ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2015 3

First I’d like to say what an honor it is to not only have been elected by the members to serve on the Board of Directors but to be selected by my fellow board members as the President for 2016. I want you to know I take this role very seriously and know that it will be a great task to follow in the footsteps of some of the amazing Past Presidents who have lled this role.

I feel very fortunate to be surrounded by some wonderful board members both new and experienced. There already is a buzz of excitement with new ideas on promoting, supporting and growing our membership. An example of new ideas can be found in the Networking Breakfast which I have had the opportunity to attend on many occasions. This networking opportunity started as a small gathering of 4-5 members and has grown substantially in

First I’d like to say what an honor it is

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce has a mission to actively promote, educate and support

the business community, to maximize a healthy economy and provide community leadership.

As I write this, I started to think about the Chamber and its role in the business promotion, tourism and the social involvement that makes Sequim such a wonderful place to call home.

Chamber staff and members are highly active in the Sequim Merchant Group and they arrange many creative events throughout the year to encourage retail activity. For non-retail businesses, opportunities abound for making contacts at the networking breakfasts or lunches, of which one or the other is held nearly every week of the year. In addition, lunch sponsorship and after hours and open houses allow every business in the community an opportunity to highlight themselves to fellow business owners and managers. This is topped each fall with the hugely successful Business Showcase, a fun evening where businesses can have booths and an opportunity to show the community what they have to offer.

Tourism is a huge industry in Clallam County and the Chamber manages and runs the Visitor Information Center. This wonderful resource includes 55 volunteers, who combined, volunteered for over 6,000 hours per year, not only greet visitors from around the world but also are very instrumental in mailing relocation packets of information for people considering moving here.

Other things that are under the umbrella of the Chamber include things like the Irrigation Festival, Shiso Sister City, the beautiful ower baskets from the high school that line the downtown streets each year and even the annual Citizen of the Year award.

Chamber members and staff as well as untold numbers of volunteers are hard at work behind the scenes to make sure that Sequim retains its hometown feel. Did you ever wonder how did all those lights get hung downtown or who organized Santa’s arrival to Sequim and the tree-lighting ceremony?

So in closing and as you read this, if you are a volunteer, many thanks for all your efforts. If you are a current Chamber member, many thanks for your continued membership and support. If you are neither, thank you for reading this article and if interested in learning more about volunteer opportunities in town, or even Chamber membership, please feel free to contact the Chamber at 683-6197.

Past President Phil Castell

PRESIDENT’S REPORT: the last year. This is an opportunity not only share what is going on with your business but learn more about other businesses in our community. I’ve also learned tax and Excel tips from some experts we have right here in our business community.

I’d also like to take a moment and thank the staff and volunteers at the Chamber and Visitor Information Center. They are the heart and soul of the Chamber and are dedicated to promoting not only Chamber members but the Sequim community as a whole. If you haven’t been in in a while, I would encourage you to stop in sometime not only to see what goes on there, but to thank the staff and volunteers for all they do.

Lastly I just want to remind everyone that, just like any other organization, the more active you are in the Chamber, the more you get in return. Being involved with the Chamber over the last few years has been both professionally and personally rewarding. I’ve made some great business contacts, but more importantly I’ve gained some wonderful friends. So I hope to see all of you at some point in the year. Come out, attend an event, introduce yourself and let’s make 2016 a great year for the Sequim community!

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 20154

The Sequim Chamber just closed the books yet again on another very successful and eventful year. It goes without saying that

serving as Executive Director of the Sequim- D u n g e n e s s Va l l e y Chamber is a very robust role; however, a rewarding position to ful ll in our community!

I t is with much appreciation I thank the Chamber board,

our awesome members, devoted staff and big-hearted volunteers for their dedication of time and energy and support to the Chamber in 2015. As we enter the new year, we welcome two new board members: Shenna Younger, First Federal, and Jeff Anderson, of Olympic Medical Center. The membership also re-elected Brandino Gibson of WorkSource Clallam County, and Debra Pitts of Ballymore Consulting for another 3-year term. We also say goodbye to board members Vickie Oen of Purple Haze Lavender and Linda Barnfather, who both completed two terms on the board in 2015. We are fortunate to live in a community

with endearing, devoted and compassionate members. Thank you; the Chamber and Visitor Information Center couldn’t exist without such devoted individuals.

It is this Chamber’s mission to advance and promote business by providing a forum to address issues and to unite and support our membership and community through programs, events and services. This year we’ve done just that by working together, cultivating a very cohesive and strong bond through our committees and projects. In addition, we added 59 new Chamber members to the roster.

The Sequim Merchants Group banded together and worked hard to beautify our downtown for the holidays, once again creating a tree-lighting ceremony and events related to Santa’s arrival, as well as supporting our retail sector in a “Shop Local” focus! The 9th annual Business Showcase Expo with the theme: “It’s a Jungle Out There” was a resounding achievement thanks to the support of our event sponsors, vendors, attendees and the Chamber board, volunteers and staff who worked tirelessly on this event. This expo provides a unique

forum for Chamber members to showcase their products and services to the community and to network with valuable local resources.

The Shiso City Sister city visit in 2015 proved to be a wonderful experience for the host families and students. In September, 10 students traveled to Sequim from Shiso, Japan, staying with host families and attending classes at Sequim High School while their three chaperones were escorted to the Friendship Garden at Carrie Blake Park and provided tours of Sequim schools. They also toured the Olympic Game Farm and the Dungeness River Audubon Center. In October, 10 Sequim students embarked on a nine-day tour of Japan culminating in a visit to Shiso where they were guests of the very students they had hosted in Sequim. Student recruitment already is underway to recruit ninth-graders for 2016’s exchange program.

And to round out the year, the Sequim Community Chorus blessed the community again with its 31st annual performance during the Christmas holidays.

The Chamber continued its marketing efforts through social media, providing one-stop information on the Chamber website and Facebook pages. The Chamber website with an updated event calendar has proved to be an excellent tool in providing faster search abilities, adding a new mobile site last year and the ability to offer online payments via

our website as well. The Chamber continues to provide both a monthly paper newsletter, provided to everyone who subscribes to the Sequim Gazette, as well as several communications every month, to its members via our electronic newsletter, all in an effort to showcase and support its members.

I also would like to extend thanks and appreciation to the 120th Sequim Irrigation Festival Royalty Court: Queen Megan O’Mera, Princess Morgan King, Princess Emily Larson and Princess Amanda Sanders, for their dedication and service to the festival, the Chamber and the entire community through the year.

This court served with poise and professionalism as wonderful ambassadors for Sequim while attending parades and events throughout Western Washington

In addition to expanding the successful activities and events of 2015, the Chamber committees have some exciting new ideas and opportunities to launch. Please remember, anyone is welcome to partake in one of our committees, please see page 9 for a list of opportunities in which you can get involved! Again, working together makes a huge difference and creates community of which everyone bene ts.

Shelli Robb-Kohler, Executive Director

A look back and a look forward to 2016

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! To all businesses, organizations and individuals who sponsored a Sequim flower basket! Each year, Chamber board member Emily Westcott works in collaboration with the Sequim School District agriculture class and the City of Sequim to create more than 100 ower baskets to decorate downtown Sequim.

The agriculture class selects the ower theme, buys the seeds and starter plants, and prepares the baskets. The city crews install the baskets and then water and fertilize the baskets until nature dictates their removal. From May through September, visitors from around the world and local residents enjoy these proli c blooming baskets. The program has been under way for more than 20 years and is a shining example of teamwork!

The proceeds from the sponsors also fund the annual holiday lights that magically appear each year at the Bank of America Park and Centennial Place at the corner of Sequim Avenue and Washington Street. This magical corner plays host to Santa, Mrs. Claus and the Irrigation Festival Royalty elves each year along with the musical talent of the Sequim City Band and a host of other entertainment.

In addition to the baskets and holiday lights, sponsorship of the baskets contributes to a variety of events designed to encourage visitors to shop in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area. The Chamber extends its sincere appreciation to all ower basket sponsors and their support for the program which signi cantly contributes to maintaining the hometown atmosphere we enjoy!

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 20156

The Sequim area is blessed with an abundance of events and festivals throughout the year. Each event contributes its own unique value to our community as a great place to live. These events and festivals not only bring in visitors to support our local economy, they also provide our residents with enjoyable activities and entertainment, enriching our lives as we take the opportunity to meet our neighbors and make new friends.

May 2015 hosted the 120th Annual Irrigation Festival to Sequim – “120 Fun a Plenty.” As the longest continuous festival in Washington, the Irrigation Festival honors both our pioneers who had the foresight to call Sequim home but also the initiative to bring irrigation to the land to support our growing community.

May 2016 will host the 121st Irrigation Festival with the theme of “Looking to the Future Through The Past.” As a Chamber-sponsored community event, everyone is encouraged to participate and enjoy the festivities!

Lavender Weekend, produced by the many wonderful lavender farms located in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, continues to be the largest tourist-destination festival in the

Community Events & Festivals

Sequim area and has earned Sequim the of cial designation as The Lavender Capital of North America™.

Each and every July, more than 20,000 people visit the lavender farms on tour as well as participate in the multitude of events that take place during the third weekend of July. From street fairs to car, driftwood and quilt shows; art tours and musical entertainment, there are festival activities for every member of the family to enjoy. Nowhere else in this part of the world offers these events and rural attractions during July.

Several Chamber members participate in the farm tours and activities and the Visitor Information Center is especially busy during July. The Chamber staff and volunteers contribute substantial time and energy to assisting visitors, answering questions, giving directions and doing their best to make each and every visitor feel very welcomed in our unique community. Many volunteers assist on the lavender farms as well.

The Sequim Community Choir celebrated its 31st anniversary in December 2015 and performed its annual Christmas concerts to full houses of local residents and community visitors.

POSTING OF 2016 COMMUNITY EVENTS: Contact the Chamber to find out how events for

your local clubs and organizations may be added to the Calendar of Events on the Chamber’s website and posted at the Visitor Information Center! For up to the minute information on community events and festivals, be sure to visit sequimchamber.com for more information.

ANNUAL CHAMBER OF COMMERCE REPORT FOR 2015 7

The Irrigation Festival started as a celebration of the irrigation ditches that brought water from the Dungeness River to the valley. It was as much a commemoration of the ditches as it was of the community that made it happen. Ever since that rst picnic in 1896, the Sequim Irrigation Festival has been a celebration of, for and about this wonderful community in which we live. The Sequim Irrigation Festival, the longest continuously running festival in Washington, spans two weekends in early May and most of the events are free to the community and our visitors. The festival continues to grow and evolve over the years and it is all due to the generosity of the businesses and individuals of the Sequim/Port Angeles area. While the Irrigation Festival is a community festival that is overseen by the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce, it receives no funding from the Chamber. The festival is fully self-supporting and relies on sponsorships, donations (both monetary and in-kind), fundraising and the many volunteers who help the festival to make it successful.

The 2015 Sequim Irrigation Festival theme was “120 Fun a Plenty.” The 2015 logo was created by logo design contest winner Laura Friedkin. Madelyn Pickens Miranda, a fth-grader in Nathalie Maynock’s class at Greywolf Elementary School, created the winning festival button design during a contest open to all elementary students.

Our Royal Court: Queen Megan O’Mera and Princesses Morgan King, Amanda Sanders and Emily Larson represented the Irrigation Festival and the City of Sequim in parades, civic events and festivals throughout the year with professionalism, dedication and high spirits. They made appearances around town to represent the Irrigation Festival, traveled with the oat around Western Washington to other community parades and also performed community service in the area.

Preparations are now being made for the 121st Sequim Irrigation Festival. The theme “Looking To The Future Through The Past” will be used throughout the festival.

Sequim Irrigation FestivalThe 2016 logo again was created by logo designer, Laura Friedkin. This year’s festival button contest is open to the

elementary school students and the winner will be announced in early 2016. The festival buttons will then be sold by the fth-graders from the Sequim School District in late March.

Jim Stoffer has been selected as the Grand Marshal for the 121st Irrigation Festival and the Sequim Pioneer Association has selected the following pioneers to represent the festival: Honorary Pioneers Jo Robb and Milton Lynch, and Grand Pioneers William Blank and Mayme Faulk.

Planning and building for the 2016 Irrigation Festival already has started. The building of the new

oat to represent the theme began after the last parade in October and will be ready for the rst parade in mid-April. Additionally, the search for the 2016 royal court began in November and culminates on Feb. 13 with the Royalty Pageant. This scholarship event selects the high school students that will represent Sequim around Western Washington at the parades they attend. At the end of March, the Kick Off Dinner and Auction will be held as a fundraiser for the festival, where donated items and the festival pins are auctioned.

The 121st Sequim Irrigation Festival will take place during May 6-14, with many events, most which are free.

• MERCHANT’S GROUP:  Chair: Vickie Oen and Kay-lene Byrne

The Sequim Merchants Group meets the third Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m., locations alternate each month between different host merchants. The Merchants Group once again has continued to grow in attendance. Chamber membership is not required, and if your business is interested in becoming involved, call the Chamber to be added the e-mail list. Among the many successful projects the group accomplished is the following:

The mystery game called “Whodunnit”? — patterned after the game Clue took place for the third year in a row during January’s First Friday Art Walk. The game helped to create a fun night of late shopping which encouraged shoppers to visit a variety of stores. The theme this year was “The Curious Case of the Kidnapped Cat” and took place in the year 1936. The prize included a two-night stay at John Wayne’s Rustic Waterfront Resort (generously donated by the resort), a $50 gift certi cate to the Dockside Grill on Sequim Bay and a $15 gift certi cate to Adagio Bean & Leaf. It proved once again to be very successful and planning already is underway for 2016.

In March, Theresa Rubens from Solar City helped facilitate the donation of gift bags lled with items from local merchants that were presented to the Irrigation Festival Royalty at their annual Kick-Off dinner. This has now become a yearly tradition as a way of thanking the Royalty who so beautifully represent us all over our state!

In April, the merchants put on a scavenger hunt called “Birdfest Birdquest” which was designed to encourage shoppers to once again visit a variety of stores. There also was “Birdquest Birdfest Junior” version as well designed for children ages 0-12. In partnership with the Audubon Society and the art class at Sequim High School, 11 stores hosted a “bird sculpture” created by the students. There was a game card that required participants to match the bird with the correct store. This was a very successful event and great exposure for the art students as well. Prizes included a “birds-eye” view ight with Emily Westcott, tickets to the Olympic Game Farm, a family tour at the Northwest Raptor Center and summer camp at the Audubon Center. The Merchants Group looks forward to continuation of this as an annual event.

May brought the Irrigation Festival in which the merchants displayed student art entries for the festival’s button contest. Many families visited downtown stores in order to see their child’s artwork on display. Merchants and families once again truly enjoyed having the The Family Fun Day and Kiddies Parade back on Washington Street.

In July, during Sequim Lavender Weekend, the merchants decorated the bus stops in downtown Sequim and spruced up the down town with the addition of 150 lavender ags. The weather was amazing and we received many positive comments on how festive and welcoming the downtown looked!

In October, the merchants opened their doors to over 1,000 wonderful trick o’ treaters and gave away bucketfuls of goodies!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving the merchants welcomed

Santa and Mrs. Claus to town at Centennial Place, complete with a great tractor and sleigh. With the help of the City of Sequim (and a lot of help from Emily Westcott and her elves) a large tree was beautifully decorated with hundreds of lights. There was music, face-painting, yummy food and a tree lighting ceremony and light-counting contest complete with gift certi cates from many of the stores. New this year was a tractor parade which was loved by all! On that same Saturday, many of the merchants hosted open houses complete with holiday refreshments and special prizes or sales. This same weekend was also the kick off of the “Elk on a Shelf” scavenger hunt for children ages 0-12 with prizes generously donated by The Dungeness Kids Company and The BrokersGroup and printing services by The UPS Store. The game was well received and with 20 merchants participating it once again was deemed a great success!

Interested Chamber members or individuals are welcome to join the committee and help us plan for 2016 and beyond.

MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE: Chair: 2015 Heather Wells, 2016 Debra Pitts

Members: EB Van Otterloo, Theresa Rubens, Carol Pope and Chamber staff

The Membership Committee meets the fourth Monday of every month at 5:30 p.m.

It was a busy year in the membership committee! The committee worked on getting to know our current members a little better this year. A survey was sent out to our members to determine if expectations of being a member are being met, what we can do to improve the bene ts of being a Chamber member, what challenges our members have in operating their business and what topics our members are interested in learning more about at Chamber events. The survey gave the committee fresh, new ideas and suggestions from our members to make their membership even more bene cial to them. Stay tuned!

Lions, Tigers & Lemurs in Sequim?! “It’s a Jungle Out There” was the theme for this year’s 9th Annual Business Showcase. The event was a roaring success with a packed house full of amazing vendors and attendees. The Chamber is fortunate to have an active and supportive team of board members along with the staff, who know the importance of the Chamber of Commerce’s Vision and Mission Statement — which is to actively promote, educate and support the business community. The Chamber’s hope is to see the membership continue to grow in the community.

TOURISM COMMITTEECommittee Members: Linda Barnfather, Shelli Robb-

Kahler and Barbara Hanna (City of Sequim). With the wonderful weather of springtime and the

comfortable temperatures of summer, Sequim’s weather and location continues to be the envy of the nation. As a result, we experienced yet another signi cant increase in LTAC revenue and had an outstanding tourism season all the way into the typical “shoulder” season of October. Our Tourism Committee is hard at work making sure we can hit these numbers again next year.

We always are vigilant about identifying the best opportunities for tourism and travel to Sequim. We have been the subject of great press in many national publications around the topic, of course, of lavender. Also, our Olympic Discovery Trail has really caught on with bicyclists from all over the country. Plus, interest in our varied outdoor opportunities

continues to be popular. We’re anticipating another surge in visitors with a very localized advertising campaign and promotion being crafted by our partners with the Olympic Peninsula Tourism Commission.  The featured ads are to “come and relax on the Peninsula” — something we all know about and gives cause to the reason why we live here.  This advertising campaign is being featured on key buses in the very congested traf c areas of the 1-5 Corridor and downtown Seattle. So, next time you are in Seattle, look for our Olympic Mountains traveling down a street and know you have a bit of home with you.

We always are welcoming new committee members and new ideas. We’re looking forward to another record season in our Sunny Sequim and will continue to make our community shine.

FINANCE AND FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE: Chair: Jim Weatherly in 2015, Heather Wells in 2016The Finance Committee is responsible for the budget for

the Chamber and Visitor Information Center. Each year the Executive Committee completes a review of the revenues and expenditures, including a determination of cost allocation for those expenses incurred as part of the operation of the VIC.

The Fundraising Committee develops new events and programs to bene t the Chamber and provides support for its ongoing operations, including raf es and events. Interested Chamber members or individuals are welcome to join the committee and help us plan for 2016 and beyond.

IRRIGATION FESTIVAL COMMITTEE: Chair and Appointee to Chamber Board: Deon

meeting (location varies)The committee organized and executed yet another very

successful festival — their 120th! Please see page 7 for a complete Irrigation Festival report!

SHISO SISTER CITY COMMITTEE: Chair: Pete TjemslandAppointee to Chamber Board: 2015 Genaveve Starr,

2016 Gloria DahlquistMeetings: Second Thursday at 1:30 p.m. — Sequim Civic

CenterThe Sequim-Shiso Sister City Association fosters a

friendship and cultural/educational exchange relationship with the city of Shiso, Japan. The Friendship Garden at Carrie Blake Park, which is maintained by sister city association members, recently was improved when the pavilion was refurbished, benches were replaced, the bridge repaired, the stream cleared and the “island” cleaned — with assistance from local citizens and the Rotary Club.

Satoshi Sera and Yoshimi Nishijima attended the Sequim Civic Center Dedication Ceremony as representatives of Shiso Mayor Fukomoto Shouzou on June 13. SSSCA participated in Lavender Weekend by having a booth at Purple Haze Lavender Farm. Sequim received 10 students from Shiso in September and in October 10 student ambassadors went to Shiso, each group accompanied by three chaperones. Consulate-General of Japan Masahiro Omura hosted a reception for Washington/Japanese sister-city organizations at the Ambassador’s Of cial Residence in September. Reader’s Theatre Plus donated the proceeds from their performances in October to SSSCA, which is a big help with transportation expenses for student exchanges.

His main responsibilities are connecting businesses with employees and working with the college to assist with Career Pathways for graduating students. He works extensively with many local businesses assisting with employee needs and other business-related issues.

Prior to moving to Sequim in 2010, Brandino was director of Lake College in Yuba City Calif., responsible for the day to day operation of an accredited vocational school. Working for a business that was community connected, he found it imperative to be part of the Yuba Sutter Chamber of Commerce. Brandino joined the Chamber as an Ambassador in October 1997 and continued as an Ambassador until moving to Sequim in 2010. During his tenure as an Ambassador he served as both President and Vice President for two terms each.

Community involvement always has been very important to Brandino. In April 2013 he was an integral part of starting Sequim FC Adult Soccer League in Sequim which has grown to over 200 participants, providing a healthy activity while building strong community connections. He also is very active with local school activities.

As a board member, Brandino brings years of prior and current Chamber of Commerce experience, an extensive leadership background and a strong commitment to community.

PHIL CASTELL, PAST PRESIDENTCastell Insurance

In the mid-1990s while living in the Seattle area, Phil began a search for a place less crowded where he could continue to grow his business in an enjoyable environment with friendly people. Needless to say Sequim won the search hands down. He found the only thing more amazing than the people he met was the wonderful effect of the rain shadow. Driving home from Sequim in brilliant sunshine to the typical Seattle weather was the clinching factor. Phil attributes the friendliness of the

people to the fact that the vast majority of people in Sequim were newcomers themselves at some point and they go out of their way to make new residents feel welcome. Phil said that every member of the community is a voice for the Chamber of Commerce in extolling the virtues of the area and doing business here. He feels privileged to serve as a board member.

HEATHER WELLS, FINANCE/FUNDRAISINGSound Community Bank

Heather Wells was born and raised in Sequim. She currently is a senior residential loan of cer for Sound Community Bank in Sequim. She has been in the banking for over 17 years. Over the years she has earned numerous awards for high loan production and excellent customer service.  Heather previously served on the Membership Committee for the Sequim Chamber before becoming a Chamber board member.   continued next page

TYLER SWEET, SECRETARY/TREASURERSunland Golf and Country Club

Tyler Sweet grew up in Langley, British Columbia, where he studied business marketing at Douglas College. While attending Douglas, Tyler met his wife, Stephanie, a Sequim native. They decided that Sequim was the perfect place to raise a family and moved to the area in 2004. Tyler was hired at Sunland Golf and Country Club as the assistant golf professional, but it didn’t take long to work his way up the ladder to his current position as general manager.

Tyler enjoys volunteering for his local Professional Golfers of America (PGA) chapter and serves on the Marketing and Education Committees. He was past chairman for the WWCPGA Patriot Golf Day supporting Folds of Honor. He also serves on the board for the Country Club Managers Association of America as team captain of the International Matches and member of the Tournament Committee. CAROLINE STUCKEYOlympic Mailing Services

After moving to Sequim in 1994, Caroline Stuckey recognized the need for a local mailing service. In 1997, after furthering her education in accounting, managerial nance and business management, she started Olympic Mailing Services in her home. The rst order of business was to join the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce. Creating a home-based business allowed her to be home while raising her daughter, Erin. When Erin graduated high school and left home for college in

2001, Caroline relocated her business to downtown Sequim. Over the past 18 years, she has cultivated her business by forming strong bonds and friendships with her clients. Caroline brings an expertise to this board that she has acquired over the years from serving on various boards throughout the community: Sequim Chamber, Sequim Irrigation Festival, the New Dungeness Light Station Association, Jazz in the Olympics Society, Sequim Elks, the Museum & Arts Center, International Footprint Association (a nonpro t supporting all local law enforcement and protective services that also raises scholarship funds for youths entering those professions), SHS Band Boosters — further, forming this organization in 1999

and obtaining its 501(c)3 status, and the Washington State Geocaching Association. She is the creative brains and active hands behind the wildly successful Sequim Centennial Geocaching event. This event showcased the history and culture of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, which is near and dear to her heart. Caroline serves on this board because of her knowledge of the area, her relationships and liaisons among the many sectors of this community and her desire to see Sequim thrive. When she is not spending her time serving her community, she can be found hiking, searching for geocaches, attending monthly book club meetings or enjoying quiet evenings at home.

VANESSA FULLER Dungeness River Audubon Center

Vanessa was born and raised in Port Angeles. She graduated from Bellingham Technical College in the Travel and Tourism Program in 2001 and worked in the tourism industry on the Olympic Peninsula since. She works at the Dungeness River Audubon Center but over the years she has gained experience working at the following businesses: Olympic National Park & Forest, Red Lion Hotel Port Angeles, North Olympic Peninsula Visitor and Convention Bureau

and the Port Angeles Regional Chamber of Commerce. Vanessa has been involved with the planning of the following events: Dungeness River Festival, BirdFest, The Big Hurt, Dungeness Crab and Seafood Festival, Sequim Lavender Festival, Jazz in the Olympics, Port Angeles 4th of July Celebration, Olympic Peninsula Senior Games, A Taste of the Peninsula, Olympic Cycling Classic, Strait Thunder Hydro Races, Concerts on the Pier and Chamber activities. If she was not working for an event in Port Angeles, she probably was volunteering for it! Knowing the important role the Chamber plays in the community, she would like to serve as a board member to become more involved in Sequim.

NELL CLAUSEN Realtor/RE/MAX Fifth Avenue

Nell and her husband Scott made the decision to move to Sequim in 2003. They feel so very fortunate to live in this community and continue to enjoy all that it has to offer. Her community service includes being a Rotarian since 2003, working with Welfare for Animals Guild (WAG) and volunteering at the annual Lavender Weekend. Nell

has worked with the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce since moving here in 2003 as a representative of various sales and marketing positions with different companies. Nell understands the value and the commitment the Chamber has to represent the area for both the local businesses and for tourists who visit Sequim.

KAYLENE BYRNEBrokersGroup

Kaylene Byrne moved to Sequim as a teenager where she met and married her high school sweetheart Jubal. After years of working in retail and customer service, Kaylene earned her Real Estate Broker license in 2005. In 2007, she joined with Deborah Norman and Hazel Ault to open BrokersGroup Real Estate Professionals. her community and its future generations. She believes in BrokersGroup’s motto of “Making It Better for Someone Everyday.” She has been involved in various local children’s groups including the Sequim Children’s Hospital Guild, the Sequim/Port Angeles MOPS (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) group as well as currently serving as Olympic Peninsula Academy’s PTO treasurer. Kaylene and Jubal have a passion for supporting local industry and small businesses. DEON KAPETAN, IRRIGATION FESTIVAL APPOINTEE TO THE BOARD Cherry Creek Mortgage

Deon Kapetan has been involved in the planning of the Irrigation Festival since 2000, but began participating in the festival long before that by performing in skits at Crazy Daze. She has demonstrated her organizational skills and spirit by co-chairing and then chairing the Crazy Daze Breakfast from 2000-2006. In 2007, she became the chair of the Float Display committee, which manages the parades that the

royalty and oat travel to around Western Washington. Deon and her husband, Kevin, moved to Sequim in 1990 and have been very active in

the community and with the festival. Their two children have been involved in the festival from an early age as well. Deon is the sales manager at Cherry Creek Mortgage in Sequim.

Being a volunteer with the festival is “very rewarding and fun experience,” she said. She is excited about her sixth year as Festival Director and sees lots of new ideas, committee members and opportunities happening over the course of the next year. “We are always adapting to the needs of a growing festival by developing teams to better facilitate the festival.”

The festival is all about the volunteers and the community. There are 22 committee directors and lots of volunteers who help with each of these festival committees. Some of the newly formed teams within the festival committee have been vital to the success of the festival. This includes some changes to this year’s festival with the development of the “Innovation Arts and Craft Fair,” a revitalization of the former Street Fair, which takes place during the “Crazy Callen Weekend.” With a focus on recycle, repurpose and reuse, we’re excited about this completely revamped event. It is because of the countless volunteers and the nancial support of the many local businesses and individuals that we are able to pull off such an enormous festival. The Sequim Irrigation Festival is truly a community event and the festival gives back to the community in many ways. The Royalty often led the charge for community involvement. They and the Festival Committee have participated in the Relay for Life, collections for the food bank and Toys for Tots, and sending care packages to the troops. Deon invites anyone who enjoys the festival events, likes working with a close-knit team and doing something good for the community to consider joining the Irrigation Festival Committee. Don’t forget to check us out at www.irrigationfestival.com and like us on Facebook.

GLORIA DAHLQUISTSHISO-SEQUIM SISTER CITY APPOINTEE TO THE BOARD

Prior to my recent retirement, for the past thirteen years I had the privilege of serving the children of U.S. military personnel who live overseas, on U.S. Naval and Air Force Bases. During this time I served as a school guidance counselor in the educational activities of the U.S. Defense Department. In this capacity I spent eleven years in Japan. First, I lived and worked at Atsugi Naval Air Station, located

just outside of Tokyo, and lived in a very traditional Japanese house. Later, I transferred to Sasebo Naval Base, on the southern-most home island, called Kyushu. These employment postings allowed me to travel extensively, not only through the four Japanese home islands, but also through much of Asia. My adventures in the Greater Tokyo area were especially enjoyable, but after I grew weary of living in an urban area with 35 million people hustling about, I transferred to Sasebo Naval Base, and thoroughly relished the quieter Japanese lifestyle on the southern-most home island of Kyushu.

While living in Japan, I became fascinated with the Japanese history, traditions and culture. For these reasons I am delighted to have an opportunity to serve as the liaison for the Sequim-Shiso Sister City Association, and the Sequim Chamber of Commerce. In this capacity I look forward to sharing my knowledge and personal experiences with the children and citizens of Sequim, with anticipation in bringing an increased awareness regarding the beauty, simplicity, and peacefulness of the Japanese society and culture. I also hope to highlight the vital role our ally, Japan, which is the third wealthiest nation of earth, plays in maintaining world peace.

“Congratulations to the newly appointed

Mayor of Sequim, Dennis Smith,

and Clallam County Commissioner, Mark Ozias”

The Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce was very pleased to announce Cliff Vining, a 30-year dedicated volunteer at the Sequim Food Bank, as the 2014 Citizen of the Year. Vining was nominated by Mark Ozias.

“Cliff Vining has been a volunteer at the Sequim Food Bank since the 1980s. He has performed many roles over the years, but the one constant has been his loving dedication to Sequim’s hungry. As he has done for 30 years, Cliff still arrives at the food bank nearly every day to sort food and stock shelves. Up until 2014, Cliff hand-built every single Family Holiday Meal box himself! Cliff has volunteered an estimated 20,000 volunteer hours to the food bank. Cliff is one of Sequim’s “silent heroes.” Those who aren’t familiar with the food bank or his work there might never know of the service he has provided for so many in our community, for such a very long time. Cliff does not volunteer for appearances. He is not looking for notoriety. Cliff gives generously of his time, talent and resources. Cliff Vining deserves to be recognized as Citizen of the Year because there could be no more tting way to recognize his decades of steady service. Thank you, Cliff, for helping to ensure that “no one goes hungry in Sequim.”

Vining died at age 93, just days prior to the luncheon, and was awarded posthumously along with four other

finalists, David Blakeslee, Melissa Murray and Judy Reandeau Stipe — all nominated for their contributions toward the betterment of the community.

A committee of previous recipients selected nalists from a pool of Sequim citizens nominated by members of the community. Finalists are chosen based on their history of outstanding volunteer service to the Sequim community. Annually, the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce seeks nominations for and determines the Citizen of the Year under the following criteria:

• Nominees shall be residents of Eastern Clallam County (primarily Sequim School District area.)

• Nominees shall be persons who have performed outstanding service to the community.

• Service rendered by nominees shall be above, beyond and generally outside the regular occupation of the nominee.

• Two persons working jointly in a community project or projects may be nominated to receive a joint award. Groups of more than two will not be considered.

Persons making nominations should bear in mind the foregoing guidelines, while fully understanding that the selection tribunal must, of necessity be the nal authority.

The Sequim Citizen of the Year 2015 will be announced on Feb. 23 at the Chamber’s luncheon to be held at Sunland.
