Washingtonian and resident of Sequim for more than four decades, Genaveve Starr worked as an administrative assistant before and after moving to the Olympic Peninsula; her last job was at Peninsula College.

Now retired, Genaveve currently serves as a member of the Sequim City Council and is on the boards of Clallam Transit and Sequim-Shiso Sister City Association. She also has pursued a passion for calligraphy and

painting and since 1968 has executed commissions, exhibited work in regional galleries, taught calligraphy, and was a founding member of the Blue Whole Gallery.

For years she has been an active volunteer in many community organizations and admits to being a political junkie. She is married to Karl Stokke and they have a daughter, Mara Stokke.

attended school and took on a job that would be the beginning of her 30-year career in banking. Shelli joined the Chamber as Executive Director in April 2011 and is fortunate to work with an awesome Board of Directors who are passionate about their business community and devoted to its success.

Shelli thoroughly enjoys being active in all of the many aspects of Chamber involvement and enjoys the vast variety her job entails, as well as working closely with business owners and organizations throughout the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. Shelli said, Representing the Sequim Chamber and the community is an energetic task; however, it is a privilege and an honor to do so! The Chamber Board of Directors adopts an annual budget to provide for the most ef cient and productive use of revenues received by the Chamber throughout the year. The board then monitors Chamber revenues and expenditures through a variety of reports provided at each monthly meeting of the Board. The Chambers scal year is based on the calendar year beginning Jan. 1 through Dec. 31. The Chamber is in good financial standing and made healthy additions to its reserves in 2014. The Chamber also has e s t a b l i s h e d e x c i t i n g fundraising goals and ideas for 2015. As indicated in past years, it is important to note that the Chambers annual budget provides for separate accounting for the following activities: Chamber member services, Visitor Information Center operations, Irrigation Festival, Shiso Sister City Program, Flower Basket/Retail Trade, Howard Wood Memorial Scholarship fund and the Sequim Community Choir.

For the eighth year in a row, the Business Showcase a Passport to Success (previously known as Business 2 Business Expo) was a resounding success!More than 40 local businesses and restaurants participated in October 2014. The evening took on a new change in format and provided educational Chamber bene t exhibits, as well as being a fun- lled event, with many vendors providing games and prizes. This annual event highlights the abundance and quality of our local businesses and many great connections always are made during the evenings event.

The Chamber staff and volunteers operate the Visitor Information Center (VIC) seven days a week with closures scheduled only for major holidays. Approximately 90 percent of the Chambers building is allocated to the operations of the VIC.

While some of our visitors arrive at the VIC at some point during their stay in Sequim, many others may not be staying in Sequim but merely passing through to Port Angeles or Hurricane Ridge, heading to Forks or the West End and the ocean beaches, heading toward Seattle or exploring our area during their stay elsewhere on the peninsula. The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to announce Gary Smith of Maple Valley Farms (an independent dairy operation northeast of Sequim), as the 2013 Citizen of the Year. Smith who was nominated by Joe Holtrop.

Gary Smith has unselfishly devoted his life to making Sequim and the Dungeness Valley a better place; a better place to raise a family, a better place to farm and a better place for newcomers to move to. He was elected by his irrigation peers to lead them through challenging times of change in the world of irrigated agriculture. Under Mr.

Smiths leadership, the valleys irrigation districts and companies have implemented conservation measures that have saved many thousands of acre-feet of irrigation water. These conservation achievements have resulted in increased ows in the Dungeness River, thus improved habitat for threatened and endangered salmon.

2013 Community Service Awards were presented to Patsy Mattingley and Al Friess with special thanks for their outstanding dedication to our community.

In addition, R. Leo Shipley was awarded the Bill and Esther Littlejohn Humanitarian Award for his signi cant donation of the 9-acre, 51-space Baywood Village mobile

home community in July to the Sequim Senior Center, now known as the Shipley Center, for a donation valued at $1.7 million.

A committee of previous recipients selected nalists from a pool of Sequim citizens nominated by members of the community. Finalists are chosen based on their history of outstanding volunteer service to the Sequim community. The Chamber and its members and family of the honorees honored Kevin Kennedy, Friess and Larry Klinefelter at its annual Citizen of the Year Luncheon on Feb. 26, 2013, at the Sunland Country Club.

Annually, the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for and determines the Citizen of the Year under the following criteria:

Nominees shall be residents of Eastern Clallam County (primarily Sequim School District area.)

Nominees shall be persons who have performed outstanding service to the community.

Service rendered by nominees shall be above, beyond and generally outside the regular occupation of the nominee.

Two persons working jointly in a community project or projects may be nominated to receive a joint award. Groups of more than two will not be considered.

Persons making nominations should bear in mind the foregoing guidelines, while fully understanding that the selection tribunal must, of necessity be the nal authority. The annual standing deadline for nominations is Jan. 31 at 4 p.m. and applications are available at the Chamber of ce at 1192 E. Washington St.

The Sequim Citizen of the Year 2014 will be announced on Feb. 24 at the Chambers luncheon to be held at Sunland.
